Malcolm Forbes said “Education's purpose is to replace an empty mind with an open one”

and this is something which is always followed by Government of Kerala, Department of Education,

whether through their education system framework or recent enhancement in their curriculum. The

aim of their Curriculum is not just to let learners obtain basic knowledge but to make them life-

long learners.

The purpose of this book is to nurture individuality and thus enhance one's innate potentials

which help in increasing the self-study mode for students. This book strengthens knowledge and

attitude related to subject. This book is designed in such a way that students can set their own goals

and can improve their problem solving and thinking skills.

This book is strictly as per the latest SCERT Kerala Textbook, introduced by SSLC Board in

2016. It follows the latest syllabus prescribed by the board. It contains all types of questions like

Textbook Questions, VSA Questions (Very Short Answer), SA Questions (Short Answer), MCQs

(Multiple Choice Questions) and LA Questions (Long Answer). A synopsis is given for every chapter

which contains important points from that chapter. Each chapter has high quality figures wherever

required for better, fast and clear understanding.

OSWAAL SSLC Question Bank is different and better in terms of High Quality Questions

which are developed by 'OSWAAL Expert Panel' which ensures success in examination. The Question

Bank is arranged ‘Topic-Wise’ where each topic from every chapter is explained in detail. High quality

figures and Flow charts are given to improve retention of concepts.

Through OSWAAL Books students are taught how to think, not what to think. We at

OSWAAL Books try to use quality content, standard language, creativity and high quality figures,

which makes readers to enjoy it because we believe if our readers don't enjoy reading our book then

there is no use in reading it at all. This is one of the reasons that the scope of this book extends from

students to teachers. Teachers can use this book as a perfect teaching guide and students can use

this book for good learning and practice.

At last we would like to thank our authors, editors, reviewers and specially students whom

we request to send suggestions regularly which will help in continuous improvement of this book

and will make this book “One of the Best”. Wish you all Happy Learning.

Why Topic Wise Question Banks Are A Better Choice than Previous Year’s Papers ?

Question Banks Previous Years’ Papers

1. Chapter-wise and Topic –wise presentation

in Question Banks facilitates systematic

study.

2. Question Banks can be referred to by the

students throughout the year as well as at

the completion of each chapter in school.

3. Question Banks, take into account any

changes in syllabus or layout and hence are

fully updated and aligned as per the latest

specifications by the Board.

1. Year Wise presenta t ion res t r i c t s

methodical flow of learning.

2. These can be referred to only after the

completion of the full syllabus in school.

3. Previous Years' questions cannot be

changed and hence fail to be adept with

the latest Board specifications

18. When pressure increases, the gas molecules come closer. Since they are continuously travelling in

all directions, the number of collisions increases. According to collision theory, the rate of a chemical reaction increases with the increase in the number of effective collisions between the molecules of the reactants.

9. (A) 100 g of NaOH

Number of moles = Mass in grams/Gram molecular mass

= 100 g/40 g

Number of molecules = number of moles × 6.022 × 1023

= (100/40) × 6.022 × 1023

Number of atoms = 3 × (100/40) × 6.022 × 1023

(B) 100 g of SO2

Number of moles = Mass in grams/Gram molecular mass

= 100 g/64 g

Number of molecules = number of moles × 6.022 × 1023

= (100/64) × 6.022 × 1023

Number of atoms = 3 × (100/64) × 6.022 × 1023

Hence 100 grams of NaOH contains greater number of atoms (lesser number of moles) 4

QUICK REVIEW ¾ Physical properties of metals are malleability, ductility, thermal and

electrical conductivity. ¾ A naturally occurring compound in which the metal exists either in

native state or combined state is called mineral. ¾ Characteristics of minerals, which are used for extraction of metals,

are : Abundance, Easily separable, high metal quantity. ¾ Ores are the mineral from which a metal is economically, easily and

quickly extracted. For example, Haematite is an ore of iron; Bauxite is an ore of Aluminium.

¾ Metallurgy involves all the processes leading to the separation of a pure metal from its ore.

¾ Important stages of metallurgy are : Concentration of ores, Extraction of metal from concentrated ore, and Refining of metals.

¾ Concentration of ore is the process of removing impurities (gangue) from the ore obtained from the earth’s crust. ¾ There are different methods to concentrate the powdered ore, like Hydraulic washing, Froth floatation, Magnetic

separation and Leaching. ¾ Levigation or Hydraulic Washing : Impurities lighter than ore particles are removed by washing in a current of

water. eg., concentration of oxide ores. ¾ Forth Floatation : Mixture of the powdered ore, water and pine oil is strongly agitated by compressed air, heavier

impurities sink to bottom. While the ore is separated from bottom. e.g. concentration of copper pyrites. ¾ Magnetic separation : Powdered ore is fed to the conveyer belt moving over a magnetic wheel to separate

magnetic substance. ¾ There are two stages for extraction of metals from concentrated ore : l Conversion of concentrated ore into its oxide : It involves Calcination and Roasting process. l Reduction of the oxide : It is the process of extraction of metal from the oxide. Carbon monoxide and carbon

are two reducing agents. ¾ Electricity is used as reducing agent to extract highly reactive metals like sodium, potassium and calcium from

their ores. ¾ Refining of metals is the process of removal of impurities to get the pure metal. ¾ Methods of refining of metals are : Liquation, Distillation, and Electrolytic refining. ¾ Electrolytic refining is the process of refining a metal by the electrolysis of a solution of the salt of the metal using

a small pure metal as the negative electrode and impure metal as the positive electrode.
