INTRODUCTION

Stock is a term used to symbolize an investor’s ownership in a company. Those who own stock

are commonly called stockholders or shareholders. As a shareholder, an investor theoretically

owns a percentage of everything the company owns or owes. The company’s profitability or lack

thereof, determines whether its stock is traded at a higher or lower price. While trading of debt and

commodities has its origins in middle ages, the modern concepts of a stock market began in the

late 16th

century.

Stock market is the place where shares of public listed companies are traded. The primary market

is where companies float shares to the general public in an initial public offering (IPO) to raise

capital. Once new securities have been sold in the primary market, they are traded in the secondary

market, where one investor at the prevailing market price or at whatever prices both the buyer and

seller agree upon. The secondary market or the stock exchanges are regulated by the regulatory

authority. In India the secondary and primary markets are governed by the Security and Exchange

Board of India (SEBI). A stock exchange facilitates stock brokers to trade company stocks and

other securities. A stock may be bought or sold only if it is listed on an exchange. Thus, it is the

meeting place of the stock buyers and sellers. India’s premier stock exchange is the Bombay stock

exchange and the National stock exchange. Stock markets are the platforms where buyers and

sellers of shares meet and decide on s price to trade and earn great profit by investing wisely in the

company .By investing in company one can make money . According to these sayings “Youth of

today is the leader of tomorrow” we are mainly focusing on student’s attitude and behaviors

towards stock market.

REVIEW OF LITERATURE

Review of literature benefits a researcher to get familiarized with our selected research problem

and also may provide some guidelines in selecting a proper research methodology. Moreover, it

helps in finding out the research gaps in the existing literature. This will help the researcher in

fine-tuning their research problem and methodology. Another benefit of reviewing the existing

literature is that in cases where the research problems are similar, the conclusions and findings

may be easily compared. It will help the researcher to determine if their findings are practically

capable of working successfully or not.

Nash (2012), that is, 98 per cent of Indian citizens do not have a Demat account, and thus lack

awareness about stock markets. Although many studies have been carried out in parts of the

country and abroad, as mentioned earlier, in India a limited number of studies have been conducted

in this area. Thus, it is against this backdrop that the present study has been undertaken to fill up

this gap and make a modest contribution in the field.

Thilakam (2012) in his study found that the financial knowledge of rural masses in India is very

RESULTS

Collection of data is an important element of research from which we can arrive at useful findings

and conclusions. Primary data was collected through the help of Google form, which was sent to

the youngster of the age group of 18 to 24, the study, aims at this age group because “Youth of

today is the leader of tomorrow”. People of this age might be tough about stock market. Data was

collected from 160 students mainly from state of Karnataka, Kerala, and Maharashtra. Collected

data was analyzed and presented with the help of charts. Detailed analysis has helped the researcher

to draw a clear picture of the student’s awareness towards stock market.

Demographic factors:

Demographic factors are the study of a population expressed statistically, such as age, sex,

education level, income level, marital status, occupation, religion, birth rate etc. These are factors

that are used to define the characteristics of a person or a population. Since our study is based on

student’s awareness towards stock market. Student’s data is collected about their age, gender,

educational background, region etc. The study is mainly based on students of the age 18-24. There

are students who are currently graduating, and few might have completed and looking up for

further studies. We aim at this particular age group because the students get a clear idea about the

economics conditions and other factors about their life.so; we think this age is the best age for

students to know about the stock market. And the students get an idea about investment.

Gender:

The data shown below clearly exhibits that female students have more interest in investing in the

stock market as their focus is in the savings and investments. This witnesses that the female

students must be given lot of awareness in the colleges so that they will encourage other members

in the family which shall help the society as a whole. As the saying goes if you teach man he just

use it for him only but the girls will share it with everyone.

Thus, the sample shows that females students are very much interested in the investment in stock

market.

lack of awareness about the investment. This issue has to be solved through the effective

implementation of financial awareness programmes through the support of government and the

private organizations at a large extend which shall facilitate youth to invest in the different avenues

of the financial market.

DISCUSSIONS

The study mentions that people consider fixed deposits in banks as the most effective financial

instrument followed by stock market. They are also using the traditional way of investment i.e.

bank deposit, fixed deposit, gold, silver, land, property etc. Simple principle of investment is high

risk, high return and low risk low return, so if one wants high returns, they must take risk. Proper

knowledge about stock market has to be given to youngsters. Government should bring awareness

among people about stock market and give them more opportunity to invest in shares. Economic

growth of country is influenced by investment decisions. Advice about stock market must be given

to youngster. Not only about stock market but the step involved before investing has to be tough

to students.

DEMAT account has to be given to a student from educational institution collaborating with any

knowledge about investment should be given to students Media must provide news about stock

market. Research strongly felt that there is a need of giving practical knowledge about stock market

to students. The study highlights that students thinks that stock market as a time-consuming risk

taking due to various factors so students must be given proper awareness about stock market and

encourage them to invest in stock market which indirectly effects the economic growth of the

country. The educational institution has to encourage student to participate in stock market and

has to give practical knowledge about it. Not only educational institution but also government and

media have to give proper awareness about stock market. People have to be properly known

ledged about stock market before spreading wrong rumors about stock market. Even parents can

encourage their children to participate in stock market along with them instead of misleading them

about stock market and keeping age limit as a bearer.
