Thought of the Week If there is something laudable make it audible!
Dear Parents and Carers Welcome back to the start of Term 2 which in the usual Poseidon manner promises to be a very busy and exciting term. Already planned events include NAPLAN Assessments, Dance Classes (PP – Year 6) and Winter Interschool Sports (Year 5/6).
Work has finally commenced on the school’s new nature playground. This should be completed by the end of May and students will then to be able to start enjoying this long overdue upgrade to our playground.
I will be taking leave commencing May 21 for a medical procedure that will require me to be away from school for the remainder of the term. During my absence, Michael Wright will be the Acting Principal and Margaret Willett and Michelle Porro will share the Acting Associate Principal’s position. Michelle Hennigan will fill the teaching responsibilities for the staff who will be working in an administrator’s role during this time.
I take this opportunity to wish all of the Mothers involved in our school community a very happy Mother’s Day for Sunday May 13. I hope you are all spoilt and have a fantastic day.
Dance Our whole school Dance Program commenced last week.
We will be utilising the skills of the staff from Humphries Dance Studio to instruct the students in a series of Salsa, Jive, Polka, Cha Cha, Samba and Line Dances.
The dance sessions will be conducted over a six week period for approximately one hour a week, culminating in a demonstration / competition during the last session on Monday June 25. It is planned to invite the parents to attend the final dance and enjoy a special canteen lunch with the students during the lunch break.

Interschool Winter Sports Our Year 5 & 6 interschool teams (football, soccer, hockey and netball) have been enthusiastically practising and are looking forward to the chance to test their skills in a game situation. We wish our teams all the best for their first games. All students are to wear their school uniform and bring a drink bottle.
Sports will be played from May 11 to June 15 as shown in the blue fixtures table shown on the right between approximately 1:20pm and 2:20pm with a staggered start. The lightning carnival will be held on Friday, June 22 in Week 8.
Each week Poseidon Primary staff work to allow the Winter Sports fixtures to take place. In the event of bad weather, a final decision is made at 12 noon on the day with regards to stopping the matches being played. If you are ringing to check if a game is going ahead, please do not phone the front office before 12 noon.
ECE Mother’s Day Morning Tea On Wednesday May 16 2018 from 8:30 to 10:00, our Early Childhood Education (ECE) classes will be holding a Mother’s Day morning tea in the ECE playground for Mums, Grandmas, Aunties & Older Sisters of Kindy, Pre-primary and Year 1 students.
Please RSVP to your classroom teachers by Friday May 11.

Safety Suggestions for Students To help ensure the safety of all students when travelling to and from school, we remind families each term of the simple but important ways they should regularly discuss and reinforce personal safety with their children.
Here are some suggestions to help children stay safe:
Always travel in company Walk on the right hand side of the road so you face oncoming traffic Wherever possible, leave space between yourself and the roadway Stay in areas that are well lit Stay in view – avoid going into areas that are hidden from view (such as parkland bush or behind
shopping centres) and plan trips to avoid such locations Be alert – earphones and headphones can reduce your awareness considerably If you have a mobile phone, have it turned on and ready to dial an emergency number If a passing car stops nearby never get too close Do not hesitate to run from a situation in which you feel at risk Provide this advice to brothers and sisters, especially if younger Report suspicious behaviour to parents, school and the police, noting number plates of cars and/or
clothing or distinguishing features of individuals.

Warwick SHS Specialist Programs 2019 Warwick Senior High School will be holding Trials and Testing for their 2019 Specialist and School Based Programs on May 22, 2018. Further information and details on how to apply can be found on the flyer at the end of this newsletter.
Belridge Secondary College Open Day Belridge Secondary College will be hosting their open day on Wednesday May 23, 2018. Further information and how to book the tour or course taster can be found on the flyer at the end of this newsletter.
Connect Connect is now the school’s preferred communication method. This is a platform that is provided free of charge to schools by the Education Department and is now commonly used by many primary and secondary schools. It will allow parents to receive information directly related to their child’s classroom learning needs as well as all the general information related events that are happening in the school.

Run4Fun Colour Explosion The Run4Fun Colour Explosion was a great success and enjoyed by all. We would like to thank all the volunteers, both from our school and the local community. Without volunteers these events can not go ahead. A special thank you to Terase and Anna who put in countless amount of hours for this event. We raised a total of $4057, awesome effort Poseidon.

The links between school achievement and parents’ ability to talk with kids from a young age are now well established.
The language stimulation children receive when they talk with parents is one factor. But engagement in conversation with parents benefits kids in a far broader sense. In many ways it is through conversations that kids get a real sense of us as parents. It is through talking with kids that we impart some of our knowledge, ideas, wisdom and thoughts while also gaining access to a window into their worlds and the way they think.
In the current age of digital distraction, talking with children and young people can be a challenge. Busy schedules, homes designed for individual enjoyment rather than group living, a plethora of screens competing for attention and kids that clam up at the first sign of a chat are some of the conversation blockers parents must overcome.
You need to be cunning, proactive and inventive to get some chat going at home. These are some ideas that will help.
1. Turn screens off. Are you competing with televisions, computers and electronic games for your kids’ attention? If so, take control of the screens to create some conversational space. Start with a screen-free day each week or screen-free hour each day if you have a home full of young hard-core screen junkies.
2. Turn screens on. If you can’t beat them, join them. Some television programs provide great conversational fodder, particularly for older children and teens. Topics can range from “Who’s going to win My Kitchen Rules?” or “What happens to the winners of My Kitchen Rules?” to “What is the point of My Kitchen Rules?”
3. Have regular mealtimes. The family that eats together talks together. Meals are great social occasions – more than just refueling stops. They provide terrific opportunities for families to get together and talk. It’s no coincidence that families who enjoy and appreciate food generally enjoy close relationships as well. However, for this to work it’s important that meals are screen free, so turn off the television and ban phones at the table.

4. Move more. If sitting and chatting is not your child’s thing then try to get some action happening. Boys, in particular, tend to talk more when they are playing, walking or involved in activity with an adult.
5. Talk with kids on their own turf. Many children will open up in the privacy of their own bedroom where they tend to feel more relaxed and secure. If you have something important to discuss then choose a comfortable place and a time that promotes good conversation.
6. Try shoulder-to-shoulder parenting. Travelling together in a car with the radio off, washing the dishes together or playing a game can all provide opportunities for talk. Paradoxically, many teenagers will talk more when they don’t have to concentrate or make eye contact with the other person. That’s why cars can be great conversation catalysts for parents.
Every family has their own way of getting the talk happening. Figure out what works for you and make sure it happens. The best communication in families happens when no one is working at it, however busy modern families need to work on their communication rather than leave it to chance.
