A native Vermonter, tuba and euphonium soloist Joanna Ross Hersey

studied with Dan Perantoni at Arizona State University, received a

Master of Music in Tuba Performance from the New England

Conservatory of Music studying with Chester Schmitz, and earned her

Doctor of Musical Arts in Tuba Performance from the Hartt School.

As Principal Tubist with the United States Coast Guard Band, Joanna

performed throughout the country as a soloist and clinician after

winning the position at the age of nineteen. Joanna has played for

three U.S. Presidents, performed at numerous state functions for

visiting dignitaries, and has appeared on The Today Show and Good

Morning America. In her freelance career she has performed with

artists including Placido Domingo, Roberta Flack, Marilyn Horne, Arlo

Guthrie, Michael Bolton, Lee Greenwood, Arturo Sandoval and Jack

Nicholson. Joanna is a founding member of the Athena Brass Band, a

group which has been featured at the Brass Band Festivals in

Danville, Kentucky and Gettysburg, Pennsylvania with Joanna as

soloist. Joanna is currently Principal Tubist with the Carolina

Philharmonic and the Carolina International Orchestra.

As a member of the Alchemy Tuba-Euphonium Quartet, Joanna

performs throughout North America and Europe and can be heard on the group’s recordings Village Dances (1997)

and Prelude and Groove (2012). For thirteen years Alchemy has been in residence each February at the Horn-Tuba

Workshop in Jever, Germany where the group performs recitals, gives master-classes and conducts ensembles.

The quartet also has performed recitals in Linz, Austria as part of the International Tuba Euphonium Conference,

and was featured in the outdoor Fest der Natur on the banks of the Danube River. Together with Michael Parker,

Joanna is also part of an exciting new duo JAM: Joanna and Michael, who have just released their first CD, featuring

tuba, euphonium, cimbasso, and electronics.

Joanna has produced two solo albums, O quam mirabilis (2010) and Zigzags (2015), featuring music by composers

including Hildegard von Bingen and Libby Larson in combination with her own compositions. Joanna’s research

interests focus on brass history and women in 20th Century American music, and her work has been published in

the International Tuba Euphonium Journal, the International Women’s Brass Conference Newsletter, the Historic

Brass Society Journal, the North Carolina Music Educator’s Journal and the Journal of Historical Research in Music

Education. In collaboration with Parker Mouthpieces, Joanna has debuted the Hersey Artist Model Tuba

Tom is a composer and band director with a growing

international reputation. His music for bands is premiered

and commissioned the world over by artists including ‘The

President’s Own’ United States Marine Band, Central Band

of the Royal Air Force, Brass Band of Battle Creek, Cory

Band, Philippe Schartz (Principal Trumpet BBC National

Orchestra of Wales), Glenn Van Looy (International

Euphonium Soloist) and Steven Mead (International

Euphonium Soloist).

Noted performances of his work have been given at New York's Carnegie Hall, the BASBWE London Festival, Royal

Northern College of Music Festival of Brass, World Music Contest (Kerkrade), International Tuba Euphonium

Conferences, International Trumpet Guild Conferences, Schagerl Brass Festival, Swiss Solo Quartet Championship

and the solo and band sections of the National Band Championships of New Zealand, Australia and Great Britain.

He also has a special relationship with the Belgian ensemble Brassband Buizingen, acting as their Associate

Composer since 2015. Away from bands Tom composed a fanfare for the Royal opening of the fifth National

Assembly for Wales in 2016, whilst his first work for orchestra, Tourbillon, was premiered by Denmark's Aalborg

Symfoniorkester in 2017.

As a conductor Tom began his career with the BTM Band from South Wales. He has since gone on to success as

Musical Director of Desford Colliery Band, Associate Conductor of the Fairey Band and Musical Director of Bristol’s

Filton Concert Brass, who he has established as one of the UK’s newest championship bands. In 2015 he directed

Maidstone Wind Symphony to the National Concert Band Championship title and was honoured to serve as

conductor of the National Youth Brass Band of Wales in 2016. He has also led conducting students and directed

Tom studied tuba with Nigel Seaman at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama and holds Bachelors and

Masters degrees in composition having studied with Anthony Powers and Arlene Sierra at Cardiff University School

of Music. In 2009/10 he was awarded a research scholarship from the Arts and Humanities Research Council and

the Welsh Livery Guild Composition Award. He was also a BASCA British Composer Award nominee in 2011, a

prizewinner at the EBBA European Composers Competition 2012 and the recipient of a Harvey Phillips Award for

excellence in composition, presented by the International Tuba Euphonium Association, in 2014.

Dr. Andrea Venet is a percussion artist, educator, and

composer specializing in contemporary and classical

genres. She is currently Assistant Professor of Percussion and

head of the department at the University of North

Florida, where she directs the UNF percussion ensemble,

teaches applied lessons, pedagogy, methods and percussion

literature. As a passionate educator, Dr. Venet’s research

involves pedagogy, with focus on college percussion

education at various levels, classical improvisation and

historically informed Baroque performance practice

techniques for Bach on marimba. Her creative activity

includes performance, composition, and commissioning new works.

As a soloist, chamber musician, and clinician, Andrea maintains an active performance schedule nationally and internationally, having performed in Europe, Japan, and Trinidad. Most recently, she was invited to present at the 2020 World Symposium of Choral Music in Auckland, NZ with Dr. Cara Tasher. Andrea has been a featured performer with SNL percussionist Valerie Naranjo, Ivan Trevino, at the Celebrate Marimba Festival and with the Kutztown University Symphony, the Lawson Ensemble, Project Trio, the Eastman Percussion Ensemble, was a member of the award winning Santa Clara Vanguard Drum and Bugle Corps, and performed with Grammy winning alternative band TOOL with the Gilbert Drumline in 2001. Dr. Venet’s percussion duo, Escape Ten (with Dr. Annie Stevens, Virginia Tech), maintains a steady performance schedule touring as guest artists and clinicians internationally. Through collaboration with composer Eric Guinivan, they are the recipients of a marimba duo commission entitled Illuminations (2018), awarded from the prestigious Fromm Foundation. In 2016 they performed a standing-room only Showcase Concert at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention, giving 3 world premieres by Aurél Hollo, Joe Locke, and Michael Burritt. These works will be released on their second album My Favorite Things. In addition to regular appearances at percussion festivals and universities across the country, Escape Ten has been featured artists in Trinidad, the Barnes Foundation, Leigh Howard Stevens Summer Marimba Seminar, Heartland Marimba Festival, Rhea Miller Concert Series, Musica Viva Concert Series, McCormick Marimba Festival, Interlochen, the International Trombone Festival, VMEA, and the Virginia Humanities Conference. Escape Ten has collaborated with composers that include Michael Burritt, Alejandro Viñao, Ivan Trevino, Emmanuel Séjourné, Joe Locke, Aurél Hollo, Eric Guinivan, Steve Danyew, Steve Ridley, Drew Worden, Erin Graham, and Kelly Rossum. Escape Ten has their own publication series of new percussion duos through Keyboard Percussion Publications (KPP). You can hear Escape Ten on their first album Colours of a Groove. Andrea holds a DMA in Performance and Literature with a minor in Pedagogy, and the prestigious Performer’s Certificate from the Eastman School of Music. She received her Masters in Percussion Performance from Rutgers University and a Bachelors of Music from Arizona State University. Her compositions and arrangements can be found through Keyboard Percussion Publications (KPP), Tapspace, and self-published via her website. Andrea is an active member of the Percussive Arts Society, where she currently serves as Florida Chapter President, is a performing Malletech artist, and proudly endorses Remo and DREAM Cymbals.

Tom began learning the cornet at the age of nine and joined his local

brass band, Stannington. As an early teenager he joined Barnsley

Building Society Band and quickly ascended to the position of

principal cornet. Tom’s first taste of playing ‘top man’ in a

championship section band happened a few years later, aged fifteen,

when he joined the Rothwell Temperance Band.

During these formative years Tom also played solo cornet with the

National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain including two courses as

Leader. It was the Band’s Associate Conductor, Dr Nicholas Childs,

who noticed his talent and later invited him to join the world famous

Black Dyke Band.

Tom played for ‘Dyke’ on repiano cornet and, at the age of eighteen,

was promoted to tutti solo cornet. He played with Black Dyke for four

years, contributing to many contest successes, including the British

Open, English National and National Championship of Great Britain

titles. During his time with ‘Dyke’ he also toured extensively across

Europe and Australia.

After his graduation from the Royal Northern College of Music in

2009 studying under Richard Marshall, Tom was invited to join the

mighty Cory Band as principal cornet. After leading the band in his first year to its hat-trick winning European title

in 2010, he has since lead Cory to British Open titles in 2011 and 2016, Welsh regional titles in 2011, 2012, 2014,

2015 and 2017, Brass in Concert Championship wins in 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2016, the European title once again

in 2013 and 2016, and three National Final wins in 2013, 2015 and 2016.

A few highlights of his time so far at Cory have been receiving the bands player of the year award twice in 2012 and

2015, releasing his debut solo CD ‘In Principal’, and leading Cory to its historic Grand Slam achievement in 2016,

with the band finishing off the year as the world’s No.1 ranked brass band for a consecutive and unprecedented

ten years.

As well as playing principal cornet with the Cory band, he is a Professor of Cornet at the Royal Welsh College of

Music and Drama, Brass specialist with Ev-entz Music, Cornet tutor for the National Youth Brass Band of Wales and

Cornet tutor for the National Children’s Brass Band of Great Britain.

As a Besson artist Tom represents the Buffet Crampon Group across the world and over the past few years has

performed as a soloist in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Canada and the USA.

Downbeat magazine award winning Canadian trumpet player/composer

Dean McNeill is a Full Professor at the University of Saskatchewan where

he has taught applied trumpet, trumpet choir, jazz history, jazz ensemble,

jazz materials, jazz improvisation, jazz pedagogy, and jazz arranging for

many years.

A Full Professor at the University of Saskatchewan Canadian trumpet

player/composer Dean McNeill has received a Special Recognition Award

from the Saskatchewan Jazz Festival for his contributions to jazz in

Saskatchewan. On the CD O Music (http://www.allangilliland.com/) Dean

performed as soloist the composition Kalla which won the 2012 Western

Canadian Music Award for Classical Composition of the Year.

Dean has directed the International Music Camp’s Faculty Jazz Ensemble, the UofS Kenderdine Campus’ Jazz

Composer’s Retreat program and has lead many of his own professional large and small jazz ensemble tours, many

of which have been recorded by CBC Radio. A Yamaha artist Dean has performed as a guest artist with the National

Youth Band of Canada, as well as with professional ensembles such as the Winnipeg, Edmonton, Vancouver Jazz

Orchestras and the Calgary Creative Arts Ensemble.

Dean has adjudicated throughout Canada and the Unites States and performed alongside the likes of of Kenny

Wheeler, Pat LaBarbera, Michael Cain, Hugh Fraser, Tom Banks, Brad Turner, Kelly Jefferson, David Braid, Bob

Mintzer, Denzal Sinclaire, PJ Perry, David Braid, Ingrid Jensen, Jon Balantyne, Campbell Ryga and many others.

Dean holds music degrees from the University of North Texas (Masters), McGill University (Undergraduate), and

Grant MacEwan University (Music Diploma). He has released two CDs respectively entitled Prairie Fire: Large Jazz

Ensemble Music of Dean McNeill and Mélange: New Music For Trumpet and Piano

A recipient of the U of S Department of Music’s Dwaine Nelson Teaching Award Dean’s past administrative service

has included Head of the U of S Department of Music (2004-2009) and serving as a board member on Jazz Canada

(i.e. Canadian chapter of the International Association of Jazz Education) and the Canadian Music Centre (i.e. Prairie

Region Board).

Sarah Thawer www.sarahthawer.com Sarah Thawer is a drummer based in Toronto, Canada. She is currently freelancing, collaborating, doing session work and performing with international artists playing jazz, latin, gospel, hip hop, funk, r&b/soul, fusion, indian and world music. She studied jazz and world music at York University and was the recipient of the Oscar Peterson Scholarship, the highest award given by the institution, in addition to graduating with the Summa Cum Laude distinction. She has shared the stage with many popular artists including AR Rahman, Del Hartley, D’bi and the 333, Rich Brown, Re.verse, Salim-Sulaiman, Benny Dayal and Funktuation, Jane Bunnett and Maqueque, Mitch Frohman, Thompson Egbo-Egbo, Maria Mulata, Grisha Goryachev, Roger and Sam Grandinson, S S Thaman, Steve Koven, Vijay Prakash to name a few. Sarah has also been featured on various television and radio stations such as CBC News newscast, Jazz FM 91.1, OMNI TV, Rogers Daytime, Vijay TV and various others.
