Practice Makes Perfect...or at Least BetterIN THEIR BESTSELLING BOOK, The Leadership Challenge, authors Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner present a practical, accessible, and evidence-based leadership model with a simple, yet profound, principle at its core: leadership is a measurable and learnable set of behaviors. Embodied in the book’s foundation model, The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership®, is the notion that leadership is not an event, but a process that requires on-going and deliberate practice. This new leadership development tool, The Leadership Challenge Practice Book, serves as a practical daily support resource for leaders looking to extend their Leadership Challenge journey.

Incorporating the 30 behaviors from the Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI), The Leadership Challenge Practice Book presents daily practice routines and activities to help leaders become more effective by increasing the fre-quency with which they exhibit The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership®. It is intended to be used as a daily, ongoing practice guide. The book’s five sections follow a Monday through Friday format, with each day offering a different LPI behavior focus and supporting practice activities. Monthly and quarterly practice activities are offered at the end of each section along with a quick progress checklist called Make It a Daily Habit.

The Leadership Challenge Practice Book includes everything you need to reinforce a powerful learning experi-ence and enables you to put your leadership skills into action, advancing the projects and people that matter most to you and your work.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

Dan Schwab has more than twenty years of experience as a trainer, facilitator, and coach and has consistently made leader-ship development his passion and focus. He is currently a Certified Master of The Leadership Challenge.

An Innovative Method for Enhancing Vision SkillsTHROUGHOUT 25 YEARS OF LEADERSHIP RESEARCH, bestselling Leadership Challenge authors Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner have consistently found that Inspire a Shared Vision is the practice that differentiates leaders from other credible people. They’ve also found that, for most leaders, it is the toughest practice. Vision is one of those words that evokes ridicule and awe, cynicism and mystery, confusion and inspiration. It’s one of the most misunderstood words in the leadership lexicon. In The Leadership Challenge, vision is defined as:

An IDEAL and UNIQUE IMAGE of the FUTURE for the COMMON GOOD

This hands-on workbook is designed to help you get more comfortable and stronger at Inspiring a Shared Vision. It will guide you through the process of developing a clearer picture of that ideal future, and then it will help you to communicate it more effectively to those who can help you implement it. In addition, the workbook contains sections that will enable you to make your team a more forward-thinking group and your organization a more visionary place. And because visions are co-created and shared, there is a section on how to build visionary skills in others. Following the step-by-step process outlined in the book you will be able to:

• Draft an effective vision statement• Craft a persuasive vision presentation• Test that presentation• Create different versions of that presentation to suit the audience/situation• Seek feedback from your audience and evaluate your vision effectiveness

Each section contains activities to help you focus on the skills needed to become more adept at looking ahead and creating the workplace and the world you would like to see.

Built on the notion that leadership development is an ongo-ing process rather than an event, this refresher program aims to address two big challenges facing leadership development professionals today: helping leaders remain focused on implementing their new skills and behaviors over time, and sustaining their enthusiasm for practice and learning following the initial leadership development program experience. Any leader who has completed either The Leadership Challenge® Workshop or the Leadership Is Everyone’s Business Workshop, and the Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) as part of his or her own leadership devel-opment journey will benefit from this follow-up program. In particular, each of the programs’ 90-minute modules is designed to speak to the questions and issues most often faced by leaders who have been working to implement The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership® for at least the previous nine to twelve months.

Stay Focused on Your Values

This is an excellent tool for conceptualizing values clari-fication, as put forth in The Leadership Challenge. This workshop can help any leader to clarify the personal and shared values that will guide them in all situations. The Values Cards are pre-printed with words such as creativ-ity, loyalty, and teamwork so that participants can identify and record the values that are most meaningful to them. After the workshop, the cards become a take-away that can be used as a tool for reflection and an aide to clarify values with their constituents. This package includes 1 sample deck of the Values Cards.

The Accountability ExperienceLinda Galindo

Accountability is a hot issue in business as organizations face the toughest recession in years. Yet the notion of accountability is confused with punishment, fault, blame, and guilt. Accountability expert Linda Galindo, states the only true accountability is “personal accountability” and the only way to achieve it is to take responsibility for the outcomes of your choices, behaviors and actions.

This training program outlines a three-step process to accountability: 1. Claiming ownership of a task (Responsibility)

2. Taking personal action to complete the task (Self Empowerment)

3. Answering for the Outcome (Accountability)

The three-step process is tied together using the clear agreement form that allows managers and employees to create clear agreements around key assignments and track progress more effectively.

Courageous LeadershipA Program for Using Courage to Transform the Workplace Bill Treasurer

Courage is the first virtue of leadership success. Leaders require courage to make bold decisions even when there are dissent-ers, to say what needs to be said no matter the consequences, and to place their trust in those they manage. The Courageous Leadership workshop introduces a new organizational development practice called courage-building, guiding participants to:

» Learn about the three different types of courage and when (and how) to use each

» Gain insight into your own “courage history” so you can use your past to strengthen your future

» Understand the impact fear has on personal and organizational performance

» Learn about two distinct ways of leading, and approaches for inspiring more courageous behavior among the people with whom you work

» Develop an action plan for extending the value of the workshop

» Step up to challenges more readily, embrace change more fully, and speak up more assertively

Bridging the Leadership DivideBuilding High-Performance Leadership Relationships Across Generations

Ron A. Carucci, Josh Epperson, Lela Tepavac

Today, generational differences are impacting the workplace to an unprecedented degree. The ability to build bridges between leaders of generational differences has never been more essential.

This workshop will invite leaders of multiple generations to practi-cal conversations that help remove the inherent barriers to produc-tive relationships between incumbent and emerging leaders. While there is much information available on generational demographics, the focus of this program is on the relational aspects of generational dynamics.

Based on research within organizations, Carucci and colleagues have identified six patterns that distinguish distressed relationships from powerful relation-ships between incumbent leaders and emerging leaders. The patterns are indicated as: rank, meaningful conversation, inclusion and engagement, dreaming, generosity, and gratitude. The workshop will explain and assess these patterns as well as explore how these patterns promote or hinder cross-generational relationships. The workshop includes case studies, role plays, journaling exercises, and action planning tools.

This accompanying participant workbook will include case studies, self- reflection exercises, and strategies for a follow-up development plan.

Leading Through TransitionsKerry Bunker, Michael Wakefield

From the Center for Creative Leadership—#1 Ranked Brand in Leadership Education by BusinessWeek

Change and transition are no longer periodic events. Today, they are the ongoing and natural state of most organizations. And while many leaders have become skilled at effecting and responding to structural side of change (creating a vision, reorganizing, or restructuring), it’s rare that they fully grasp or focus on the human side of change: grieving, letting go, building hope, and learning. This workshop helps leaders understand the need to balance the dynamic tension between seemingly paradoxical leadership attributes such as being tough while simultaneously expressing appropriate empathy, catalyzing change while facilitating emotional transition, and having a sense of urgency while being realistically patient. It provides sound research, solid frameworks, and practical resources to help par-ticipants assess both individual and organizational patterns of leadership behavior in the face of change, which in turn allows leaders to evaluate what’s working, what’s not working, and what’s missing.

Leading Across Differences Kelly Hannum, Belinda B. McFeeters, Lize Booysen

Dynamics in our global society are increasingly spill-ing over into the workplace. The need for practical, rel-evant, and usable information about how to lead in our increasing flat world is in high demand. This timely training tool provides examples of and perspectives on concepts and situations important to leading across dif-ferences. With 14 rich cases gleaned from interviews of over a hundred people in over twenty organizations on five conti-nents, the authors offer new ways of thinking about leadership chal-lenges. It’s Okay to Be the Boss Bruce Tulgan

Fight the Under-management Epidemic

In today’s high-pressure workplace managing people has become increasingly important in maintaining competitive advantage. Current research reveals that employees don’t quit organizations, they quit their immediate supervisor. And when an employee walks out the door, they take all of their talent, knowledge, and experience with them. So how are managers “managing” today? Most managers take a hands-off approach. They empower employees by leaving them alone to succeed or fail on their own accord. Besides, managers don’t have the time to manage when faced with all of their other responsibilities.

Stepping UpA Road Map for New Supervisors

Miki Lane, Marilynne Malkin, Wendy Shanken, Dennis Cavendish

Give first-time supervisors an accurate, real-life picture of what it means to be a supervisor, the expectations for the position, the skills and knowledge required, and what it takes to succeed in the role. This practical, hands-on supervisor-readiness workshop is packed with solid, practical advice to orient a new or aspiring supervisor to the role and lays the groundwork for future success. Stepping Up: » Explains the role of supervisor

» Defines the challenges for the first-time supervisor and describes common pitfalls

» Includes performance equation assessments

» Contains information on supervisory competencies

» Includes a handy self-assessment and a personalized road map.

For HR departments, trainers, and consultants, Stepping Up is an easy-to-facilitate workshop. The facilitator’s guide comes complete with workshop instructions, a variety of ready-to-use icebreakers, interactive activities, closers, readymade PowerPoint slides, and supporting materials. The interactive par-ticipant’s workbook includes job aids and checklists, worksheets, case studies, and a useful self-assessment questionnaire that pinpoints areas for growth.

Managing for Employee EngagementA Workshop Based on The Three Signs of a Miserable Job Patrick M. Lencioni

Best-selling author and business guru Patrick Lencioni’s  management development program will improve employ-ee engagement, job satisfaction, and performance.

According to Patrick Lencioni, three underlying factors will make a job miserable, and they can apply to virtually all jobs regardless of the nature of the work being done. The three signs are at first glance obvious and seemingly easy to resolve. And yet they remain largely unaddressed in most organizations.

This management development program is designed to help managers more effectively engage, motivate, and retain employees by eliminating the three causes of job misery.

VIRTUAL TEAM SUCCESS

DARLEEN DEROSA RICHARD LEPSINGER

A PRACTICAL GUIDE FOR WORKING

AND LEADING FROM A DISTANCE

Mobile is a powerful new tool for support-

ing organizational performance, including

a wide-variety of learning opportunities

including innovation, collaboration, research,

and design. Mobile generates new products,

services, and helps solve problems. Whether

providing needed tools, augmenting learning,

or connecting individuals, mobile devices are

empowering individuals and organizations.

Designing mLearning is a hands-on resource

that presents step-by-step guidance for

designing, delivering, and deploying mobile

solutions, covering both the background model

and pragmatic considerations for successfully

navigating mobile projects. The book takes

an integrated approach to mobile learning

regardless of the device used. Written by Dr.

Clark Quinn, a noted leader in the mLearning

revolution, Designing mLearning debunks com-

monly held myths about mLearning, defines

the myriad opportunities for mobile, contains

real-world, illustrative examples, includes

implementation concerns, and places mobile

learning in an overall strategic plan.

Designing mLearning is written for instruc-

tional designers, developers, media experts,

managers, and anyone with responsibility for

supporting performance in organizations.

While the focus is on the design of solutions,

the book addresses the critical organizational

issues to assist the larger agenda of mobilizing

the organization.

The information outlined in this groundbreak-

ing guide can be applied across the mobile

device spectrum and provides a systematic

and integrated suite of conceptual frameworks

to guide designers to pragmatic and effective

solutions.

TAPPING INTO THE

MOBILE REVOLUTION FOR

ORGANIZATIONAL PERFORMANCE

Essential resources for training and HR professionalsAn Essential Knowledge Resource

“Quinn takes you by the hand and leads you carefully and comprehensively through the m-learning maze of devices, models, examples, and designs, at the same time demonstrat-ing that mobile learning is more than being about learning, but is also about performance.”

—JANE HART, founder & CEO, Centre for Learning and Performance Technologies

“Stop thinking mLearning is miniaturized eLearning. Just as digital video has enabled entirely new forms of entertainment and communication, mLearning enables power-ful new (and old) performance solutions at very low costs. Clark omits the deafening hyperbole and delivers today’s best source of clear, complete, and useful mLearning guidance for us all.”

—MICHAEL ALLEN, CEO, Allen Interactions

“The future is mobile. It will rock you more than the web did. And Clark Quinn has written the missing manual.”

—JAY CROSS, CEO, Internet Time, and author, Informal Learning

“Those of us in learning and development know we spend a disproportionate amount of time on formal training, missing opportunities to support workers where real learn-ing occurs: in work, every day. With a wealth of examples, Clark Quinn provides a clear, useful guidebook for using 21st-century tools to support our performers as they enact their work and apply new learning.”

—JANE BOZARTH, Ed.D., author, Social Media for Trainers and Better Than Bullet Points

“Yes, this is a handy book about mobile learning and support. But it’s also a thoughtful nudge towards rethinking what we mean when we say we are educators.”

—ALLISON ROSSETT, San Diego State University

“Clark Quinn sets the pace for a swift race toward mobile everything. His thought- leadership and focus on solutions that work make him the one to watch, to read, and to learn from now!”

—MARCIA CONNER, advisor in business culture and collaboration, co-author of The New Social Learning: A Guide to Transforming Organization Through Social Media
