  • For the fourth year running, a survey of the Perins students’ parents was carried out to gauge their satisfaction with the school and their child’s progress. The online survey was sent to all Year 7, 8, 9 and 10 parents by email (Year 11 students had already left school at the time of the survey) giving a total of 1,105. Out of this, 265 responses were received, giving a 24% response rate, making this the highest yet.

The survey used a Likert scale format asking the parents if they ‘Strongly agree’, ‘Agree’, ‘Neither agree or disagree’, ‘Disagree’ or ‘Strongly disagree’ to a series of statements.

The first part of the questionnaire was based on the questions asked of parents during an Ofsted inspection along with other questions of specific interest to Perins SLT and governors. To help qualify the responses the parents were also asked where they lived, about their child’s participation in extra-curricular activity and the parent’s involvement in parents’ evenings. The parents were also invited to leave any additional comments they might have.

Overall the level of satisfaction is high with 86% of parents responding that they agreed with the statement ‘My child is happy at Perins’, 81% agreeing with the statement ‘My child is making good progress at Perins’ and 77% agreeing with the statement ‘I would recommend Perins to another parent’.

High levels of satisfaction were received for the statement ‘The teachers at Perins are professional and approachable’ with 86% of parents agreeing and only 4% disagreeing. Similarly, positive results were received for the statement, ‘My child feels safe at Perins’ with 86% agreeing and 6% disagreeing, showing positive trends compared to previous surveys.

In comparing the satisfaction levels with the 2015 survey, the responses suggest very similar levels of satisfaction across most statements, with only a small decrease in positive results. The survey highlighted two main areas of concern for parents: communication and behavioural management.

    1. CommunicationIn response to statements regarding

    Perins School Parent Survey 2016

Report SummaryPerins School’s general communication with parents, a high level of satisfaction was indicated as to its effectiveness, frequency and content. Additional comments from the parents suggest that it is the face-to-face contact of parents’ evenings that they find particularly beneficial. The introduction of the fortnightly Parent e-bulletin has helped to improve the communication between the school and parents, however the survey suggests that further developments need to be put in place to improve communication and changes to school procedures.

“I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Perins to other parents.”

“We’ve been very pleased with Perins overall and the school has a supportive ethos, with parents kept in the picture and students well supported, knowing where to go for help”

  • 2. Behavioural Managment Although high levels of satisfaction were received for the statement ‘Perins makes sure its students are well behaved’, only 44% of parents agreed with the statement ‘My child’s lessons are not disrupted by bad behaviour’. As these results show similar trends seen in previous surveys, new procedures have been put in place over the 2015/16 academic year to improve behaviour around school. The positive impact of these changes should be seen over the 2016/17 academic year.

Extra-curricular Activities Parents were asked which, if any, extra-curricular activities their child participated in. With a large number of sports on offer there is a high level of seasonality to these results but the purpose of this question was to qualify the data by looking for correlations between the parent and child’s involvement and their level of satisfaction. With the survey carried out during the summer, athletics featured most strongly with 32% of responders saying their child participated in the sport. High response rates were also received in rugby, football, netball, choir, STEM club, cricket, tennis, drama and Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. 23% of parents said their child did not participate in any extra-curricular activities.

Parental EngagementIn this section the parents were asked which parental engagement sessions they had attended. Response rates where high with 97% of parents stating that they have attended Parents Evenings and 89% attended a Year Group Information Evenings. The vast majority of parents had attended one or more event demonstrating high levels of interest from the responders.

Additional CommentsIn the final section of the survey, parents were provided with a free format box for any additional comments they wished to make. 100 parents took the opportunity to leave their thoughts. There were many reccurring themes and most commonly parents used the opportunity to convey their thanks and satisfaction with the school. It should be noted that negative comments on banding and Transform were significantly reduced compared to the 2015 survey, suggesting that improvements made in these areas have been well received. More frequent this year were issues with regard to communication received about uniforms changes, 1:1 review days, disruption to lessons and public access on school grounds.

    Conclusions & Recommendations

The parents’ responses show an upward trend in satisfaction. This indicates positive progress in areas that have previously been identified as in need of attention and acted upon by the school. The parents’ comments, both positive and negative will help the school identify areas that can be improved in the future.

The 2016 parent survey was conducted at the end of 2015-2016 academic year and the school has since seen staffing changes with the arrival of new Headteacher. The school has continued to act on areas that parents highlighted as a concern, for example, uniform, behaviour and public access to school site. Therefore, further positive trends should be seen during the 2016-2017 academic year.

Finally, the school would like to thank all parents who took the time to complete the Parent survey.

“Perins brings out the best in my children’s education, hobbies and interests.”

“We very much appreciate the huge amount of time and commitment shown by the staff and value the friendly, welcoming feel of Perins”

“My son has just finished his journey at Perins and my daughter’s has just begun. We love the school and absolutely everything it has to offer!”
