Dear Church,
November is a time of change. We end the ecclesiastical year and begin the new one as the ancient cycle repeats itself. Late this month we enter Advent. In the meantime, as we celebrate the saints who have shaped our lives (All Saints Day), think of the handful of people who have had the greatest role in forming your spiritual life and thank God for them.
For me, it is my parents and a grandmother, my pastor as I was maturing, a college professor, Dr. Malcolm Tolbert in seminary, and quite a number of you in this church.
Also this month we will remember our veterans. Though not a part of the church calendar, those who have served as protectors of our nation have also protected our freedom of worship, and we will honor them in worship with the Riverside Drum Corps (November 9).
And then, of course, there is Thanksgiving, a national holiday yet thanksgiving is the very essence of worship each and every Sunday. In fact, the word most often used for Holy Communion is eucharist which means thanksgiving. On November 16 we will host the Community Thanksgiving Banquet and Service at 5:30pm in our Banquet Hall. Grace Episcopal’s Rector Stuart Higginbotham will preach, and there will be music from First Presbyterian. I look forward to these kinds of occasions that bring our churches together.
We have five Sundays in November, and I hope to see you here on each of them. Your friend and pastor,

Breakfast and a panel discussion with Women from our community.
On January 23rd and 24th we will host our fourth annual women’s weekend at First Baptist Church. This time together is devoted to empowering women by raising awareness of issues that are global in nature and yet profoundly personal. The 2014 Summit: FBC Women’s Weekend will be “A Conversation with Glennon Doyle Melton”. Friday night we will gather and hear from Glennon herself. She is the author of the inspiring and hilarious New York Times bestselling memoir, Carry On, Warrior. She is the founder of Momastery.com, an on-line community where hundreds of thousands of readers meet daily to experience her shameless and laugh-out-loud funny essays about marriage, motherhood, faith, addiction, recovery, and serving the marginalized. She is also the creator and president of Together Rising, a non-profit organization that has revolutionized on-line giving through “Love Flash Mobs” and has connected countless families in need with hundreds of thousands of dollars in critical resources. Glennon became a sensation when her personal essays, which give language to our universal (yet often secret) experiences started going viral. Her hilarious and poignant observations have been read by millions, shared among friends, discussed at water coolers and have now inspired a social movement. Glennon will be exploring the topic what forms our image and how are we created in God’s image. We will continue the conversation on when we will hear from a panel of diverse women about their own journey towards reconciling society’s expectations of what women should look/act like with God’s vision for what their lives should look like. Tickets are $30 and will go on sale on November 7th. They will be available both at www.fbcgainesville.org and at the church through Elizabeth Burnette. Please plan on joining us, and inviting a friend, for this powerful time together.
