Increasing electric reliability for Bakersfield and surrounding Kern County communities

Project Study Area

Building a new substation;

Converting about 16 miles of transmission line between the proposed new substation and PG&E’s existing Wheeler Ridge Substation from 115 kV to 230 kV;

Converting about 5 miles of transmission line between PG&E’s existing Stockdale Substation and the proposed new substation from 115 kV to 230 kV;

Rebuilding about 6 miles of idle 115 kV transmission line between PG&E’s existing Magunden Substation and the proposed new substation;

Reconductoring about 6 miles of 230 kV transmission line between PG&E’s existing Kern PP and Stockdale substations; and

Upgrading five existing PG&E substations:

• Kern PP, Stockdale and Lamont substations will be upgraded within their respective substation fences to maintain efficiency and safety and increase reliability.

• Wheeler Ridge Substation will be upgraded within its substation fence to increase reliability and flexibility, allowing lines to be isolated for repairs and outages.

• Magunden Substation will be upgraded within its substation fence, which will provide efficiency and reliability.

Bakersfield Power Connect will strengthen the grid and help PG&E continue to provide a highly reliable and stable electricity source for 100,000 customers in the area. The proposed project will include:

Substation OverviewMoving electricity safely across the grid

• A substation is a power station that switches, changes or regulates voltage in the electric system so that electricity can move safely and reliably across the power grid.

• Think of transmission lines as freeways and distribution lines as local streets. Substations serve as the on- and off-ramps between freeways and local streets.

• Once electricity is generated, transmission substations convert electricity to different voltages, so it can be efficiently carried throughout the system.

Approximately 12-15 acres in size

Located in southeastern Bakersfield near the intersection of three key transmission lines

Joined to the local electric grid through connections to three key transmission lines

Connected to four existing substations in the area

Siting Criteria

• We will work closely with the local community, government agencies and organizations to identify potential sites with the least overall impact.       

• Potential substation sites will be located on land relatively close to the intersection of the existing Lamont-Adobe Switching Station 115 kV, Kern-Tevis-Stockdale 115 kV and Kern-Tevis-Stockdale-Lamont 115 kV lines, as well as other existing power lines that intersect this area.
