To elevate public awareness regarding plastics, the Piedmont-Coastal Section of the Society of Plastics Engi-neers (SPE) is sponsoring the "Wonders of Plastics" Essay Contest.

Middle and high school students in the central and eastern North Carolina area are invited to submit essays dealing with some aspect of plastics, which will be judged by a committee from our local section. Each school may submit a maximum of 10 essays to the contest.

The winner will receive an iPad Mini and the winner’s school will receive a $250 donation. The winner will also have their essay printed in our monthly newsletter (the Perspective) which is circulated throughout North Carolina.

The winner and his/her parents will also be invited to attend our February 2016 local section meeting, where you will be our guests for dinner. The winner will be recognized along with other students who have received scholarships and awards from the SPE Piedmont-Coastal Section this year.

Entries may be submitted at any time, but the submission deadline is Friday, December 9, 2016. The winner will be announced in January 2017.

We strongly encourage students to enter this contest. Each essay must meet specific requirements and must be submitted with a completed entry form. The essay contest requirements and entry forms are available on the SPE website at:

http://www.4spe.org/Communities/sectiondetail.aspx?ItemNumber=5389

Completed entry forms and essays should be sent via email to:

Wonders of Plastics Essay Contest

A Note From SPE HQ: Unlike other societies, SPE has not increased its member dues in nearly a decade. Not surpris-ingly our membership ‘price’ is at the low end of the market. Our member dues remain our largest source of income and provide much needed support for new programs. Accordingly, it was decided to increase the yearly dues to $155 for new and renewing members. Those memberships which expire in the next few months will still have the opportunity to renew at the current rates before the new rate comes into effect on 1/1/2017.
