Improving your language skillsThe University offers language courses and study facilitiesfor all students through The Language Centre, based onUniversity Park Campus.

We provide daytime language modules in 13 languages(three hours of contact time per week) from beginners

level to near-native speaker competence with varyingentry points depending on previous language-learningexperience. These modules are free if taken as part ofyour taught course credit allocation.

We offer a range of evening classes, including BritishSign Language, on a fee-paying basis (one two-hourclass per week).

Our Doctoral TrainingProgrammes

These programmes offer specialist opportunities for PhD

student training by delivering tailored high level research

and skills training for postgraduate students. They oftenoffer a placement. Each offering is unique, but all provide

cutting-edge doctoral study, combined with a supportiveand exciting working environment.

The University of Nottingham has attracted signicant

funding of 162m from research councils and industrypartners to develop programmes which aim to produce

the next generation of research leaders across a range

of disciplines, from the arts and humanities through toengineering and the sciences. Recent investments will

support 1,000 new PhD studentships through 21 Doctoral

Training Programmes across a range of disciplines. Around

45% will be based at The University of Nottingham, and therest with our wide range of partner universities.

The AHRC-funded Midlands3CitiesMidlands3Cities DTP supports the production ofworld-leading arts and humanities research throughengagement with the creative industries, third sectoremployers and the general public.

Biotechnology and Biological SciencesResearch Council Doctoral TrainingPartnershipThe BBSRC DTP delivers world-class doctoral researchtraining in global food security, bioenergy and industrialbiotechnology.

Biomedical Imaging**Jointly funded by EPSRC and MRC, the OxfordNottingham Biomedical Imaging (ONBI) CDT is a uniquelybroad four-year PhD programme providing exposure to allaspects of cellular and clinical biomedical imaging.

EPSRC Carbon Capture and Storage andCleaner Fossil Energy**This CDT will provide the highly trained personnelneeded to tackle the specic challenges in implementingtechnologies to reduce carbon dioxide emissions frompower generation and other industrial uses of fossil fuels.

Envision (NERC)Funded by the Natural Environment Research Council(NERC), this DTP brings together a powerful group of UKresearchers with 44 industry and NGO partners to provide

a new generation of environmental scientists with theskills, knowledge and experience they need to take on thechallenges of a changing world.

Economic and Social Research Council(ESRC) Doctoral Training CentreFunded by the the ESRC, this DTC offers an outstandingmultidisciplinary environment in which to support researchand help produce the next generation of world-classsocial scientists.

Fuel Cells and Their Fuels**

Providing in-depth training in hydrogen technologies, thisCDT will equip graduates to work within the energy sector.

Horizon My Life in Data**The Horizon CDT in My Life in Data focuses on training acommunity of researchers within the Digital Economy themewith an emphasis on digital identity and personal data.

Composites Manufacture**

This IDC will support 70 Engineering Doctorate (EngD)Research Engineers, who will undertake specialist trainingwhile completing an industrially focused research project inthe eld of manufacturing of composites structures.

IMPaCT - Innovative Metal Processing**IMPaCT was created to train future leaders who are ableto fully exploit innovative metal processing techniquesin industry. Themes include casting, welding, surfaceengineering, near-net shape forming, materials modellingand characterisation.

Manufacturing Technology EngD Centre**The Manufacturing Technology Engineering DoctoralCentre (MTEDC) is a partnership with industry to addresskey challenges in advanced manufacturing engineering andtransform the latest manufacturing research results intoindustrial technologies.

NERC Oil and GasThe research in this CDT is dedicated to training researchleaders for the oil and gas industry, creating newtechnologies for recovery and studying their impact.

Non-Destructive Evaluation**

This CDT gives graduates the experience to lead anddevelop non-destructive evaluation methods in diverseengineering industries.

Regenerative Medicine**Research in this CDT is focused on bringingtogether expertise to promote the UKs position inregenerative medicine.

Sustainable Chemistry**This CDT provides PhD training and world-class researchprojects aligned to impact upon the longer term sustainability

of chemistry and the chemical-based supply chain.

Overseas Doctoral Training ProgrammesInternational Doctoral InnovationCentre (IDIC)The IDIC is a major initiative comprising leading UK andChinese universities and industry to train future leadersin energy and digital technologies. The IDIC supportsPhD research, promotes international collaboration, andestablishes a platform for developing collaborative researchand knowledge transfer activities between the two nations.

Encouraging entrepreneursEntrepreneurial students are nurtured at Nottingham. TheHaydn Green Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship(HGI) offers support through its EnterpriseLab for studentswho want to explore and develop their business ideas.EnterpriseLab members gain access to business mentorsand free advice surgeries relating to nance, marketing,

sales, intellectual property and legal issues.

Examples of companies supported by the EnterpriseLabinclude Call for Participants and Sirosa. Call forParticipants took part in the Digital Economy YoungEntrepreneurs Scheme competition in 2012, developingtheir idea which provides researchers with access toparticipants for their studies. Course feesAll postgraduate students pay an annual fee which coversregistration, tuition, initial examination, graduation, accessto most of the Universitys library and IT services andmembership of the Students Union.

The fee you pay depends on the course you are onand whether you are classied as a home/EU orinternational student.

When you accept your offer of a place, you are alsoaccepting responsibility for the payment of your tuitionfees. Approximately three weeks after registering for yourprogramme, an invoice will be issued by the Tuition FeesOfce. Self-funded students are usually permitted to payin two instalments. Unfortunately, if you fail to pay the fees,you will not be permitted to continue with your course.

We offer a variety of research programmes, from mastersdegrees with a research element, such as the MRes orMA (by research), to doctoral work the most advancedform of postgraduate study. As a research student atNottingham, you will have close contact with academicstaff and receive personal research supervision. Researchtraining is provided to support your work and to help yougain skills in research methodology, skills specic to yourresearch area and a greater understanding of your subjectas a whole.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)Duration: three years full-time (guide only)

A PhD is awarded on the successful completion of aprogramme of supervised research and is assessed by anoral examination and nal thesis.

Doctor of Medicine (DM)Duration: two-three years full-time (guide only)

The Doctor of Medicine is a research-based postgraduatedegree for fully qualied medical doctors. It is similar to aPhD but can sometimes be completed more quickly andoften contains a component of clinical research.

Doctor of Engineering (EngD)Duration: four years full-time (guide only)

The EngD is an alternative to the traditional PhD andprovides a more vocationally oriented doctorate inengineering. It encourages the development of innovativethinking while tackling real industrial problems andcombines academic research in an industrial context withtaught modules in related subjects.

Professional Doctorate (PD)Duration: three years full-time (guide only)

Professional Doctorates are doctoral level qualications,

equivalent to traditional PhDs. They are rigorous, part-timeprogrammes of advanced applied study and research,specically designed to meet the needs of practisingprofessionals. They provide a framework for the integrationof professional expertise and scholarly inquiry to explorespecic areas of interest.

Master of Philosophy (MPhil)Duration: one year full-time (guide only)

The MPhil requires research skills and training similar toa PhD yet its scope and complexity are less than thatrequired for a doctorate. You can apply to upgrade to aPhD after one year of study, or two years for part-timestudents. The MPhil is assessed by the submission ofa thesis.

Master of Research (MRes)Duration: one year full-time (guide only)

The MRes offers general research training for thoseintending to pursue a PhD or a career that requiresresearch skills. On an MRes course you will submit adissertation of around 35,000 words, take 20 credits ofgeneric research training and have the option to take upto 40 credits of relevant taught modules. The number oftaught modules you choose to take determines the lengthof your dissertation.

MA/MSc (by research)Duration: one year full-time (guide only)

The MA/MSc (by research) is similar to the MRes but

you can take up to 60 credits of relevant taught modulesand do not have to take 20 credits of generic researchtraining modules. Some programmes have a prescribedstructure of taught modules while in others the decision ismade in consultation with your supervisor. You will submita dissertation of between 25,000 and 45,000 wordsdepending on how many taught modules you chooseto take.
