EXTERNAL ASSISTANCEIn addition to the resources that you will find at UWinnipeg, there are other sources in the community, the governmentand private organizations that can assist with paying for school. It is important to research and access all types of funding in order to beinformed and prepared.

MANITOBA STUDENT AID (MSA)Manitoba Student Aid provides supplemental financial assistance for post-secondary educational purposes to Manitobans with limited finances. The basic types of assistance are the Canada Student Loan and the Manitoba Student Loan. Most often the MSA you receive in a given year is not all loans. Within your funding there may be a grant or bursary that you do not have to pay back.

Value: The value of the loan will vary with each applicantdepending on your financial circumstances. The amount of loanyou receive is dependent on factors such as parental income,education costs and living costs.

Deadlines: It is strongly encouraged that you apply for MSA as soon as the applications become available. This will ensure you have your funding in place before school starts. MSA is available to both full-time and part-time students. You must complete a new MSA application each year.

• Applications for the Fall/Winter term come out in June each year.

• Applications for the Summer term come out in March.

THE BASICSThere are a few basic terms that post-secondary institutions use to describe financial assistance. Understanding these terms will guide you towards what support best fits your unique circumstance.

• Scholarship – the main criteria is academic achievement

• Bursary – the main criteria is financial need

• Award – the criteria is both financial need and academic achievement.

ENTRANCE AWARDSEntrance awards are directed to students who are attending The University of Winnipeg for the first time. You could be a high school student, a college or university transfer student, or a mature student coming back to study. Generally you apply to these awards when you apply for admission. The application deadline for these awards is normally early December.

APPLICATION-REQUIRED AWARDS Some entrance awards require that you fill out an application in order to be considered. An example of an application-required award is the Walter Leatherdale Entrance Scholarship. Students must fill out the Entrance Scholarship application form and be nominated by their high school.

AUTOMATIC AWARDSSome entrance awards are based on grade point average and students are considered for the awards just by applying to the University. An example of an automatic award is the Special Entrance Scholarship.The Special Entrance Scholarships are automatically offered to all Grade 12 graduates coming directly from a high school in Manitoba (or any another province in Canada), who meet the conditions below:

• Have at least an 80% final Grade 12 admission average

• Apply for admission to the University by March 1.

• Fees for courses that start in September (Fall and Fall/Winter) are due early September

• Fees for courses that start in January (Winter) are due early January

• Fees for courses that start in May (Spring/Summer) are due early May.

IN-COURSE AWARDSIn-Course awards are directed to students currently attending UWinnipeg and who are in second, third or fourth year. Generally you apply to these awards in the Fall term after you have enrolled in classes. The application deadline for these awards is normally in September and October.

DEPARTMENTAL AWARDS:Many of the departments on campus offer awards to students enrolled in specific majors, courses or year levels. Most departmental awards do not require applications – the department will nominate you based on your academic performance. Make sure to touch base with your department to see if you are eligible for any of these awards.

EMPLOYMENTIn addition to scholarships and awards, one of the easiest ways you can supplement your resources is with a part-time job.

Work-Study Program: Provides on-campus part-time job opportunities for eligible full-time undergraduate students. These jobs are available during the Fall/Winter (September to March). It offers you valuable life and work experience with flexible hours that work around your school schedule.
