8:00am Holy Communion

10:30am Parish Communion*

The Order of Service is contained in the separate Service Book.

Opening Hymn*

1. Come, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire,

and lighten with celestial fire;

thou the anointing Spirit art,

who dost thy sevenfold gifts impart:

2. Thy blessèd unction from above

is comfort, life, and fire of love;

enable with perpetual light

the dullness of our blinded sight:

3. Anoint and cheer our soilèd face

with the abundance of thy grace:

keep far from foes, give peace at home;

where thou art guide no ill can come.

4. Teach us to know the Father, Son,

and thee, of both, to be but One;

that through the ages all along

this may be our endless song,

Praise to thy eternal merit,

Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.

Words: based on Veni, Creator Spiritus, Latin 8th or 9th century, John Cosin (1594-1672)

Music: Veni Creator (Mechlin), plainsong mode viii

(Ancient & Modern – 362)

Collect

God, who as at this time

taught the hearts of your faithful people

by sending to them the light of your Holy Spirit:

grant us by the same Spirit

to have a right judgement in all things

and evermore to rejoice in his holy comfort;

through the merits of Christ Jesus our Saviour,

who is alive and reigns with you,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever. Amen.

First Reading – Numbers 11.24-30

Moses went out and told the people the words of the LORD; and he gathered seventy

elders of the people, and placed them all around the tent. Then the LORD came down in

the cloud and spoke to him, and took some of the spirit that was on him and put it on

the seventy elders; and when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied. But they did

not do so again.

Page 4: Pewsheet - 8 June 2014 (Oakham)

4

Two men remained in the camp, one named Eldad, and the other named Medad, and the

spirit rested on them; they were among those registered, but they had not gone out to

the tent, and so they prophesied in the camp. And a young man ran and told Moses,

‘Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.’ And Joshua son of Nun, the assistant of

Moses, one of his chosen men, said, ‘My lord Moses, stop them!’ But Moses said to him,

‘Are you jealous for my sake? Would that all the Lord’s people were prophets, and that

the LORD would put his spirit on them!’ And Moses and the elders of Israel returned to

the camp.

Second Reading – Acts 2.1-21

When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly

from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire

house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a

tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to

speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.

Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at

this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them

speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, ‘Are not all

these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own

native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and

Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya

belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and

Arabs – in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.’ All

were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, ‘What does this mean?’ But others

sneered and said, ‘They are filled with new wine.’

But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them: ‘Men of Judea

and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed,

these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. No, this is

what was spoken through the prophet Joel:

“In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and

your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and

your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those

days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I will show portents in the

heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. The sun

shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord’s

great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Gradual Hymn*

1. O King enthroned on high,

thou Comforter divine,

blest Spirit of all truth, be nigh

and make us thine.

2. Thou art the source of life,

thou art our treasure-store;

give us thy peace and end our strife

for evermore.

3. Descend, O heavenly Dove,

abide with us alway;

and in the fullness of thy love

cleanse us, we pray.

Words: based on 8th century Greek, John Brownlie (1857-1925)

Music: Temple, Henry Walford Davies (1869-1941)

(Ancient & Modern – 256)

Gospel – John 20.19-23

It was evening on the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the

disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews. Jesus came and stood among

them and said, ‘Peace be with you.’ After he said this, he showed them his hands and

his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them

again, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.’ When he had

said this, he breathed on them and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. If you

forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are

retained.’

Offertory Hymn*

1. Be present, Spirit of the Lord,

let sounds of earth be dumb;

the Father's love be shed abroad,

the dew of blessing on us poured:

O silent Spirit, come!

O silent Spirit, come!

2. In power unseen upon us rest,

your gracious gifts impart:

a mind renewed, a spirit blessed,

a life where Christ is manifest,

an understanding heart,

an understanding heart.

3. Love's sovereign work of grace fulfil,

our souls to Christ incline,

intent to do the Father's will

and stand by faith before him still

in righteousness divine,

in righteousness divine.

4. O Spirit come, and with us stay;

make every heart your home.

So work in us that we who pray

may walk with Christ in wisdom's way:

O Holy Spirit, come!

O Holy Spirit, come!

Communion Anthem*

Listen sweet Dove unto my song,

and spread thy golden wings in me;

hatching my tender heart so long,

till it get wing, and flie away with thee.

Such glorious gifts thou didst bestow,

that the earth did like a heav’n appeare;

the starres were coming down to know

if they might mend their wages, and serve here.

The sunne, which once did shine alone,

hung down his head, and wisht for night,

when he beheld twelve sunnes for one

going about the world, and giving light.

Lord, though we change, thou art the same;

the same sweet God of love and light:

restore this day, for thy great name,

unto his ancient and miraculous right.

Words: from The Temple (1633), George Herbert

Music: Grayston Ives (b 1948)

Communion Hymn*

Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me;

Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me;

break me, melt me, mould me, fill me;

Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.

Words & Music: Daniel Iverson (1890-1977), arr Peter Moger (b 1964)

Post Communion Prayer

Faithful God,

who fulfilled the promises of Easter

by sending us your Holy Spirit

and opening to every race and nation

the way of life eternal:

open our lips by your Spirit,

that every tongue may tell of your glory;

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Page 7: Pewsheet - 8 June 2014 (Oakham)

7

Final Hymn*

1. O Spirit of the living God,

in all the fullness of thy grace,

wherever human feet have trod,

descend upon our fallen race.

2. Give tongues of fire and hearts of love

to preach the reconciling word;

anoint with power from heaven above

whenever gospel truth is heard.

3. Let darkness turn to radiant light,

confusion vanish from your path;

those who are weak inspire with might:

let mercy triumph over wrath!

4. O Spirit of our God, prepare

the whole wide world the Lord to meet;

breathe out new life, like morning air,

till hearts of stone begin to beat.

5. Baptize the nations; far and near

the triumph of the cross record;

till Christ in glory shall appear

and every race declare him Lord! Amen.

Words: James Montgomery (1771-1854), adapted by Compilers of Hymns for Today’s Church 1982

Music: Gonfalan Royal, Percy Carter Buck (1871-1947)
