Dear Students and Parents,

Welcome to Quest Martial Arts! Personal Notes from Master Bogdanski

My interest in martial arts actually came early when in fifth grade I watched a Judo class. I ended up enrolled in a boxing program taught by my school teacher Rollie Pier, a professional boxer.

I began karate because of being bullied and beaten up. When I was sixteen I suffered at the hands of a neighborhood bully and was traumatized both emotionally and physically. It was a few months after this episode that I watched a karate class and knew that it was for me.

Since 1969 I have trained with many great instructors and in many martial arts systems. My first teacher was a Philippine man named Jose Deguzman who would whet my appetite for martial arts training. He ran very tough and demanding classes that would tax any beginner or advanced student. He took a liking to me and would invite me to train privately with him at his home on the weekends. I always showed up and trained hard. He is gone now but he set a great example of how I should conduct myself as a martial arts teacher.

I am currently a Master Instructor (eighth degree Black Belt) in martial arts. With a Bachelors degree in psychology and a Masters Degree in School Counseling I have devoted my life to martial arts. With this background and experience, I have become a child development expert who is also a master motivator and success coach. My mission is to create a better world filled with people who are happy, healthy, confident and successful, benefiting in life from a unique martial arts experience.

Our martial arts program provides a comprehensive and unique course encompassing effective karate, judo, aikido, ju jitsu, boxing and ninjutsu techniques. It is a state of the art martial arts system, renowned for developing well-rounded and effective students. Please see my bio on the website for a complete list of my teachers over the past 45 years.

Competition was a big part of my martial arts career. I have competed and won on a national and international level. I have won gold medals at the World Cup in Hungary, Team Captain on the winning U.S.A. sparring team – Moscow (Olympic sports complex), World cup gold medalist- Michigan, Won five first places in Australia competition (twice), Nationally rated competitor in forms and weapons by Professional Karate League, Winner of Ct Martial Arts Federation Tournament of champions, winner of New England Grands (invitation only), numerous 1st, 2nd, 3rd place trophies and tournament Grand championships.

Visit www.mikebogdanski.com to read about my anti bully program. Because of my own bullying experience, I realize that bullying is an international epidemic and that I can make a difference. I have traveled in Canada and throughout the United States speaking to kids about the problem of bullying and how we can deal with it nonviolently. It is my goal to speak in every state in order to spread my message. My anti bully program is called –H.E.R.O. and stands for Help Everyone Respect Others.

Master Kristin Duethorn

Master Duethorn (co-owner) is the head instructor of the school. Her experiences here as a student and as a parent of two students transformed her life creating the catalyst for a career change. In 2002 she left the teaching and guidance counseling profession to pursue a full time career in the martial arts:

For me, teaching is an interactive experience between the teacher and the student. At our best we use the teacher/student relationship to create a synergistic approach to understanding Tang Soo Do more deeply and personally. Moreover, I believe that the training we receive in the Dojang is intended to transform our understanding of who we are now, and who we would like to be. It also helps us deal with life’s challenges in new ways as well as helping us to enjoy life more completely.-SBN Duethorn

Master Duethorn is currently a 5th Dan in Tang Soo Do, and a blue belt in BJJ. She is also a certified F.A.S.T. defense instructor. Taking seminars and traveling to study with other master instructors is part of her current training routine. She has competed locally and internationally winning Grand Champion in forms, weapons and sparring as recently as 2016. She was the New England overall cup winner in 2008, the USGTSDA Master of the Year in 2014, and was elected chairperson of the USGTSDA board in 2015.

She is married to Mark Duethorn and lives in Pomfret where she raised her two adult sons, Colin and Kyle. In addition to martial arts, she enjoys writing, working with teens, and traveling. Her roles at the school include teaching, staff training, calendar and event planning, curriculum design, demonstration and tournament team, and tuition/membership services. She also really enjoys giving private lessons where students can challenge themselves by bringing out their best performance. She is a strong believer that all women (especially teenagers) need to be trained in the basic skills of boundary setting, assertiveness, and self defense. She is available for workshops in this area as well.

A Brief History of Tang Soo Do

The martial art of Tang Soo Do is relatively modern. However, its basis, the Korean art of Soo Bahk Do, dates back many centuries. Tang Soo Do is a composite style, being 60 percent Soo Bahk Do, 30 percent northern Chinese and 10 percent southern Chinese. Our kicking techniques, for which Tang Soo Do is unsurpassed, are based on Soo Bahk Do and were first developed during the Silla Dynasty (618-935 A.D.), but enjoyed its flowering during the Koryo Dynasty (935-1392 A.D.).

Tang Soo Do is both a hard and soft style, deriving its hardness in part from Soo Bahk Do and its soft flowing movements from northern Chinese systems.

The man who developed Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan, Grandmaster Hwang Kee, is a martial arts prodigy, having mastered Tae Kyon (another Korean system not related to Tae Kwon Do) and Soo Bahk Do at the age of 22. At that time, in 1936, he traveled to northern China. There he encountered a Chinese variation of martial artistry called the Tang Method and developed what was to be known as Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan.

Tang Soo Do (Way of The China Hand) Moo Duk Kwan (Institute of Martial Virtue) is not a sport. Though it is not essentially competitive, it has great combat applications. It is a classical martial art, and its purpose is to develop every aspect of the self, in order to create a mature person who totally integrates his intellect, body, emotions, and spirit. This total integration helps to create a person who is free from inner conflict and who can deal with the outside world in a mature, intelligent, forthright, and virtuous manner.

Over the past fifty years, thousands of Americans have studied Tang Soo Do in Korea. Instructors have been sent around the world and there are now major Tang Soo Do organizations in more than 16 countries.

We are members of the following organizations, and our students may obtain cross ranking/certification at our national tournament/event.

United States Goodwill Tang Soo Do Association – www.usgoodwill-tsd.com

The main purpose of the USGTSDA is to benefit the physical and mental health of its members through the development of Tang Soo Do by providing Clinics and Tournaments on a Regional, National and International level. For this purpose, it continually develops the technical skill level of Competitors, Officials, Ring Coordinators, and Event Volunteers.  In addition, it is responsible for setting guidelines, and for sanctioning National and Regional USGTSDA events. Currently, Master Duethorn is the chair of this organization and Master Bogdanski sit on the Senior Advisory Board.

World Dang Soo Do Union

The USGTSDA is a proud member of the World Dang Soo Do Union. The World Dang Soo Do Union is an international organization created by president and founder Choeng Jae Nim Kim, Song Ki (Dan #312). Since many of Choeng Jae Nim Kim, Song Ki's former students have gone on to form many successful independent organizations, Choeng Jae Nim created an organization in which member associations could keep their independence, yet interact and support the growth of traditional Dang Soo Do worldwide. The World Dang Soo Do Union is not a Federation or an Association. As its name implies it is a Union of Federations and Associations. In uniting our intellects we can make traditional Dang Soo Do an even more powerful force among Martial arts. Many people are already a part of great Federation or Association, but are looking for something bigger or even just looking for roots back to Korea. For us, the WDSDU provides this.

We are fortunate to have had Grandmaster Kim attend our USGTSDA events. In addition, Master Bogdanski and Master Duethorn have visited the world headquarters in Song Tan, Korea and Grandmaster Kim has been here to visit and teach at our school. We have also been lucky enough to train with him in Old Saybrook, CT, Coos Bay, Oregon, and in Fayetteville, NC.

Rules, Etiquette and Common Practices of the Dojang. The Korean word for training hall is Dojang. It is more than merely a place of training; it means a place where one seeks to perfect their character and to improve their mind, body and spirit.

A [dojang] is a miniature cosmos where we make contact with ourselves- our fears, anxiety reactions and habits. It is an arena of confined conflict where we confront an opponent who is not an opponent but rather a partner engaged in helping us understand ourselves more fully. It is a place where we can learn a great deal in a short time about who we are and how we react in the world. The conflicts that take place inside the [dojang] help us handle conflicts that take place outside. The total concentration and discipline required to study martial arts carries over to daily life. The activity in the [dojang] calls on us to constantly attempt new things, so it is also a source of learning - in Zen terminology, a source of self-enlightenment.

-From Zen in the Martial Arts

The following information should be studied carefully and instituted to allow each Tang Soo Do practitioner to show proper respect and discipline.

Students must arrive early for class. This will allow sufficient time to stretch out and prepare for class. Furthermore, consistent tardiness shows a lack of attention, respect and discipline. Put your clothing, shoes and equipment neatly in their proper place.

5

Page 6: Personal Notes from Master Bogdanski - questmartialarts.us  · Web viewOur martial arts program provides a comprehensive and unique course encompassing effective karate, judo, aikido,

Please do not wear hats, coats, Ipod etc on the mat while classes are in session. No gum, food, candy should be brought onto the mat. Shoes are not allowed except during a street clothes class. No swearing, negative comments or attitudes are allowed. Respect the Dojang all the time, and it will always be a place where you can learn, grow and find peace.

Students must show respect for their dobok. Your uniform should be clean and neat at all times. Before and after training, uniforms should be folded properly and neatly. Old, smelly, discolored uniforms must be replaced. The introductory uniform is not appropriate for students training at the green level and up.

All students entering the dojang must come to attention, salute the flags, and bow. Upon exiting the dojang, the student should bow then salute the flags. This shows proper respect, loyalty, and patriotism. Do not wear hats, coats, shoes or Ipods onto the training floor.

No talking while the previous class is in session. Keep conversations during class short and to the task at hand. All other conversation should take place in the lobby. If you have a question during class, please raise your hand, stand and bow.

When the class is ordered to line up, each student must quickly find the correct position in class according to their rank and seniority.- six people to a row unless changed by instructor. Attention to seniority must be properly displayed during all training procedures. The first line should set the tone and number six students evenly distributed. ( Balance even in lining up sets the right tone.) Jr. Black Belts line up after child apprentice belts and before adult apprentice belts.

Please make sure you learn the proper way to open and close class. During class a student must always answer with a “Yes Sir or Yes Ma’am”. Also, always address

instructors by their last name or title. Not doing this is disrespectful. If an instructor gives you correction during class you should bow and say Comupsumnida (thank

you). If you need to fix your uniform or belt during class you must turn away from the instructor to do

it. When a student is in a class line, they must ask permission before leaving the line for any

reason. To leave the line, the student must first bow, then step back out of their position - never step forward, and never walk through a formed line of other students. The student must also ask permission to rejoin class before stepping back in to line.

If a student arrives late after class has begun, they must first warm up and stretch out. They are then required to ask the Instructor's permission before formally joining class. Please take the last position in line; do not ask everyone to redress for you. This is your spot for the remainder of the class.

Students should at all times attempt to maintain good discipline in posture. When speaking with a senior or instructor, students should stand at attention, back straight, hands at your sides, and feet together. At all times, an appropriate stance (listening/ready etc) should be held while in class - whether you are standing or sitting. When sitting in class, students must sit with their back straight, legs crossed, and hands resting on their knees - NEVER LOUNGE!!

When there are large groups watching an instruction, the first rows should take a knee so others may see.

6

Page 7: Personal Notes from Master Bogdanski - questmartialarts.us  · Web viewOur martial arts program provides a comprehensive and unique course encompassing effective karate, judo, aikido,

Keep conversations to a minimum- conversation should focus on training topic only. You need to stay focused to get the most out of your time on the floor. You owe it to other students and your instructors to be at your best.

A dobok should not be worn in public places unless for a special event, and permission is given to do so. It is permissible when traveling from classes or demonstrations to wear your dobok pants with a sweatshirt or T-shirt. Never walk around within the dojang with your dobok hanging loose, or your belt untied. This shows extreme lack of respect for yourself and your training area.

Entrance in to an instructor's office should only be done upon permission of the instructor. The student should remain standing at attention, unless the instructor gives permission to be seated.

Students should not train (take a class or private lesson) at other schools or with other instructors without permission. Students should not teach other students or perform demonstrations without permission.

All tasks revolving around events or daily classes should be taken care of by the Junior/Hu bae students. If you have to be asked, it is too late. Senior students and instructors take care of many important task from teaching to running events. Always remember to honor the Jr.(Hu bae) Senior (Sun bae) relationship. It is a two way street based on mutual respect.

It is your responsibility to take care of yourself while training. If you have an injury or issue that prevents you from completing some of the training, please make your instructors aware. Always, step out of activities which might compromise your injury or personal situation. Not everyone who trains is 25 and in perfect condition. We can work around your limitations. You must inform your training partners. Self Defense against injury is your responsibility.

Please remember that some of these customs/traditions/rules come from a culture or way of doing things that is not always familiar and may seem odd or unfamiliar. This is a traditional martial art, and while we have a modern approach to teaching, we incorporate character, integrity, respect and a commitment to honoring the past in a more traditional manner to give us balance. We don’t want to see martial arts go the fast paced way of so much of our world. This list serves as a basic guide, and all students should pay attention to how senior/Sun Bae students behave and incorporate these concepts into practice. Respect to Seniors is very important.

Do Bahk

The uniform that we wear is called a “Do Bahk.” “Do” means “the way” (of life or of martial arts) ; “Bahk” means training garment or robe. The Do Bahk that we wear traces its origins as far back as the sixth century when Korean warriors wore it.

The student uniform consists of a white traditional uniform plus a belt. The belt is an important part of your uniform and must be tied correctly. Parents- please hand this responsibility over to your child right away. A video may be found under the new student section of our website: www.questmartialarts.us. You must wear a complete uniform. No markings are allowed on your uniform except by permission. Your uniform should be kept clean, but you should never

7

Page 8: Personal Notes from Master Bogdanski - questmartialarts.us  · Web viewOur martial arts program provides a comprehensive and unique course encompassing effective karate, judo, aikido,

wash your belt. Philosophically, knowledge resides in your belt, and if you wash it, you will wash the knowledge out! If your uniform is unavailable for whatever reason (having patches sewn on), please come to class anyway. Just wear appropriate clothes.

Students without a clean, neat and well fitting uniform will be given a written warning to solve the issue. Students may be asked not to attend class if the problem is not resolved. The uniform is a big part of martial arts training, respect for it as well as courtesy to fellow students is important.

Uniform Trim:Teens and Adults Only: Colored Trim, Green, Red and Midnight Blue, is worn on the uniform top as a distinction of advanced rank. Green and Red belts shall have trim on the lapels of the jacket. Dan members should have midnight blue trim on the lapels, sleeve cuffs, and around the bottom of the jacket, including the “V” side opening. Apprentice belts do not wear any trim. At this point in their journey towards black belt, they remove their colored trim in order to symbolize their apprenticeship- a return to the beginning of their training, to do basic material with more experience and understanding.

Members of the black belt club wear a patch on the back of their uniforms. This allows instructors to know who is a member of the black belt club. It give these students added distinction. Patch should be placed between the shoulder blades.

Members of the Master’s Club (those who have already received their first degree black belt) will wear navy blue pants in addition to a completely trimmed white top.

Certified Senior Instructors (Kyo Sa Nim, by title) wear all midnight blue uniforms ( Minimum 2nd Dan). They are certified instructors who have completed extra requirements and have completed additional teaching hours and training. Please see them if you have questions about any of our programs.

Special uniforms exist for our all star team demonstrations and for our tournament team members. All participants of these programs must be members of the Black Belt club. (See section in handbook.)

Patches are worn by students in the appropriate location after they have been earned. (see section on earning patches). The black belt instructor from whom they earn the patch will give these patches to the student. Extra patches may be purchased at the front desk. You may not purchase them until you have earned them. The first set is free.

Sewing services are available for both trim and patches. Please be sure you name is on the inside of the uniform. This service is available at the front desk. Please allow up to 10 days for services. There are fees for this service that are paid directly to Mrs. Castonguay. Please wear regular workout clothes to class.

Summer T-Shirts

8

Page 9: Personal Notes from Master Bogdanski - questmartialarts.us  · Web viewOur martial arts program provides a comprehensive and unique course encompassing effective karate, judo, aikido,

All students may wear a school T-shirt- no other- from June 1st to October 1st. All Students except Black Belt club members wear a royal blue shirt. Black Belt Club members wear a red shirt. Black Belts/Dans wear a midnight blue shirt. Instructors wear a burgundy color shirt.. T-shirts must be tucked in. Regular formal uniform tops must be worn to graduation and other formal events We wear school t-shirts and no other in order to create consistency. Martial arts training works bests when everyone looks and is treated the same. You may always wear your traditional do bahk top during the summer. You do not need a t-shirt.

Important: In addition to your uniform, the following guidelines are part of appropriate martial arts dress and decorum. Students will be dismissed from class for not meeting these standards.

- Be sure you uniform is clean and neat, no discoloration, rips or holes should be worn to class. This shows disrespect to the art, your fellow students and yourself.

- On the same line, be sure you wash your uniform after every class. Do not bleach or the patches will bleed and you will have to replace them. Do not wash the belt.

- Be sure your personal hygiene is at its best during karate… wash your body after every class! Please refrain from wearing body sprays etc with heavy/strong odors. Make-up is also not recommended.

- Keep toe and finger nails well trimmed; this is for hygiene and for safety- Keep hands and feet clean. Who wants a partner with dirty hands and feet?- No jewelry of any kind is acceptable in class… again this is for safety.- Long hair must be tied back. No metal clips or hairpieces during class. - No one wants to smell smoke – quit, if not now, when?

Parents: please support us in having high standards. Neat and clean is an important life skill. Again students will be dismissed from class- respect for uniform is respect for school, self, art, and fellow students.

Patches worn on the Uniform

Our students wear the following patches. Some are required by all students while others show involvement in our leadership programs. Please be sure you sew the patch on correctly. We will ask you to remove patches that are on the wrong side, crooked or upside down. A sewing service is available at the front desk; Mrs. Castonguay will sew just patches on a uniform. Extra patches

The earning of patches practices the skill of goal setting, achieving, and recognition. In addition it allows students to understand and practice the concept of meeting requirements by a deadline. If the student does not meet the deadline, he/she will not graduate to the next belt level.

Thus martial arts are not only about developing your physical skills; they are concerned and focused on mentally preparing the individual to handle life as a well developed, mentally capable and character centered human being. The ancient knights of Korea (Hwa Rang) have given us the following creed, tenets and codes and guidelines for our lives.

As martial artists, everyone in our school, students and teachers, does his/her best to live by these concepts/ethics in and out of the Dojang. The Dojang is a great place to work on challenging ourselves in relationship to these principles. None of us has perfected any of them. Martial arts provide the catalyst for all people to work on developing their character.

Tiny Tiger Program- Four Year OldLittle Dragon Program-Five and Six Year Olds

12

Page 13: Personal Notes from Master Bogdanski - questmartialarts.us  · Web viewOur martial arts program provides a comprehensive and unique course encompassing effective karate, judo, aikido,

The purpose of this class is to introduce young children to a group/class activity while simultaneously planting the seed for all of the mental and physical skills taught in the later classes. We teach the very basics of self defense: avoiding dangerous situations and people and making good choices. We realize that cognitively these students are at a different level than the older students.

We also emphasize every day common forms of self defense- using a seat belt, locking your doors, never swimming alone, using sun screen, water safety etc. Most children at this age have had very few “class” activities, if any. We expect this.. and so should you. Please do not expect your tiny tiger or dragon to look or act like the kids in class who have been there for a year. Your child will learn how to behave and respond by looking at those kids with more experience and by listening to their instructors. Some kids take longer than others, again, we expect that at this age.

The Tiny Tigers and Dragon are eligible to graduate every three months after earning their first belt. At green dragon it is a minimum of four months. Students will be held back from earning a promotion for attitude or behavior at home, school, or karate. Basic understanding of the material must also be achieved. Around age seven, we transition students from the dragon class into the children’s class. A black stripe is placed on their belt to let the instructors know they can attend “big” kids class. If you think your child is ready for the children’s class, please let us know.

Most often kids are ready around age seven, but some may be ready earlier. Dragons who move into the children’s class are promoted next to yellow belt; they do not repeat their white belt level. Please do not move your child into the next class on your own or tell them on their seventh birthday they will switch. Please make an appointment with KJN Bogdanski or SBN Duethorn to plan the transition to the next level. Objectives for Tiger/Dragon level are as follows:

Balance Avoiding dangerous situations.

Self Esteem Following Directions

Self Discipline Respect for themselves and others

Release of Energy Learning Healthy Habits

Set goals and work hard Coordination /Exercise

Socialization Self-Confidence

Children’s classes Age 7-11

At this age, students begin to study traditional Tang Soo Do. This includes forms, hand and foot techniques, sparring ( at the advanced belt ranks), and self defenses. They are expected to meet a

detailed list of requirements for each belt level which also includes physical and mental components. Students are asked to show self discipline and act responsibly in many areas of training. The curriculum sheets and study videos are available online at: www.questmartialarts.us. Students who enroll in our black belt club have the opportunity to train ahead in the traditional curriculum as well as in more depth; this program also includes weapons, competition and demonstration classes, as well as extensive resources online. (See black belt club description). Black belt club membership is required to train at the green belt level. It is recommended for blue belts. They will hit a detour at green belt level if they have not started the material needed for advanced level training. We highly emphasize our life skills program with this age student. Teaching and practicing the tenets and codes of Tang Soo Do are a part of the curriculum. Students are expected to have a black belt attitude at school and at home.

TeensOur teens follow the same Tang Soo Do curriculum as adults. However their classes are tailored for their age group. Initially, teens and adult beginners are in the same class. We have found that this benefits both groups. After reaching green belt level, teens have their own classes. We teach the life skills in a way that is accessible to teens by using topics and themes which they confront as young adults. We focus not only on the challenges of being a teen, but also on the advantages of becoming an adult. For this reason, we provide leadership opportunities in class. Many enjoy the opportunity to compete or to be on our demonstration team. In addition, some of our teens have become some of our best instructors. Opportunity for teens to learn the art of teaching comes through membership in the Black Belt Club and its leadership program.

Adult classes:

Adults come to the martial arts for many reasons: to share an activity with their child, to get in shape, to acquire self defense skills, for stress release or even to put a challenge into their adult

life. Our classes are designed with all of the above in mind, and they address an adult’s physicalas well as mental needs. Our classes truly provide an outlet and escape from your regular routine.

Even on days when adult students say they did not want to come to class (busy at work, too much to do at home), they leave feeling better and thankful that they did. Nothing changes your mind and body like a good martial arts class. Our instructors are all mindful of your need to return to work the next day in one piece! Our classes and curriculum are designed so that anyone with the right mindset and willingness to work hard can achieve a Black Belt.

Most of us have limitations to work around, this should not stop you. Black belts are problem solvers not excuse makers. Most of our adult students train twice a week. There are classes in the morning, in the evening and on weekends. Black Belts are white belts who never quit!

Sparring

Sparring is a regular part of the intermediate and higher curriculum. Please be sure you have read and signed a copy of our sparring rules. Due to insurance regulations, it is mandatory

that all students who spar have the following equipment: Mouthpiece, groin protector (male), chest protector (all females and all child and teen boys), hand, feet, and headgear. Please do not underestimate the value of shin guards!!! The more pads the better! All equipment should be bought here at the store as we can best guide you to the appropriate gear for our type of sparring. We will not take back or return gear that was not purchased through us. Please have KJN Bogdanski or SBN Duethorn fit you or your child with gear.

Sparring teaches many skills: timing, distance, humility, and self control. It also provides excellent feedback to students regarding the effectiveness of their techniques. In addition, it tests our courage. We recognize that sparring trains a student to handle adrenaline. This is an important part of martial arts training particularly in connection with our self defense skills. We need this type of physical training.

Students do not spar at our school until they have had practice in the above skills. For children and adults, this means that we introduce sparring at the intermediate level). Red and black belt students have the opportunity to experience various types of sparring; continuous, boxing, kickboxing, and shoot fighting. Advanced students also learn basic ground fighting skills found in jujitsu and Brazilian jujitsu.

Black Belt Club Membership

The black belt club is our advanced training program for those students with long term goals. Members receive unlimited classes, special weekly theme classes, reviews, weapons class and or seminars, discounts on orders for gear and supplies, an embroidered belt with their name on the wall, a black belt patch, a training notebook, and specialized training and material unique to black belt club members. Black Belt Club Members have a special password protected area of our website featuring training videos and numerous handouts which will augment their training. This includes a full set of curriculum sheets to black belt level. Members also have the option to be part of our leadership team, the tournament team or the demonstration team.

If you have achieved the rank of blue belt, and are interested in joining the black belt club, please see Master Bogdanski or Master Duethorn for more information regarding membership, benefits and acceptance qualifications. (There is a packet available with more details: see black belt club information on the website.) After you make your decision, you must write a letter stating your goals for black belt .

Please answer/address the following: Why you want to be in the black belt club? What does martial arts training means to you?Describe the characteristics of someone who earns a black belt? What you like best about karate and hope to achieve by training at an advanced level?

The letter may be typed or handwritten, but it should be neat and well done. After the letter has been read by the senior staff, a decision will be made regarding acceptance. You will receive the acceptance letter in the mail outlining the next steps of

the process. If you are not accepted, we will sit down and create a plan for dealing with the current challenges as we see them.

D.E.L.TA./S.W.A.T- Leadership Programs

These two programs are open to all members of the black belt club who have achieved the rank of blue belt and higher. Our SWAT Program (Special Winning Attitude Team) are students under the age of sixteen who wish to teach and who wish to acquire leadership skills. In addition to training on how to teach, SWAT team members will receive more insight into the curriculum (more detail and more theory); they will also receive leadership coaching.

We will use the martial arts classroom as our focus area, but the skills they learn in dealing with people, leading classes, and being a role model will be applicable to many situations in life. Students must be willing to teach at least one class a week, preferably the same one each week, and attend leadership meetings. Members are also expected to be at school events such as graduations and social events.. Leaders within the SWAT program will be given special roles within the school. Students will also be able to apply for paid staff positions once they are old enough. (It is a great job for a teenager). The DELTA (Dedicated, Enthusiastic, Loyal, Teaching, Assistant) Program is a leadership program for students 16 and up. Due to their age, they can receive more training and take on more responsibility within the school. The program is for under black belts of all ages, (Moms and Dads too). Many of our great instructors started here. Talk to any of them about their teaching experience. They will all tell you that there was no better way to prepare for black belt than by being a DELTA team member. In addition, they receive martial arts training beyond the basic curriculum.

Demonstration Team

To be a member of the all star demonstration team, you must be a member of the black belt club. Our demonstration season runs from June to October, although some members of the team may perform at special functions throughout the year.

Demo Team members are a part of our student body who make direct contact with the public; therefore, acceptance and continued membership on the team is heavily based on the impression and example you set for others. The Demonstration team has a lot of fun working towards demos, learning exciting material, and just bonding as a group. Students get the opportunity to challenge themselves in new ways.. this is a lot of hard work but it has many rewards. The Demo team is open to all black belt club members.. all ages and ranks. (adults welcome!.. it is a fun way to challenge yourself, play with your kid, be a kid .. or even be a star.)

If you know someone who would like to have us perform at an event, please contact Master Bogdanski or Duethorn at the school and we will check our calendar. The summer fills up fast.

16

Page 17: Personal Notes from Master Bogdanski - questmartialarts.us  · Web viewOur martial arts program provides a comprehensive and unique course encompassing effective karate, judo, aikido,

Students please remember that you may not demonstrate your karate at a public event without prior permission. This is the proper etiquette and respect to be shown to your school and instructors.

Tournament Team

Every year we pick a few good tournaments for our students to attend. ( In addition to our own school tournament) In order to best prepare our students, we will hold practice and training sessions for people wishing to join the team. You are not obligated to participate in all of the tournaments. The season generally runs from January-June with some practices in December. Please see Master Bogdanski or Master Duethorn for more detailed information. There are many benefits to participating in a tournament including: test of courage, test of skills, making new friends, being competitive, experiencing pride in yourself and your school, and practicing humility and good sportsmanship.

Student Evaluations and Promotions

Each month our students are evaluated on their progress through the T.I.P. - Training, Incentive Program. Each month we use a different color to denote which students have been seen by us. Please note that stripe requirements are listed as minimums, not guarantees of promotion. As a student progresses, expectations will increase and all areas of the curriculum must be addressed. Each month has a set of physical and mental requirements. In addition, the intermediate and advance classes have a sparring requirement and minimum class attendance. The “Promotion Guidelines” section of the handbook has more details. The individual monthly curriculum sheets are online under “Online University.”

When the testing instructor sees that the student is ready, the student will be invited to attend the next graduation ceremony. In addition, feedback from home and school must reflect a black belt attitude. Stripe evaluations are generally the last week of the month (except months with holiday conflicts). Graduation is on Friday night at 6:30 where possible. Please consult the monthly online calendar for changes and updates. If you cannot attend graduation, please notify the Master instructors.

You will be allowed to graduate Saturday or Monday evening only.If you miss stripe evaluations, you may be evaluated by private appointment for which there will be a charge or wait until the next evaluation time. We simply cannot conduct evaluations all month long and teach. Thank you for your understanding here.

Cumulative exams are given when a student is changing levels. Most students need some feedback here and time to make corrections. Please make an appointment to see us after you are promoted to a new training level. (beginner to intermediate, intermediate to advanced, etc)

Once your child reaches the intermediate class and the instructors have a greater sense of their potential, stripe testing will become more subjective. Please do not compare the height or your

child’s kick or the speed of a punch to another child in their class; strengths and challenges varying among individuals, and as a “life skills focused school,” we are looking to challenge the individual student in reaching their best effort. The outcome for each child will be different. Also, we are sometimes working on goals at home or school with a particular child, and this may change some of what we are looking for.

It is our goal to provide a unique transformative experience for each student. While consistency is important, it can also limit our ability to directly answer the needs of each student. Please support us in our decisions with your child. We have been doing this over 20 years. We understand they may be disappointed with our decision, this is a life skill as well.

Please Read Carefully: Assume from the beginning, that there will be points in your child’s or your martial arts experience where there is struggle/challenge. (not graduating for example)Learning to pick yourself up from a setback is a very important life skill. We all know it happens in real life.

The Dojang is a safe place for us deal with disappointment, to be challenged and to be confronted with the truth about who we are. Most of the adults who take class, and all of the instructors will tell you that this is where the real value of martial arts rests. On a daily basis, think how often you have to use your character versus your fighting skills….

Please remember that private lessons are available. See private lesson section of handbook.Fees include belt and certificate at the Gup level. The Dan level includes workshops and testing day fees.

Graduation Fees: There is a fee for each belt test of 20.00 Jr. Black Black 125.00

Guide To Graduation

Each belt level has different requirements in terms of skills and time needed to learn the material.  They get longer and more defined as the student progresses. At the white belt level, we are merely looking to reward the student for being a good martial arts student.  (They are on time to class, they are trying to learn the basic etiquette, they follow directions, they attempt the material with a good attitude etc.)  The awarding of the yellow belt, adult orange belt , tiger or orange dragon is strictly attitude and effort based. Please do not be measuring any physical skills at this point. We are a life skills school, and we want to reward this path first and foremost. The physical skills will follow. (Just come to any black belt graduation and witness the end product for yourself.)Students will be invited to graduate by receiving a Home Evaluation form and invitation with the date, time and fee for graduation. School Evaluations will be done at level change or if requested.   After all we are looking for students to have a black belt attitude at home, at school and at karate.  (Again, the life skills are the same across all three locations.. and the emphasis is on them, not the kicking and punching)

18

Page 19: Personal Notes from Master Bogdanski - questmartialarts.us  · Web viewOur martial arts program provides a comprehensive and unique course encompassing effective karate, judo, aikido,

The Home Evaluation is our way of getting feedback from home and school.  In addition, we ask that parents write 1-3 sentences on the back of the form that we may choose to read at graduation. You should direct this to your child and his or her accomplishments. Negative comments will not be read. Also use this form to communicate anything you want us to address with your child. Challenges and feedback to us are welcome here. We do want to hear what we do well and what we need to do better or anything that may help us work with your child.   Graduation generally starts at 6:30 and is held on a Friday night when possible. Exceptions are holiday weekends.  Please be there early.  We have a number of students and we want to check them in so that we can double check our list. Parking can be tough... so again please come early and feel free to park at the Aspinock Historical Society or on Bolles Street itself. Please check in at the desk and pay your graduation fee if you have not done so. The format changes depending on the size of the graduation.  You should plan on being there at

least an hour. We will dismiss the younger kids early if the graduation is going to be long.  Feel

free to stay.. a lot of great stuff goes on at the end.. board breaking, sparring and self defenses..

Camouflage belts are for 3 and 4 year olds; our tiny tigers. The white belts with the colored stripes down the center are for 5 and 6 year olds/ our little dragons.  Some 6 year olds are promoted to solid yellow if they are close to 7 or their skill level is high.  All Tiger and Dragon belts wrap around the body once.  This way they can learn to tie their own belts, and they are more comfortable for them.  If a belt does not fit, please take it to the front desk and we will exchange it.  Students may bring as many guests as they like to graduation.  Try to carpool to save on parking please.  Parent and friends may sit all around the mat during graduation. Please take off your shoes! Cameras are welcome and encouraged at graduation.  Come to the front to snap pictures when your child is graduating and demonstrating. Photos with instructors after the graduation are also encouraged. You can help your child ahead of time by reminding them that they have already passed the test. They are just coming for a celebration; they will do their karate, but no one will fail that night for making a mistake or being nervous.  Applaud often as this is a big moment for them.  Please keep all siblings and young friends off the performance area of the mat. Sparring and self defenses done by graduates can be dangerous to a toddler wandering on the mat.  The people graduating or demonstrating are not thinking about them when they are nervous and excited.  Talking should be kept to necessary comments only! Please keep non- karate kids off of all equipment, hanging bags etc.

If you cannot make it to graduation, we will graduate you or your child on Saturday am or Monday night. No other times will be allowed Students who do not attend graduation night may not make the publication of the graduation list due to deadlines.

Karate Membership Explanations:

In an attempt to meet a variety of budgets and needs, we offer a few membership options. However, it is important that you clearly understand the differences within each option. Here are a couple of frequently asked questions:

Are there discounts? Yes, discounts are offered for Paid in Full memberships, family member discounts, and reduced attendance memberships. Students may opt during a busy sports season, for example, to drop their membership to once a week. Also for some Tigers and Dragons, once a week is also appropriate.

.What happens if we decide not to complete our membership?

All monthly memberships are cancellable with 30 days notice. No reason needed. ***All payments due during the 30 days will be collected.

***If you have paid in full and taken a discount to do so, that money will not be refunded to you.

What if my child or myself is absent for a long family vacation?

If you take an extended family trip for a month or more, we will extend your membership for that time period. This can be done once in a membership year.. Please do not contact the school and ask for time added on for illnesses or short vacations. It is unreasonable for us to keep track of this. It affects our insurance coverage. A policy that is clear and without too many options, allows us to treat everyone more fairly. Obviously extenuating circumstances will always be considered, and Master Duethorn will work with each student individually to make sure membership is fair. Our goal it to be professional and consistent, not inflexible. In some cases, additional time will be added.

Changes to all memberships must be made in writing via our change in membership form. No exceptions. The same is true for all cancellations.

Class ScheduleWe regularly change our schedule twice a year: September and July. For July and August we drop down to five days of classes a week. We also change the flavor of the classes during the summer… after all most of the students attend all year and the change in routine is good for them. The class schedule is available in the lobby or online. We would also change the schedule to accommodate a change in our school population. (ie: 20 new Tigers and Dragons may warrant a new class)

20

Page 21: Personal Notes from Master Bogdanski - questmartialarts.us  · Web viewOur martial arts program provides a comprehensive and unique course encompassing effective karate, judo, aikido,

At times we change the regular schedule to host special events or simply to offer a specialty class, or attend a community event. These are listed in the newsletter for each month and are sent out via our weekly email. If you are not receiving this email, please sign up on the website. We try very hard to have our schedule done three months in advanced. Please note that not all Fridays and Saturdays have BBC Classes. Also classes will be cancelled twice a year for Black Belt Testing- generally on Saturday.

Yearly Calendar:

We will be open 48 weeks a year to teach our students. We will take three complete weeks off during the year. The first being the week between Christmas and New Year’s and the second being around the 4th of July. We will also take a week off for Spring Vacation at some point in April. This depends on the calendar, but will be published each January for the upcoming year. In addition, we close for major holidays and a few other “conflicting” days.. Like Halloween.. not a major holiday.. but no one comes to class! Please check your monthly newsletter and email in addition to the yearly calendar. We are always closed Memorial Day and Labor Day weekend.

Class CancellationsPlanned cancellations will be on the event calendar with reminders sent in the weekly email; this is normally for special events. We also have to cancel a few evening classes the night of graduation or for black belt testing twice a year; this varies according to the month. In addition, we may have to cancel class due to snow. We try hard to stay open when we can and will teach with a smaller staff on some of those nights. However, we are not going to endanger any of our young driving teen staff or our students to hold classes. Please call ahead and check WINY 1350 AM for cancellations. Our facebook has immediate information regarding this.

AttendanceSince the school operates on a rotating curriculum, it is important that every student has consistent class attendance. Belt testing is a real test, and students will not be passed along without meeting the requirements. There are better times than others to take a week off from training, we all need these once in a while… Please ask your instructors for help with this.

Also, if you are running into obstacles with your training that include attendance, please let us know and we will try and help you; we have done it for many people and we have some good suggestions. Overcoming obstacles and experiencing the exhilaration of victory is one of the ways we teach our students how to build the life skills of self discipline, confidence and perseverance.Private lessons can help a student get back on track or receive extra training.Swiping in for class in your responsibility and is very important. We need this for insurance, for telling us how many classes you have attended and to hire instructors. It is not the responsibility of the front desk to check you in… they are very busy. Second cards are not available on our system, however, a high quality copy can be laminated and used. Do not be upset if you are held back from graduating due to attendance.

Dropping off studentsTiny Tigers and Dragons should have a parent on premises at all times. (please see us if there is a conflict with this.. like having to drop another kid off at soccer practice ) Older students may

attend class without parents; however, you must leave an emergency number or cell phone number at the desk. Also, your child may not leave the building alone to find your car unless they are in the teen class. All other children must be picked up from the dojang. Failure to comply with these rules will revoke the privilege of leaving your child.

Private LessonsPrivate instruction is available to all students. Please see Master Bogdanski or Master Duethorn if you are interested. Private lessons may be taken for a number of reasons: missed classes, extra review, tuning up a specific skill that is alluding you, wanting to spend more time on something you like and do well, faster learning or you just learn better that way. You may also make up a stripe testing in this time.

We have students who take two or three private lessons a month; they are not just for people who are struggling, but also for those who want a challenge. It is your time, you can choose how to spend it. There is an extra charge for formal private lessons. If you are interested in having an advanced student give you some extra help; we can arrange that for you as well. Sometimes all you need is fifteen minutes before class. Small group or semi private lessons are also available.

Social EventsOur school is more than just a martial arts training facility. Over time, we become friends who enjoy spending time inside and outside of the school. We hold a number of annual events which give us the opportunity to get together just for fun. All members of the school are invited and beginners are encouraged to attend. If you ask any of our long time students what they like best about the martial arts, most of them will say the friendships they have made influence them to stay training.

Annual Awards Banquet: Once a year, the school holds its annual awards banquet to celebrate the past year’s accomplishment. We look at the year in review (through speeches and photos) , we recognize achievement through our special awards, and every student receives an individual certificate recognizing their strength. This is a formal event, including a social hour, dinner, awards and dancing. Tickets are sold in advanced and there is a cut off date for reservations. This is our one time to get together and show off our party clothes. You will be surprised how different some of us look!Halloween Party: This has become our largest social event, and is held every year within two weeks of Halloween. The costumes are great! The food is frightening! There are awards for all kinds of costumes. Games and activities are planned for adults and children. (practice your limbo). If you are interested in helping plan this event, watch your newsletter for information. This is a fun and safe way to celebrate this holiday. No karate costumes allowed!

School Tournament: During the winter we hold an in house school competition for all of our students. It is held at another local venue. We practice the skills of competition the month prior: courage, humility and good sportsmanship. The event is our opportunity to practice these skills.

Gym MembershipsDiscounted Gym memberships are available to all karate students, parents and spouses at a discount. For parents and adult students this includes 24 hour access. Please ask for information at the front desk. You have a responsibility as you get closer to black belt to make sure your

Children’s Classes-General Belt Promotion Information

A completed Home Evaluation sheet must be completed PRIOR to a student earning his stripe. It is the responsibility of the student to get this sheet completed. Parents, it is your responsibility to go over your evaluation with your child. School Evaluations are required for promotion between class levels. Stripes are given at the end of each month and reflect that the student has been seen by the instructor that month. Yellow stripes are given when a student is not attending enough classes or needs to retest on the material. It is the responsibility of the student to study, practice and ask for the retest. The class will move on to the next rotation. Please have your student practice push ups and sit ups as their home training. Finally, only students who are members of the black belt club may take Green level classes. At this point, students are a year away from testing for their Jr. Black Belt and need to have this commitment and the ability to take review classes. We would like to have a meeting with parents and students during the transition to the green level.

Test for Jr. Black Belts are given twice a year. Each student will be placed in a graduation cycle when they are ready.

Special Note: Please do not ask for exceptions for class minimum due to vacation, other activities etc. All of these events are important, and your child should do them. However, time in class is time in class, and will not be waived for other activities. We need to maintain the integrity of the program. Time missed may only be made up through private instruction. Also a child may be held back from promotion to the next level if they are physically or emotionally not ready to handle the intensity and demands of the next class.

Other special situations:

Only a Dragon Belt with a Black Stripe given by a lead teacher may enter the children’s class. Please do they will graduate to a solid Yellow Belt when they have successfully made the transition to the class. They will be grouped with the white belts until that point.

One time a week student will wear a yellow stripe on their belt on the right side. Please note that students who attend once a week will take longer to graduate. If students would like to train at a faster pace, they may supplement their training with a private lesson once a month. This is a good option for students who have multiple commitments.
