Should I do it? “I don’t really know if I want to or not, I mean if I want to stay in shape I can just lift after school and go on a run every once and a while.” I told Eric as we were walking to the track meeting. It was my freshmen year of high school, and I was debating weather I wanted to run track or not. I had run track since 4 th grade but really wasn’t feeling it in high school. My dad really wanted me to run and reminded me every day of that. My brain told me no but my heart told me not to miss my chance. So I decided to follow my heart. I went to the meeting, and we started practice the vary next day. After school I went to the locker room, put my stuff up, and went up to the track to start practice. The coaches told us to split up into groups (sprinters, long distance, and throwers) and we got started. Me being with the sprinters went on a little run that was only about a mile but seemed to last a while. The whole time I was thinking “why did I do this?” After practice I was debating weather to quit or keep with it. I thought “What is this going to make me look like? Just go to the first practice then quit? Im not a quitter!” so I keep with it. After a couple weeks of practice our first track meet was coming up. It was on a Thursday, 3/29/12 at Central high school. It was only a freshmen/sophomore meet but it meant a lot. It was the decision in staying with track was a good thing or not. In the long jump I jumped 16’4 and in the 4x2 we ran a 1:40. We also had an alright time in the 4x1. In the end it wasn’t a bad track meet. My team and I place 2 nd in both the 4x1 and 4x2. I figured it wasn’t a bad meet considering it was the first of the season. On Wednesday, the day before are first varsity track meet Coach Kimble sat the team down to tell us who all was going. Not even thinking my name would be called, it was called three times. Aaron wright: long jump, 4x1, 4x2. What really surprised me was that are 4x2 team is 3 freshmen and a sophomore. I knew we were a young team but I wasn’t expecting this. As the season went on I just got better and better. Are 4x2 team went from running a 1:40 at Central to running a 1:37.08 at the Cardinal Relays and placing in most varsity track meets we were in. I went from jumping a 16’4 in my first track meet to a 17’11 at Maryville and placing in a few varsity meets this season. Me as well as two other freshmen boys got enough points to receive our varsity letter at the end of the season. When its all said and done we had a heck of a season. Coach Kimble said “you guys are going to do some really great things in a few years and I cant wait to see it.”, and to be honest I cant wait either.
