PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT IN 802.11 WLAN USING NOVEL

    MAC ALGORITHMS

    ABSTRACT:

Wireless networks are becoming increasingly popular in tele-Communications, especially for the

provisioning of mobile access to wired network services. As a consequence, efforts have been

devoted to the provisioning of reliable data delivery for a wide variety of applications over

    different wireless infrastructures.

In wireless network, regardless of the location, users can access services available to wired-

network users. IEEE 802.11 standards represent a significant milestone in the provisioning of

network connectivity for mobile users. However, the 802.11 medium access control strategy and physical variability of the transmission medium leads to limitations in terms of bandwidth,

latency, information loss, and mobility. Moreover, the deployment of the Transmission Control

Protocol (TCP) over IEEE 802.11 networks is constrained by the low reliability of the channel,

node mobility and long Round Trip Times (RTTs).

Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA) medium access control

algorithm used in 802.11 wireless networks suffers seriously from the hidden terminal problem

and the exposed terminal problem. Novel MAC Algorithms to overcome such limitations are

compared and their suitability for specific deployment scenarios is studied.

A comprehensive analysis of the performance limitations and potential enhancements to 802.11

networks is done. Algorithms to overcome such limitations at the cost of high throughput and

    minimum delays are studied.
