As the leaves start to drift down from the trees and another Summer Season draws to a close, I’m delighted to be able to announce a packed programme of productions, concerts, events, workshops and weekends for Autumn, Winter and Spring at the Theatre in the Hills.
We make history this year by launching our first ever Pantomime – Cinderella! With amazing sets and dazzling costumes, magical transformations and a glittering finale, plus a large cast of colourful characters, this fun-filled family treat - delivered to the usual PFT standards - will be a new highlight of the Festive season. Book early to ensure you get the best seats!As usual, the Perthshire Amber Festival (29th October to 7th November) will be getting the Season off to a rousing start. This ten day celebration of Dougie MacLean’s music is six years old this year and features five fantastic concerts here at PFT.And then there’s Force Of Nature, the Enchanted Forest sound and light show in Pitlochry’s Faskally Wood. This truly spectacular event gets bigger with each passing year - in 2010, over 20,000 visitors are expected. Prepare to be enthralled by fantastic sights and amazing original sounds in Perthshire’s Big Tree landscape.Doris Day, Buddy Holly and Jerry Lee Lewis tributes, not to mention living legends Showaddywaddy will take to the stage this Season, together with a couple of very special appearances: cellist Julian Lloyd Webber and the popular father and son team Peter and Dan Snow.
Opera lovers will be delighted to learn that Scottish Opera return (for one night only!) to perform Bizet’s Carmen, whilst Swansea City Opera return for two nights with A Viennese Whirl and Rossini’s ever popular The Barber Of Seville.Moscow Ballet also make a welcome return with Coppélia: what more need be said?Author (and musician) Louis de Bernières, comic genius Phil Cool, and Coast presenter Christopher Somerville are just some of the headline writers and personalities featuring in the next Winter Words Festival in January and February. See pages 18-19 for further details.Active Arts workshops span a broad range of subjects, including Digital Photography, Dance, Watercolour Painting and Rock Guitar! Accents On Acting with Lynn Bains Lynn has been accent coach on every American play at PFT since 1989 and is widely regarded as Scotland’s top American accent coach. In this workshop you’ll learn how to research, choose and prefect an authentic American accent. Day One starts with a focus on 2 or 3 accents, with plenty of time for practical work. Day Two sees Lynn direct you in short scenes, putting your newfound skills to the test. This will give you the confidence you need to deliver a convincing American accent! Floral Ideas And Inspirations For Spring with Carol MacGill Carol will teach you how to create your own contemporary floral design using the flowers of Spring (and not a daffodil in sight!). Force Of Nature Enchanted Forest 2010
This year’s show, Force of Nature, allows you to explore Faskally Wood and set your senses buzzing with dazzling visuals, sumptuous sounds and interactive displays. With lighting design by the award-winning Simon Wilkinson, and an original music score, Force of Nature will show Perthshire Big Tree Country in a new light and truly spark your imagination.
The Enchanted Forest is Scotland’s premier sound and light experience and attracts around 20,000 visitors every year, so booking tickets in advance is a must. This year, the event is managed by the Highland Perthshire Community Interest Company, who have added their own touches of Highland hospitality and welcome to the event, bringing in delicious local produce from Hettie’s and, of course, augmenting the forest activities with the Highland Perthshire Autumn Festival. Beautiful gypsies, obsession, bullfighters and some of the liveliest rhythms in opera . . . it can only be the much loved Carmen. This new production is set in 1960s Spain, a country firmly entrenched in General Franco’s right-wing regime. Women are oppressed, the gypsies ghettoised, the country is riddled with poverty, and black-market smuggling is rife.
As a woman wanting to break free, the stakes are high for Carmen. An outspoken gypsy with a beautiful face and a fiery temper, she sets her sights on the soldier Don José. His desire leads him to deny his friends and position and he is soon living a life outside the law. As his relationship with Carmen disintegrates and she leaves him for another, he sets out to prove his love - but Carmen has seen the future in her tarot cards and it isn’t a happy one.
Bizet’s boldly seductive opera has been one of the world’s favourites for over a century. From the sultry Habanera to the naively passionate Flower Song and the rousing Toreador’s Song,

Perthshire Amber - The Dougie MacLean Festival 29th October to 7th November 2010
Friday 29th October, 7.30pm Dougie MacLean & Julie Fowlis This rare musical combination of two of Scotland’s finest musicians will prove irresistible and is likely to sell out in advance, so get your tickets early.
“Dougie MacLean is a performer of extraordinary warmth and ease . . . he has a knack for turning the experiences of his own life into something universally understood, as well as a gift for bestowing each with just the right melody” (The Scotsman).
Julie Fowlis “could be the first Scottish Gaelic crossover star in the making” (Daily Telegraph). Mark Radcliffe hailed her voice and songs as “enchanting, beguiling and as fascinating as songs by Kate Bush and Björk” and KT Tunstall described her voice as “formidable and amazingly rhythmic”. Her band will include the wonderful musicians Éamon Doorley (bouzouki), Highland fiddler Duncan Chisholm, driving guitarist Tony Byrne from Dublin and award-winning bodhrán player Martin O’Neill.
Saturday 30th October, 7.30pm The Heritage Concert This concert will see Dougie MacLean, along with a stunning line-up of musicians, share his take on some of the songs that inspired him to become a songwriter himself. Usually only sung around his kitchen table, this will be a rare chance to see Dougie perform these special songs from his past, from traditional ballads to songs from his youth and those penned by the troubadours from whom he learned his trade. He will, of course, include some of his classic arrangements of the songs of Burns and Tannahill.
Sunday 31st October, 7.30pm Dougie MacLean & Crooked Still (USA) This will be a stunning combination of music in one evening!
Dougie MacLean will be joined by his good friends violinist Greg Lawson and accordionist Pete Garnett. Each is already a festival favourite and between them they have an awesome musical pedigree (Scottish Chamber Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Mr. McFall’s Chamber, Salsa Celtica, The Dougie MacLean Band and, of course, Moishe’s Bagel!). Greg’s playing is characterised by an intensity and a tone which sings every inch of the way and Pete’s rootsy box groove will be the perfect compliment to Dougie’s songs and melodies.10

“Dougie MacLean has created a wee gem of a festival in his home county . . . a drop of Amber nectar!” However, this 10-day event is no longer ‘wee’, as over 6,000 people from 17 countries last year attended this “unique festival which shares inspiring music, celebrates the history and culture of Perthshire and showcases beautiful scenery” (The Scotsman).
The 2010 Festival includes five concerts during the two weekends here at PFT, plus a host of other interesting events such as Open Mic sessions, talks, guided walks, workshops, displays and the weekday early evening Cabaret Amber – all back due to popular demand!

Following the success of last year’s sell-out concert with Beoga, Dougie MacLean is delighted to welcome the hugely respected Irish band Grada, who have received glowing reviews for their albums and performances which always highlight their energy, musicality and vocal mastery.

Saturday 6th November, 7.30pm Dougie Maclean & Friends This concert brings together some of Dougie’s musical friends, old and new, to create a wonderfully eclectic and talented line-up The final concert always has a special atmosphere, with unexpected combinations and lots of surprises!
Special guests will be added right up to the last minute, but confirmed for the line up already are Jen and Janice Clark, David Allison, The Michael McGoldrick Trio and Karen Matheson with Donald Shaw.

Relive Julia’s journey, which began in Nikka Chu and moved along and up to the Tempe Tshao at 4,336m, before crossing into the high mountain terrain where back in 1949, the famous plant hunters Sherriff and Ludlow scoured the landscape in search of extraordinary flora.

Veteran broadcaster Peter Snow and his son Dan will talk about their lives in TV broadcasting, including the making of the BBC series Battlefield Britain and Dan’s recent Empire Of The Seas series on the Royal Navy - not to mention the infamous ‘Swing-ometer’!
Peter’s new book To War With Wellington tells the story of Britain’s triumphant war against Napoleon 200 years ago, one of the most successful campaigns in military history. The Duke of Wellington’s battle against Napoleon started with a tiny foothold in Portugal in1808 and ended with the decisive battle of Waterloo in 1815 and the destruction of Napoleonic France.
Dan’s book, Death Or Victory, relates the epic history of the battle of Quebec, the death of Wolfe and the beginnings of Britain’s empire in North America.

Heidi will be joined for this special performance by fiddle player and multi instrumentalist John McCusker, who has long been renowned for his skill at transcending musical boundaries, and by song writing genius Boo Hewerdine, whose credits include penning The Patience Of Angels for Eddi Reader.
Heidi is well known to Scottish audiences as the former lead singer with the Irish-American super group Cherish The Ladies. Her first album, In Love And Light, propelled her into the spotlight; Heidi’s latest album The Last Star, celebrates her traditional influences, whilst giving her distinctive voice its own space to shine.
Heidi has toured extensively with Eddi Reader and Drever-McCusker-Woomble, whilst McCusker has shared stages with Bonnie Raitt, Patti Smith, Steve Earle, Roseanne Cash, The Waterboys, Idlewild and Jools Holland.
This will be a night of lively entertainment from three highly accomplished and talented musicians.

This is a unique venue with multiple spaces capable of delivering a range of options for ceremonies, wedding receptions and evening festivities by a dediated team of highly professional event managers, technicians, culinary and entertainment experts to ensure things run smoothly on your special day.
David Douglas Pavilion Perched on a hill behind the theatre within Explorers Garden, this dramatic pavilion provides a stunning view across the Tummel valley. Built entirely from trees discovered by Scottish Plant Hunter, David Douglas (of Douglas Fir fame), its open balcony provides a breathtaking setting in which to take your vows.
The pavilion offers seating for up to 35 guests. It’s the perfect spot for an intimate ceremony and of course, the Garden offers a fabulous back-drop for your special photographs.
Open between late March and early November, the pavilion is available for wedding ceremonies, small receptions and celebrations. Hire from £250.

Now in its third year, Art in the Garden has become a firm fixture in the Explorers calendar. Once again, we are delighted to play host to a broad range of art and craft activities, with a variety of practising artists from across
Scotland delivering a series of hands-on workshops. Already confirmed are:
Dry Stane Dykingwith John HughesDiscover the ancient rural craft of dry stane dyking. Centuries-old techniques will be revealed and you’ll learn to recognise and name different types of stone (throughways, heartening, flatties!) whilst creating unique features and walls.

Birchcraftwith Bryce ReynardIn this fascinating workshop, Bryce will show you traditional techniques and designs to use when creating and making with Birch. As well as having your own pieces to take home, you’ll learn new weaving techniques, using birch bark, twigs and roots to create interesting and unusual things!

Artwork for Sale!A selling exhibition will be held on Sat 30th April and Sunday 1st May (10.00am to 5.00pm) in and around the David Douglas Pavilion, in the Himalayan section of Explorers. There will be an exciting variety of garden sculpture (including the wonderful bird sculptures of Simon Griffiths), planters, baskets, wooden vessels and willow hurdles.
Live Willow Weavingwith Trevor Leat Participants will create their own piece of living willow structure, such as a garden archway or seat, even a arbour! Plant it once you get home and watch it grow! Beginners or improvers welcome.
