Course Summary This practical and academic Performing Arts course is aimed at people who are interested in developing their full potential as a performer. You will develop your creativity and understanding of the performing arts industry and you will develop and extend your existing performing skills whilst exploring advanced acting, singing and dance. You will also develop presentation, communication and teamwork skills. It requires a 1 or 2 year commitment from you. You will work on three/six units over one/two years. It is a very intensive practical course. You will learn by completing projects based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands that would be faced by a modern performer. At the end of the course you will take part in a major group production, which will involve all the skills you have learnt. There will be a number of practical and written assignments over the two years. Specific entry requirements: • Ideally you should have a grade 4 in GCSE English language or literature and GCSE maths. • If you have previous experience of drama, dance or expressive arts, this is advantageous. Progression skills and opportunities Students will develop the skills required by a versatile performer. You will be encouraged to perform as much as possible, and will develop the skills required to study performing arts at a higher level. How is the course assessed?The course is 100% assessed through practical and written coursework activities. You are assessed on 6 units (three each year). Methods of assessment include:• practical workshops• teacher/ student led research• logbooks• performances• rehearsal and performance evaluations

THERE ARE NO WRITTEN EXAMS

What topics will I be studying?Some of the units studied are from the following list:

• Performing to an audience • Musical theatre• Dance Performance• Singing Techniques and Performance• Contemporary Theatre Performance• Auditions for actors• Applying physical theatre

Will I need any specialist materials or equipment?No, but you will need to wear loose comfortable clothes especially for movement and devising work.

BTEC courses are high quality, hands-on qualifications grounded in the real world of work. You will learn by doing, and develop valuable employability skills that you will use throughout your future career or progression into University.

You will receive tuition from our highly qualified staff, and at times, you will at times be invited to work with outside professionals, e.g. Frantic Assembly. You will also be expected to attend rehearsals outside of normal timetabled lessons and to take part in some of our numerous opportunities to see live performances. The department organise trips to London on a regular basis as well as visiting regional theatres, such as, The Haymarket Theatre, Basingstoke, The Oxford Playhouse and The Chichester Festival theatre.BTEC Performing Arts will give you the skills you need to develop onto the next stage of your career, either Drama Schools or Theatre related courses at University. This course will also support those students who wish to take Drama or Performance as a joint honours course or who are looking to develop valuable confidence, team work and presentation skills into other subject areas or the world of work. Students also progress onto studying other non- performing arts related subjects at University.
