Company HistoryThe manufacturing and trading company HÄNEL was founded in 1921. The youngcompany devoted itself to creating solutions for employee protection in high-riskwork environments.Even then, the family held company strived to create a model of today’s corporatephilosophy: The customer is the focal point, and their satisfaction is top priority. The large-scale production of radiation and welder protective products came to theinternational market in the 1930s, and HÄNEL became an international leader withits MAVIG products. In 1983, MAVIG created the foundation of the company’s future with its new fac-tory facility in the commercial park Moosfeld in Munich. The modern productionand administration facilities were extended to over 5000 m2, offering adequatespace for further development and innovation. The complete identification of the company and product became unified in 1999by converting the company from Hänel GmbH into MAVIG GmbH.

Pliability, flexibility and absolutely homogene-ous radiation protection – these special

quality factors of MAVIG radiation pro-tection gloves are guaranteed by a spe-cial production procedure and the useof top quality basic materials. During

the course of several complex processes, the gloves are carefully dipped layer for

layer on porcelain molds. This means thereare no seams, which are not acceptable accor-

ding to RöV/DIN 6813 in gloves for general radio-logical procedures. The shape of our gloves takesaccount of all daily requirements in medical practi-ce. The generous cut makes them easy to put onand take off, the slightly curved shape of the fingersmakes it easier to move. The long shaft also protects most of the lower arm (glove length 40 cm.)

You will not find any gloves in our programmethat do not have a rolled edge, because only anelastic, compact rolled edge prevents the dangerof tearing. Therefore, the MAVIG 215 series isonly manufactured with a rolled edge.

As far as material quality is concerned, we wouldlike to emphasize that we work only on the basisof top quality natural rubber, mixed with radia-tion-absorbing components in procedures subjectto the strictest test directives. The quality productis rounded off by a special coating on the insidewhich is friendly to the skin and easy to clean. Itgoes without saying that MAVIG gloves are easyto disinfect and sterilize. For extra hygiene, weinclude matching liners made of 100% cottonwith every delivery.

Special glove 212CH

Due to temporary difficultieswith our raw material supplierwe have temporary replace-ment gloves that meet all direc-tives for radiation protection asshown in the illustration on theright.

For some procedures requiring interventi-on in the active beam range or in theimmediate vicinity of the active beamfield, normal X-ray protection glovesmay not be suitable. For this particularuse, we have developed special X-rayprotection gloves with open glove innersurface.

For difficult procedures, the user canreach out of the glove with his fingers, while the hand surface and sides are stillprotected from radiation. The generousshaft length also protects most of thelower arm.

Our MAVIG Special X-Ray Gloves in themodel 212CH series are made from high-ly flexible, pliable lead rubber multi-layermaterial with easy-care Nappaflex coa-ting. As an additional quality feature, thegloves are fitted with an inner lining ofpure cotton. Two rubber straps assure afirm, optimum fit. These straps runacross the inner hand surface and thumb. With this design, one single standardsize covers all normal glove sizes.

Quality and comfortThe quality requirements for X-ray protectionclothing are greater than ever. Modern radiology-supported diagnostic and therapeutic procedu-res extend the wear time for protective clothing;protection requirements differ according to use.A well considered variation policy allows us tooffer you the kind of mature, broad-based rangeof models you can expect from us as an interna-tional market leader for radiation protection.

Lead-rubber multi-ply materialNatural rubber-based lead rubber, without artifi-cial plasticisers or other negative vinyls. A mate-rial which has kept us in the lead as manufactu-rers of X-ray protection clothing for many years, with excellent marks for weight distribution andradiation protection.

NovaLite radiation protection materialThis first-class radiation protection material getsbest marks for weight distribution and radiationprotection. The NovaLite generation safely fulfilsthe fundamental ergonomical requirements par-ticularly at workplaces with long wear times ofX-ray protection clothing. See also further infor-mation on page 13.

Product Information

NovaLite – the innovation in X-ray protectionWith NovaLite, MAVIG presents a radiation pro-tection material, developed on the basis of scien-tific findings which combines the very latestrequirements for safety and ergonomics. Thanksto NovaLite, it is possible to achieve what seemedimpossible up to now, namely high radiation ab-sorption with low material weight.

Forget the "heavy-as-lead" tradition of X-ray pro-tection clothing. Only protective clothing that doesnot permanently draw attention to itself fromits weight and clumsiness will also manage not tohinder the manifold tasks of daily use. MAVIGX-ray protection clothing of NovaLite radiationprotection material makes routine certainly lesstiresome. Without tiring, you can devote yourconcentration to the important matters at hand.Physical relief thanks to the far lower materialweight thus fulfils a basic requirement of ergo-nomic and labour-physiological principles.

The progress achieved by our new NovaLitematerial can be measured:

30% weight reductioncompared to batches of standard material!

Natural rubber is the base material for NovaLite.Negative substances such as vinyl chloride, PVCand plasticisers were eliminated.

The decisive breakthrough in the ratio protectionfactor to weight came for NovaLite with a com-pletely new recipe structure and a fully homo-geneous distribution of the radiation-absorbingfiller in the carrier material.

This is confirmed by test report "L1-22/96" ofthe Bavarian State Department for IndustrialSafety, Industrial Medicine and Safety Technology. Our NovaLite radiation protection material isperfectly homogeneous with a weight-optimi-zed X-ray protection clothing. Novalite complieswith the newest laws and regulations, and meetsthe requirements of the new DIN 6857-1.

Comfort 660/EURO-STYLE 662

Are you just looking for the "obligatory" X-rayapron, or are you looking for X-ray protectionclothing to accompany your active working daywith outstanding qualifications – an X-ray pro-tection apron which

fits correctly and comfortably immediatelywithout being difficult to put on

fits snugly to your body and is very comfor-table to wear

is just that bit ahead when it comes to radia-tion protection ....

In this case, you should opt for the series COM-FORT 660.

In designing this generation of aprons, wehave not only used our many years of experienceas leading manufacturer but also implementednew ideas and suggestions obtained from com-mitted consensus with users.

This is why we offer this series of aprons in twodifferent materials, either lead rubber multi-plymaterial or NovaLite. You can choose the apronyou need depending on the frequency of useand individual periods of wear.

The design with high quality lead rubber multi-ply material gets excellent marks for weight dis-tribution and radiation protection making it isideal for use in conventional X-ray tasks at lowerand average frequency of use and short wearingperiods.

The design with first-class NovaLite radiation pro-tection material, with excellent marks for weightdistribution and radiation protection, ensuresthat the COMFORT series meets all fundamentalergonomic requirements for radiology work-places.

Velcro is not always velcro...MAVIG uses only the very best velcro fasteners. The service life is also improved by the wide de -sign of the fastener. And if wear really shouldoccur, the fasteners can be replaced quicklyand inexpensively thanks to the design of theCOMFORT series.

One of the features which contributesto the extraordinary comfort of thisseries ...The wide stretch insert in the back panel allowseach apron to be adjusted to each individual, with a good fit and shoulder relief even whenthe X-ray protection clothing has to be worn fora long time (MAVIG utility patent)

Frontal protection alone isnot enough ...Which is why RöV/DIN6813 also takes intoaccount that the shoulder blades and ribs haveto be protected. Our COMFORT series 660 notonly offers exemplary compliance with this requi-rement but the generously overlapping backpanels also provide added radiation protection.

Lightweight, dependable protection ...... a suitable way of describing the BALANCEseries 631. The phrases radiation safety andlight-weight were previously a contradiction interms when it comes to the physical load impo-sed on the body by protective clothing. But thedevelopment of our new two-piece series has re-sulted in a breakthrough, with a synthesis of highsafety at minimum weight load on the body.

The patent claim of BALANCE series 631 is na-turally not only based on its conception as atwo-piece but also on the special features whichclearly differentiate it from previous two-piecedesigns.

We now make it easy for you to opt for the bestprotection. The two-sided overlap of the frontparts in vest and skirt achieve a front lead equiva-lent of 0.5 mm. And so easy to put on – the vestis closed simply with the velcro fastener at chestheight, and the skirt similarly at waist height.

Conventional wrap around protection designsachieve the required radiation protection byoverlapping sections. Allthough the protectionmay be minimized when the clothing is not puton properly or when the size does not fit exactly. Our BALANCE series 631 does away with theserestrictions: the vest and skirt each have a doublelayer for a good 8 cm width on the side. Thisprovides the required protection of 0.5 mm evenwithout the overlap. These "safety zones" arein a different colour so you can see them rightaway.

Designed with first-class NovaLite radiation pro-tection material, with excellent marks for weightdistribution and radiation protection, the BALAN-CE series safely meets the fundamental ergono-mic requirements for all radiological workplaceswhere protective clothing has to be worn forlong hours at a time.

Back relief ...It's easier to keep your composure in daily routi-nes thanks to the elastic back panel in the skirt. At the same time, you can vary the skirt widthwith differing panel widths. Fortunately, these canbe easily exchanged with zip fasteners.

Savings in the right place ...To give you more freedom to move and betterweight distribution, the skirt has a step cut-out,still giving your knee the optimum front andside protection.

Easy to move ...Your work routines demand movement. Toensure that you are not suddenly without protec-tion at the back when you bend over, the backsection of the vest overlaps generously with the skirt.

Added safety with the snug fit ...The skirt has a wide belt as an additional waistfastener. The lower section also has snap faste-ners to prevent it drifting apart unintentionally.

Integrated thyroid protection ...Today we know that the thyroid gland is particu-larly sensitive to radiation and therefore requiresspecial protection. It has therefore becomecommonplace to wear suitable additional pro-tection for high dosage X-ray examinations. Thishas been considered by providing the two-piecevest with standard snap fasteners for attachingthe thyroid/sternum shield model 614 (separateitem), specially designed for the 631 series.

Synergy 632

Ideal radiation protection as we see it lets youcarry on with your daily routines without con-cern. At radiology workplaces where radiationprotection clothing has to be worn frequentlyfor long periods, it is time to break with the"heavy-as-lead" tradition. High radiation expo-sure and considerable physical stress for the userused to define the every day situation at theseworkplaces. Our newly developed concept –SYNERGIE 632 – is a solution which providesconcrete help.

As a rule, conventional all-round protectionmodels have the following disadvantages: high weight load on vertebral column and

joints additional heat stress for the body restriction of breathing with constricted chest inadequate fit, uncomfortable to wear

To counteract these problems was the intentionin developing a new generation of X-ray protec-tion coats. The patent claim we have obtained forthe series SYNERGIE 632 shows that our concep-tion meets this tough requirement.

Light-weight, optimum protection. The fully over-lapping front sections of the coat achieve a leadequivalent of 0.5 mm on the front and createthe requirements for the amazing wearing com-fort of the SNYERGIE series: best weight distribu-tion, extremely pliable and flexible material. Therisk of the all-round protection designs in thepast, which only achieve the required protectionvalue by overlapping panels, was that the safetyaspect was put at risk when the clothing wasnot put on properly or when the size did not fit100%. Our SYNERGIE series 632 does away withthese concerns: the coat has a double layer forat least 8 cm on the side, and the same also app-lies to the shoulder sections which are not over-lapping in design. In this way, we provide youwith full protection at 0.5 mm Pb. These "safetyzones" have a differently coloured outer coverso that you can detect them easily.

For us, comfort also means that the X-ray protec-tion clothing is easy to put on and take off: thecoat is simply closed at chest height with velcrofasteners, and fits correctly without any morefussing.

Designed with first-class NovaLite radiation pro-tection material, with excellent marks for weightdistribution and radiation protection, the SYNERGIE series safely meets the fundamentalergonomic requirements for all radiologicalworkplaces where protective clothing has to beworn for long hours at a time.

Back relief par excellence:The elastic belt provides continuous support and"takes the burden off your shoulders", withoutgiving you the feeling of being constricted. Youcan even fasten the belt on one side or on bothsides of the coat, a variable strip of snap fasten-ers ensures it sits properly on your waist.

Savings in the right place ...To give you more freedom to move and betterweight distribution, the back of the coat has astep cut-out, still giving your knee optimum frontand side protection.

Another detail ...An additional snap fastener towards the bottomof the coat ensures that it does not drift apartunintentionally.

Integrated thyroid protection ...Today we know that the thyroid gland in everyrespect is particularly sensitive to radiation andtherefore requires special protection. It has there-fore become commonplace to wear appropriateadditional protection for high dosage X-ray exa-minations. We take account of this by providingthe coat in the SYNERGIE series with standardsnap fasteners for attaching the thyroid/sternumshield model 614 (separate item), designed spe-cially to go with this series.

Ergonomic 650

The comfortable, wide cross straps also meanthat the apron slides under the surgical gownby simply opening the velcro fasteners at thefront of the surgeon's apron.

Thanks to the design with innovative, weight-reducing NovaLite radiation protection material, with excellent marks for weight distribution andradiation protection, our ERGONOMIC series650 helps to facilitate coping with daily routines.

The special design of this series offers the greatadvantage that all standard sizes can be coveredwith just one size.

Classic design and innovation were both patronsto the latest modification of the ERGONOMICseries. Working on the basis of the tried and tes-ted design, we have introduced a few, perhapsinitially inconspicuous, changes to achieve con-siderable improvements in the comfort and fitof this series.

Radiation protection clothing which does notburden the wearer with unnecessary weight andpoor wearing properties when working in thesurgical suite, but still offers ideal radiation pro-tection: these were the basic requirements. Theyhave been implemented in an exemplary mannerby our surgeons' apron series ERGONOMIC 650.

The shoulder pads provide noticeable relief par-ticularly when worn for long periods, with aconsiderable reduction of normal pressure onthe shoulders.

It is so easy to put this coat on and take it offagain. The three horizontal velcro fasteners inthe front of the coat also allow for individual ad-justment. The bottom part of the coat has late-ral slits to provide more freedom of movement.

Thanks to the design with innovative, weight-reducing NovaLite radiation protection materialwith excellent marks for weight distribution andradiation protection, the CLASSIC series 636helps to make your daily routines easier.

This coat series can also be ideally combinedwith a belt:The wide elastic stretch belt offers outstandingrelief for your back, without any unpleasantfeeling of being constricted. You can fasten thebelt using snap fasteners at the side, with a vari-able line of snap fasteners to ensure it is correctlypositioned at waist height.

The coat can also be combined with a standardbelt: in this case we fit appropriate loops to thecoat.

When placing an order, please state how youwant to wear your coat: with stretch belt or standard belt, or withoutany belt at all.

Ovarian shield 278

The design of this MAVIG ovarian shield is unsur-passed and meets the requirements of radiologypractice, past and present. The radiation load onthe female gonads is reduced considerably with-out interfering with the diagnostic techniques.

Extensive studies provided the basis for the sizeand position relation between the anterior iliacvertebrae (fixed point), the ovary shield, and itsprojection on the pelvic image. The two controlmarks that are permeable to radiation facilitateproper and uncomplicated positioning.

Each of the three sizes is adjustable thanks tothe fan shape that allows for optimum finetuning. A set with all sizes offers the best possi-ble protection for all of your patients.

It goes without saying that the shield is easy toclean and disinfect.

Testicle protection 280

The unpleasant features of most testicle pouchesare well known. They are either too tight or tooloose; versions with hinges suggest the not un-founded risk of crushing; they are difficult orcomplicated for the patient to put on; the hygie-nic properties are inadequate.

The fact that there are other possible solutionsis demonstrated in an exemplary manner by thelatest series of MAVIG testicle protection, theseries 280.

A padded, elastic "key-case" fastener appliesonly soft pressure and ensures that the protec-tion fits correctly and safely throughout the ent-ire procedure. The rounded product designposes absolutely no risk of injury to the patient. There are also some major advantages for theassisting staff: it is easy to explain to the patienthow to wear the protection and the hygieniccharacteristics are absolutely ideal. The coatingof the MAVIG testicle pouch 280 is gentle tothe skin and offers perfect seamless hygieneoutside and inside. Cleaning and disinfection areabsolutely no problem.

Radiation protection has naturally been giventhe utmost priority in our product concept. Increase the service life of your X-rayprotection clothing by paying attentionto proper storage. Folding the clothing, hanging it over sharp edges, or usinginappropriate hooks will keep your clo-thing from "growing old." X-ray pro-tection clothing should not be stored inthe direct vicinity of heat sources.

Improper storage is a major cause ofdangerous damage to radiation protec-tion material. Because the damage isnot visible from the outside, the dama-ged x-ray protection clothing remains inservice. For this reason, the viability ofthe protective clothing must be checkedat regular intervals.

Compensating filters

An often indispensable aid when it comes toquality assurance, the MAVIG compensating fil-ter. The use of this filter produces a considerableincrease in detail detection, particularly in areasfrequently subjected to over-radiation. You willalso see a noticeable improvement in X-ray qua-lity when it comes to the contrast range.

The extremely disturbing soft beam componentswhich always occur in X-ray images can be eli-minated by aluminium filters made from a spe-cial alloy. The shape of the aluminium bodydepends on the object of the X-ray. The alumi-nium body of all filters is mounted on a trans-parent base plate.

These filters are very easy to use: the filter issimply inserted into the accessories holder of thecollimator. All previous adjustments and settingscan be kept as usual.

Scatter Grids

The most important and effective means ofreducing scatter radiation, which considerablyimpairs image quality because of inadequatecontrast reproduction, is the scatter grid. TheMAVIG range of grids, based on the outstan-ding Lysholm products, provides considerableimprovement in the quality of your X-rays.

The effect of scatter grids is based on their direc-tional effect. Scatter radiation is emitted at adifferent angle than the primary radiation beamand is absorbed by the very fine lead strips. Theprimary radiation beam, which runs in the direc-tion of the strips, passes through with minimumabsorption. The quality of a grid depends to alarge degree on the choice of interspacingmaterials. MAVIG uses only the highest qualityaluminium medium between the lead stripsallowing the primary radiation to pass throughthe grid essentially unweakened.

The grid surfaces protecting the lead strips andinterspacing materials are also important to qua-lity. Inadequate designs can result in unwantedweakening of the primary radiation beam ornot adequately protecting the delicate "insides"of the grid. Our grids provide ideal protectionagainst mechanical damage and the penetrati-on of moisture, while ensuring excellent imagequality.

Focused gridsFocused grids produce highly effective scatterabsorption. The absorbing lead strips are inclinedin such a way that the divergent primary radiationcan pass between the strips. Focusing meansthat the inclination of the lead strips correspondsto the divergence of the primary radiation at adefined distance. A focused grid thus becomesineffective when out of focus (wrong distanceto the focus) or out of center (focus not in theplane of the center strip). Therefore, when deci-ding to purchase a grid, it is important to consi-der whether the corresponding X-ray technologycan meet the strict requirements for centeringand focusing. For X-rays taken at the patient'sbedside or at accident worksites, as a rule, par-allel grids are used as described below.

Parallel gridsParallel grids are used when the X-ray technologycannot guarantee the stringent requirements offocused grids requiring precise centering andfocusing, e.g. X-rays taken at the patient's bed-side or in the accident ward. Here, most of thegrids are parallel in design: the absorber stripsare not inclined making the importance of theexact focusing of the central beam no longerimportant.

Interspacer, number of linesThe characteristics of a scatter grid also dependon the following variables:

height of the lead strips thickness of the lead strips thickness of the interspacing material no. of lines per cm

These characteristics determine the parameterswhich define the final grid design: ratio (heightof lead strips versus distance between eachstrip) and lines/cm (number of lines per cm).

Line progressionStandard line progression is parallel to the longi-tudinal side of the grid. On request, so-called"cross lamella" grids can be supplied, i.e. withline progression parallel to the narrow side ofthe grid.

Insert gridMAVIG insert grids fit all commercially availablegrid cassettes. Standard film formats are statedin the overview table. Special formats are gladlysupplied on request.

The "history" of the scatter grids in brief:

Soon after the discovery of X-rays byWilhelm Röntgen, the deterioration ofthe image caused by scatter radiationemanating from the object being X-rayed, became a topic for discussion.Various attempts to neutralize this nega-tive effect failed, until, in 1913, inBerlin,Gustav Bucky introduced the firstscatter grid. It consisted of lead strips.

Tunnel gridsThe tunnel grid (grid bridge) design offers thefollowing advantages:

One scatter grid – usable for any number of cassettes of the same size with differing screen combination

Additional protection of the grid from mechanical damage

Practical use for X-rays taken at the patient's bedside

It is worth paying particular attention to the cle-ver design of the frame structure in the MAVIGtunnel grids. The design is easy to use, suitablefor heavy duty application, and has a prolongedservice life. The product is characterized by highquality materials and consistent imple-mentation of qua-lity directives.
