MSGR. TOM DAVIS- FIFTY YEARS OF BEING A PRIEST FOREVER!

How did Rev. Msgr. Thomas Anthony Davis and his brother, Father Noel Davis, end up in the Lone Star state? “At that time, the bishops from the United States would visit the seminaries [in Ireland] and ask the students to sign on for their diocese,” explained Msgr. Davis. “Bishop (Thomas Joseph) Drury, being an Irish bishop, came to our seminary and I signed on for him for the Diocese of San Angelo. He was later transferred to Corpus Christi and so I followed him to the Diocese of Corpus Christi.” However, for Msgr. Davis becoming a diocesan priest wasn’t necessarily his first vocation. “My first desire was to live in a monastery as a monk and it was only when I went to the monastery and became a monk that then God called me to the priesthood,” Msgr. Davis said. “So I came out of the monastery and went down to the

seminary and then became a priest. But my first vocation was to become a monk in a monastery and my second vocation was to be a priest.” How did these desires to serve God and his people foster into vocations for Msgr. Davis? The Davis family lived in New York and his parents bore the two oldest children in the United States. His parents returned to their homeland to live on a farm in Tipperary in the south of Ireland. Msgr. Davis was born on the Visitation of Mary on May 31, 1933. He was the first to be born in Ireland and is the third of nine children, with five other boys and three girls comprising the Davis family. As a young boy, Msgr. Davis was introduced to the perils of war.

“My childhood was during the second world war when food was scarce and there was rationing in Ireland,”

Msgr. Davis explained. “We made our own bread and butter and grew our own vegetables. So we really had a happy

home life and didn’t feel the effects that the war had on other people.” Outside of World War II, his childhood was that of a

normal Irish lad. “My favorite games growing up were handball, hurling – which is an Irish game somewhat like

hockey – soccer, hunting, mountain climbing and cycling,” Msgr. Davis recalled. And he also had his favorite foods.

“The one I liked best was the soda bread with the homemade butter, mashed potatoes with lots of vegetables and

sometimes a little bacon or beef from our own farm.” It was the farm life that helped Msgr. Davis greater appreciate his

family who indelibly shaped his faith formation. “I have great memories of walking in the cornfields, in the meadows in the

cold summer evenings with my parents and all my other siblings,” Msgr. Davis reminisced. “It was a real family outing.

We prayed the rosary every day, had holy pictures in every room and attended Mass every Sunday. Religion was part

of daily life in the Davis home.” His first introduction to the monastic lifestyle came at early age as the Davis clan visited

a Trappist Monastery that was less than an hour from their farm. They made frequent visits there and they had an

impact on young Tom Davis. “I fell in love with the monastery and wanted to enter as soon as possible, which was when

I became independent at 21 years of age,” he further explained. Msgr. Davis believes that his family’s lifestyle also

prepared him for a life of solitude. “Growing up on the farm gave me a lot of time out in the niche, out in nature all by

myself. I grew up loving silence and solitude,” said Msgr. Davis. “It was an atmosphere that promoted prayer

and contemplation.” Eventually, Msgr. Davis realized that a monastic lifestyle was not for him. After spending

numerous years at the monastery, he decided that his calling was for the priesthood. “I was in the seminary during

the years of Vatican II, the Second Vatican Council, and that meant that we did a

lot of our studies through Latin,” Msgr. Davis began. “I was also 10 years older than

most of my fellow seminarians. It was a very spiritual and happy experience for me.”

Upon concluding his formation, Msgr. Davis was ordained at St. Kieran’s

College in Kilkenny, Ireland, on June 9, 1968, by Bishop Peter Birch. Soon thereafter,

Msgr. Davis landed in America and began his vocation of service to others

that would span more than four decades. Initially, Msgr. Davis enrolled in

a 10-week course that taught Spanish at the then Mexican American

FIFTY YEARS OF BEING A PRIEST FOREVER

“That was during my first year in the United States,” explained Msgr. Davis. “The rest of my Spanish was learned through on-the-job training.” Empowered with a new language, the Irish-born priest began serving Catholics throughout South Texas and Mexico. “I served at five different parishes over the years,” Msgr. Davis recalled. “I served at St. Anthony Parish in Robstown for eight years, then at San Isidro in Arteaga, Mexico, for two years, followed by Mother Cabrini Parish in Laredo for six years, then San Agustín for 12 years and now at St. Patrick’s Parish for the last 13 years.” Through the years, Msgr. Davis undertook numerous endeavors that made a positive impact on the lives of many. A few stand out among his favorites, including

the Desert Apostolate. “The desert missions were established in 1985 in the state of Coahuila near the Big Bend area in Texas and they are about an eight-hour drive from Nuevo Laredo,” said Msgr. Davis. “We’ve been going there now for the past 25 years. A group goes in for 10 days to two weeks to serve the people and bring the sacraments. Sometimes we bring food and clothes. We’ve seen great results and great progress in the 23 missions of the desert apostolate.” He credits Polo Ramirez as the individual who has spearheaded and maintained the vitality of the desert missions. “Polo is the chauffer and does most of the work,” Msgr. Davis gratefully acknowledged. His most memorable experience in the desert missions was celebrating Mass for the miners and their families. “Offering Mass inside a mine down 800 meters below the ground level with the miners present and their families,” Msgr. Davis described. “We did this on the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe every year with Mass at 6 a.m. Usually, the whole mountain is covered with snow and it’s pretty cold place.” The crowning achievement in his 41 years as a priest came recently, but was many years in the making. “When I was serving at Mother Cabrini Parish, a group of us would go every Saturday morning for six years to pray outside the old abortion clinic. This continued with another group for the next 14 years after I left Mother Cabrini,” explained Msgr. Davis. “Then, I was helping out at the old Mercy (hospital) for many years and when the new building was being planned, I was in on the planning and I did ask for a chapel to be included where we could have adoration. My idea was perpetual adoration in the hospital but that did not turn out to be possible. “When I came to St. Patrick’s Parish,” he continued, “we had the golden opportunity to make a very special adoration chapel and the people were very responsive. We opened the adoration chapel at St. Patrick’s in the year 2003 and the people organized it themselves, along with the teams, the leaders and the captains. That very same year the abortion clinic was closed down. I believe it was greatly due to all the prayers of those 20 years of rosaries and marching manifesting our respect for life. From that time until now, we’ve had a great response to our desire for perpetual adora-tion.” Personally, the Gospel and spiritual readings have always been a mainstay for Msgr. Davis during good and difficult times. “In 1993, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer and during my recuperation I had the opportunity to read the diary of Sister Faustina,” Msgr. Davis shared. “I began to realize the importance of the devotion to the Divine Mercy. At that moment, I was also experiencing the Divine Mercy in my own life through a very powerful recovery from the aggressive cancer. It was my miraculous cure from cancer. I’ve been free from cancer for the last 15 years and I’ve maintained a strong devotion to the Divine Mercy.” And his advice for those young men considering the priesthood is grounded in the same philosophy that he has always professed. “I think the one and the only hope for seminarians today is through prayer and being with Jesus like the early disciples. Being with Jesus at all times, talking to him and making him the very best friend,” concluded Msgr. Davis. [ Story and photos courtesy of La Fe Magazine, Christmas 2009]

MSGR.

A veces llevamos comida y ropa. Davis. [ Historia y fotos cortesia de La Fe Magazine, Navidad 2009]
