Other changes include the addition of a historical feature(inside the yellow page listings in the center of the magazine),a feature devoted to the history behind oil and gas discoveriesin Alaska and northern Canada, and a column about peoplewho have left Alaska and northern Canada’s oil patch for partsunknown.

Company news stories and briefs,Q&A company profiles, photos from companies doing business in Alaska and northernCanada, and the directory listings are also included,as theyhave been in the past.

The purpose of the directory is to say thankyou to Petroleum News advertisers for supportingour weekly newspaper. WHAT’S IN A NAME?Stories behind the naming

of northern discoveries

Prudhoe Bay: Perfunctory christening of fieldin 1968 obscures 142-year origin of name

By ROSE RAGSDALEFor Petroleum Directory

Explorers and adventurers from theorigins of human history have claimedthe privilege of naming discoveries. Sotoo have geologists and geophysicistsclaimed the honor of naming theprospects, wells and fields that populatethe chronicle of oil and gas explorationin Alaska.

Some names sprang from inspiration, some stemmed from observation and yetothers grew out ofdesperation. But forthe modern-dayexplorers whomapped Alaska’s oilpatch, the naming ofkey places and pro-jects along the wayreflects a time-hon-ored industry tradi-tion.

Many of thenames came fromgeographic features, and some of thesewere christened byU.S. GeologicalSurvey geologistswho applied themonikers as theymapped the area, according to retiredAlaska geologist GilMull.

USGS bench-marks along theSagavanirktok River on Alaska’s NorthSlope, for example, were given women’snames, such as “Susie” and “Nora,” andsome of the early exploration wells onthe Slope were named after these bench-marks, Mull said in a recent interview.

Atlantic Richfield Co. christened oneof its first exploratory wells on the cen-tral North Slope “Susie” in the mid-1960s.“Susie” turned out to be a dry hole.

“Whether the geologists named the

benchmarks after girlfriends, wives orwhoever they happened to spend theweekend with in the cathouse inFairbanks, we’ll never know,” laughedMull.

Proximity figures in oil giant’s nameThe stories behind many names, how-

ever, have not been lost to history. HowAlaska’s giant oil field, Prudhoe Bay, gotits name is one such story.

Obviously, the oil field was namedafter the nearest geographic feature,Prudhoe Bay.

But the reason the field is calledPrudhoe Bay is because ARCO’s discov-ery well was dubbed Prudhoe Bay StateWell No. 2 and it was drilled a one to oneand a half miles from the actual bay, Mullsaid.

“In correspondence, we would referto a structure or feature by the nearestgeographic landmark,” Mull recalled.

Most of the Prudhoe Bay oil field isonshore, but part of it extended offshoreunder the bay, he added.

Harry Jamison, district manager forARCO’s exploration program at the time, said Prudhoe Bay was the most promi-nent geographic feature nearby.

“There’s not much on that coastal ter-rain to choose from,” observed Jamison, also now retired.

“Calling the field Prudhoe Bay proba-bly resulted from a consensus betweenJohn Sweet and me,” he added. Sweetwas ARCO’s exploration manager whenthe field was discovered.

Brits play early role in choiceStill, how did Prudhoe Bay, itself, get

its name? That’s another story, said Mull.British explorer Sir John Franklin,

looking for the Northwest Passage, named the bay after a classmate in 1826,he said.

Franklin traversed the northeasterncoast of Alaska, traveling west from themouth of the Mackenzie River in the1820s. Just west of Prudhoe Bay, Franklingave up on a plan to rendezvous withCapt. Frederick W. Beechy of the RoyalNavy in Barrow and returned to Canada.

During the trip he christened quite afew Alaska landmarks after his friendsand acquaintances. These includedPrudhoe Bay, which he named afterAlgernon Percy, fourth Baron of Prudhoe, who also was the last Duke ofNorthumberland.

Percy served with Franklin in theRoyal Navy when both men wereteenagers. His titles died with him in1865.

Franklin also named other BeaufortSea landmarks, including Flaxman Island,

Foggy Island, Demarcation Point andBeechy Point.

On a subsequent voyage in the 1840s,

the ill-fated Franklin got lost and died, along with his crew, after his shipbecame mired in Arctic pack ice.

Q.Who are the company’smain clients?

A.We have a broad clientbase including the major Alaskaoil companies, governmentagencies, mining, fishing, variousutility companies and many pri-vate contractors.

Q.How many employeesdoes Arctic Structures have? How many in each of its loca-tions?

A.The Anchorage officemaintains a full-time staff ofseven, and our production facili-ty ranges from 15 to about 50employees depending on cur-rent projects. Our Valdez opera-tions employ about 12 peopleyear round and as many as 30 in the sum-mer months.

Q.Describe your essential facilities ingeneral terms.

A.The Palmer manufacturing facility con-sists of a 60,000-square foot shop specifical-ly laid out with overhead cranes to efficient-ly construct modular buildings.

Q.What is Arctic Structures’mainstrength, i.e. its edge over the competition?

A.Arctic Structures is known as thelargest, most prestigious local manufacturerof modular buildings for both temporaryand permanent use as office buildings,con-struction camps, industrial facilities, schools, classrooms and housing. All of our buildingsare constructed in Alaska and are built towithstand the state’s harsh environment. Our modulars have worked well with thelogistical difficulties of reaching remote oiland mining industry locations.Fortunately, our knowledgeable crew has many years ofexperience in setting up these buildingsunder extreme conditions.Because thebuildings are constructed locally,we alsohave the edge in meeting very short time-lines.Another plus is eliminating freightcosts associated with bringing facilities infrom other states.

Our rental fleet is designed to withstandthe Alaska terrain; these units are all builtlocally and are consistently well maintained. We own a fleet of over 120 units consistingprimarily of office trailers. Also included inthe rental fleet are break room trailers, self-contained bath units, kitchens, water and

waste-water storage units, dormitories andwarehouse trailers. We offer monthly leaserates with reductions based on three, six,12or 24-month lease commitments.

We provide delivery and set-up of ourunits making it very convenient for a con-tractor starting up a new job site. All trailershave electric heat, lights, telephone and arecomfortable and attractive;most are in newcondition and built within the last fiveyears. We are continually manufacturingnew trailers to add to our fleet and accom-modate our clients.

Q.What new markets, clients and/orprojects did Arctic Structures attract in thelast year?

A. In the last year we constructed a mod-ular dining facility for Fort Richardson, emergency living quarters forConocoPhillips, living quarters for theAlaska Department of Transportation atMontana Creek,an office complex for theUSDA at the Kenai Lake Work Center, and a30 by 86 metal building at Fort Wainwright,to name a few.

Q.What is the most challenging job thecompany has undertaken?

A.We have completed several challeng-ing projects including the following:

• Construction of a 50,000-square foot,414-bed,Delta Missile Defense camp in2002 with a very short construction time-line ;

• A 160-bed camp with a 100-bed addi-tion used as permanent living quarterswhich we designed,built, and installed forConocoPhillips at Alpine;

• A three-story 75-bed perma-nent living quarters for BP atNorthstar;

• Four modular post officesfor Wales,Lower Kalskag,Marshall, and Deering,Alaska.

Metal building projectsinclude:

• ConocoPhillips Alpine ware-house shop and incineratorbuildings 16,000 and 3,500square feet;

• Mapco Lynx cargo portfacility consisting of three build-ings totaling 100,000 square feet;and

• BP equipment shelters —five buildings totaling 14,000square feet.

Q.What are the biggest obsta-cles to completing work the

company undertakes?

A.Generally the biggest obstacles involveweather, particularly when undertakingNorth Slope projects. Set-up crews cansometimes be delayed for days due tostorms and cold temperatures.Anotherobstacle has to be obtaining specialty mate-rials in a timely fashion from out of state.Delays on materials can affect completiondates and extra time is often spent ensuringmaterials are here when needed.

Q.What do you see as future trends oropportunities for Arctic Structures?

A.Arctic Structures has grown immense-ly over the years and has great potential forfuture growth, particularly with the gas lineand other future oil production projects.

Q.Does Arctic Structures have ananniversary or other landmark eve com-ing up?

A.The founder of Arctic Structures,HarryPursell, celebrates his 80th birthday thisyear;he is proud to still be involved in thecompany he started over 40 years ago.

Ten years ago in Alaska & northernCanada’s oil patch…..

This section consists of partial reprints from Petroleum News Alaska(predecessor to Petroleum News).

Hess bails out

While state leaders are looking for ways to encourage oil and gas development inAlaska,Amerada Hess Corp.the state’s third largest leaseholder, has bailed out of Alaska.

With one massive stroke the oil and gas company gave up a colossal 278,000-plusacres of its remaining exploration and unit tracts on the North Slope.

The unprecedented transaction involves Amerada Hess’s share of 94 leases that areassigned to partner ARCO Alaska Inc.,and another 33 leases that have or will be turnedback to the state Department of natural Resources, according to lease documentsobtained by PNA.

Amerada Hess could not be reached for comment. However, DNR confirmed thetransaction, although paperwork formalizing the lease assignments and some of theterminations with the state isn’t expected to be filed for another week or so.

State documents indicate it could be the largest single lease transaction in state his-tory, even larger than the 141,000 acres Amerada Hess dumped at one time early lastyear.…

The assignments and terminations are believed to be Amerada Hess’ entire remain-ing acreage position in Alaska.…

Amerada Hess has never acknowledged publicly that it is leaving Alaska. With thelatest property transactions, however, there can be no doubt about the company’sintentions.

“They obviously took their look and, in the end, weren’t satisfied with what’s inAlaska,”said Bill Van Dyke, petroleum manager for the oil and gas division.

“This was obviously a corporate decision they started to make the year before lastwhen they decided they didn’t want to be involved in a development at Northstar,”said DNR Commissioner John Shively, a member of the state’s Oil and Gas PolicyCouncil tasked with identifying ways the state might attract oil and gas investment.…

The DNR commissioner “hopes” that the “message the state is sending out now” isdifferent from the one that contributed to Amerada Hess’decision to exit the state….

The C-Lock provides not only a secure locking device but are designed so that ice/mud build up will fallaway when the unlocked side of mat is lifted. This creates rotation in the locked end and breaks anydebris and allows the mats to come apart.

C-Lock Interlocking steel reinforced mats are 8 feet by 16 to 20 feet (or to your specs). Mats lock on foursides (ends with the C-Lock - sides with side slide), use grade 2+ spruce, are repairable in the field, havea 34,000 psf. Used for helicopter/storage pads, roads, warehouse floors, pipeline crossings, etc. Therotation of the C-Lock breaks ice/mud debris build up when lifted.

A. I have a five-year plan to expandHepworth Agency to include manufacturingand international marketing work. I am inthe process of developing the first phase ofthe plan that will provide future jobs forAlaskans.

Q.What is Hepworth Agency’s mainstrength, i.e. its edge over the competition?

A. I have more than 28 years experiencein marketing, sales, advertising and promo-tion in Alaska’s oil, gas, mining and construc-tion industries. I represented the AlaskaRailroad Corp.as the Freight Sales Managerand as the Assistant to the Vice President ofMarketing;also was Assistant to thePublisher of Petroleum News.

I have worked with Japanese andGerman trading and shipping companiesthroughout North America and Alaska. I alsoworked with Danish and Korean shippingcompanies as well as ship agents, custombrokers and stevedoring companies over-seeing the shipment of steel products toAlaska’s oil fields.

I am a published writer and have abroad background in public relations. I’vebeen responsible for large advertising/pro-

motion budgets and have designed, set upand manned booths at conferences andtrade shows throughout the U.S.andCanada.

My business travel has included all ofNorth America and Alaska (includingPrudhoe Bay,Unalaska and western Alaska.)I’ve ridden the Haul Road on a truck, climbed on drill rigs, stayed at constructioncamps and visited pipe-laying sites atPrudhoe Bay. I know the territory, which isabsolutely critical in such an undevelopedstate.

Q.What new markets, clients and/orprojects did Hepworth Agency attract inthe last year?

A. I introduced the two new mat compa-nies and a pipeline inspection company toAlaska in 2005.

Q.What is the most chal-lenging job your companyhas undertaken?

A.Gathering engineeringinformation to help in theredesign of a drill rig mat tomeet the heavier drill rigneeds in the Alaska market. This required learning andapplying engineering termi-nology and statistics so thatthe manufacturer was ableto use the information thatresulted in a new andimproved Alaskan drill rigmat.

Q.What do you see asyour company’s biggest challenge in thenext five years?

A.Launching a new manufacturing com-pany and marketing the products in Alaskaand Russia.

Q.What do you see as future trends oropportunities for Hepworth Agency fromevents such as long-term weather fluctua-tions?

A.Warm weather and slushy muddy ter-

rain are a nice combination for selling drillrig and road/platform mats.Arctic ice condi-tions require the use of drill rig and C-LockInterlocking mats to protect the environ-ment.

Q.What is Hepworth Agency’s safetyrecord?

A.So far Wadeen has managed to stay onher feet during icy weather which is a safe-ty record in itself; she also refrained fromcooking to avoid burning her office down.

Q.What is the most humorous storyfrom Hepworth Agency’s years in the busi-ness in Alaska?

A.As sales representative at AlaskaRailroad I convinced Arco Alaska to ship 60-foot line pipe from Anchorage to PrudhoeBay during breakup. This required transfer-ring loads at Hilltop on the Haul Road and Ithought it strange the truckers (their man-agers were my two best trucking buddies)didn’t mingle in the coffee shop.At dinner Ireceived word the North Slope contractorrefused to unload the trucks.Without realiz-ing it I had put together a deal between aunion and non-union trucking companyand no one had mentioned the fact — wejust had a job to do. (By the way, theyunloaded those trucks.)

Q.How can people get in touch withyou?

A.My contact information is:HepworthAgency, 612 E.3rd Avenue, Anchorage, AK99501, telephone:907-272-5766, fax:907-274-5766, and email: [email protected].

Mapco’s Birkinshaw switches tofly-fishing, swimming outdoors

By AMY SPITTLERPetroleum Directory

Dick Birkinshaw was an Alaska resi-dent for 22 years. His hands-on experi-ence in the oil and gas industry in thestate began with his work for MapcoExpress, as its divi-sion manager.

While in AlaskaBirkinshaw was amember of thePetroleum Club, adirector for theResourceDevelopmentCouncil (RDC) andpresident ofAnchorageDowntown Rotary.

He says he and his wife miss “manythings” about living in Alaska, theirfriends who still live in the state at thetop of their list.

They also miss visits to the GlacierBrew House, the cross-country skiingtrails, fishing trips, traveling to Homer inthe summer, and the Fur Rondy season. The list goes “on and on,” Birkinshaw

says.His most memorable experience in

the industry was the years of hard workthat went into developing “a successfulretail gasoline and convenience storechain from the ground up.”

Currently, Birkinshaw and his wife areliving in Medford Oregon, which is closerto their children and grandchildren. Inhis words, they are enjoying “family time.”

Birkinshaw is retired now, but he stillkeeps busy as a local Rotarian and as aSun Oaks HOA board member.

He also likes to get in a regular gameof duplicate bridge with friends, andmakes a point to travel, especially duringcollege football season to watch thegames of his alma mater, the University ofOregon.

Birkinshaw is without a doubt one ofthe country’s most loyal Duck fans, goingas far as organizing charter flights for heand his friends, so that they can attendgames.

His outdoor activities have changedslightly since moving to Oregon, and nowinclude fly-fishing, swimming outdoorsand hiking. Most importantly, he saysright now he’s “just having fun.”

Simmons growing grapes in southern OregonBy AMY SPITTLERPetroleum Directory

For those of you who wonder whatSteve Simmons is up to these days, he’s avineyard owner in southern Oregon, commuting periodically to Baku,Azerbaijan and Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Russiaas a consultant for MI Swaco.

Steve moved to Anchorage in 1972,the day after his high school graduation, and stayed in the state for almost 28years.

Initially he spent several years work-ing in Anchorage and on the North Slopewithout “concerning myself with acareer,” as he put it.

In 1977 “three pioneers of the Alaskaoil service industry” at a company calledDrilling Supply and Rental offered him a

chance at something better. (Alaska, Stevesaid, very recently lost one of those pio-neers in the person of Glyn Scales.)

The company was small in 1977, butthe employee roster grew by 100 percentthe following year when “one of the mostinfluential people in my life joined mefor what became a long haul building abusiness,” Steve said, making reference tolong-time friend Bruce Spittler.

Eventually the company changed itsname to DSR Companies and grew biggerthan a two-man operation.

In 1997, a Houston based global ser-vice company acquired DSR, and itbecame part of MI-Swaco.

Steve was a very early board memberof the Alaska Support Industry Alliance inAlaska, when it was called ASIA. He is stilla member of the Society ofPetroleum Engineers, and wasan active user of and eventualpresident of the PetroleumClub of Anchorage.

Steve and his wife Christy, who have been married 28years, say they both miss thefriendships they had with somany people in Anchorage.“We particularly miss theevents at the Petroleum Cluband the spontaneous trips tothe Southside Bistro for a sum-mer salad and a glass of wine,”they wrote Petroleum News.

They said they made manygood memories in Alaska, which is where they met.

At DSR Steve said he had“mostly highs and a few lows”that were memorable. Herecalls celebrating at theSpenard post office when thecompany received enoughmoney in the mail to makepayroll. “I can also rememberworking to meet some dead-lines for delivery of equip-ment, when we ate cold pizzaat consecutive sunrises, and wewere still painting things as

they were being shipped out of theyard.”

Today, he and Christy are growingwine grapes and making (a little wine) inOregon.

“Our operation is called Misty Oaks

Vineyard. To support this venturethrough its early stages, my wife and Iboth work. Christy commutes toRoseburg and is a controller for a privatemedical firm, and I commute to Baku,Azerbaijan and Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Russia

as an operations consultant forMI Swaco,” Steve said.

Despite his busy internationalschedule Steve still likes to playgolf and can honestly say hetakes great pleasure just workingat establishing the vineyard.

Steve has some advice for hisfriends in Alaska:“Drink winesfrom southern Oregon. MistyOaks is one of many good onesthat can be found here. Seriouslythough, here is an observation. After traveling around the east-ern hemisphere for the last fouror five years, I would just like tosay; we really do live in a greatcountry and we ought to givethanks every day for the lifestylewe enjoy here.”

Steve wants everyone toknow that the vineyard’s web-site will be up soon. For thetime being,“We would love tocorrespond with any of ourAlaska friends using our e-mailaddress [email protected].”

Explorationand early development of offshore Sakhalin Island is proving that the area contains a huge amount ofrecoverable oil. Several Alaska companies have had operations there since the 1990s. Steve says he fre-quently runs into Alaskans and former Alaskans there.

It is a concrete drillingisland that had a first life in the Beaufort Sea in Alaska and has now under-gone remodeling and upgrading to work offshore of Sakhalin Island. “WhenI went aboard it in Ulsan, Korea it was like coming home. Many of the crewonboard had worked in Alaska,” Simmons reported.

A.We have three branches and a fabrica-tion facility. We opened Totem Rentals inWasilla last May.We also opened the fabrica-tion plant last year and we plan on dou-bling the size of our fabrication buildingthis spring.

Our rental business has been growing

by leaps and bounds in the Matanuska andSusitna valleys during the last several years. We had a great many customers asking usto put a store in the valley. Since we reallyhad too much inventory for our existingfacilities, expansion to this area was a per-fect fit. This has turned out to be a verygood move with better service for ourmore northern customers and anotherplace to store inventory.

The fabrication facility was also cus-tomer driven, as we could not really keepup with demand for our current products. We also found that we had to refuse to dothings we were capable of doing becauseof facility and personnel constraints. This isworking out well enough that the buildingwe just got going last year is being doubledthis spring.

A.Our new market is mainly providingbetter service to the Palmer/Wasilla area

through our new branch in the middle oftown at Susitna and Knik Goose Bay Road.We have also found market expansionopportunities by exporting products andservices to both Russia and South Korea.Part of our expansion was generated byadditional large pending orders from theSouth Korean Army and the Russian oilfields.

Q.What is the most challenging job thecompany has undertaken?

A. It seems every job we do has its ownchallenges and very rarely is it not a “rushjob.”

Q.What do you see as your company’sbiggest challenge in the next five years?

A.Managing growth and keeping ourcore group of employees happy is thebiggest challenge.

Q.What do you see as future trends oropportunities for Totem Equipment &Supply from events such as long-termweather fluctuations?

A.We expect to be keeping Alaskanstoasty warm for many years to come. And,with all the potential of the gas pipeline,ANWR, the Knik Arm crossing, relativelyhigh gold and mineral prices, and increasedtourism, the future looks especially bright.Alaska has a great future if things are doneproperly.

Pad, pipelines complete at CD3 According to operator ConocoPhillips, pipeline and drill site

construction was completed this winter at Alpine satellite FiordCD3. Production is expected to start later this year. There are noroads to Fiord (nor will there be), so in January temporary iceroads were constructed to move construction equipment, facili-ties, a drilling rig and drilling supplies to the site.

Similar construction activities were going on at another Alpinesatellite, Nanuq CD4.The total investment in the two satelliteswas about $500 million.

During the past two winter seasons 600 people worked onconstruction at Fiord and Nanuq each year.

Drilling and construction contractors included Doyon Drilling(main drilling contractor), M-I Swaco (drilling fluids and wastemanagement), Sperry Drilling Services (directional drilling andlogging), Schlumberger (cementing and pumping),Arctic SlopeEnergy Services (pipelines), Swalling Construction (bridges),Nanuq and Peak Oilfield Services (ice roads), ConamConstruction (facilities),VECO Alaska (communication andpower), and VECO Engineering (engineering).

When asked what effect a new state petroleum production taxmight have on satellite developments such as Fiord,ConocoPhillips declined to comment but Alliance manager PaulLaird said “any tax increase makes all Alaskan investments lessattractive and less likely to attract capital. That’s even true of theoriginal PPT negotiated between the administration and the threemajor North Slope producers which amounts to a doubling ofcurrent severance taxes and roughly a $1 billion annual taxincrease on the industry at current price and production levels.”
