Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

One of my favorite Christian authors, Frederich Buechner, wrote:

Your life and my life flow into each other as wave flows into wave, and unless there is peace and joy and freedom for you, there can be no real peace or joy or freedom for me. To see reality – not as we expect it to be but as it is – is to see that unless we live for each other and in and through each other, we do not really live very satisfactorily; that there can really be life only where there really is, in just this sense, love. (From The Magnificent Defeat)

I chose this quote to be included in the readings at my marriage to David because it is a beautiful description of human interdependence. In the weeks leading up to the Holy Union service, I read this passage many times, and each time I couldn’t help but think about the many people whose lives have flowed into mine over the years. I was reminded that there is no such thing as a “self-made” man or woman. In the Epistle reading for October 19, 2014, St. Paul reflects on his relationship with the Thessalonian Christians and echoes the same sentiment: We always give thanks to God for all of you and mention you in our prayers, constantly remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ (I Thessalonians 1:2-3).

I believe an essential element of Christian discipleship and one of the tasks of the Church is the act of remembering, celebrating, and thanking God for those who have loved and still love us – those who have instructed us in the faith, both in word and example, and those whose manner of life have instilled in us a deep, abiding hope in the promises of God. In so doing, we come to understand that we really do “live for each other, and in and through each other.”

In this booklet are the names of people we remember before God and to each other this year. Some of them are still living among us; some are now experiencing a fuller life in God. On All Souls’ Day, we remember, celebrate, and give thanks for each one of them. They have made our lives fuller and richer. They have shown us something of the grace of God and remind us of the challenge given us to pass along to those who come after us the gifts of faith, hope, and love.

With gratitude,Fr. Steve

Dear Fellow Parishioners,

I have a fondness for saints. Those holy people who better the world, teach us, and are the hands and feet of God in the world. I love reading their stories and reflecting on their gifts. Some stories are dramatic and lend themselves stunning graphics (St. Sebastian). Others are stories of their kindness to those less fortunate (St. Nicholas and St. Francis of Assisi). Others are known for their vivid religious visions (St. Hildegard of Bingen). All of the saints have something they can teach us. And their stories can help guide us. It reminds me of a line from the hymn “I Sing a Song of the Saints of God” we sometimes sing on All Saints’ Sunday. After listing descriptions of several saints, the first verse ends, “God help me to be one, too.”

While the stories of the saints can be dramatic and can be a bit daunting to try to emulate, there are saints all around us. And we have remembered many of them through the Perpetual Memorial. There are those who have served St. Peter’s faithfully for years and have offered their fellow parishioners their time, good cheer, and often a good meal. There are those we love but see no longer, whose gifts to us have encouraged us to give. There are those who are new to our lives, but whose arrival brings us great joy. These everyday saints show us God’s continuing love of us.

The Perpetual Memorial gives us the opportunity to give tangible thanks to those who have touched our lives. And those remembered here continue to touch our lives whether on a daily basis or through a cherished memory. Let us celebrate the patron saints of coffee hour, the patron saints of hospitality, and these patron saints of Christian formation. And God help me to be one, too.

Yours in Christ,Qiana

Dear St. Peter’s Members, Family and Friends, The trust and management of the Perpetual Memorial is a solemn financial responsibility for the leaders of the parish. As the Stewardship Chair and Finance Chair, we are happy to share with you the positive financial performance that contributions and remembrances have enjoyed in the past year. With the consent of the Vestry, the Perpetual Memorial funds have been invested in a blend of investment instruments that balance our desire to protect the principal of the fund while consistently growing the value of the investments made. While aggressive, our investments are not needlessly reckless or risky. While recent days have shown us a how volatile a short-term market can be, we are confident that we are well invested and managed for the long term and that we will continue to see growth year over year in value. It is also important to note that no interest or dividends are currently being taken from memorial investments. Contributions are held in a savings account segregated from parish operating funds. When this account reaches a balance of at least $7,500, funds are transferred to an investment account that is also segregated from other parish investment funds. While allowed to take gains or dividends from these investments, we did not do so in 2014 and will not in 2015. The principal of the fund cannot be spent, and the appreciation cannot be spent, until the fund reaches a balance of $1 million. Our strategy is to return any gains to the fund until it reaches a balance of $500,000. If you have any question regarding the management of the Perpetual Memorial, please feel free to contact either one of us. Sincerely, Mick Wilson, Finance ChairRobert Rupp, Stewardship Chair

The St. Peter’s Episcopal Church Perpetual Memorial Third Annual Report

The Feast of All SoulsNovember 2, 2014

The minister of the congregation is directed to instruct the people, from time to time, about the duty of Christian parents to make prudent provision for the well-being of their families, and of all persons to make wills, while they are in health, arranging for the disposal of their temporal goods, not neglecting, if they are able, to leave bequests

for religious and charitable uses.

Page 445, Book of Common Prayer

DO I NEED A WILL OR ESTATE PLAN EVEN IF I AM YOUNG, HEALTHY, AND OF LIMITED MEANS?Yes, for several reasons: (a) the Book of Common Prayer calls it a “duty”; (b) there are tax benefits to planning your estate; (c) you can structure your estate plan to leave charitable gifts; (d) having a plan will give your family peace; and (e) if you don’t make an estate plan, the State of Illinois has one for you – and you might not like the way it distributes your assets!

WHY SHOULD I INCLUDE ST. PETER’S IN MY WILL OR ESTATE PLAN?This is one last chance to support the mission and ministry of St. Peter’s, to take part in the life of the church even past your death, and to be a witness to your friends and family as they find out about your bequest.

HOW COULD I INCLUDE A CHARITABLE GIFT IN My ESTATE PLAN?You could bequeath a monetary amount, a percentage of your assets, securities, real or personal property, or the “rest and residue” of your estate. You could also name St. Peter’s as a life insurance beneficiary or establish a trust.

WHO CAN HELP ME ARRANGE SUCH A GIFT?It is important to speak with an attorney, accountant, insurance agent, or financial planner about leaving a gift.

WHAT WILL ST. PETER’S DO WITH A CHARITABLE GIFT IN MY ESTATE PLAN?St. Peter’s invests all unrestricted bequests and estate plan gifts in St. Peter’s Perpetual Memorial (“SPPM”). The principal will never be spent, and the income will be used for (a) building maintenance, (b) capital improvement, and (c) staff development and retention.

DO I NEED TO TELL THE CHURCH IF I LEAVE A GIFT FOR IT IN MY PLAN?It is up to you. St. Peter’s would like to thank you for your generosity and to honor your gift by enrolling you in the Legacy Society.

MAY I MAKE A GIFT TO THE SPPM DURING MY LIFETIME?Of course! Gifts in honor or memory of loved ones are always received gratefully. To enroll a loved one, you may use the form in this book or seek one from the parish office.

DOES ST. PETER’S HAVE ANY RESOURCES FOR PLANNING MY AFFAIRS?St. Peter’s provides an excellent free resource, the Life Planning Manual, which is available in paper form in the parish office and available online at http://stpeterschicago.org/page/planned_giving. From wills and trusts to fu-neral planning to life insurance to advanced directives, the Life Planning Manual will provide you with everything you need to live – and die – with peace of mind.

About St. Peter’s Perpetual Memorial

What is the SPPM?The SPPM is an endowment fund (1) for all bequests to St. Peter’s, (2) for all memorials given to the church at the time of a person’s death, and (3) for specially designated gifts of thanksgiving.

Each year on All Souls’ Day (November 2), a book is published listing the names of (a) people in whose honor gifts have been made, in all years; (b) people who’ve include St. Peter’s in their estate plans; (c) people whose be-quests have been realized; and (d) people who have donated to the SPPM that year.

The SPPM is invested for growth, in the hope that it will grow large enough someday to pay for building mainte-nance, to provide capital improvement funding, and to supplement staff development. Reaching that goal will free St. Peter’s to devote 100 percent of its annual pledge budget to mission and ministry!

So Why Have This SPPM?The SPPM is designed to be a clear, consistent, durable thanksgiving program, and a clear, consistent, durable planned giving program.

A Thanksgiving Program: Donors – or groups of donors working together – may make an initial gift of $100 or more in honor of someone dear. After the initial donation, gifts in any amount may be added to that dear per-son’s endowment.

A Planned Giving Program: All unrestricted bequests are added to the SPPM, so that donors can be confident that if they remember St. Peter’s in their estate plans, their gifts will be wisely invested to support St. Peter’s for decades to come.

How Does the SPPM Work?Thanksgiving: To give in someone’s honor, a person or several people should fill out an enrollment form and either donate a minimum of $100 (for a new endowment) or any amount (for an existing endowment). The honored person’s name will then be published each year in the All Souls’ publication, showing how much has been given for him or her over time. Additionally, memorials that are given to St. Peter’s at the time of death, regardless of size, enroll a person in the SPPM.

Planned Giving: Include a provision like this in your will:

I give, devise and bequeath to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Chicago, Illinois, (percent of my estate) or (a specific sum of money) or a (description of property) or (the rest, residue, and remainder of my estate) to be used for its general tax-exempt purposes and without other restrictions as to use.

On your death, whatever the size of the bequest, you will be enrolled in the SPPM.

For more information, feel free to speak with Fr. Steve or Levi S. Harris.

About St. Peter’s Legacy Society

What is the Legacy Society?St. Peter’s Legacy Society is simply a group of people who have said to the church, “I have included St. Peter’s in my estate plan.” We operate on the honor system, so if you fill out an enrollment form saying you qualify as a Legacy Society member, we’ll take you at your word.

Each year, the names of the Legacy Society members will be printed in our All Souls’ Day publication. Additionally, one or two events will be held each year to celebrate their special commitment to honor God and live into the call of the Book of Common Prayer by remembering the church in their wills.

Why Have a Legacy Society?Simple: to honor and celebrate the people who have remembered the church in their estate plans while they are still here to celebrate right along with us! Once bequests are realized, it is too late to tell people, “Thank you so much for the contribution you made to carrying out God’s work in the life of this church.” So why wait? With the Legacy Society, the parish can thank people for these acts of transcendent generosity in the here-and-now.

How Do I Join the Legacy Society? The first step, of course, is to get a will or other estate plan in place in which you make provision to remember St. Peter’s. If you believe you already meet the criteria for membership, then fill out one of the enclosed enrollment forms and return it to Fr. Steve or Levi Harris, and you’ll be added to the list. And be sure to come to the Eucharist for All Souls’ Day, after which we will celebrate the Legacy Society with a special reception.
