Move over Labor Day and “Back to School,” the holiday to observe in September is “National

Chicken Month.” And why not? Chicken is a delicious alternative to beef and pork, is an excellent source of lean protein and can be prepared in hundreds of ways.

The Bavarian Inn Restaurant is celebrating Chicken Month with games, contests and mouth-watering chicken-themed menu items. Did you know that Bavarian Inn is Michigan’s Chicken capital, using more than 300 tons of chicken each year? You are no doubt familiar with Bavarian Inn’s world-famous premium golden chicken dinners. The restaurant will feature 16 chicken dishes for September. This includes family dinners, combination plates, salads, pasta, sandwiches and other special entrees.

The fun doesn’t stop in the restaurant. Visitors to Bavarian Inn can immerse

themselves in an entire month of chicken festivities, including trivia and other games, joining in a Chicken Dance flash mob, and shopping for featured poultry products in the Castle Shops. Please e-mail us your favorite chicken jokes (Why did that chicken cross the road?) and we’ll post them to our website ([email protected]).

If you’d like to become part of Bavarian Inn royalty, the restaurant will crown a National Chicken Month King, Queen, Prince and Princess September 3 at Fischer Platz, the outdoor area at the Inn’s southeast corner. There are no fees to enter and participants are asked to arrive 30 minutes prior to register. All participants compete as individuals rather than couples.

The Chicken Prince and Princess Contest (children) begins at 2:30 p.m., and includes a Chicken Dance Competition; a floating rubber chicken race (instead of rubber duckies);

Chicken Bowling; and Pin the Egg on the Chicken Game. The Prince and Princess each receive a $20 Bavarian Inn Gift Card and will be featured in Bavarian Inn’s promotional materials.

The Chicken King and Queen Contest (adult) begins at 4:00 p.m., and includes a Chicken Strongman to determine who can hold the Frankenmuth® Chicken Takeout the longest; a Chicken Dance Competition; and a Chicken Egg Obstacle Course. The King and Queen will receive a chicken dinner for four and will also be featured in Bavarian Inn’s promotional materials.

And if all that’s still not enough, come join the party all clucked up and dressed as your favorite bird. All guests who visit Fischer Platz on Sept. 3, 2011 before 4 p.m. wearing a visible, chicken-themed article of clothing will receive a Free Chicken Bratwurst (while supplies last). Now that’s something to cluck about!

Mother’s Day this past year was especially exciting at Frankenmuth’s Bavarian Inn Lodge. That’s because Judy Zehnder Keller, President of the Bavarian Inn Lodge, had been ranked as one of 2011’s Leading Moms in Business by StartupNation.com. In fact, she was ranked 10th from among hundreds of contestants across the United States.

“My successes are a direct result of the people I get to work with each and every day – who are really like an extended family,” says Zehnder Keller, a mother of three. “Those are not only the employees at the Lodge, but the guests that visit us. We work hard to create enjoyable experiences for our guests, ourselves and each other by having fun at work every day.”

America has once again demonstrated its immense interest for moms building businesses as they also tend to their families, with millions of votes being cast in the annual competition. Judy Zehnder Keller is the daughter of the late William “Tiny” Zehnder, a native of Frankenmuth, Mich. and Dorothy (Hecht) Zehnder, who grew up in Reese, Mich. She is president of the Bavarian Inn Lodge, after planning and overseeing its construction. The Lodge opened Feb. 10, 1986 with

100 guestrooms, a restaurant and meeting rooms, one indoor pool and one whirlpool. Since then, the Lodge has undergone four expansions with each one adding more guestrooms and amenities for guests. Zehnder Keller also serves as president of the Frankenmuth Cheese Haus, Frankenmuth Gift Shop, Inc. and the Frankenmuth Motel.

Judy was pregnant with son William while designing and developing the Lodge in 1985. At Grand Opening in 1986, Michael, Martha and William (Woody) were 6 & 3 years old and 5 months old respectively. As they grew up and during expansions, they each had their own miniature desks in Judy’s office and often spent time with mom at work. Currently both sons are back in the family business and daughter Martha is a Sales Manager at the Sheraton in Chicago.

Frankenmuth and the Bavarian Inn Restaurant and Lodge are so proud of Judy and her accomplishments!
