One of the most important steps you can take to ensure the safety of your pets in an emergency or a disaster is to include them in your emergency preparedness plan. Part of that plan should include an emergency preparedness kit for your pets. To create a pet preparedness kit, ensure the following items are readily available in a safe location: Food (your pet’s regular food) Water Can opener if kit contains wet food Leash and collar Bowls Medications your pet needs Pet carrier labeled with your contact information First aid kit Toys, rope, and other comfort items Pet litter and litter box if appropriate, newspapers, paper towels and plastic trash bags Contact list of pet-friendly hotels, veterinarians, and out-of-town friends and family Photo of your pet or ID and a photo of you with your pet Immunization and vet records (keep both updated) Pet Emergency Preparedness Kit Checklist
