DROPS Program
(Dropped Objects Prevention Scheme)
Over the years within the industry, it has been recognized that there has been
a high number of incidents of dropped / falling objects within drilling
derrick structures. The potential for this type of incident to severely injure
personnel or cause material damage on the drill floor and in the surroundingarea is very high.
Objective
Petrosantander omania is intended as a guide to eliminating the
incidence of dropped objects from within drilling derrick structures.
!s such, the overall objectives of the "OP# model are$
%liminate injury to people.
%liminate the incidence of damage sustained in the derrick
structure.
%liminate damage to other associated derrick e&uipment.

Strategy
OVERALL
The "OP# model, if followed closely, will reduce the number of
dropped objects from within the drilling derrick structures. The
principal actions re&uired to successfully adopt the "OP# model, include$
'. (orm a joint worgro!p with the crews and sites involved, with

The orkgroup should identify areas or zones which have the potential
to create a dropped object incident 0initially the derrick will be

Step 01 Awareness ampaign
aise the awareness of and alert everyone as to the nature of the
problem and the actual and potential conse&uences of dropped
objects from within drilling derricks. This may be achieved by
reviewing country specific incident reports for this type of event
and highlighting the problem, utilising a poster campaign,
-onversations should be held with individuals and teams to raise
awareness of the problems and its conse&uences and what has to bedone to eliminate the problems.

"ivide the derrick into small manageable sections to help you defineareas. There are no rules to determine these areas or the number of
zones, however it should be logical and it may be helpful to select
obvious physical boundaries to ensure areas are clearly understood and
no e&uipment is overlooked from your analysis and inspection.
*ncluded in your presentation pack is an actual "OP# survey
completed here in #audi !rabia, this gives a different option as to howto sort the derrick zones.
*dentify the "errick 9ones. "ivide the derrick into smallmanageable sections to help you define areas for identification. The
number of zones will depend on the size of derrick and the amount
of e&uipment in the derrick. Typically five zones are used.

thorough process needs to be undertaken to ensure that thee&uipment being used in the derrick structure is as per design. *t

and its maintenance re&uirements is per the anufacturerBs latest
recommendations.
Step 91 A!tomated < ;echanised Derric Systems
The principles as described in this presentation for preventing dropped
objects do not change in the automated environments of remote
controlled drilling systems. 3owever, stringent inspection routines and
familiarity with the proper use of automated systems must be
maintained at all times. "ropped objects as a result of collision can be

clash and coordination, which should be designed to prevent
interference between hoisting and drill floor/derrick e&uipment. The
method used mostly is to identify the zones and spatial corridors whichmore than one piece of e&uipment can occupy. 9oning depends on

The main cause of dropped objects in the drilling industry has been
winch operations.
The principle of reducing the incident is based on the fact that the
winch is designed / installed and maintained properly. The
operation of the winch is such that the people are knowledgeable
of the system, are trained and operate the winch within the design
criteria.
