Therefore, it is no coincidence that the earliest medieval depiction of grape harvesting and vinification in Friuli is a fresco of the Perusini-Antonini House in Udine (14th century, now preserved at the Museo Civico). During the last century, when French varietals were still the height of fashion, viticulture in Friuli has Perusini to thank for selecting and safeguarding certain ancient grape varieties. Today, the winery is run by Teresa, Giampaolo’s daughter. Much like her uncle, she is an art historian and avid farmer; she divides her time between her studies and running the winery with the help of her husband, Giacomo de Pace and their three children Carlo, Tommaso and Michele. This way, the family tradition lives on the hills of Gramogliano, which have been known for centuries – together with those of Rosazzo and Rocca Bernarda – for their beautiful landscape, terrain, exposure and microclimate, making them the superior cru of the Colli Orientali del Friuli. The Perusini winery is not only innovative in its winemaking but also in its aesthetic choices. As such, next to the 17th- century manor house, the renovation of the premises included the construction of a unique wine cellar-tower designed by architect Augusto Romano Burelli as part of a study for the Italian Ministry of University and Research on new production typologies in the Mediterranean area. The tower’s interior, traversed by the Foucault pendulum, is decorated with mural paintings by Leon Tarasewicz, sculptures by Gianpietro Carlesso and paintings by Giancarlo Venuto. In recent years, the company has also taken advantage of its beautiful surrounding landscape. Today, guests can choose between 11 lodgings spread out across the three restored farmhouses on the Colle San Biagio and a house in the garden near the pool. All of the apartments have independent access to the surrounding natural environment, with covered terraces with tables and sun loungers to read and relax in the outdoors. Halfway up the Colle di Gramogliano, we have the welcoming “Al Postiglione restaurant”. In the garden of the manor house, there is a swimming pool (7 x 14 m), a ping-pong table and, in the wine cellar – tower, the winery’s store and reception. This area has Wi-Fi. 5 DAYS IN THE FRIULIAN VINEYARDS

PERUSINI WINERY – CORNO DI ROSAZZO (UD)

The Perusini Winery is one of the happy few (50 in total) listed in Luigi Veronelli’s Historic Italian Winegrowers (Vignaioli storici Italiani). Therefore, it is no coincidence that the earliest medieval depiction of grape harvesting and vinification in Friuli is a fresco of the Perusini-Antonini House in Udine (14th century, now preserved at the Museo Civico). The geographical position is fondmental, firstly because wine production is inevitably expression of the territory. The contamination of two different areas both for geographic features that culture and traditions, encourages the Tomasella family always to achieve the maximum in both areas in

the ongoing search for those details that bring a wine to be not only well done, correct, but something moreover, you get something that touches the soul. Passion, detail, delicacy, gentleness, care, continuous research are the fundamental features of the company.

At the Borgo delle Oche (Valvasone PN): “Borgo delle oche” was an ancient name of the road where the cellar is located in the medieval hamlet in Valvasone , with boasts feudal roots. Valvasone was known as the “lands of the wolf” , Lupi Terrae. Owners are Luisa Menini and Nicola Pittini , together in the life and work, with the same passion for Vineyard and high quality wine making. The strictly family run estate and its small size allow for scrupulous care of the vineyards. The way of working in the cellar is directed at preserving the grapes primary characteristics as near as possible and producing wines which keep them over time. Their objective is to make the most of the autochthonous grape varieties and recover ancient Friulian varieties like Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso and Friulano, which have been replaced by International varieties for decades. Since 1997 they grow Aromatic Traminer in a red clay soil to produce a white still wine and a sweet wine called “Alba”. Other wines produced: Merlot, Pinot grigio, sparkling white wine (Champenoise) The owners intend to follow the way of organic wines.

In our estate almost all works are hand made, the vineyards (7 hectars) are followed like organic estate, during the visit you can see and “touch” the vites that are growing speedy. In the third week of may, the vineyard is going to grow very much, the new shoots are close to the high wires and need to be tied down. The green suckers are very long and need to be removed. In our estate all this works are hand made, to preserve the quality of the plant and to make a complete work.

After the vineyard tour we can make the tasting of wines and visit the cellar: - wine tasting with 3 wines and some bread or bread sticks € 6,00 per person - wine tasting with 3/5 wines and some bread or bread sticks, cheese and ham € 10,00 per person - wine tasting with 6/9 wines and some bread or bread sticks, cheese and ham friulian bisquits € 12,00 per person
