NEEDS AND ASSETSOur Los Angeles and Ventura County communities are rich in diversity, history, and culture. Amidst our many strengths, we also struggle with a variety of social justice and equity issues. While these issues are complex, the Pepperdine Volunteer Center challenges students, faculty, and staff to be active citizens and partner with community assets to make a positive impact.

More information and additional opportunities can be viewed on our website at pepperdine.edu/volunteercenter.

WEEKLY SERVICE

Education and LiteracyStudents have the opportunity to work with and encourage youth and English language learners in furthering their education. The Volunteer Center tutors incarcerated youth in L.A. County juvenile probation camps, such as Camp Gonzales and Camp Miller. In addition, students can participate with America Reads in local elementary schools, Language Connection at the Malibu Community Labor Exchange, and tutoring children experiencing homelessness in Skid Row through School on Wheels.

Environmental JusticePepperdine has a unique obligation to not only engage in sustainability but also to educate our students. We have a moral obligation to those of the lowest socioeconomic status who are the most impacted by environmental degradation. The Volunteer Center partners with the Center for Sustainability and the student Green Team to raise awareness about how each of us can actively strive toward sustainability. Each opportunity provides hands-on ways to be stewards of the environment. This program partners with Heal the Bay, Mountains Restoration Trust, TreePeople, and others.

Health and WellnessEach program partner is committed to teaching healthy lifestyles and social interactions to assist people of all ages and abilities in leading productive and fulfilling lives. Volunteers can work with teens at the Boys and Girls Club of Malibu, assist in activities for seniors at WISE & Healthy Aging, establish relationships and develop life skills with special needs teens and adults with Hand in Hand, Creative Steps, and Equine Therapy organizations as well as mentor high school students through Waves of Innovation winner College Connections.

Hunger and HomelessnessThe latest homelessness counts for Ventura and L.A. Counties show a dramatic increase in this population. The Volunteer Center partners with Habitat for Humanity and The Kingdom Center in Ventura County to help transition people into homes, FOOD Share and Food Forward to provide food to those who are hungry, and several of the Missions on Skid Row to assist in their holistic programs trying to get people off the streets.

Academics and ServiceThe scholarship of community engagement increases each year as more academic courses incorporate service experiences in the community. Student service-learning advocates support faculty and students engaged in these courses. In addition to the advocates, the Volunteer Center provides grants, workshops, and consultations for engaged faculty.

EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION

JumpstartThe Jumpstart program is working toward the day when every child in America will enter school prepared to succeed. Members of the Jumpstart Corps serve preschool children in early-childhood learning centers, developing relationships with the children, family, and teachers. Students are placed on a Jumpstart team and commit to serve 300 hours over the academic year. Participants earn their full work-study award and receive an additional Americorps education award.
