PGDipEd (Music Education)The Postgraduate Diploma in Education with a specialisation
in Music Education is for graduates interested in all
aspects of music education. It is of particular interest
to graduates with an interest in approaches to music
education influenced by the theory and practice of Carl
Orff, Gunild Keetman and others and with ways in which
music integrates with other/or art-forms and other human
meaning-making resources. Since the 1960s, interest in the
relevance and application of the Orff Schulwerk principles
has spread throughout the world. Interest in Orff-Schulwerk
in New Zealand has burgeoned in the last ten years, and
there is now a national organisation of music educators
(ONZA) committed to supporting the development of this
approach within the New Zealand context.
The admission requirement for this programme is a
Bachelors degree in Education or a Bachelors degree and
teaching qualification.
WHY ORFF-SCHULWERK?Orff Schulwerk is an approach to music education, which
uses songs, movement, rhymes, clapping games, poetry and
stories drawn from the imaginative and cultural world of the
child. Children improvise, compose and invent their own
music using tuned and untuned percussion instruments.
Children also learn how to read and write music.
The Orff Music Education: Theory and Practice papers
provide an in-depth, experienced-based knowledge of both
the musical content and the pedagogical ideas embedded
within Orff Schulwerk. Students critically examine how
other pedagogically based approaches to music education,
historical perspectives, educational philosophy and learning
theory inform the ideas and practices of Orff Schulwerk.
These papers, while steeped in Orff and other theory related
to Music Education, are particularly targeted at music
practitioners.
PROGRAMME REQUIREMENTSPhilosophically and practically, we believe that it takes a year for
the learnings from a particular course to become embedded in
the practice of course participants. In most circumstances, this
qualification cannot be completed in less than two years.
Although ALED512 and ALED513 are compulsory for the
PGDipEd (Music Education), there is some flexibility. Prospective
students can discuss their options with the Department
Chairperson. Note only one of these papers is offered in any one
year. ALED512 is a prerequisite for ALED513 and both of these
are prerequisites for ALED514.
Other papers
There are other papers which can contribute to a PGDipEd (Music
Education). These include more general papers on aspects of the
Arts.
ALED510 Arts Education: Issues in Practice
ALED511 The Arts and the Integrated Curriculum
One paper can be also selected from a number of directed
studies in either dance, visual art, drama, or musical leadership/
conducting, all of which could lead to a thesis. There are also
cross-disciplinary papers such as:
HDCO524 Intelligence, Creativity and the Development of
Talent
PROF504 Educational Leadership and Community
Masters
While it is only possible to do a PGDipEd (Music Education)
with an Orff focus over two years part-time, it is possible to do
ALED514 (Orff Music Education: Theory and Practice 3) as a
complement to a three-paper thesis and to complete a Masters
full-time in one calendar year.
POSTGRADUATE PAPERSAll papers in Orff Music Education: Theory and Practice
require attendance at a six-day workshop. These workshops are
followed by a distance learning (online) component of 12 weeks
(delivered via the Moodle platform).
The six-day workshop may also be taken as a stand-alone,
practical course for those wishing to gain ONZA certification
in the respective level. Only students enrolled for postgraduate
study participate in the additional, follow-up, distance-learning
(online) component.
