The Steenberg are still investigating the matter, and no arrests have been made in con- nection with the incident, which occurred in Burnstyne Road. Francis Galant, homeowner, is adamant that the two Wendy houses in her back yard were petrol-bombed. “I was woken up by noises. I heard someone on the roof. Then I looked through the win- dow and saw a man with something in his hand; he threw it on the roof of the Wendy house belonging to my elderly uncle. I heard a bang, and then the flames started.” Galant called out to her son, his family and her uncle, who were asleep at the time, to get out of their homes. Thankfully, they managed to escape the flames. The Wendy houses, though, were burnt to the ground, and the family lost all of their be- longings. Nicolette Galant, who stayed in one of the Wendy houses with her husband, four chil- dren and sister, believes the incident was gang-related and wasn’t intended for her fam- ily. “They burned the wrong house. They were looking for another guy. They thought he was living here, but he wasn’t.” Nicolette says the perpetrator threw three bombs. “At about 01:00 I heard the first petrol bomb, then I heard two more go off.” People’s Post visited the fami- ly’s plot last Wednesday. Black, burnt rubble, gathered up in three big mounds, was all that remained in the back yard. Explaining what she did when she realised her home was burning, Nicolette says, “I told my children to get out. I was so confused I didn’t even notice my youngest son [7] was still in the house, but luckily my sister ran back in and found him.” Theo Layne, commander of the Goodwood Fire Station, says his officers responded to the fire. “We were called out and arrived on the scene at 01:12 . The fire was out at 01:38. There was no threat to other houses, and the struc- tures were purposely set alight.” Steenberg police spokesperson Warrant Of- ficer Hermanus van Dyk could not yet say whether officers felt the incident was gang re- lated or that a petrol bomb had been used. “In- vestigations are still ongoing,” he says. Kevin Southgate, chairper- son for the Steenberg Communi- ty Police Forum, was not aware of the fire, but says: “You can’t assume the incident was gang related. You need solid infor- mation and evidence to prove that.” With regards to gang-related attacks in the area, Southgate believes police have the situa- tion “under control”, and says no new incidents have been re- ported. “Police have the right measures in place, and there are plans to tackle the gang prob- lem in the area,” says Southgate. Southgate does not rule out the possibility that the fire was the result of gang retaliation, but he encourages a sober approach in the ab- sence of police confirmation. “Nothing has been confirmed until real evi- dence is provided to the police,” he says. While the police attempt to get to the bot- tom of the matter, the family are trying to re- build their lives. “I am upset because I almost lost my child,” says Nicolette. “How would that person who threw the bomb have felt if the same thing happened to his family?” If anybody is interested in donating some- thing to the family, including blankets, cloth- ing or food, contact ward councillor Shanen Rossouw on 078 129 1270. Traffic officers or tax collectors?ONE fine Sunday morning in May I parked

in Main Road, Fish Hoek, while I dashed in-to the bank to use the ATM. Five minutes laterthere was a ticket on my car for parking in aloading zone. The fine was to be R200.

It was obviously a mistake. There was no incon-venience to anybody. There was no danger to vehi-cle or pedestrian.

People have always parked in these loading zoneson Sundays and at night, andif there was to be some changeof policy, surely there wouldbe a warning and an explana-tion. A simple courtesy slipunder a windscreen wiperwould have done the trick.

That’s just good public rela-tions. That’s how you buildand retain good relations withratepayers.

I dashed off an email to themunicipality, pointing out(rather briskly, I must admit)that the ticket was unreasona-ble and more likely to gener-ate resentment than achieveany good purpose.

I was asked to fax throughthe parking ticket and this, to-gether with my note, would beused as my representationagainst the fine.

That done I forgot about thewhole matter. I had no doubtthat wiser city officials wouldsort it out, perhaps even havea word with the errant trafficofficer about excessive zeal and how counterproduc-tive it could be.

My attitude changed, however, when a “finalwarning” arrived in the post. Yes, they really want-ed their R200.

It was confirmation that it was all about money

and not road safety or an attempt to protect therights of delivery services because there are noneat 10.30 on a Sunday morning in Fish Hoek or any-where else.

Now R200 would buy a poor pensioner 30 loavesof plain brown bread, enough to last him for twomonths. And there are a lot of pensioners in FishHoek. All good soft targets!

Frankly, I wondered if it was revenge for a columnI wrote on how the city was spending R150 000 on

hopelessly overpowered mo-torbikes for the traffic depart-ment when they could buymore suitable machines forhalf the price.

But no, the manager of Pickn Pay also got a ticket, and Idoubt whether he has givensimilar offence.

Now I strongly support vig-orous road safety enforce-ment, and I have even paidspeeding fines (like a sinful72km/h on New Boys Drive)without a murmur.

It is now clear to me that weare not dealing with traffic of-ficers.

They are tax collectors. Dothey get commission like thehated Roman tax collectors ofold, or do they just have targetsto meet?

I don’t know, but I can tellyou that they are giving roadsafety campaigns a bad name. They are undermining thecredibility of the city and its

law enforcement efforts. They are destroying good relations between the

public and officials who have some tough jobs to do.But the council does not seem to care, as long as

they get their money. Is this how the city works for you?

Take a train back in timeDR FRANCOIS CLEOPHAS

TRAINS have come a long way inCape Town since they first hit thetracks over 100 years ago.

By 1990, the railway line be-tween the city centre and Simon’sTown had been going for a century– a fact celebrated in a brochurepublished by the Cape Town Herit-age Trust (CTHT).

Between 1890 and 2011, thou-sands of commuters travelled bytrain between the two stations, and many older people must havewitnessed the changes over time.

Thanks to the CTHT, youngergenerations too can look back intime and envision what Plum-stead, Steurhof, Diep River,Heathfield and Retreat RailwayStations looked like in the past.

PlumsteadWhen the line was extended

from Wynberg to Muizenberg inDecember 1882, it was decidedthere should be a stopping place(not a station) at Plumstead, which was originally called Sus-sex Place.

It handled the fruit traffic of theConstan-tia Valley, and thegoodssheds

nearthe sta-tion are a remainder of what wasstill largely agricultural land untilthe 1920s.

In 1882, the single line was re-placed with a double one.

Steurhof

Opened on 24 December 1934,this station was meant to serve theresidential area that was begin-ning to grow between Plumsteadand Diep River.

Diep RiverThe line here crosses a shallow

stream called, ironically, DiepRiver, and this station was one of

two builton the linebetweenWynbergand Mui-zenberg in1882. Pas-

sengers sometimes broke theirjourney at Rathfelders, a coachinginn that stood near the present-day Eaton Convalescent Home.

HeathfieldNamed after the many varieties

of heath that grow there, Heath-field station was opened in 1913 toassist passengers on the inter-change of the line to Ottery.

RetreatRetreat station is the midpoint

of the line to Simon’s Town, andwas the second station opened in1882.

The railway line was not onlya mode of transport, but a symbolof hurt.

It became the dividing line forthe Group Areas Act, which setout separate areas for differentracial groups to live in.

Prior to the 1950s, people of allraces lived on either side of therailway line.

Frack attackTERESA FISCHER

GASWALK, a protest march againstfracking, took place on Women’s Day

last Tuesday, with about 200 protesterstaking to the streets of Cape Town.

Fracking refers to a process used to extractnatural gas from deposits of hard rock; thecomplicated procedure involves the use ofdrilling, explosives and a liquid mixture ofchemicals designed to force gas from the new-ly-fractured rock to the surface. It is current-ly in the spotlight because petrochemical gi-ant Royal Dutch Shell has application to ex-plore the Karoo for shale gas.

Last Tuesday’s event was initiated by pho-tographer Kian Erikson, in partnership withnon-profit organisations Climate JusticeCampaign and Earthlife Africa CT.

According to the organisers, it aimed toraise awareness around the “threat” frackingposes to the most vulnerable in society.

“The hydraulic fracturing planned in mostof South Africa’s land mass, from the Karooto the Drakensberg, directly threatens thequality of our air and water, and thereby thehealth and wellbeing of our people,” says Mu-na Lakhani of Earthlife Africa.

“Resource extraction has made corpora-tions and an elite rich, but local communitiesremain poor, and are most at risk from theenvironmental destruction caused by fossilfuel extraction.”

Erikson says, worldwide, more and morepeople are calling for a global ban on fracking– a call that is being echoed in South Africa.Gaswalk organisers say the process requiresenormous quantities of water mixed with tox-ic chemicals, and that Shell has not yet indi-

cated where it will get this water, or how itproposes to dispose of the waste water.

“Thedisposal of frackingwastewater posesan additional threat of water contamina-tion,” says Marina Louw of the Climate Jus-tice Campaign.

“The disposal methods used in the USA,which include injecting it deep underground, open evaporation ponds, trucking the wastewater to municipal water plants, dischargingit into rivers, spraying it onto roads andfields, et cetera, all pose serious risks to localcommunities.”

Louw says there is still a moratorium onall fracking applications.

According to newspaper reports, MineralResources minister Susan Shabangu has saida team tasked with studying the concernsaround fracking will give feedback soon.

Louw says environmental groups do nothave much faith in the credibility of the taskteam to make an informed decision as, shesays, the Department of Water and Environ-mental Affairs was not included on the team.

Further to this, Erikson claims South Afri-cans are being kept in the dark about who thetask team consists of, and that the report is

not being made available to South African cit-izens.

“I fear government is merely going throughthe motions, and that shale gas explorationis inevitable.” For more information aboutthis campaign, visit the “Chase Shell Oil outof the Karoo” page on Facebook.

The peril of overcrowded trainsAS the train pulls into Heathfield Stationon the Wynberg line, commuters gettingoff the Cape Flats line board the SouthernSuburbs line, and by then the train is sofull that the third-class passengers crowdthe first-class carriages.

We find it difficult to disembark atHeathfield station because the Metrorailpassengers are waiting to push their wayinto the coach.

Last night again on the 16:56 train fromCape Town the above happened. Thedoors are left open, the passengers arehanging out of the carriages and it is SO,SO dangerous. When is this all going toSTOP?.

I am so tired of asking where the securi-ty staff and Metrorail police are during

peak hours. And what is worse, the guys wait until

the train starts pulling away and then tryto jump the train.

Just last week on the Northern line Iwas told that someone trying to run forthe train slipped and was killed on theMonte Vista Line.

Well, I saw a passenger jump the trainas it was pulling away. They have no con-ception of the speed of the trains.

Amazing – the next train arrives atHeathield only six minutes after this one,and if you employ staff on Heathfield Sta-tion heading out of Cape Town to managethe crowds, it might help. There are stilldroves of guys sitting between carriages.RACHAEL GEORGE

Great service in RetreatI FIRMLY believe in praising as loudly andquickly as we criticise, and I would really ap-preciate it if you could publish my letterabout Securi Store in Retreat. They are total-ly amazing, and people should know abouttheir service.

I am currently renting storage space at Se-curi Store in Evelyn Road in Retreat, and Iam completely blown away by the service Ireceive.

Patrick and the guys who work with himin the units carried every item into the stor-age and made sure it was packed how andwhere I wanted it.

I did not have to lift a thing, and all of mypossessions were treated with the utmostcare.

Whenever I arrive to retrieve somethingor drop another few items off, I am greetedlike a friend and treated with respect. I can-not recommend this company highlyenough, but to top it all off their rates are bet-ter far than anyone else in the Southern Sub-urbs that I received quotes from. Manythanks to everyone at Securi Store.KAREN VERMAAK AND PHILIP VANSTADENRetreat

Survey raises suspicionON two separate occasionsrecently, I have received tele-phone calls on my homephone from an “independentresearch company” conduct-ing a survey. The person firstasks if theymayaddress a fewquestions about my lifestyleand then warns that the con-versation may be recorded. The questions are along thelines of: “Have you experi-enced any crime recently in

your area?” “No? Oh thereare patrols?” “What do youthink of the food prices?”“Where do you shop? Pick nPay, Checkers or Wool-worths?” “Are you betweenthe ages of 35 and 75?” “Whatwork do you do?” “What doesyour husband do?”

At this point, when I saidthat I did not think it was nec-essary to answer such details, the caller put the phone down

without thanking me for mytime.

I am certain that this “com-pany” is calling to glean per-sonal information that maybe used for possible crime ata later stage. Please warnreaders that they should becareful who they speak to,and what answers they giveregarding their daily habits.GENEÉ RODINISPinelands

WHEN Ajax Cape Town take to thefield to face Maritzburg United atCape Town Stadium tomorrow(Wednesday) evening, they will belooking to forget about the lasttime the two sides met at that verystadium.

It was just nearly three months agowhen the hearts and hopes of everyAjax CT player, staffer and supporterwere shattered after a vital mistake bythen goalkeeper, Hans Vonk, led to agoal for the Pietermaritzburg-basedteam and saw the Cape side losing thePSL title because of the 2-2 draw.

And with the new season underway,Maarten Stekelenburg’s chargers willalso be looking to forget their seasonopener, which saw them go down 2-0to Platinum Stars in Rustenberg thispast weekend. Two goals by Stars mid-fielder Lantshane Phalane in the firsthalf sealed the fate of the Urban Warri-ors.

Despite several attempts at scoring,Ajax CT were unable turn their at-tacks into goals, and they had to leavethe Royal Bafokeng Stadium goalless.

A positive for the Parow-based teamis the news that Dutch goalkeeperSander Westerveld has signed a two-year contract with the Urban Warri-ors. The former Liverpool and Ever-ton player brings a wealth of experi-ence to the Cape side, which includes

stints at FC Twente, Real Sociedadand Monza.

Westerveld has been in talks withAjax management since last monthand arrived in Cape Town on Satur-day.

Westerveld will, however, not fea-ture in tomorrow evening’s match ashe still needs to sort out a few glitcheswith his work permit. Even so, had hiswork permit been in order, the coach-ing staff announced that Westerveldwould not have played tomorrow as heneeds to “fight for his place in theteam”.

Meanwhile, Engen Santos FC willtravel to Nelspruit to take on BidVestWits at the Mbombela Stadium tomor-row evening.

Boebie Solomons’ troops will also belooking to gain their first win of theseason, after they lost 3-1 to MorokaSwallows at Athlone Stadium on Fri-day evening.

After leading 1-0, a strong surge ofattack and two goals by midfielder Le-fa Tsutsulupa, and another by BennetChunene, shattered the hopes of San-tos.

Now Solomons’ chargers will belooking to get their title campaign go-ing with a win against Wits – who won3-1 the last time the two side’s met inFebruary.

•Tickets for the Ajax CT vs Maritz-burg United match are available fromComputicket, as well as any Shopriteand Checkers store.
