8 | 2014 ANNUAL REPORT

Mr Hopkins requested that the rear car park be marked out.

Mr Everson remarked that Chorus had left a lot of equipment behind which needs to be removed.

Mr Green asked Mr Blandford for an update on the WRFU competition review. Mr Blandford gave a brief over view of the proposed changes. A decision is still to be made by clubs on whether to retain the status quo or to change the competition.

Mr Ross said he was concerned about player stock with other clubs poaching players and clubs paying players to play for them.

Mr Walker said he wanted the new gear contract with Samarai ripped up as the out going Management Committee should not be making decisions that impact on the Club for the next three years. He felt such decisions should be left to an incoming committee to decide.

Mr Ross agreed and said there was no commercial gain in sponsoring the club and that the club should look after Mr Leslie.

Mr Tanner said that the timing of the Annual General Meeting should be reviewed so that an incoming committee is appointed earlier and would make appointments and plans for the next season rather than inherit decisions put in place by the out-going committee which they cannot change and have to work with.

Mr Linkhorn responded that Mr Leslie had no issue with Samurai being appointed and that Samurai gives the club a good rebate. The members of the incoming committee were entitled to make their own decisions in the coming year.

Mr McCormick advised that the Management Committee would discuss these matters further.

There being no further business Mr Whittington thanked the members for their attendance and declared the meeting closed at 8.45pm.

The Management Committee held 10 meetings between the 2013 AGM and 6 October 2014. Member’s attendance is recorded below.

THE CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

IntroductionOn behalf of the 2014 Management Committee it is my pleasure to present this report as Chair-man of the finest Rugby Club in New Zealand.

We can honestly say that the running of our club did not get any easier this year, however combining our brand of club spirit and culture with capable people and club members all these factors assisted to make our club the finest.

As per recent years this report will cover the four areas of the Management Scoreboard, these being 1.Governance and Administration, 2. Infrastructure, 3. Our Teams and 4. Recruitment and Retention.

1. Governance and AdministrationThe Management Committee has continued to work within the club’s constitution, as report-ed in the last annual report the loss of the daily presence of Brian Simmons in 2013 meant a redistribution of tasks previously handled by Brian. We thank Dan Thompson who operates the gymnasium at the club for taking over the operating of the day to day administration tasks to ensure the smooth running of facilities hires and day to day operation of the club.

The early part of the year we had an enormous deviation from our normal season created by the proposal to build a boutique stadium at the Petone Rec. This proposal would have resulted in the loss of a number of playing fields for both the rugby and cricket clubs. An enormous amount of energy was soaked up by our club, its members and the local community to ensure submissions against the proposal were made. These submissions were successful and the Hutt City Council has now committed funding for Petone Sportsville to establish the exact require-ments of the local sporting community, this should result in development of a successful plan for all Petone sports clubs and future generations to continue to enjoy the open spaces and excellent sports grounds at the Petone Rec.

Thanks to Malcolm Larsen for his work in the Treasurers role, Malcolm has indicated he wishes to step aside from this role at the AGM and we thank him for the work he has done on behalf of the club for a number of years. Again, the financial budget has been reviewed month by month and despite the tough times we remain in a reasonable financial position, the financial report is displayed elsewhere in the Annual Report. The support of sponsors, suppliers and trusts is again very much appreciated. We have welcomed the former junior section treasurer Tammy Ferreira onto the finance committee in the latter part of this season and she has indicated she is prepared to stand for the Treasurer’s role at the AGM.

Membership Secretary Annie Randal has again handled this role ensuring we meet NZRU and WRFU requirements. The secretariat requirements of the club have again been under the con-trol of Jenny Gray whose dedication to the role is amazing, to her a very large thank you. Thank you also to our Deputy Chairman Murray Blandford for the sterling work he has undertaken as

Page 10: PETONE RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB (INCORPORATED) · PETONE RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB (INCORPORATED) Office Bearers 2014 Patron: President: ... investigated by the WRFU and until the outcome of

10 | 2014 ANNUAL REPORT

our delegate to the WRFU, Murray is stepping down at the AGM from both the club committee and his WRFU delegate duties.

2. Infrastructure The House area this year has been under the dual-control of Chris Molenaar and Zinny McCor-mick, thanks to Chris for the hours he has put into the efficient running of our club bar and Zinny for the administration hours he has put in.Our appreciation goes to DB Breweries for their support which continues to produce a sound financial result for the club. This sound result would not be possible without the voluntary Bar Teams who have been very well led this season by Chris Molenaar. After-match and various other functions held during the year (it’s not only used in the rugby season), were all covered, but help is needed especially for more Bar-managers and Bar Teams if you can spare some time to assist the club within this area then let us know.

The use of the clubs facilities by outside organisations and individuals continues to increase with the accompanying financial benefit, this along with our long time tenant Tai Poutini Polytechnic and the recently introduced Fitness Gym catering to outside users, ensures the clubrooms are always busy.

The club shop has been open every Friday during the season, the range of stock was reduced to the more popular fast moving items and by the AGM our long awaited online Club shop will be up and running which will enable purchases to be made at anytime with delivery to your door.

The need for new range of volunteers cannot be stressed enough, the efforts of the Dad’s Army Group, Marie and Les Everson, Ross Plunkett, Gary Lewis, Wayne Smith all in their various roles are invaluable, once again a very big thank you to you all.

There has been no progress on a planned kitchen re-development due to planned grant’s fund-ing for the project not forthcoming; we will continue to seek the necessary funding.

The club has joined Petone Sportsville and Paul Coles has been appointed to their board, the Management Committee has been in discussion with them regarding establishing the exact requirements of the local sporting community in the Petone area.

The clubs website and Facebook page continue to be a great ways of keeping our club’s profile to the fore and it is very well lead by Gary Lewis and Wayne Smith, they continue to seek fur-ther help by way of articles or web development by anyone who is interested.

Our loyal group of Sponsors has again supported the club, they are listed elsewhere within this report, we ask all members to support them in any way that you can. To date we have not been successful in finding a naming rights sponsor to replace our former sponsor and a sub group of the Management Committee under the guidance of John Roper is currently working through a number of enhancements to the options for sponsorship and funding for 2015.

Special mention must be made of Winstone Aggregates for their continued support and spon-sorship of our Under 21 Grade teams.

3. Rugby - Our TeamsIt is what we are all about and this booklet contains our Club Captain Mike Woollett’s report as well as the various team’s reports, please take time to read them all.

The Senior 1’s and the Senior 3’s have both enjoyed success with WRFU championships this year and while the overall results are only slightly better than the previous season, the general spirit shown by the majority of players, coaches and team management is something to be proud of, all the teams tried hard and with a little luck the results could have been improved even more.

To Mike Woollett, a huge thank you, and to all the coaches, strapper’s, medic’s and team man-agers the time that you give to our young people is just tremendous, we look forward to your continued support in 2015.

The Ken Gray Academy under the leadership of Dion Ross in conjunction with our Rugby De-velopment Officer, Darren Larsen have worked hard to develop both our existing players and recruit and develop a large number of these younger players who have stepped up and played at a high level this season. This is reflected in the number of our players playing in Regional and WRFU representative teams at the conclusion of the club season. We look forward to the hard work being put in by this team coming to further fruition in 2015.

4. Recruitment and RetentionAs in previous seasons, our objective remains to sustain and or increase our team numbers and grow the number of registered players and coaches. We were unable to field an Under 85kg this season and a number of club members are working extremely hard to enable us to field a team in 2015. Our Presidents Grade team also struggled for numbers this year and was forced to withdraw as a team later in the season when they simply ran out of players. Gordon Hirtzel has done an excellent job over a number of years with this team, it is now perhaps time for the next generation of players to step up to assist to run this team.

The Konnect Blue programme was introduced at the end of last season with the aim of building on the link between the current Junior section players throughout their secondary school years and to assist in creating a pathway back to rejoining the club. This programme is a joint venture between the Junior Section and our Rugby Development Officer Darren (Lardy) Larsen. This season for the first time at the end of the 2014 Secondary School’s season a team of players came back to pull on their Petone jerseys again and successfully play two games as an Under 14 team against two Wairarapa Colleges.

The Rugby Development Officers role continues to play a significant part in achieving the club’s objectives of success both on and off the field and to Lardy thank you for the time and effort you have given, the payback is already starting to show and will continue to grow in the new season.

The funding model for this role has changed significantly and the committee has identified finding the funding to continue this role is our highest priority.

12 | 2014 ANNUAL REPORT

The Junior Section with Brad Diamond as Convenor has had another year of growth in the intro-duction of young people to our game. Our thanks Brad, the Junior Committee and Coaches for the time they give to developing our future players.

The Petone Old Farts Fraternity remains a tremendous way of retaining a link to our former players and Ross Plunkett and John Dobson are to be thanked for arranging the mid-year func-tion. To all our Volunteers, a huge thank you bring a new friend with you next year; it is a great way of meeting new people.

A big thank you to our President John Roper, for his support to the committee, his after-match speeches have been a highlight along with his common sense approach and down to earth sensible rugby views.

Finally as I am stepping down from the Management Committee this year I wish our club and the incoming Management Committee every success for the future.

Craig (Gus) McMillan1 October 2014

CLUB CAPTAIN’S REPORT

When accepting the role of Club Captain I wasn’t sure what condition the rugby side of the club was in and whilst looking forward to the role it was not without a little trepidation.

However, what I found was a hard working core of people and an especially hard working CCO who all had the best interests of the club at heart.

All the planning for this season was in place and whilst there was the day to day issues of running ‘’rugby’’ all the hard work had been done by Lardy. Our main issue was finding some people to fill coaching positions which thankfully we managed just before the season was due to start.

On that note I would like to thank all our coaches, managers and support staff of all the teams for all their work during the season. Most people do not realise the time and effort that goes in to these roles. You all have my admiration for being brave enough to put your heads above the parapet and take these roles on.

My thanks also goes to the Management Committee for all the hard work that you do. I found the robust discussions around the Committee table to be both stimulating and eye-opening. It also encourages me that the club has good people working for a common goal and whilst we may not all agree with all the decisions made at least we are prepared to discuss, implement or discard and move on.

I would like to thank all the Club sponsors who support us over the course of the season. In an increasingly difficult environment your support is immense and I encourage you to continue your support for as long as possible. If there is anything we can help you with please let us know.

I thank the players, our most important asset, for their efforts over the season. The Club is judged on how our teams perform on the field and it was very heartening to see the progress made this season across all teams. Congratulations to our Senior 1 and ‘Brotherhood’ teams who both collected Championships this season. It was great to see the camaraderie that developed through the players this season and this is a strong indicator that we are doing things right and are heading in the right direction as a club - please encourage your team mates and any friends or new players to come on board for the 2015 season. We need to keep working hard and keep moving forward as we are only part way down the path to more success at all levels and you the players are the major component in this.

Thanks to all our supporters who get out there every week and follow our teams around the playing fields of Wellington. It’s not an easy task in a biting cold southerly and howling rain but you would be surprised how much the players appreciate it.

28 | 2014 ANNUAL REPORT

I would also like to thank my family for their support and encouragement which allows me to be fully involved in this great game.

I feel that as a club we have turned the corner in a rugby sense and that there is a promise of better things to come. That will only happen if we all keep working hard in all spheres of the club. Remember, ask not what your club can do for you but what you can do for your club.

CheersMike Woollett

PREMIER TEAM Coaches: Peter Green, Rodney So’olalo Manager: Grant Wall

Over half the team this year were 20 years old or under. Six of these players had not played Premier Rugby before - challenges ahead!

Rodney & I identified early the lack of fitness & skills with some players. After consultation with Lardy, he implemented a fitness and conditioning program to overcome these issues.

We started the season with a win over Wellington Club who were back in Premier Grade 28/8. This followed a loss to OBU which highlighted the need to regroup and focus on the upcoming McBain shield against Hutt.

The McBain shield was won 20/19. This started the belief in ourselves as a team.

Rodney & I then targeted Tawa. Resulting in Tawa being beaten at home for the first time in 2 seasons 31/27. So now we were starting to grow, ending the Swindale Shield in third place.

Starting the Jubilee Cup round we beat MSP quite convincingly. Then injuries started to hit us in key positions, with us only managing to get two wins in the second round.

I would like to thank Rodney for this contribution to the team. He worked tirelessly to help the players reach their full potential. We shared the same desire for the team, and have built a fantastic foundation to be used going forward.

Our Manager Grant Wall gave 100% making our coaching jobs so much easier.

To Grant and the rest of our management team Ezra, Buster, Nigel and Alex. A special thanks from Rodney and I, you are good people and a pleasure to have on our team.

Thanks Lardy for all your input this season and making yourself available to us. Also thanks to Dion and the B team for their support during the season.

Players leadership group recognition: Josh Hrstich, Eugene Smith, Mateaki Kafatolu, JK, Nick Grigg, & Cam Incledon. Thanks for your input and being good people.

We wish Sam McNicoll and Riki Flutey a quick recovery from their injuries.

Finally to our supporters and parents who supported us week in and week out, thank you very much!

Pre-SeasonStarted positively with the introduction of a lot of new young talent to the club; James Bowen (GBH)Jordan-Glen Bradbrook (Scots College)Michael McDonald (GBH), Matt McCray (Wairarapa College) Sonny Oloapu (Naenae College)We were always going to have a quality side when adding these guys to the current talent pool at the club. We feel that improvements could be made in finding better calibre teams to play pre-season matches with. We were short of game time leading into the season and our final hit out against Martinborough was not what we were hoping for as the calibre of skill and intensity was not there.

Season Start Boys vs Men

– Avalon cleaned us up and with another loss a week later. To respond to this the coaching staff made changes to our game plan and upped the intensity at trainings.

– A good win over OBU and a poor performances against Para Plim and Hutt still kept us in the hunt for Hardham cup rugby. After the Hutt game we did a lot of individual work around our inside backs and loose forward trio as we had been exposed by Hutt.

– The Oriental Rongotai game was our final game of the first round which saw us draw that game and lose our chance of playing Hardham Cup Rugby.

Second Round The second round started well but we were brought back to earth with a thump as Poneke played their normal over aggressive style which caught both players and coaches napping. As a result we modified our coaching style with the introduction of tougher training sessions which focused on:- Basic ball skills- Intensity around the ruck- Kicking out of Red zone- Focus on playing finals rugby

Before finals rugby we had to play Hutt again so this was an opportunity to see if our boys had absorbed everything from our trainings. The answer to that was yes they had.

We were also lucky to get players like JR Ross, Taylor Henry, Willie Tufui, Cam Ross, Jared Hrstich and Cam Incledon. This meant an injection of quality youth and the experience of Cam Incledon which had a calming effect on our backline.

Semi finalLocked horns with our old foe over the bridge again and came out on top with a hard fought win.

FinalPoneke at the Rec. Once again it was a chance to find out if our boys had absorbed what we had tried to teach them and the answer to that question was yes again.Bowen was outstanding at the collusion, JR was confrontational and our front row that got beat up earlier in the season came out on top.

Our backline functioned well but were unable to capitalize on early breaks by Tufui. Taylor Henry who had been our prolific point’s scorer all year injured his kicking foot during the week leading up to the final so it was left to JG Bradbrook to kick the winning goal from 40m out on the touchline with 4 minutes remaining. We then had to go into survival mode as Poneke attacked our line for the next 4 minutes; we survived to win the Ed Chaney.

34 | 2014 ANNUAL REPORT

SummaryIn summary a great season of rugby was had because players were keen to learn, management was willing to work and coaches were able to adapt. Winning a championship was our goal from day one and we all worked hard to achieve that goal together.

Looking forward to next year, improvements can be made during the pre-season training period. Games need to be organised against other high calibre teams. We also need to look at the successful retention and development of our young talent pool which will see our club win more championships from under 21’s to Premier Rugby.

CongratulationsWe would like to congratulate Sio (our captain) for picking up his 100th game for Petone Premiers and for the warrior leadership that he and Jarrod Hrstich demonstrated for 2014.Special mention and Thanks to Tui Hunt for his contribution to Petone Rugby.

We would also like to congratulate our 3 National winning under 19 Wellington players

JR Ross, Willie Tufui and Jordan-Glen Bradbrook.

Congratulations to Anthony Ellis for making the Wellington Maoris and being a member of the inaugural Winning Capital Championship team.

Congratulations to Marcus Roil for making the Wellington Development Team.

Thank you to Mike Woollett for his guidance and leadership during the 2014 season.

Finally thanks to all our players, management and supporters for 2014

SENIOR 2ND TEAM

Coaches: Matthew Pupuke, Ben Martin, Dane HurleyManager: George Sione

The Petone Senior 2nd rugby team opened their 2014 season account with a first up win over perennial battlers, Wests Roosters (23- nil) in the first round of the National Mutual Cup. This was followed with a hard fought 14- all draw with bitter rivals, HOBM on a rain-soaked afternoon at Petone Rec. number 2. The following weekend we achieved another hard fought home win, again on our favoured home ground against Old Boys University (23 – 16).

The double header Easter weekend saw us experience our first losses of the season versus Norths (35 -29) and Wellington (26-19) respectively.

Player defections, injuries and player retirement also conspired to lead us to our third straight loss, away to Poneke (40- 7). We managed to halt our losing streak by winning our next away matches, to Marist St. Pats (25 – 16), Stokes Valley (12-5) and an emphatic home win versus Upper Hutt (60 – 5) before away losses to Avalon (37 -17) and Johnsonville (14 – 11) ended our 2014 National Mutual Cup campaign with a credible mid table placing.

The “business” competition of the WRFU Senior 2nd grade – the HD Morgan Cup kicked off on 7 June and again we started strong, with a first up home win over Marist St. Pats (23 -8).

Despite bonus point wins over Stokes Valley (38-24) and Upper Hutt (25 -24), and a win by default over Norths; losses to HOBM (15 -13) Old Boys University (19 -12) and Johnsonville (39 -24) threatened to curtail our goal of reaching the semi finals for a second successive season.

Our hopes rested on the result of our last regular season match, a must win home game versus third placed Avalon. This would be our match of the season, one for the highlight reel.

We took an early 7 – nil lead amid teeming rain and in a quagmire that our favoured ground of Petone Rec. 2 had turned into. It was an arm wrestle of a match, both sides adapting as best they could to wet weather rugby. Fortunately for us, we maintained our discipline more than Avalon and were always on the front foot, both in attack and in defence.

Believing is the first step to achieving and we had buckets of self belief in the mud to come away with the win (10 -3). Our resolute doggedly defence in atrocious conditions restricting our opponents to a single penalty kick.

Sadly, we couldn’t replicate our heroic efforts in our semi-final, going down to Old Boys University (44 -22). Playing semi-final rugby had always been our goal (any progression on this goal would’ve been a bonus), and this was how we measured the success of our season, finishing in third place for the HD Morgan Memorial Cup competition.

RESERVE GRADE TEAM

Coach: Mark Masina Manager: Neville MasinaThe 2014 Brotherhood season was a season of two halves.

Looking forward from the successful 2013 season, the prospect of defending the JDR Cup and Johnsonville Continuum cup was an exciting one. The season almost failed to get off the ground when the union couldn’t put a Senior 3rd grade together. However, after combining this grade and half of the Reserve grade, the season was underway.

With only half the players and management returning from a jubilant 2013 season, the challenge was on early to put a team together. Once the word got out that the team was still alive and keen there were a lot of fresh young faces willing to don the Petone jersey.

Brotherhood seniors this year included Bruce Taumaoe, Star Leaupepe, Thomas Maka, Joe Makisi (Captain), Solia Tolai, Pat Muaau, John Tafili, Nev Masina, Sam Masina, Steve Makisi and Allan Seu. We were also very lucky to have returning this year Fa’alau Taumaoe, Willy Masina, Alan Tetavano, Bernie Taulealo and Afele Tolai.

The first year Brotherhood players this year were Luke Taylor, Hone Savage, Alex Tapuai, Jacob Hughes, Shaun Broughton and Donald Leafa.

Having a good mix of Brotherhood stalwarts and new players being lead by Captain Joe Makisi the team was feeling good heading into the first round. While fitness has never been at its best early in the season, the Brother’s were looking good opening up the season with a solid 34-24 win over one of the 3 OBU teams in the grade The Righteous Brothers.

Wins were coming thick and fast and the first round was looking like ours to lose. While it was good having the wins coming our way, we knew we had a couple of big guns to play with two Poneke teams. Poneke Ruffnuts who have been a main stay in the Senior 3rd and Reserve grade and the Poneke Rats who were from the Senior 2nd grade were the two teams we were looking to for massive games.

They did not disappoint. Firstly the Rats who boasted a very well drilled team and had some big boys in their squad. This was a very tough game, the most physical game to date. We felt like we were fighting to get in the game and we were behind on the scoreboard throughout. CHARACTER, this was the first chance for the brothers to show what we were made of. We managed to take the lead in the dying minutes through a penalty and a try then had to fight to hold on. Job one done winning 20-14.

Job two, the Ruffnuts. The Ruffnuts are one of the most well known teams in Wellington across any grade. It was teams like theirs that paved the way for family teams like ours so it felt somewhat like student VS teacher. With a lot of senior players turning out for the Ruffnuts and some Poneke legends running also it was going to be a challenging game. Both forward packs

Page 24: PETONE RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB (INCORPORATED) · PETONE RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB (INCORPORATED) Office Bearers 2014 Patron: President: ... investigated by the WRFU and until the outcome of

38 | 2014 ANNUAL REPORT

were enormous, Ruffnuts most likely tipping the scales in their favour. This made for some big impacts and collisions throughout the game. CHARACTER that word again, and again it was needed in this game.

Once obtaining the lead, the Brothers were required to defend for their lives in the last 15 minutes. While it was a tough game and there were some very sore bodies, this felt like a very good and well earned win 37-27.

With a convincing win 62-0 in the last game of the round against Johnsonville the Brotherhood had gone through the first round undefeated and back to back JDR cup champions.

The second round was a mixed bag of victories and a few of close loses. One loss came against a stronger Ruffnuts side at home losing 34-19 on Petone Rec. They were too big and powerful for us and we didn’t adjust our game plan to what was happening. Another tough loss was to the much improved OBU Therapists. The Therapists shot out to a big half time lead and the Brothers were force to try and catch up. Throwing everything at the Therapists we went down 31-32 in a heart breaking finish.

The last loss of the round came in the final game. The unknown entity, the Upper Hutt J8’s. Another team that had been around a long time, this was a very fit and structured team. It was an even contest but the Brothers went down 19 – 22.

Semi final weekend and it would again be against the Upper Hutt J8’s. Now that we have had a look at them we felt comfortable we could conjure up the right game plan to get the win. Upper Hutt started well looking quick around the park and forcing us to catch up.

The difference between the two sides on the day is one team took their opportunities and the other didn’t. Unfortunately it was us that didn’t. We squandered a couple of sure tries and what had been working for us all season long suddenly wasn’t enough. Upper Hutt won that semi deservedly 6 – 18.

While this wasn’t the desired result we wanted for the Brothers it was still a good season and we still picked up some silverware for the cabinet. We still created good memories and made some new friendships along the way.

There was many a highlight throughout the season with the off-field highlights the usual court session and the Annual Brotherhood party drew in a massive crowd this year. But it was the individual personalities that made the team what it was this year.

It’s time to thank a few people for their input this year and without them our team would not function as smoothly as it does.

Hone Savage had a big first year converting from league as did former eagle Shaun Broughton. Senior member Solia Tolai was solid from 6 and worked well with his loosie team Thomas Maka and Bernie Taulealo. The Kardashians (Masina’s) were consistent all year although somewhat injury plagued.

Firstly to Fa’alau Taumaoe who on top of playing and steering the team around the park cam on to help coach the backs.

Nev Masina for his usual contribution in the management of the team.

Mateaki Kafatolu for his input and time he offered on our training nights.

COLTS WHITE TEAM

Coaches: Jason Reid and Ryan Piper Manager: Kris Pervan

Changing habits, development, and improving skills were highlights for the under-20s 2014 season of rugby. We started the season in division 3, and as in 2013 became part of a merged division in the second round (comprised of division 2 and 3 teams). There was plenty of talent across the under-20s grade, and each game we played we took as a serious challenge. We didn’t make the semi finals in either round but maintained our team commitment; improved individually and collectively as a team; and ended the season as much better players.

This year, most of the team knew one another in some way – and the guys even encouraged their friends to come down and play for the team. This made for a great team environment and the boys really enjoyed training together – with usual training attendance of around 15 guys on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Our aim this year was to profile players and help them to develop. In this respect, we challenged individuals to try playing in different positions; and to test their skills, and ‘combinations’ in the forwards and backs.

First round challenges:This set the scene for our first round, where the focus for training and game play was to improve ball skills, technique (scrummaging and lineouts), and to introduce key Petone ‘calls’ along with a set team game plan – the overall goal being to play together, rather than individually. This took some of the boys some time to get the hang of, so remained a theme of focus throughout the year.

That said, the team was committed to learning new skills, and the boys pulled together as a team to deliver some fantastic rugby.

In terms of game results - to be blunt, it got worse before it got better. Our first three games were quite tight, and ended up as unfortunate losses against Rahui (24 to 19), Upper Hutt (37 to 14), and finally OBU (38 to 34). Our greatest challenge was a lack of time together as a team (having only met before our first game), so the guys initially played very individually which enabled our opposition to leverage off our errors and miscommunication.

Our first moment of team brilliance emerged in our fourth game against Upper Hutt, which we won 22 to 12. The most fantastic aspect of this game was that we played as a unit, and worked together for the entire game – our defence was ‘on’ and we were in the faces off the opposition on attack.

Unfortunately, this game was followed by a loss to Upper Hutt (27 to 20), but this score did not reflect the action on the field, and our team was unlucky to lose the game.

42 | 2014 ANNUAL REPORT

Second round highlights: In the second round, following the merging of division 2 and 3, we kicked off the season strongly but struggled to field a full team on a number of weekends due to injury and school holidays.

In our first match for the round, we faced division 2 team, Avalon; and although we played well, we ended the game losing 56 to 31. Our strong play continued into our next two games where we marginally lost to OBU (23 to 22) and to Johnsonville (26 to 18) – we unfortunately suffered a number of injuries in the backline in the latter game and were unlucky not to win! In part, the boys were let down by their execution of set play.

Still suffering from injuries across our squad, we fought hard in our next four games losing against Kapiti (36 to 22) and Rahui (22 to 20); drawing with Tawa (20 all) but unfortunately lost our last game to Upper Hutt (32 to 7). This was quite a challenging and slightly disheartening time for the team, but we pulled together and put in the extra yards.

Coaches highlights: This year despite the results, we saw a lot of growth in individuals within the team. Team unity was also a big part of the year, with high turnout at training through out the season. A feature of games was good communication, and true Petone style (commitment, intensity, courage). Spectators commented on the fantastic workrate from the entire team. We were proud of the guys in each of these games, and happy that the skills and tools that we’d drilled into them during the season had an obvious positive influence in parts of their game.

We’re sure that the boys will never forget the ‘aerobic’, warm-up, or “6-4-2’s”; and that they boys will definitely miss the gridiron, Fijian touch, and games that were a feature of Friday night training.

We send a special thanks out to Zane Baker (captain), Matt Thomas (vice captain), and Dylan Manuel (vice captain) for being strong leaders throughout the entire season for the team.

To the rest of the team, we want to acknowledge all the hard work, heart, and commitment that you’ve individually and collectively put into the 2014 season. We hope that you’re proud of your efforts, and that you enjoyed being part of the 2014 under-20s team as much as we did. We look forward to hearing of your progress in rugby in future years – as you turn your minds to becoming competitive and serious senior rugby players. Without further ado, well done to our team:

Front-rowers: Zane Baker, Johnny McMillan, Cam Carter (also second-five coverage), Clarke Botham, Regan Stuart, Dylan Manual, Gus Oliver (also lock)

Locks: Patrick Burns, Gene-Paul Flett, Peter Coles, Jason Reder (also back up Winger), Trent Shields and Tem Forbes (two flexible forwards, also loosies)

Loosies: Jayden Scott (first round), Matt Thomas, Anthony Casey, Amani Kala (also back up prop), Mason Oliver, Jordan Robb (also back up halfback)

Halfbacks: James Sopoaga, Ben Skilton

Inside backs: Taylor Reedy (also fullback coverage), Hayden Johnson and Matt Sandlant (2ndfive), Lucas Allen (centre)

Outside backs: Tyler Dallas, Fabian Elliot (also first-five coverage), Mitch Grey

We would also like to acknowledge all the parents, families, and friends who supported the under-20s squad throughout the season – your support made the boys play ‘out of their skins’ and kept their chins up, even when things weren’t quite going our teams way. We would also like to make a special mention to Winstone Aggregates who sponsored the team, without you the boy’s season would not have been possible.

Lastly, thanks to the Petone club for the opportunity to coach and manage this great bunch of guys in 2014.

COLTS BLUE TEAM

Coaches: Martin Pike, John PereiraManager: Geoff Styche

2014 saw only six players return from 2013 (Matt, Campbell, Billy, Daniel, Bailey and Jack), meaning we had to make a fresh start. These six were joined by three from the 2013 White team (Dylan, Chris and Ryan), three school leavers (Jerry, Victor and Cameron), three 2012 school leavers new to the club (Josh S, Jarrod and Craig) and two Englishmen (Alfie and Luke) who came over for a new rugby experience. A small squad of 17, which increased to 19 with two players (Josh F and Mike) coming down from Senior 1 (and a further two halfway through the season, Joe and George) meant we had to rely on players to play 80 minutes each week, and for most of them to be adaptable across various positions.

We started behind the eight ball with fitness levels varied across the squad and attendances at practice 12 at the highest. However the team battled, showed great character and kicked off the season with a 3 point win over arch rivals HOBM and a very good 35-19 win over Poneke. A few injuries meant we had a weakened team for the next two games which resulted in losses to Wellington and OBU. The turning point of the season was the introduction of Joe Perez at 10, down from Senior 1. He started with 25 points against MSP, and we rattled off wins over MSP, Ories, Norths then MSP and Ories again in the second round. In total we scored 158 points in these five games and the team played particularly well. Unfortunately Joe’s season ending injury in the Ories game and the onset of wet, boggy tracks led to a change in the results. A wet day and a bigger HOBM forward pack resulted in a crucial 10-15 loss. A depleted team the next week, ie the bare 15 players, made it very hard for us against the top team OBU. However we played really well this game but still lost 17-43. A sunny day the next Saturday also produced a very comprehensive attacking and defensive game in a 49-0 win. Unfortunately another wet weather loss to Norths meant we had to beat Wellington in the last game to qualify for the semi-finals. We played a good structured game in the wet, showed great passion, pride and determination to win 8-3. Unfortunately we got totally outplayed in the semi-final and lost to a very well drilled and skilful OBU team (which went on to win the grade and remain unbeaten for another year).

Individually the strength of the team was the loose forward trio of captain Jack Coles (before getting promoted to Senior 1), Dylan Williamson (who took over the captaincy) and Victor Knight (who played every minute of every game), and the inside back combination of Joe Perez (before he got injured), Jerry Galuefa and Cameron Smith. Other notables were the scrummaging of Englishmen Alfie and Luke, ball running of forwards Campbell and Daniel, great work at the contact by Billy, defence of Josh F and finishing off by Josh S and Matt. However it was the team spirit, culture and pride in each other that was the most dominant strength. When the team played to their pattern, they were exciting to watch, scored very good tries (both through backs and forwards) and defended around the fringes stoutly. Top point scorers were Joe Perez with 64 points from 5 games and Cameron Smith with 8 tries. Victor, Dylan, Jerry, Josh S, Jarrod and Cameron played over 1,000 minutes out of 1,200.

The team highlights were coming top four in both the first and second round, beating every team except OBU, the improvement of the team units (particularly some very good tries scored by the backs in the second round), the players versatility (eg 12 players played on the wing at some stage during the season – not including the props who also stood out there at times), the leadership skills of the two captains and the senior players, the introduction (and singing) of the team song, the farewells for Alfie and Luke and the great team culture that grew throughout the season. With a number of young players eligible again next year, the immediate future looks bright for Petone Colts.

Again the team was well supported (and well presented before, during and after games) by sponsor Winstone Aggregates, manager Geoff Styche, coaches Martin Pike and John Pereira, photographer Tarn Styche and many loyal parents and girlfriends.

JUNIOR REPORT

For the Junior Section the 2014 season officially kicked off on 15th February at the Petone Rotary Fair, promoting the club and registration day. It was great to catch up with up with many familiar faces. This was followed by a successful Family Registration Day on 2nd March, with lots of kids signing up and making good use of the bouncy castle, sausage sizzle, face painting and plenty of sun. A result giving rise to the junior section fielding 394 players across 22 teams through the U6 – U13 grades for 2014.

I am struggling to remember when the last time we had a season of no wholesale cancellations of games due to adverse weather conditions. Not to say that there was not a fair share of wet, cold and blustery Saturday mornings to contend with. Mud made a grand appearance in the closing weeks of the season as evidenced by some fantastic photography taken by a number of the parents and supporters.

It is important at this point to acknowledge all who supported the general movement against the Petone Arena proposal mooted earlier in the year. Whilst more than a little distracting to the start of the season, the end result was welcomed by many and the process clearly demonstrated a strong PRFC spirit to rally against the proposal and reemphasised our standing as a key sports and family-friendly hub for the wider Petone community.

It has been a positive year in respect of player performance and participation, supporting the Junior Sections player/team selection policy that promotes an even distribution of player talent across grades and ensures appropriate consideration is given to providing equal game time for all concerned.

I would like to acknowledge the good work of our Club Coaching Coordinator (CCO) Darren ‘Lardy’ Larsen for his continued involvement with the Junior Section (not forgetting the KonnectBlue programme) this season. There has been a noticeable step change in coaches engaging with Lardy this season, many leveraging his considerable knowledge and experience of the game and applying these to their respective training programmes and development of their teams. Thanks mate!

Like all others this season would not have been possible nor as successful were it not for efforts and time given by all of our volunteers. I am unable to name you all, but you know who you are. So to the coaches, managers, parents and supporters – the untold hours you put into make things happen, be it at trainings and games or supporting from the sideline, it is you who truly make it all happen and provide a safe and rewarding environment for our kids to play and enjoy the game of rugby. Thank you for your continued commitment.

Thank you again to Karl Belsham, Kirsten Henderson and Max Clifton for successful delivery of the Nursery Grade programme for 2014. As many of you will attest, it is no easy feat to pull together an introduction to rugby and skills programme for upwards of 70 pre-schoolers each Saturday morning. You make it look effortless. Thanks guys!

The club rep series comprising our best players from grades U10-U12 and hosted by PRFC this year kicked off with a hotly contested meet against Paremata Plimmerton. Going down 2 games to 1, we were able to reverse this result the following two weekends against MSP and Tawa respectively, ensuring we retained two of the three competition cups. Thanks to Grant Wall for again coordinating this event.

These strong performances were backed-up with PRFC contributing many players to the U12/U13 Hutt Valley Zone and U13 Wellington reps this year. Congratulations on your achievements boys!

The playing season officially drew to a close 30th Aug. and was celebrated at the annual prize-giving event on 5th Sept. and topped off with a rousing rendition of the club haka – a very stirring and passionate occasion for all (and the driving force behind our Premiers regaining the McBain Shield from HOBM earlier in the year, I think!)

Our club (and junior section) cannot operate without sponsorship, so I wish to give thanks to and acknowledge Stu Gibbons and his Stevens Ford Motors team, for their ongoing support of our junior rugby programme in 2014. As our principal sponsor their contribution enables PRFC to continue to grow and mature the junior section programme thereby enhancing the skills and capabilities of our junior membership.

I wish to also acknowledge and thank the club’s Management Committee for their continued support of the Junior Section and our rugby programme.

To the Junior Committee, thank you for the many hours (and late nights) working behind the scenes to help bring the season together. It has truly been a team effort. Rest up (but not for too long) and I look forward to working with you again next season.

To the 2014 ‘leavers’, go safely, enjoy college and all that it has to offer and your club looks forward to your return as senior players.

On behalf of the junior committee, thank you for making 2014 a great success and I sincerely wish you all a fabulous off-season with family and friends – soak up the sun, and I look forward to seeing you again next year.
