One night when Samuel is sleeping he hears his name being called…

Years after Samuel leads Israel as a priest and judge promising if the obey God they will win against the Philistines

The Philistines are defeated and with Samuel as their leader they live in peace

Samuel grows old and sees his sons can’t handle being judge and the people want a king God says give them a king

Samuel meets a man named Saul a Farmer and he is named king

Saul is king and wins a stunning victory over the Ammonites

Samuel warns Saul and the people that the key to their success is fidelity (faithfulness) to God

Saul disobeys God’s law twice◦ First when he is scared of the Philistines before an

attack and instead of waiting for Samuel to do the sacrifice he does it (only priests can make them)

◦ Second when he doesn’t carry out a ban on the defeated enemy but instead takes the king and the best livestock instead of destroying them for God

He is unfaithful to God so much that he will be replaced as king of Israel

He is replaced with a more faithful man who is the son of Jesse and is named David

He lived in Bethlehem and was a shepherd David’s popularity, attractiveness, and skill

began to make Saul jealous Saul attempted to kill David Saul’s Children Jonathon and Michal

(David’s wife) help him escape He flees to the shrine at Nob and lied to a

priest saying Saul sent him on an errand

By having Michal marry another man Saul hopes to weaken David’s claim to the crown

Israel has no king and has 2 rival leaders Saul’s general Abner in the North and David in the South

Ishbaal Saul’s eldest son is anointed king of the Nothern tribes

David is anointed as king of the southern tribes

Abner’s plan to take David’s throne fails and he gives Michal back and persuades the northern people to chose David as there leader

He captures Jerusalem from the Canaanites and makes it his capital

He is 30 years old when he becomes king of Israel

He brings the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem

The prophet Nathan says no to his plan and tells him of God’s greater plan for him

God will build David a line of descendants that will endure forever

That promise is called the Davidic Covenant

throne Amnon desires his half sister Tamar and

rapes her then turns on her and drives her away

David is angry but does not punish him because he is the heir to the throne

Absalom who is Tamar’s full brother is furious at Amnon and has him killed 2 years later

Absalom plots to take over the throne Absalom gathers some people and leaves

Jerusalem and declares himself king After failed revolts from the people David

tries to reconcile with the tribes David is enthroned once more and the

kingdom is back in order but he was not as popular
