Petrified Forest At Home Activity Who’s tracks are those? There are a lot of animals living in Petrified Forest but you may not see all of them in person when you visit. The more secretive animals like bobcats and porcupine are a rare sight but you may still see evidence of their activity by the foot(paw)prints they leave behind. The following activity can help you learn to recognize the footprints made by several animals that live in northern Arizona and the park. Step 1: Read the animal descriptions to the right and look at their pictures on the next page. Step 2: Print out the second page of this activity and draw a line from the animal picture to the track you think it left behind. The answer key is up-side down on the bottom of the page. Cottontail Rabbit: I have four legs and long ears. I hop around looking for grass or other yummy plants to eat. My back feet are bigger than my front feet and my tail looks like a little white cotton ball. Bobcat: I am a great hunter and I can blend in to the land because of the color of my fur. I have long legs and big paws and can weigh up to 30 pounds. My face is wide with longer fur on my cheeks and ears. Porcupine: I am a big rodent that likes living in trees and chewing on the bark with my big orange teeth. I am very shy but I like to be more active at night. I protect myself with large spikes called quills that are made out of keratin just like your fingernails. Coyote: I am related to dogs and I like howling and making lots of noise with my friends. I am a hunter but I will eat other things that I find including fruits and vegetables. My home is called a den. Pronghorn: I am often called an antelope because I look like one but I am really a different animal. I run very fast and like to eat lots of plants. I break the rule of horns and antlers and have a horn that I regrow every year. Raven: I look like a crow but I am much bigger. I eat bugs and other meat that hunting animals leave behind. I find one mate and stick with them for life. I have a vocabulary of over 200 sounds.
