Integrated Drive Systems for pumps, fans and compressors

Perfect interaction for a higher efficiency

in a higher energy efficiency and lower noise levels. Drive train condition monitoring as optional service plays a role in achieving outstanding plant availability across the board.

With Integrated Drive Systems, Siemens supplies the only real complete solution for overall drive systems world-wide. All components of the drive train are integrated to create an efficient, complete solution – an integrated drive system, which sets itself apart as a result of its triple integration: It can be seamlessly integrated into every application, every automation environment and even in the overall lifecycle. Integrated Drive Systems from Siemens set new standards when it comes to efficiency.

New potential for the complete lifecycle

Especially for pumps, fans and compressors, Siemens has developed integrated drive systems, where the motor, drive and coupling are optimally harmonized and coordi-nated with one another. The perfect triple integration facilitates a substantial increase in efficiency – and more specifically in all lifecycle phases, from planning through engineering, commissioning and operation up to service.

The drive system that is explicitly tailored to address pump, fan and compressor applications, comprises drive, motor and coupling. It incorporates two new products, whose technical attributes are perfectly harmonized with one another: the SIMOTICS FD motor and the SINAMICS G120P drive. The system is completed by a FLENDER N-EUPEX/ZAPEX coupling.

The straightforward, standard system configuration even reduces engineering time and costs, and commissioning is speeded up using preinstalled wizards. In operation, the perfect interaction of all of the drive components results

Integrated Drive Systems: high performance for pumps, fans and compressors

The new European ecodesign standard EN 50598

The new EN 50598 standard defines ecodesign require-ments for drive systems used in an electrically driven machine. It is based on the ErP Directive of the EU, which defines minimum standards for products that consume energy in private households, the service sector as well as the industrial environment. All products that use an appreciable amount of electrical energy must be evalu-ated relating to the efficiency and/or the losses.

The new standard is based on the concept of the »extended product approach«, where the mode of opera-tion of products regarding their efficiency is taken into consideration. This standard was drawn up by the techni-cal committee of the European CENELEC standards organi-zation of Europump, the Association of European Pump Manufacturers as well as machine OEMs – along with motor and drive manufacturers. The objective was not only to address pumps, but all types of driven machines. As a consequence, the new standard contains all of the relevant parameters relating to the energy demand of an electrically driven machine. With EN 50598, the focus moves away from individual components to the overall system. The energy efficiency requirements have been extended from the individual drive components to include the system as well as the driven loads. The standard comprises three parts, where the second part is especially relevant in this regard. It specifies indicators to evaluate the energy efficiency of drive and motor systems, and also defines how the losses

are to be determined. To keep the associated costs within reasonable limits, a total of eight operating points have been defined. Manufacturers should determine the losses at these eight operating points and document them.

Further, components and systems are classified according to specific efficiency classes so that their energy efficiency can be compared. drives are classified according to IE 0, IE 1 and IE 2 – and drive systems according to IES 0, IES 1 and IES 2. Higher numbers signify lower losses, analogous to the already existing efficiency classes for line operated motors (IE 1 – IE 4).

The new standard allows the power losses of inverters and drives to be determined at a reasonable cost under reproducible conditions. This allows users to be able to appropriately compare products. They apply to AC/AC drives that are not capable of energy recovery and motors with integrated drive in the power range extending from 0.12 up to 1,000 kW – and supply voltages from 100 up to 1,000 V. Optionally, the standard can also be applied to AC/AC drives, AC/DC and DC/AC drives capable of energy recovery – and a combination of drives and motors.

An impressively frugal team: SIMOTICS FD with SINAMICS G120P Siemens offers a high performance drive system that has been optimized for the pump/fan market with high associated energy efficiency with the combina-tion of SIMOTICS FD motor and SINAMICS G120P drive. The system operates with losses that are over 35 percent lower than the reference system of the EN 50598 standard, therefore satisfying the require-ments of system efficiency class IES 2.

SINAMICS G120P – simple and efficientSINAMICS G120P Cabinet drive units are specifically tai-lored to address pump, fan and compressor applications with square-law load characteristics. High efficiency and low operating costs are guaranteed with an efficiency exceeding 98% and application-specific energy-saving functions.

The appropriate pulse patterns are automatically acti-vated, ensuring optimized control of the SIMOTICS FD motors. PFC (pumps, fans, compressors) commissioning Wizards and faster motor identification guarantee that installation is simpler and more straightforward.

The perfect interaction

SIMOTICS FD – powerful and versatileIn the power range starting at 200 kW, SIMOTICS FD motors form the basis for a cost-effective overall system comprising motor and drive with a high power density. The motors are based on a leading-edge modular system to address the widest range of requirements and sectors. They set themselves apart as a result of the energy-saving operation and high level of versatility.

SIMOTICS FD motors are available with different cooling options, including water cooling. They are attractive as a result of their high overload capability and quiet opera-tion. The cast iron enclosure means that they are espe-cially rugged and durable.

SIMOTICS and SINAMICS – two components, a perfect team The rated motor currents are precisely adapted to the drive output currents, and the motor is designed for the rated drive pulse frequency. The days when drives had to be overdimensioned are long gone. Optimum voltage utilization with low noise levels are the result. Faster engineering and high plant and system availability levels are some of the other advantages. An overview of the facts:

• Capital investment costs reduced by up to 15% by avoiding overdimensioning• Energy efficiency increased as losses are reduced by about 10%• Noise levels are reduced by more than 4 dB• Engineering time reduced by up to 30% based on the TIA Portal• High system availability as a result of the longer motor service life and condition monitoring of the drive train
