assumptions, how do you think this new culture affected the team’s results ?

The new culture affected the team´s results in different ways.

In Terms of “Observable artifacts” we can point the fact that Mandela, when no

one expected that, gave his full support and even wear team’s outfit during the

matches. This was very important and motivator for the players because they

could see that the “Main Leader” was with them. Another factor that was

important in this point, was the fact that when everyone wanted to change not

only team’s nickname, Springboks, to Protea, but also team’s emblem and

colours, Mandela fought against this decision because he belief it was of vital

importance to maintain the symbols. This contributed for the players to feel

strongly their origins and to remember them what country they were playing for.

Concerning to the “ Exposed values”, Mandela seeks to create and develop a

relationship based on trust and mutual respect, this would result in a better

comprehension of what a “team” is, by the players and all staff. Apart of this,

Mandela created formation actions in which he brought Rugby to the all corners

of the country, providing to all people the privilege to know more about this

sport and his values. In result, the players would feel more backed up and the

good results would come.

About “Basic assumptions”, its important to refer that by the past of the country,

the rugby team was seen as a classy team exclusively associated with segregated

sporting codes and exclusion of non-white players under apartheid values. This

worked as a good tonic because all the players of the team knew what they

couldn’t turn in.
