The ’Dam’s new outpost of Soho House towers over the Canal Ring, its six storeys topped by a swanky rooftop pool. Checking in means access to the private club floors and facilities, including the plush cinema and gym (hello, chilled towels and free post-workout kit-cleaning). Our ‘small’ room – spoiler: it’s really big – is chic but also cosy, with vintage knick-knacks, a kilim rug and an opulent mini-bar. Breakfast’s an epic, with cherries, waffles, pastries and eggs-to-order – best worked off with a spin around town on one of the hotel’s fleet of VanMoof bikes.

Ce nouvel avant-poste de Soho House, qui donne sur le Canal Ring, arbore une piscine sur son toit. Votre chambre vous donne accès aux installations du club privé, y compris le cinéma et le gymnase (serviettes froides et nettoyage gratuit de votre équipement). Notre « petite » chambre est chic mais aussi cosy, avec des bibelots vintage, un tapis kilim et un mini-bar fourni. Le petit-déjeuner est gargantuesque avec cerises, gaufres, pâtisseries et œufs sur commande – brûlezces calories en empruntant un vélo VanMoof de l’hôtel pour aller en ville.

It’s all change inside the Baptist church’s former UK HQ on Holborn – now a decadent hotel, designed by Jacques Garcia. Inside, it’s a riot of sumptuous patterns, tassels and velvet, with flocks of crystal birds perched on the chandeliers. Our room’s a trifle more restrained, though hardly pared-back, with its huge bed, peacock-embroidered cushions and sexy marble bathroom. Set in the octagonal chapel, its restaurant Baptist is the audacious finishing touch, where decadent dinners kick off with seven deadly sins-inspired cocktails.

À Holborn, l’ancien siège de l’église baptiste britannique est désormais un hôtel luxueux, conçu par Jacques Garcia. À l’intérieur, tout n’est que motifs somptueux, glands dorés et velours, avec des volées d’oiseaux en cristal perchés sur les lustres. Notre chambre est un peu plus sobre, mais compte un grand lit, des coussins brodés de paon et une salle de bains sexy en marbre. Dans la chapelle octogonale, le restaurant Baptist est la touche finale auda-cieuse, où les convives peuvent choisir parmi sept cocktails inspirés des péchés capitaux.

One of the walls bears the Paris motto: ‘She is tossed by the waves but doesn’t sink.’ And the Lutetia – which rather aptly was designed to resemble a vessel – shares its home city’s resilient streak. After decades in the doldrums and being closed for four years of renovations, it’s making a dazzling comeback, with a lobby adorned by freshly uncovered frescoes and easily the most glam spa in Paris. This month, it raises the luxury bar further with the opening of a brasserie helmed by three-Michelin-star chef Gérald Passédat, of Petit Nice fame.

La devise de Paris « Elle est battue par les flots mais ne sombre pas », orne un mur. Et le Lutetia, que l’on a d’ailleurs imaginé comme un navire, est de la même trempe que sa ville. Après des décennies de marasme et quatre ans de fermeture pour travaux, l’hôtel fait un retour triomphant avec un lobby orné de fresques fraîchement dévoilées et le spa le plus glamour de la capitale. Ce mois-ci, son bar haut de gamme se paie le luxe d’ouvrir une brasserie pilotée par le chef Gérald Passédat, ancien du Petit Nice et lauréat de 3 étoiles.
