A magnet is any object that pulls certain metals toward it.
All magnets have a two poles- a north pole and a south pole. Magnetic poles are at the ends of a magnet and are the areas of the magnet where the force of attraction is the strongest. This force of attraction is also known as magnetism. Magnetism is a magnet’s ability to attract certain metals.
Magnets attract, or pull toward them, different types of metals. The two most common types of metal that magnets attract are iron and nickel.

tism
Magnetism is a magnet’s ability to either attract or repel other objects. When a magnet attracts another object, it pulls it toward it. Magnets can attract other magnets. When opposite poles (north and south) of two magnets are put together, they will attract. Magnets can also repel each other. When they repel, they push away from each other. This is what happens when you put like poles together (ex. a south pole and a south pole).
Two of the most commonly used magnets are the horseshoe magnet and the bar magnet. Each of these magnets have a north pole and a south pole.

Lodestone is a rock that is found in nature that is a magnet. The Earth also acts like one big bar magnet. The Earth’s core is a ball of melted iron. When the Earth spins, the iron is magnetized.
