Vitamins come from the word "Vital" because without them many problems can develop. You also NEED minerals, amino acids as well. Amino acids are the building blocks for life.

Warning Signs of a Crappy Supplement!

1. Not finding the companies name, website or phone number on the label is just abad sign. Is it worth the risk, I don't think so!

2. If the packaging is in a foreign language then this is another warning sign.

3. If the product labeling has misspellings or grammar errors then this is a red flag. Ifthe company is not careful with the label, do you think they are careful withmanufacturing of the product?

4. If the product doesn’t have an air tight seal or if it’s broken then that is not goodand you shouldn't purchase it.

5. If the price is extremely low. This increases the chance of them using cheap ingredients and increases the risk that the product is crappy! This is not always the case, but it's a warning sign.

6. If a products label mentions that it is an alternative to a FDA approved prescriptiondrug or has similar effects. This is a warning sign, prescription drugs should be taken under a qualified physicians care.

7. You can look for a product that has an expiration date that is very far away. If the product does not have an expiration date, then that is usually not good at all.

8. Check with the FDA to see if the product has been recalled by clicking this link to see the FDA Recall List.

9. You could research the laboratory findings of third part organizations. A very famous one is ConsumerLabs.com and they have been testing a variety of supplements for over 10 years.

10. If the product smells like a perfume then the company might be trying to hide something, which could be bad.

11. Avoid Supplements in a liquid form. According to Consumer Reports there is no evidence that liquid supplements are better for absorption than regular ones. You can read more by clicking HERE.

One big negative with liquid supplements is that well you can’t put enteric coating on them and a lot of stuff gets destroyed by stomach acid.

Also the ingredients do not keep their potency as well in liquid form. This means they degrade in quality much faster. But the good news is that it’s liquid and not a pill!

Synthetic Ingredients – It’s estimated that 95% of vitamin supplements being sold are synthetic, because it’s cheaper to produce and are man-made. The drawback is that they deplete your body of other nutrients, and harm the liver. Ouch!

Artificial Colors – They are linked to cancer, allergies and learning problems. This is what “Food Safety News” thinks about them.

Titanium Dioxide – A popular ingredient in sunscreens and even in the multivitaminCentrum. It has been classified by the International Agency of Research on Cancer as a carcinogen, and this means it causes cancer.

It also causes inflammation and genetic damage.

DMAA or Dimethylamylamine – The FDA in the U.S. has banned this ingredient, but is still found in products. It shrinks blood vessels which increases the chance of heart disease, seizures, shortness of breath and pain in the chest.

Comfrey – The FDA recommended in 2001 that manufactures remove this item because it causes severe liver and lung damage.

Colloidal Silver – It is made of tiny silver particles suspended in liquid and has not been proven to provide any positive health claims that some sellers state.

Large doses have been known to give serious health problems, such as seizures, kidney damage, and it interacts with a variety of medications.

Germanium – In 1989 the UK Government warned against the use of this substance because it offers no medical benefit and has serious risks. This stuff irritates the respiratory system, and negatively influences blood.

In the ingredients section avoid too much sugar, preservatives, and additives like shellac, chlorine and fragrances.

What to Look for in a Company

• A company that has been around for a long time. Young companies that are under 10 years of age are more risky. Sadly, 98% of companies don't make it to 10 years.

• A company that uses a certificate of analysis on their products. This certificate ensures that what is on the label actually comes in the product. Without this certificate you don't know and that is risky!

• A company that uses GMP Compliance Manufacturing. Every company says their product is the best and might even have some fancy graphs to support it.

Third party testing is always more reliable because companies are biased right?

Blood Pressure, Cholesterol the Heart and Cardio?

Believe it or not the number 1 reason for death in countries like the U.S. U.K. and Australia is Heart Disease!

Even if it doesn't kill you it can cause many problems such as making it hard for a man to raise the flagpole with lovemaking, memory loss, muscle pains, fatigue and much more.

What you may not know is that inflammation is a big cause as well.

C-Reactive Protein

The overwhelming majority of heart/stroke events are preventable! Most of them are caused through inflammation in the blood… NOT, high cholesterol as many people think.

In fact, only around 50% of fatal heart attack victims have elevated cholesterol. When you have your cholesterol levels checked also ensure that your doctor also checks your C-Reactive Protein which measures inflammation in your blood.

Also stay away from Statin Drugs. There is research that these drugs actually harm the cardiovascular system by hardening the arteries. They also deplete something known asCOQ10, which is very important for the heart and your body.

Another study with 150 thousand women over 10 years by the Women's Health Initiative showed that those taking prescription drugs had a 48% greater chance of developing type 2 diabetes. That is a HUGE number 48%.

How The United States Regulates Supplements

In October 1994, the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) was signed into law by President Clinton in the U.S.

Before this time, dietary supplements were subject to the same regulatory requirementsas were other foods.

This new law, which changed the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, created a new system for the safety and labeling of dietary supplements.

Under DSHEA, the company is responsible for determining that the dietary supplements it manufactures is safe, and that any claims made about it have adequate evidence to show that they are not false or misleading.

This means that dietary supplements do not need approval from the FDA before they are marketed.

Except in the case of a new dietary ingredient, where pre-market review for safety data and other information is required by law.

A firm does not have to provide the FDA with the evidence it relies on to substantiate safety or effectiveness before or after it markets its products.

The FDA has limited resources to analyze the ingredients of a product, including dietary supplements.

• First it focuses these resources on public health emergencies and products that may have caused injury, or illness.

• Then resources go to products thought to be unsafe, fraudulent or in violation of the law.

• The remaining funds are used for routine monitoring of products pulled from store shelves or collected during inspections of manufacturing firms.

So as you can see it’s not that that the FDA doesn’t want to protect consumers, it’s just that they have limited resources.

The agency does not analyze dietary supplements before they are sold to consumers.

The manufacturer is responsible for ensuring that the "Supplement Facts" label and ingredient list are accurate, that the dietary ingredients are safe, and that the content matches the amount declared on the label.

The FDA does not analyze dietary supplements sent to the agency by consumers who want to know their content. Instead, consumers may contact the manufacturer or a commercial laboratory to double check that the ingredients are safe and effective.

In a nutshell, it’s the consumer’s job to ensure a supplement is safe and effective.

How the Australian Government RegulatesDietary Supplements

In Australia most supplements fall within the listable items category, the most lightly regulated category. It’s only required that they provide proof that they don’t contain ingredients that are banned by custom laws.

While the government expects manufactures not to make wild claims on their labels, It’s not heavily enforced.

In conclusion supplements can be marketed with little control over the claims and messages they provide, and many companies take full advantage of this. You can learn more about Australian laws with supplements at this link HERE.

How the European Union GovernmentRegulates Dietary Supplements

In Europe there is something called the Food and Supplement Directive or FSD for short that governs supplements. The scope of the FSD includes only vitamins and minerals.

With regarding botanicals, supplements made from plants there is no EU legislation about them. You can read more by clicking on this link here.

How Canada Regulates Dietary Supplements

Canada system of regulating dietary supplements is more strict that the United States. All manufactures must follow good manufacturing practices and are GMP compliant.

There is a law that only products reviewed and deemed to meet minimal standards of product quality, safety and efficacy claims are permitted to be sold. Unfortunately thousands of products remain unregistered due to a backlog at health Canada.

These products continue to be sold, despite the standards for consumer advertising there seems to be little enforcement of these requirements.
