Definition Administers the instructional, support and operational functions of an elementary school; manages the staff, program and

physical resources; performs related division wide administrative duties as required or assigned.

Supervision Duties are performed under the direction of an Executive Director of Schools. Work is reviewed in terms of

compatibility with program goals and plans in assigned areas of responsibility. Direct supervision is exercised over

professional, technical, and support staff assigned to the school to which assigned.

Distinguishing Characteristics This is the highest level of administration and supervision at an elementary school.

Essential Functions of the Class

Supervise the school’s education program.

Assume responsibility for the implementation and observance of all board policies and regulations by the school’s staff and students.

Supervise all professional, paraprofessional, administrative and nonprofessional personnel attached to the school.

Assist in the hiring, training, assigning, and evaluating of the school professional staff.

Assume responsibility for the safety and administration of the school plant.

Assist in the in-service orientation and training of teachers, with special responsibility for staff administrative procedures and instructions.

Supervise the preparation of all school reports for the central office.

Assume responsibility for attendance, conduct, and health of students.

Assist in the management and preparation of the school budget.

Minimum Education, Experience, and Training Requirements Completion of college with a master's degree in school administration, with extensive progressively more responsible

experience in elementary or middle school teaching and as an assistant principal, coordinator or director; or any

equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide the above noted knowledge, skill, and ability.

License/Certification Postgraduate Professional License with one or more elementary school subject teaching endorsements and as an

elementary school principal (unless covered by provisions allowing certification as a secondary principal).

Physical Attributes Work requires normal physical attributes required for walking, standing sitting, operating office equipment,

communication equipment, lifting, moving, carrying light equipment, supplies, etc.

Hazards Most of the time work involves only exposure to normal, everyday risks, however, some activities may involve working

Distinguishing Characteristics This is the highest level of administration and supervision at a middle school.

Essential Functions of the Class

Prepares or oversees preparation of a master schedule for the implementation of an educational program, with

optimum use of facilities and staff.

Studies the educational needs of the community served by the school and develops or adapts educational

programs approved by the N.P.S. School Board to meet the particular needs of the community served, including

programs for special needs, disabled, and handicapped students.

Supervises the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of instructional programs and materials

for regular and special classes.

Provides continuing observation, supervision, and evaluation of faculty and support staff.

Develops and carries out staff development and in-service training programs.

Reports to the appropriate sources regarding the school's needs with respect to personnel, curriculum,

equipment, and supplies; develops the school's annual budget request and oversees expenditures and

expenditure controls.

Interviews prospective employees and makes recommendations regarding their employment.

Supervises and actively participates in a variety of student activities.

Oversees the maintenance of standards concerning student safety, health, discipline, and general welfare.

Oversees student counseling and related pupil service activities.

Administers a comprehensive community relations program, including school advisory council and PTAs.

Directs the provision of appropriate programs for special populations (disabled, handicapped, etc.); oversees

child-study meetings.

Consults with and coordinates the services of instructional support personnel to assist classroom teachers.

Oversees or participates in disciplinary hearings.

Maintains continuing communications and liaison with parents, parent groups, civic and community sources to

achieve understanding and support for school programs and goals.

Directs or carries out a variety of administrative operational responsibilities, including general supervision of

student transportation and utilization and maintenance of buildings and facilities, and cafeteria operations.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Broad knowledge of principles and practices of modern public middle school education, as well as of public school

administration and organization, and an ability to apply them to the needs of the school.

Comprehensive knowledge of current curriculum and instructional practices and trends, school law, personnel

and fiscal management.

Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate and administer a comprehensive public middle school.

Ability to supervise and evaluate the work of both professional and support staff.

Ability to develop effective working relationships with community, staff, and the general public.

Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Minimum Education, Experience, and Training Requirements Completion of college with a master's degree in school administration, with extensive progressively more responsible

experience in elementary or middle school teaching and as an assistant principal, coordinator or director; or any

equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide the above noted knowledge, skill, and ability.

License/Certification Postgraduate Professional License with one or more middle school subject teaching endorsements and as a middle school

principal (unless covered by provisions allowing certification as a secondary principal).

Physical Attributes Work requires normal physical attributes required for walking, standing sitting, operating office equipment,

communication equipment, lifting, moving, carrying light equipment, supplies, etc.

Hazards

Most of the timework involves only exposure to normal, everyday risks, however, some activities may involve

working with students with disabilities that require knowledge of intervention and restraint techniques.

May be required to resolve student conflicts, deal with irate parents, and intervene to prevent trespass or illegal

transactions among students.

Unusual Demands

Include activities in schools, in the community, and require one to have or arrange for own transportation.

Work is subject to deadlines and inherent in tailoring and delivering programs to meet the needs of many
