6 bad Personal Branding advice
(And a good one)
Personal Branding is trending, which is great. But the information published and
even giving by speakers is mostly wrong and sometimes harmful. Under this thought I
wrote the worst advice I found on the internet, lectures, seminars and conferences
I have attended on the subject.
"The first thing to do is to enlarge your
network and contacts"
Bad advice 1
The first thing to do is become a good contact for others. There is a
misperception that a network should be measured by its size, but like a
paintwork a network is measured by its quality, so you must be a valuable
contact for someone else.
"You need a SLOGAN"
Bad advice 2
You're not a brand of tampons, your value is much higher than that, do not use cheap tricks like you're a piece of super absorbent cotton.
People should remember you because of your work, not your
slogan.
"Use your full name as email, web address, make stickers
and put your name to the cat"
Bad advice 3
False! in a world where a person receives 10,000 advertising impacts a day, that your name comes up 2 or
7 times does not make any difference. Can you say the real
name of Kim Dotcom or Banksy? Put your name each time you can say
what a Hummer says about its owner penis.
"The most powerful tool for personal branding is VIDEO"
Bad advice 4
This is a lousy advice, absolutely NO. The most powerful tool of your
Personal Branding is your experience and how you manage to transmit it to others. The truth is that if you're not
an it’s doubtful you can do something well done. Now if you want to get a video CV, do please and upload it to
9gag ;)
"You need a LOGO so people can remember
you"
Bad advice 5
No, believe me. People put to much effort in doing business cards, folders
with your name and logo and web site. But few are those who care first
to know really how to stand out. A logo can be if you're a designer... or if
you're not but want to look like a really pretentious douchebag.
"Never do anything that would compromise your professionalism"
Bad advice 6
This is the biggest lie of all. You must be a provocateur, it has been said
from Einstein to George Lois, do what you are not supposed to do. In a world where everyone tries to be correct, the weirdo is the one who
makes the difference.
Banksy actually painteda mural to prove that he was
not in jail.
Malala, stood up for education and changed the world.
When da Vinci was 24 years old, he was arrested with male friends on charges of sodomy.
You must be a good contact to others.
Good advice
And a provocateur.
