Shanghai Cultural Plaza

In Shanghai’s historic Luwan District, BBB transformed a 6.45-hectare site into a landscaped cultural park, including a new 2,000-seat theater with a geometrically complex envelope design.

BBB won an international design competition for the redevelopment of a full-block site in central Shanghai’s largest historic preservation area in the former French Concession. As one of the signature projects undertaken by the Chinese government for the 2010 World Expo, BBB developed the site as a city park with a below-ground theater as its centerpiece. Water and pathways flow around the theater complex, with the fluid lines of its architecture serving to soften its presence within the park. At the center of the complex’s lobby is a crystalline glass and steel funnel that flows from the roof to the lobby’s floor, symbolizing the importance of water in Chinese culture and in the development of Shanghai. The program also includes the adaptive reuse of several historic buildings, including a unique long-span structure, parking, and subway station access.

New World Stages

A new, multi-theater venue for Off-Broadway productions establishes a community of performance spaces just steps away from the Broadway theater district.

The former Worldwide Plaza movie multiplex in midtown Manhattan has been transformed into an exciting cluster of five live production theaters. The new venue includes two 499-seat theaters, two 360-seat theaters, one 199-seat theater, and can accommodate 2,000 theatergoers and as many as five different shows at a time. A lively new lobby and gathering area is at the heart of the complex, where a wall of light-featuring projections on a metal-mesh scrim rises dramatically into the double-height space. The light wall also serves as a cue for audiences, as large numerals—one for each of the five theaters—light up behind the scrim to alert patrons that a show is about to begin. To enter the theaters from the second level, patrons pass through a series of walkways and bridges that provide an elevated view into the lobby space below.

Lincoln Center Promenade

BBB’s work on the Lincoln Center Promenade creates a vibrant, new cultural corridor that better connects the Performing Arts Center with the surrounding cityscape.

BBB has been working with Lincoln Center for over a decade, beginning with a revitalization plan to prepare the world-renowned performing arts center for the 21st century. The Promenade is the centerpiece of the Lincoln Center campus, for which BBB served as the Executive Architect with Diller Scofidio + Renfro. Consisting of the public open spaces surrounded by the multiple performing arts venues, the aim of the project is to enhance the visitor experience and encourage interaction among artists, students, and the public. The Josie Robertson Plaza is the focal point, and includes new pavement and landscape features, integrated information technologies, a glass and travertine material palette, and a reconfigured vehicular and pedestrian approach. BBB worked closely with Diller Scofidio + Renfro and Wet Design to transform the fountain itself into a more dynamic feature, with the addition of new lighting, improved seating, waterproofing, and other technical upgrades.

Lincoln Center Capital Needs Survey and Master Plan

BBB’s capital needs survey and master plan capture current and future programmatic needs for the various constituent arts organizations at New York’s renowned performing arts campus.

As part of Lincoln Center’s revitalization plan for the 21st century, BBB prepared a capital needs survey that defined the scope and budget for potential capital improvement projects. The scope included assessing the architectural and engineering conditions of existing facilities, as well as capturing current and future programmatic needs. Subsequently, working in conjunction with Cooper Robertson & Partners, BBB developed a more detailed master plan for Lincoln Center. The plan involved program refinement for each constituent arts organization, and the master plan for the entire 16-acre campus. Redevelopment options included infrastructure projects to meet safety and accessibility requirements; capital projects needed to bring performing facilities in line with current industry standards; and special projects requiring substantial alteration of existing facilities or the construction of new facilities. Because of site limitations, various options were explored to accommodate the expansion needs of different constituents. The master plan identifies sites for shared facilities, as well as organizational modifications to the infrastructure.

Beacon Theatre

BBB’s interior restoration of the Beacon Theatre ensures the continuation of its legacy as New York City’s premier, intimate “rock house.”

The Beacon Theatre is one of the last surviving movie palaces in Manhattan, and stands as both an architectural landmark and an icon of popular culture. Designed by noted Chicago architect Walter Ahlschlager and opened in 1929, the Beacon Theatre is a designated New York interior landmark and one of the city’s most popular live performance venues. Over time, the Beacon’s lavish interiors—an eclectic mix of Greek, Roman, Renaissance and Rococo styles—had deteriorated. BBB was engaged to lead the comprehensive restoration of the historic 2,829-seat theater and interior public spaces, backstage, and back-of-house areas. System upgrades necessary for the theater’s modernization—including theatrical house lighting, electrical service and wiring, plumbing and audio technology—were designed with careful consideration of their historic context. Based on extensive research and detailed, on-site examination of original, decorative painting techniques, the restoration employed the services of over 1,000 artisans, craftsmen, and tradesmen.

Mark Morris Dance Center

BBB’s design for a 5-story dance facility in Brooklyn creates a dedicated space for a renowned dance troupe.

The Mark Morris Dance Group is widely recognized as one of the most creative forces in the world of dance. As the first single-choreographed company to ever build its own facility, the organization commissioned BBB to design a new center for dance on a site across the street from the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) that previously housed an automobile showroom. The design features three column-free studios for the company on the upper floors, including a 60’ x 60’ column-free studio with a vaulted roof on the top floor that can be converted to a theater for preview performances of new work. The ground floor has three additional studios, plus locker rooms and lounges for the school, which offers dances classes for children and adults. The facility also houses administrative offices, company and guest dressing rooms, a physical therapy suite, an archive room, wardrobe storage, a lounge, two terraces, and support facilities. Continuing its 15-year relationship, BBB is currently working on Phase Five at Mark Morris, planning for three more dance studios.

Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts Master Plan

The Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is a 90-acre historic estate that presents a range of music, art, and educational programs within its various historic and contemporary venues.

BBB led a master plan team to develop a long-term vision that organizes the site to better improve the experience of patrons, visitors, artists, performers, and the staff. Employing an interactive design methodology, the planning team explored different options for restoration and future development of the site, including the renovation and/or replacement of existing al fresco performance venues, re-organization of administrative offices, and revitalization of multiple historic landscape features. Following the master plan, BBB has completed the design of a new performance venue which includes flexibility to accommodate up to 500 people for a variety of performances and events.

Apollo Theater

BBB’s multi-phase renovation at the Apollo includes the meticulous restoration, creative reinterpretation, and expansion of one of New York City’s most fabled theaters.

The Apollo Theater, originally constructed in 1913, is a longtime performance hub in Harlem with national, state, and city landmark status. In 2001, BBB was commissioned to oversee a phased restoration that draws from the theater’s 1940’s aesthetic — the era chosen as most representative of its impact on local, national, and international culture. BBB’s work involved restoration, renovation, and internal expansion. In the initial phases of work, BBB focused on the restoration of the historic 125th Street terra cotta facade, marquee, and blade sign; the restoration of the original cornice; the installation of a new roof; and the addition of a new storefront, entrance doors, and box office facilities. The next phase focused on the theater interiors, including updates to the interior finishes; the addition of new seating; enhancements to backstage support elements; and the integration of new building and life safety systems.

Manhattan School of Music Andersen Residence Hall and Performance Spaces

BBB’s design for a new, multi-use residence hall creates a vertical campus for an internationally renowned music conservatory in upper Manhattan.

Located in Morningside Heights, amidst a collection of notable universities and religious institutions, Andersen Hall is a fully-realized campus for the prestigious Manhattan School of Music. The 19-story, mixed-use facility consolidates the different programs of the school — previously scattered in buildings throughout the neighborhood and beyond — into one vertical campus. The tower consists of 12 floors of student residences with a total of 517 beds, as well as the President’s penthouse apartment and entertainment space, a library, and 58 practice rooms. The project also includes a parking garage, a public lobby and box office, and two donor-funded performance spaces: an intimate 150-seat recital hall with raked seating and a larger, flat-floor space that seats 200 and accommodates a wide range of performances. BBB’s work includes both master planning and architectural realization in order to ensure that the design will accommodate future academic and residential needs.

Beyer Blinder Belle was founded in 1968, in the wake of the urban renewal movement in the United States, when the social fabric of cities, communities, and buildings was compromised by the prevailing attitudes about planning and architecture. We pioneered and defined a different approach to the design of the built environment that focused on architecture empowering people — their interaction with each other on streets and in neighborhoods, their pleasure in moving through the city, and their connections to the surrounding physical fabric.

have guided our practice in new construction as well as master planning and urban
