Information About the Painting•Persistence of Memory•Painting is by Salvador Dali•Painted in 1931•It is an oil on canvas•It is displayed in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City•Location of origin s Spain•Style is surrealism
Literal MeaningI think the literal meaning of this painting is that there are clocks melting. One clock is melting onto a branch or plant like figure, another is melting and sliding off a block or table, and the third one is melting on a horse like creature that is laying on a black platform. In the background, there seems to be water and a rising sun. I also noticed that the ground gets lighter as it goes deeper into the background of this painting. There is also a cliff hanging over the water with different shadows in it.
Suggested MeaningI think the suggested meaning is that time is going by fast. It is a world of confusion and people are lost in time. Also, time is melting over the horse like creature and killing it. The picture shows a beautiful landscape and I think means that people don’t have time to notice the nature and world around them because they are so caught up in time.
