Peter was a fisherman. He and his brother, Andrew, had a fishingboat on Lake Galilee. One day Jesus walked by and saw themfishing. “Come with me!” he said.

One day, by the lake, a crowd pushed close to Jesus to listen tohis teaching. “Get into my boat,” said Peter, “and they’ll all hearyou from there.” When Jesus had finished speaking he said toPeter, “Push the boat out further and let down your nets for acatch.”

“All right, if you say so,” said Peter. “But we worked hard allnight and caught nothing.” So Peter and Andrew and their friendsin another boat let down their nets. Suddenly the nets were sofull of wriggling fish that they almost broke.

Peter and Andrew were just two of the people Jesus asked to behis special friends. These friends were called disciples. They learntfrom Jesus and helped him. Jesus chose a certain number ofpeople to be his special friends.

Write the first letter of the word for each picture in the centre of thewheel to see how many disciples Jesus chose! Start with the teapot.

One day Peter and Andrew said to Jesus and the others, “Comehome with us for supper.” When they arrived at the house theyfound that Peter’s mother-in-law was ill in bed. Jesus went to her,took her hand and helped her get up. Right away she was welland she helped make their supper.

At the end of a busy day, Jesus told Peter and the other disciplesto cross the lake in a boat. Jesus went off by himself and climbeda hill to pray. Out on the lake a storm blew up and the boat wastossed about by huge waves. Jesus went to join his disciples,walking on the water.

The disciples thought it was a ghost and screamed. Jesus calledout, “Don’t be afraid! It’s me.” Peter shouted back, “If it’s reallyyou. Tell me to come to you.” “Come!” said Jesus. Peter climbedout of the boat and started to walk on the water. But then helooked at the waves and was scared. He began to sink. “Saveme!” he shouted and Jesus grabbed him. Together they got intothe boat and the storm died down.

Peter, James and John were Jesus’ closest friends. One day Jesustook them with him up a mountain away from the other disciplesand the crowds. Suddenly Jesus was completely changed and hisclothes were too bright and shining to look at. Peter and theothers were very frightened. Then two men appeared and talkedto Jesus.

Peter wanted to make shelters for them but then a cloud coveredthe figures and a voice spoke from the cloud. “This is my owndear Son – listen to him!” The cloud lifted, the men had gone andJesus looked as he usually did. Jesus gave Peter, James and Johnan instruction as they walked back down the mountain.

Jesus and his disciples often walked along dusty roads. Theywore sandals so their feet got very dusty. One evening just beforesupper, Jesus poured water into a basin and began to wash thefeet of each disciple. Peter was horrified because a servantusually did this job. “Lord, I won’t let you wash my feet,” he said.But Jesus told him there was a good reason for it and he let Jesusdo it. Jesus told his disciples, “Do for each other exactly what Ihave done for you.”
