The group, the Schaapkraal Civic and Envi- ronmental Association (SCEA), are con- cerned that developers and property specula- tors could slowly drive farmers out of the area by buying up land and having it rezoned for uses other than farming. Nazeer Sonday, secretary of the SCEA, says around 600ha of the area’s 3 000ha have al- ready been taken out of the hands of farmers. “There is 600ha which are still available to farm in the future, almost straight away, but the problem is that it is being held in the hands of developers who want to put up hous- ing there,” says Sonday. “Developers and speculators are offering farmers ridiculous sums of money for their property. You must remember that agricul- tural land is not as expensive as industrial and commercial land or land for housing.” He adds: “They are taking the land out of production and then going to the City to say the land should be used for housing.” The SCEA recently met with Anton Bredell, MEC for Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, about dumping in the area. Sonday took the opportunity to present Bredell with a study (Philippi Horticultural Area – A City Asset or Potential Development Node?) on how farming in the PHA affects food security on the Cape Flats. The study was funded by an organisation called Rooftops Canada and carried out by re- searchers from the UCT office of the African Centre for Cities. Rooftops Canada works to improve housing conditions. They found that farmers in the PHA have increased production and grow around 100 000 tonnes of fresh produce each year. It also found that the area plays a major role in food security in areas adjacent to it through supplying small retailers and the es- timated 2 000 tonnes of produce given away to farm workers each year. Sonday says Schaapkraal farmers can pro- vide fresh produce to the Cape Flats at a lower cost than farmers further away from Cape Town and are also a large employer. “Much of the food, about 20%, is going into the spaza shops and small shops on the Cape Flats,” says Sonday. “The food is going directly to hawkers and spaza shops and because it is very close to where people are living the cost of transport is very minimal. If we had to produce this food on the periphery of Cape Town the cost is going to quadruple. You have to factor in transport cost. The other side is that we em- ploy between 2 500 and 4 000 workers.” Bredell received the 70-page document on Monday 17 September when he met with the organisation. He described the meeting as “good and posi- tive” and said the study was being examined by his department. “I have instructed my department to work closely with the association and the other 700 people on the database,” says Bredell. The four working groups that have been set up are due to report back by the end of next month, he adds. Remembering a great motherRemembering a great motherDear reader,

I once again dedicate my col-umn to my beautiful, coura-geousmother who passed away17 days ago after living withbreast cancer for years.

I also dedicate this column toall those who have lost theirmothers and to every individu-al and organisation champion-ing the fight against cancer.

This is the most difficultpiece of writing I’ve had to doin my 20-year career and I amwriting every word with a broken heart thatyearns for my mother.

The day my mom died, my entire worldceased to exist and after two weeks of unbri-dled grieving, my pain at losing my belovedmother is as intense as the day she was diag-nosed with cancer.

I am not alone in my loss asmy mother left behind a legacyof love, generosity, inspirationand tenacity.

In our home, she advocatedthe importance of spiritualityand education.

She touched the lives ofmany– often in ways her husbandand six children learned of onlyafter her death.

My mother inspired heryounger sister to work andmake her own money in an erawhen women stayed at home.

My mother always had kind words to sayabout others, regularly sentmonetary gifts tothe mosque, offered a warmmeal and grocer-ies to anyone who stepped into our home andalways gave the gift of her smile, even whenshe had the most excruciating pain.

I was blessed to have slept beside mymoth-

er the last night of her life and to remainwithher until the end.

This was painful, but I would not have hadit any other way.

The day before my mother died, many ofher neighbours visited and said prayers ather bedside.

Nearly everyone left crying. This is how my mother touched lives.Yes, she was a fiery, strong, independent,

smart woman who achieved her goals andwho, even throughout her illness, remainedthe matriarch, giving her family clear direc-tives.

At the same time, mymotherwas a soft, lov-ing, deeply-caring wife, mother, grandmoth-er, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, friendand neighbour.

My family and I continue to draw strengthfrom one another, and from the torrent oflove, support and compassion from relatives, friends and colleagues – for which we are

very grateful.Among themany beautiful messages we’ve

received, were these poignant words: “Mymother is the keeper of my childhood and thehistorian of my life...”

The keeper of my childhood is gone; thatchapter of my life has closed.

My mother was my mummy, my bestfriend,my rolemodel,my confidante,my fan,my financial advisor, my counsellor.

She lovedme inawaynoother canandwill.I have been truly blessed and honoured to

have had her asmymother andwill continueto love and cherish her and my memories ofher, forever.

Till next time, go well!ConnectED is a weekly column by Peo-

RESIDENTS affected by the City ofCape Town’s second phase rental stockupgrade in Ottery have settled into thetemporary village.

This despite a suspected turf war be-tween gangs operating on opposite sidesof Bruce Avenue, as well as alleged intimi-dation from residents opposed to the Com-munity Rental Units (CRU) upgrade. Theproject was launched in November 2010.

The refurbishment of Ottery’s so-calledmarble flats forms part of a City project, which will see 10 low-income areas acrossthe Peninsula revamped in a national up-grade pilot project. Other areas includeKewtown, Manenberg, Hanover Park,Heideveld, Woodlands, Scottsdene, Con-naught, Uitsig and The Range, involvingaround 43 500 rental units.

All 43 of the four-storey blocks betweenDaniel Avenue and Ivan Road are in linefor an upgrade, with repairs to blockedsewers, plumbing installations, deterio-

rating staircases, leaking roofs, fascias, gutters, down pipes, doors and windows, costing the City around R100m.

But the community of Ottery were indanger of losing the development, saysWard councillor Melanie Arendse. “Theongoing gang violence and the intimida-tion from residents has led to the projectbeing two months behind schedule,” shesays.

“And the City’s Housing Department in-dicated that we were on the verge of losingthe project because of this.”

According to Arendse she visited thehomes of Horizon View residents – whosehomes will be the first to be upgraded inPhase 2 – and explained the situation tothem.

“They were adamant that they would bemoving to the temporary village.”

The residents moved into their tempo-rary homes on Thursday and Friday.

Resident Wilhemina Petersen says: “Itreally is nice livinghere – I feel as if I couldlive here forever. I feel safer and morecomfortable.”

Another resident, Sharon Petersen, tells People’s Post, despite being “nervousand afraid”, she wanted to move to thetemporary village “after years of living interrible conditions. I will not allow peoplewith different agendas to stand in the wayof my home being upgraded.”

And, with the violence between gangscontinuing, the City has also beefed up se-curity at the temporary village, which issituated behind the Bruce Road Multipur-pose Centre and between the areas whichare believed to be affected by the gang vio-lence.

The improvements to security includeIBR cladding to the security-graded pali-sade fencing, with razor coil at the top; twoadditional security guards will monitorthe perimeter fence and entrance, bring-ing the tally to 12 security officials; all se-curity officials are armedandhave radios;a satellite station, with an upper floorcompartment for a lookout point for LawEnforcement and a blue light; random ve-hicle checks and the improvement of floodlights.

Taking up battle of addictionTTakingaking upup battlebattle ofof addictionaddictionJUANITA WILLIAMS

THE battle against substanceabuse has been bolstered byHopeHouseAddiction Counsel-ling Centre.

It was officially opened by May-or Patricia de Lille on Thursday.

The centre, on the corner ofMain and Military roads, has awaiting list of clients, mostly chil-dren, looking for guidance in theirbattle against drugs.

De Lille said: “We have beenfighting substance abuse for manyyears and I was very upset by theheadlines in the Cape Times aboutbabies affected by mothers addict-ed to tik. Without interventionpeople will go into a downwardspiral. This damages the familyand robs people of their full poten-tial. Small babies have no choicebut to absorb what their mothersare eating and at six weeks thebrain damage is permanent. It isunfair that young children’s fu-tures are jeopardised by the actionof the parents.”

About 1 000 babies are reportedto be born to mothers addicted totik.

De Lille called for all the NGOsand NPOs to work together asthere is a lack of coordination tomonitor the impact of the preven-tion work being done.

“No one can do it alone, we needa joint effort to heal and assist the

vulnerable people of the city. There is no easy way to recovery, and after rehabilitation there is noongoing support. We must up ourgame on the prevention side.”

The City launched the Don’tStart, Be Smart campaign twomonths ago and there’s a 24-hour/seven days a week helpline staffed

by professionals (0800 435 748).“But these interventions are not

enough to prevent the scourge ofdrugs. We need the full might ofthe law against merchants. It isnot normal for merchants to livein the same street as law-abidingcitizens, so that drugs can bebought two doors away; it is

wrong.”Provincial education minister

Donald Grant added that the costof prevention is “so much lessthan that of rehabilitation”.

“This is a war we simply haveto win. Law Enforcement say 93%of the drugs are imported. Wemust work on demand and get the

children to say ‘no’ to drugs andalcohol and make informed choic-es.

Hope House chairperson GeoffFox explains: “We reach out to thefallen and the weak and guide theconfused with various counsellingservices – whether it’s stress andanger management or trauma.”

“Addiction,” he says, “is my pri-mary focus.”

Judy Strickland, the founder ofHope House Counselling Services, says this is the centre’s ninth year.“Last year the centre completed3 159 sessions.”

The centre has 40 volunteercounsellors and seven volunteersat the Addictions Centre. Theteam includes a psychologist, three social workers and addic-tion specialist Shaun Shelly.

“There is a waiting list of 20 chil-dren to be counselled because wedon’t have enough volunteers. Werun youth-at-risk support groupsat schools and anger managementsessions. Recently the MakingPeace with the Past workshopshave helped childcare workers inKhayelitsha to deal with negativeissues.”

Shelly has designed a pro-gramme to help people overcomeaddiction through early recovery, learning relapse prevention skillsand recognising problems thatlead to addiction. Contact the cen-tre on (021) 701 9742 or visitwww.hopehouse.org.za.

BEING asked to journal the Journeyof Hope Breast Cancer Ride 2012 is anopportunity of a lifetime. I accept thatGod chose this experience to connecton a personal level with breast cancersurvivors.

Journey of Hope 2012 is a motorcycleride undertaken by, among others, agroup of breast cancer survivors. Theride kicked off on Saturday 6 Octoberfrom Amanzingwe in Broederstroom, through the Eastern Free State, KZN andthen into Ushaka Marineworld in Dur-ban on Saturday 13 October where it willend. The aim of the ride is to raise aware-ness of breast cancer and funds, as wellas spread a message of hope.

I dedicate this journey to my friendsElaine Page and Helen Stutz, and to thememory of Ahmina Miller and MariamAbbass.

On this journey I met a man and wom-en – each with their own story of how thedisease has impacted their lives, andthose of families and friends.

Breast cancer survivor Zelda Erasmushas a path of faith, perseverance, supportand love. Helena Nell’s path has taughther life is preparation for eternity; tograb life with both hands and make itcount. Her story is one of hardship as shelost a son to cancer. She believes there’sno place for cancer in her life; her sayingis that she lives at 1 Defeat Street.

Cancer, she says, needs to be fought ona mental and spiritual level and she has

no fear; she fears only God! Kathy Mal-herbe hopes to help at least one womanto save her life. Each day is a blessing forHeleen Scholtz. Lorraine Leburu lived ahealthy, disciplined life and never be-lieved cancerwas forherpeople.Nowherstory is a testimony, a channel and a ves-sel to many. Nonki Rampoporo believedcancer would never affect her as it wasan elderly people’s disease. Now she be-lieves God is bigger and He can destroythe disease. She refuses to live innegativ-ity and chooses to embrace life. JulieKemp, who loves biking, inspireswomenthrough her public speaking. She willtake her story globally to educate peopleon the plight of cancer.

Timothy Mlenje never thought ofbreast cancer when he found a lump inhis breast. His advice is that everyone isvulnerable, check your body, report any-thing strange. Our 351km journey tookusfrom Johannesburg to Midrand, thenVosloorus, Heidelberg, Villiers, Frank-fort and Reitz. Very bad roads took us onto beautiful Bethlehem – a place withgreat affinity because of thename. It gaveme new strength and inspiration to tack-le the outreach together.

Pelican Park development recipients selectedLIAM MOSES

AGROUPof 2 000 people have been select-ed as the possible recipients of houses ina complex planned for Pelican Park.

The development will see three differenttypes of houses built and either sold on theopenmarket, sold as gap housing or allocatedto beneficiaries on the City of Cape Town’shousing database. The 2 000 peoplewill nowbe interviewed by

the City to determine if they qualify for thehousing. Councillor Ernest Sonnenberg,Mayco Member for Human Settlements, saysthat the potential recipients will be assessedbased on a set of requirements.“Theywill be informed of the requirements

and criteria of being granted a subsidy and

will have to provide the information requiredto complete an application,” says Sonnen-berg.He adds they will be selected on the stand-

ard State housing subsidy criteria: theymustbe a South African citizen, 18 years or older, have dependants, the total household incomemust be less than R3 501 a month and neitherspouse must have ever owned property any-where in South Africa before. In total, 3 200 houses will be built in the de-

velopment, 2 100 of those houses are subsi-dised andwill be awarded to peoplewhomeetthe housing criteria, while 760 will be sold asgap houses and 320 on the open market. In order to be classified as gap housing, the

bond required to purchase the house needsto be affordable tohouseholdswith an incomeof between R3 501 and R15 000.

Also, 70 of the houses will be built with aspace for the owner to run a shop or anothersmall business. The part of the complex to contain market

housing will be called On the Vlei, while thegapand subsidisedhouseswill benamedNewHorizons.Sonnenberg says only 2 000 people have

been selected for the 2 100 subsidised housed.“We reserved the buffer of 100 for special

cases which might arise between now andwhen the project is completed and also in or-der to accommodate those peoplewho qualifybut have not kept their contact details up todate. In such cases individuals might only re-alise after the project gets going that theycould potentially qualify for a house.”Also, 60% of the subsidised houses will be

allocated to people living in surrounding are-

as, with the remainder sourced from acrosstheMetropole. The City hasmade peoplewhohave been on the housing list the longest apriority. The open market houses will sell from

R480 000, while the semi-detached gap housesfrom R290 000 and the house shops forR288 000. Both the normal and house shopversion of the gap houses will be available toanyone with a household income of betweenR3 501 and R15 000.Sonnenberg says people who earn around

R9 000 will qualify for a bond on the gap hous-es, provided theymeet the bank’s other crite-ria.Planning for thedevelopment started about

nine years ago and infrastructure construc-tion will start within the next two months. The first houses will be completed in June.

isa Fuzile says South Afri-cans are being sold dodgy fu-neral policies. People’s Postinterns Tarren-Lee Habel-gaarn and Luzuko Zinipolled the readers about theirviews on funeral policies.

TOOYOUNG:Craig Vander Rosisays hedoesn’tknowmuchabout funeral policies. “Idon’t havea funeralpolicy because I don’t knowmuchabout it and I’m too young to haveit.”

BE CAREFUL: Ebrahim Arendsesays he has a funeral policy butpeople should watch out. “Todayyou can’t trust anyone becauseyou can pay for months and thenthey disappear when you needthem.”

SATISFIED:YvonneKelly saysshe ishappywith herfuneralpolicy, but addssome policies arescams.“Theypaidme outwhen I claimed. Thereare some scams, but I have notbeen scammed. Government cancontribute by providing funeralpolicies for the poor.”

STOP SCAMS: Kiara Edson believes some funeral policies fail topaywhen the time comes. “Scamming is wrong because some funeral policies promise people benefits, but when it is time to pay, they don’t and leave families desperate.”

SECURITY: CharleiMbalandasays it isimportantto save forthe dayyou die asanythingcan happen andyou don’twant yourfamily tohave to worry. “It is very calmingknowing that if I must get shot today my family can go to the bankand there will be money available.”

BEALERT:Kimé Elrick saysit is veryimportant tohave a funeral policy, butadds thatpeoplemust be aware of being scammed.“I would advise all people to geta funeral policy, but everyoneshould make sure their policy islegitimate.”

NECESSITY: Pamella Gacafeels it isessentialthat people have afuneralpolicy.“I’m fromthe Eastern Capeand working in Cape Town so itis very important for me to havea funeral policy because to transport the body to the Eastern Capecan cost up R3000 alone.”

PEACE OFMIND: BenHyatt thinksit is good tohave a funeral policy sothat yourfamily canbe at easeand not haveto worryabout costs.“It takes the stress away fromloved ones once you’re gone. Ithink people should start havingone from the age of 40 and up.”

Truck stopIN THE early 1990s, Mitchell’s Plain was cor-doned off by minibus taxis. People weretrapped. Traffic came to a standstill. Roadsled to nowhere. Nobody could get in. Nobodycould get out. Fewwent towork.Allwere heldransom by the unified action of taxi drivers.Thosewere the dyingmoments of the strug-

gle days. People on the Cape Flats know itwell. The country burned; it was a looters’paradise; people got hurt. That was the daytaxis ruled the roads of the biggest Colouredtownship in the country.Fast-forward to the past two weeks. The ac-

tions of truck drivers nationwide now holdthe country captive. Goods are not beingtransported. If the strike by SA Transport and Allied

Workers Union (Satawu) continues, essentialservices will come to a grinding halt. Fewwould remain unaffected by this action. These concerns are already being feared.Availability of rawmaterials formanufactur-ing; goods for essential, life-saving services, like medical equipment; food; packaging. Insome small way – or another – each personwill feel the effects of the truck drivers’ strikeas they hold out for their pay hike demands. The strike is reported to cost the transport

industry R1bn in revenue each week.In the Cape, three people, a child among

them, were hurt and three trucks were setalight. Satawu denies involvement in vio-lence, but has reportedly called on rail andport workers for support of a secondarystrike. It will cripple the country. Somemay be re-

minded of the days when people were encour-aged to hoard baked beans – then in anticipa-tion of the “swart gevaar”, now because theresimply may be no stock to replenish storeshelves. We can build a nation only with like-minded people. Even so, everyone has theright to a fair salary.Let’s hope the strike comes to a quick con-

clusion.

‘Pitte’ isnot that‘harmless’I HAVE read the letter “‘Pitte’ is soharmless” (People’s Post, 2 Octo-ber). Hismates call him “Pitte Kop”and he is not as harmless as youmay think. When he has a fewdrinks in he gets quite aggressiveand argumentative.A while back, one Sunday after-

noon, I was away from the housewhen he climbed over my high gar-den wall using his push trolley andstole an engine block frommy prop-erty. At first I did not know it washim who had stolen it.On a Monday morning I went to

the scrap yards in the Ottery/Wet-ton area. At the fourth scrap yardI saw him chopping away at the en-gine block removing the alumini-um fromthemetal.Whenhe sawmecoming, he got up and started run-ning. One of hismateswhowas alsothere said: “It was him who stole it,sir.” I called the police, who arrest-ed him after finding him hiding inthe bushes behind the scrap yard. Not long afterwards, he camepast

my place when I was in my drive-way and he said something to me.I told him to just keep on walkingandhe started getting aggressive to-wards me. I said I would give hima smack. He said: “Hit me and I’lllay a charge against you. I knowmyrights.”There must be a reason why that

chap gave him a hiding (“Homelessmanpistol-whipped inOttery”,Peo-ple’s Post, 25 September).ANONYMOUSOttery

Alternative way to look at thingsWHILE stationed at Table Bay Harbour as a po-lice officer I realised that, in fighting crime, youhave to try out resources and techniques to out-smart criminals.I (used) binoculars and realised it would be

a permanent resource in my police vehicle. Itgave me the edge to observe the layout of myprecinct from a distance.I have arrested many an unsuspecting, con-

fused criminal committing a crime and I wasnot even nearby, but the criminal was right infront of me – thanks to the powerful binoculars.Night vision binoculars can be used after

dark.

In the past, I have tried to sell this practiceto our law enforcement agencies, without suc-cess.The community is continuously asked to help

in the fight against crime and here is my contri-bution. If this proposal is accepted it has to beextensively advertised so criminals (know) theyare being watched.I have started this campaign in conjunction

with Lansdowne police. I hope this time the pro-posal I am forwarding receives the practicalcredit it deserves.KEITH BLAKEOttery

Santos fold against Black AcesSantos fold against Black AcesLIAM MOSES

to improve on. We are a young and inexperi-enced team with an experienced back bone, but the young ones are determined,” saysNooij.“The performance was a little disappoint-

ing.We started very nervous andwewere notcomfortable on the ball.”Both teams started the game shakily and

played far too many long balls in the opening20 minutes. When the teams finally shook offtheir early season rust and settled into thegame, around the 35 minute mark, Santosstarted to dominate possession and territory. After several minutes of patient build-ups,

the hosts fashioned their first chance from acounter-attacking move.Stalwart TyroneArendse putEdwinSitayi-

tayi through on goal, with a well weightedthrough ball. The forward squared the ball

for winger Salmaan King. However, a last-ditch tackle stopped King

from striking the ball and Aces respondedwith their own counter attack. After break-ing into the Santos box, a Black Aces playerwas judged to have been fouled and the refe-ree awarded a penalty.Esau Metsweni stepped up and casually

struck the ball past Santos keeper Pa DembaTouray, into the top right hand corner of thenet to take the lead in the 44th minute.Santos continued to dominate in the re-

maining minutes of the half, but could notfashion any further chances before the break. They seemed invigorated when they re-

turned after half-time and came close to level-ling matters after just 30 seconds. Sitayitayimanaged to lose his marker again, but shotstraight at the keeper after receiving the ball

in space, on the edge of the box.The striker was proving to be a constant

danger to the Aces defence, and five minuteslater he headed a cross narrowlywide of goal, after climbing highest to meet a teasing ballfrom King. Black Aces seemed content to siton their lead and play on the counter, andtheywould have beenmade to pay had Santosnot squandered their chances.Nooij bemoaned his team’s lack of compo-

sure in front goal and blamed the poor finish-ing for the loss.“After a quiet 20 minutes we got control of

the match and dominated, but then you haveto score goals,” says Nooij.“Unfortunately we got a penalty against us

fromone of their few attacks into our box, butwe got the opportunities. We dominated thesecond half, but we did not score a goal. Inthis league, and any other league, you needto score goals to win matches.”TheDutch coach refused to speculate onhis

team’s chances of earning promotion, sayingthere were still “29 games to go”.

Milano kicks-off with a drawMilano kicks-off with a drawLIAM MOSES

NEWLY PROMOTED Milano Unitedkicked off their first season in the Nation-al First Division with a morale boostingdraw with Port Elizabeth side United FCat the Wynberg Military Base on Sunday.

TheGrassyParkbased teamearnedpromo-tion to the second tier of SouthAfricanprofes-sional football after winning the WesternCape VodacomLeague last season and finish-ing second at the national promotion playoffsin July.Head coach Theo Henpe was pleased with

thematch result and performance and is con-fident his troops can perform at a higher lev-el.“The first game of any season is obviously

very difficult. I thought the guys looked very

capable and I think we are definitely able ofdoing a little bit more,” says Henpe.“I don’t thinkwe played to our best, but I’m

happy with the point. We can definitely im-prove our striking ability. I thinkwe are lack-ing a bit up front, but our guys up front cando better and give a little bit more.”The game started at a frantic pace, with

players from both sides flying into tacklesand sprinting to every loose ball.Milanowere the first to settle and they took

the lead just seven minutes into the game, af-ter a fast counter-attack down the right flank.WingLesvinStoffels sent a teasing cross in-

to the box and Milano striker Keanan Tho-mas rose above goalkeeper BonganiMpandleand a defender to head the ball against thebase of the far post. Luckilyfor Milano, captain Keenin Lesch was on

hand to tap the ball into the open net.

The pace of the match did not slow downafter the goal andMilano continued to threat-en through Stoffels, Thomas and left wingDevon Saal. The visitorsmatched their hosts in the pos-

session stakes, but couldn’t breach Milano’sorganised defence.United FC were a much improved team

when they returned from half-time and im-mediately started dominating possession andterritory.Milano failed to match the intensity and

work rate of the first half and struggled to getout of their own half. After several minutes the pressure finally

told and United found an equaliser. Tshware-lo Bereng rose above the Milano defence andnodded awell placed cross past aMilano goal-keeper Sherwyn Naicker in the 20th minute.Even the goal could not wake Milano from

their second half slumber and they spent therest of thematch defending deeply and tryingto play on the counter. Neither side was ableto break the deadlock.Henpe believes his chargers’ inability to

hold onto possession is to blame for the poorsecond-half performance.“I think my team gave away a lot of posses-

sionwithout any pressure. I think the posses-sion part was a little bit disappointing, be-cause we are capable of playing a lot betterthan that,” says Henpe.“I don’t think we lacked match fitness, we

have had a long pre-season. The first gamewas always going to be telling.”Milano will face former Absa Premiership

side Jomo Cosmos in their next game in twoweeks. Henpe believes his side will be able toget one over on their more experienced oppo-nents.
