Tony Jordan - Creator, Dickensian

Dickensian has been a bit of a labour of love. As a writer, I have always been inspired by the marvellous characters of Charles Dickens and often thought it a pity that to all intents and purposes

they lived only within their own novels.

So when the BBC gave me the opportunity to take some of those iconic characters and bring them together for the first time, it was

something of a dream come true.

To hear Ebenezer Scrooge and Fagin in conversation, to see a living Jacob Marley and a young Miss Havisham, to watch Mrs Gamp and Silas Wegg alongside Bob and Emily Cratchit is any writer’s dream. All I can hope is that I’ve done them justice and, more importantly, that Charles Dickens would be pleased with what I’ve

done; but something tells me he would.

The music for the series by the amazingly talented Debbie Wiseman was crucial to the storytelling, and the personality of the show owes much to Debbie’s work. The theme tune is perfectly pitched with equal amounts of intrigue and playfulness. The score never intrudes on the action, but enhances it in the way that only the very

best composers can do.

A note from the composer Debbie Wiseman

When I first read Tony Jordan’s script for episode 1 of Dickensian I started to imagine the score almost immediately - music that would conjure up the Victorian age, and feel like another of the larger-than-life characters; lively and vibrant, full of attitude. The jangling, quirky, distinctive tones of the cimbalom sprang straight into my thoughts. So I called the best cimbalom player in town, Greg Knowles, and started to learn more about the instrument, and suddenly the tunes began to flow. The main theme, featuring the cimbalom, was composed before the series started filming, and then everything else took shape as the episodes were delivered. Over the 20 episodes, I was able to twist and turn each character’s theme as the plotlines unfolded, and I loved creating a musical world to help to support the magical Dickensian world on screen. I wanted to compose a score that wasn’t too pretty, too lush and orchestral, as I felt that would have jarred when set against the dirty and rough-and-ready Dickensian streets. Instead I assembled a characterful collection of musicians who would help to

conjure up the magic of these imaginative stories.

A big thank you to the wonderful Locrian Ensemble of London for their spirited performances, and of course to Greg for providing me with the musical seed from which everything else grew. Thank you to my brilliant music recordist, Steve Price, for recording and mixing my score so beautifully, and for always being a perfectionist. Finally, a very big thank you to Tony Jordan and all of the talented and dedicated production team for this special opportunity to create

my very own musical Dickens characters.
