Established in 1982 as an autonomous institution under the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Government of India, IIFM was conceptualized in response to the recommendations of the National Commission on Agriculture. The impetus generated by these recommendations culminated in an alliance with the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad through which the philosophy and raison d’erte of IIFM was evolved. The Swedish International Development Agency also contributed financially and technically in establishing the Institute. Since its inception, IIFM has been home to some of the most brilliant young minds who are constantly raising the bar of excellence in this dynamic field.

It screens movies and documentations on weekends, runs movie and documentary marathons, shows open theatre movies and organize quizzes. Apart from the members of the club, other students also have a say in screening of the movies of their choice.

Mess Committee

With active participation of the students, the mess committee takes care of the cuisine at IIFM. Every term new members replace the old members and get a chance to learn the intricacies involved in operating the mess. They are involved in activities such as deciding the menu, checking accounts and managing finances of the mess activities, doing market research to get an idea of the best available prices for food items and handling feasts on festive occasions.

Alumni Network Committee

To interact and remain connected with the managers that IIFM has created, the Alumni Affairs Committee makes all possible endeavors to gather and update information of its alumni while also facilitating the students to take advantage of this priceless asset by organizing talk series with them, getting connected with them through social media and the institute website, inviting them to the institute from time to time and conducting Chapter Meets at different locations across the country.

Adventure Club

Surviving in the wild, surmounting back breaking terrains, facing rigorous competition in various contests organized by the Adventure Club helps students develop discipline and team building skills. Taxing oneself at events like rappelling, trekking, monkey crawling among others helps one to evolve a suitable mental attitude to face critical situations in life. Students also get a chance to pragmatically understand the nuances in community development and ecotourism.

Dramatics Club

The Dramatics Club was started by the current batch of students in order to bring out acting skills of the students. Performing on stage enriches students with confidence and helps them to open up. The dramatics club exposes students and audience to literature of playwrights that form a treasure trove of our culture. Apart from that, organizing events helps the students to learn management skills. The club also provides students exposure at national level where they compete with other institutes.

Dramatics Club

The alumni affirm their links with the Institute through the IIFM Alumni Cell and the IIFM Alumni Association. The Alumni cell holds an annual Convention; Groups meet regularly in all major cities of the country. IIFM brings out a newsletter called Synergy at IIFM, which acts as a channel of communication between alumni and students. The alumni cell also runs an Internet list server which acts as a forum for frequent discussions on contemporary academic and professional issues.

ESProf. R. Srinivasan, (PFM 1993)Faculty, Corporate Strategy & Policy, Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore

“In management, the whole is significantly more than the parts. More so, in a sectoral program like forestry management, synthesis of various tools, techniques and concepts is imperative. All of the two years during the PFM program, a holistic perspective of the field of Resource Management, rather than bits and pieces of subject knowledge in Forestry, Society, and Management is emphasized. The program design with excessive exposure to the “real world” by way of the various field work and organizational training components, as no other program of its kind, makes it one of the top programs in Resource Management. The use of case methodology and the key emphasis on group work has built a strong foundation for my academic and industry experience.”

Vineet Rai, (PFM 1994)Chairman & Co-Founder, Intellecap

“My only management degree is from IIFM and hence where I stand today can be attributed to a large degree to IIFM. It is a place where you learn to discover yourself both as a professional and as a human being and is one of the few professional management institutes around the world that give you that liberty with a surrounding that is be3autiful and bountiful. IIFM was a life changing experience for me and I do believe it has the potential to bring about even more significant changes in our lives. “

Alark Saxena, (PFM 2003)Faculty, Yale University

“In an era of unprecedented Climate Change, where countries are facing serious environmental threats, and where the Noble Peace Prize goes to environmental scientists, I believe quality institutions like IIFM are uniquely positioned to play a key role in the future welfare of India and the world at large.”

Swapan Mehra, (PFM 2006)CEO, Iora Ecological Solutions

“IIFM gave me a systemic perspective on creating sustainability solutions across business, government and civil society sectors. IIFM’s pedagogy of balancing management training, grassroots experience with environmental stewardship prepares students for lifetime leadership in this niche area. It has always been my privilege to collaborate with IIFM Alumni and faculty and I am proud of my association to this veritable institution.”

S. Arun (PFM 2012)TERI

My work in TERI involves planning, implementation and assessment of projects on intermingling themes of human development and clean energy. Like most other IIFM graduates, I am required to play polychrome roles of project manager, extension worker, and researcher simultaneously. Ihave found that the eclectic academic courses I studied at IIFM and the assorted practical experience I gained at the institute have singularly contributed to both ideation and implementation of my work as a development researcher.
