But a Gatesville man warns peo- ple to be wary of the bone-throwing, spirit-calling “doctors”, who he says “prey on the desperate”. After years of struggling with in- fertility, the man – who wants to be known only as Burhan – says he de- cided to turn to herbalists when there was little medical doctors and specialists could do for him. “I am a very religious man and I believe that faith is a powerful. I saw an advert in a newspaper and phoned the number, making an ap- pointment to see the woman at her Athlone office.” Burhan then borrowed R500 from a friend to pay for the consultation. “I was desperate but hopeful that this woman would be able to solve my problem with faith healing. When I got there, she asked me many questions about my life and my family. She then gave me a bit- ter herbal mixture to drink, as well as some to take home. “She told me that in order for her traditional solution to work, I had to drink the mixture that night, as well as the next morning before I re- turned. I also had to take a shower, whereafter I had to rinse myself in a bucket of the herbal water and catch enough to fill a one-litre bot- tle.” At their consultation the next day, she took the water and put it in a pot, bringing it to a boil. “We were sitting in a badly-lit room and she was watching the pot boil. She started calling to her an- cestors and out of nowhere this voice comes, telling me that he was her grandfather and that he was go- ing to help me with my problem. “The voice told me I was cursed and that someone had put a black magic spell on me. I believed every- thing this woman was saying – I was mesmerised.” But he started to smell a rat when the voice told him that he should go to relatives and people he knew to collect money for the herbalist. “I knew then that they were try- ing to con me. I left shortly thereaf- ter, because they were trying to ex- tort money from me, someone who was crying for help. How many peo- ple had actually given them the money out of sheer desperation?” Burhan says this is not the first time he has visited a herbalist. “On two other occasions, I went to see these traditional healers, and they too tried to get more money out of me to buy things like goats to slaughter. These people are con art- ists who are allowed to advertise their fraudulent activities to all and sundry.” But Dr Kizza, who says she has been operating in Athlone for over six years, says she never told Bur- han to bring her more money. “I told him to come back for more treatment, but he didn’t,” she says. The Ugandan herbalist says she has eight years’ experience and that she receives “many customers”. When asked why she charges R500 when other herbalists charge R100, she answered that she gives “proper treatment”. “They don’t get what they need with the other doctors, that’s why they come to me. I also have to im- port medicine from outside the country, and this costs money.” She further pointed out that she has been quite successful in the Athlone area, “which is why [she] has been [there] for six years”. “I provide good service. This man is telling lies. He is trying to spoil my name.” Warrant Officer Ian Bennett, the spokesperson for Athlone police, says he is aware of the incident. “However, legally, no crime was committed. The man willingly handed over the money for a serv- ice. People should be wary when it comes to these types of healers. Rather go to a qualified doctor for help and treatment.” He recalls an incident reported earlier this year where a woman, who had just retired, took her en- tire pension payout to a traditional healer “so that he could pray over it”. “He is still praying today. People shouldn’t be greedy and gullible. There is also a misconception that it’s only black people who visit these healers. However, many col- oureds also visit these ‘doctors’. There are so many of them because there is a market for it.” Phepsile Maseko, the national co- ordinator for the Traditional Heal- ers’ Organisation, says healing is based on the foundation of ubuntu and that “exorbitant fees” do not form part of the ethical code for tra- ditional healing. “A healer should not request a cli- ent to collect money on their behalf. In terms of our code, healers should advise on sustainable healing prac- tices, and give proper herbal treat- ment to customers. The behaviour described is in total contrast to what we stand for,” she says. Maseko explains that most heal- ers charge between R50 and R100 for a consultation, and if treatment is required, the herbs can cost up to R400. “A deposit can be requested, whereafter the remaining fees can be paid once the person has been treated fully. If anyone wants to check whether the healer they are considering is registered with us, they can phone the Cape Town coor- dinator, John Ngxowa, on 082 216 3408.” Marella O’Reilly, the acting CEO and registrar of the Health Profes- sions Council of South Africa, says that no traditional healers are reg- istered with the association. “It’s very important that patients make use of reputable practices, and if you are in doubt as to whether the person is legitimate, you can phone the HPCSA for confirmation,” she says. EXCLUDING MATTRESS

The theme of the Indaba is “Be ProudlySouth African - Buy Local to Create Jobs”which is the key message of Proudly South Af-rica’s marketing and communication cam-paign. The Expo will showcase Proudly SouthAfrican member companies’ service offeringsand manufactured products available from allsectors of business in South Africa, and aimsto create a network that can link all state or-gans and corporate business to local suppli-ers.

According to Dalene du Preez, executivemanager of marketing and communicationsat Proudly South African, for the consumer, attending the Indaba will make them awareof local brands that they can support in themarketplace and what opportunities “are outthere” for local entrepreneurs.

It’s also a great way for the youth and em-ployees to engage new company networks ina relaxed and non-pressurised environment.

The two-day Buy Local Indaba includespresentations and talks on local procurement, localmanufacturingand job creationopportu-nities, with a special focus on the priority sec-tors as identified by government.

These presentations will take place from09:00 to 16:00 and are open to corporates in aconference seating setting. Attendance at theBuy Local Indaba presentations is free, but

pre-registration is required. The centrepiece of the two-day event will be

the hosting of the prestigious Proudly SAHomegrown Awards, which are sponsored byPetroSA,SouthAfrica’s national oil company.

The awards will see Proudly SA membercompanies recognised and rewarded for theircommitment to job-creation, environmentalresponsibility, fair labour practices and theproduction of high-quality goods or services.

Kaizer Nyatsumba, PetroSA’s head of cor-porate affairs and communications, says thestate-owned firm’s sponsorship of the Homeg-rown Awards is necessitated by a need to de-velop local companies that can compete withthe best in the world.

“At PetroSA we view the development of lo-cal suppliers as critical to our own success. We often are compelled to utilise the servicesof foreign firms due to the non-availability ofsuitably-qualified South African companies.Supporting the Homegrown Awards ensureswe assist in developing and recognising localexpertise,” he says.

The Proudly SA Homegrown Awards willtake place on 29 September at the SandtonConvention Centre.

And for the first time the HomegrownAwards are going to be a public interactiveprocess.

Danger on Lansdowne pathwayTAMMY PETERSEN

A PATHWAY separating twoLansdowneschoolsandwhich isused

as a shortcut for pupils walking to Hano-ver Park has been labelled a danger areaafter a 15-year-old boy was almost at-tacked with a hammer on Wednesday.

The throughway acts as a direct link fromBarend Road to Jan SmutsDrive, which dividesLansdowne and Hanover Park.

Warrant Officer RobertLakey, the spokesperson forthe Lansdowne police, says theboy was walking home fromschool when he was ap-proached by two men at about15:05.

The men threatened himwith a hammer and asked himwhat valuables he was carry-ing, to which he respondedthat he had nothing.

“He tried to run away but hiscellphone fell. The two pickedit up and ran off towards Hano-ver Park,” he says.

Residents say that this is notthe first time that the pathwayhas been used for criminal ac-tivities.

“You always see slimy-looking people loi-tering in the gangetjie,” a resident, who askednot to be named, says.

“They lurk there waiting for pedestrians tocome past then they rob them. A few monthsago, my neighbour’s son was almost stabbedthere for his cellphone, in broad daylight. Atleast he is a good runner and he got away.”

She says the “tikkoppe from other areas”are wreaking havoc in the quiet streets.

“They are preying on our area. We are de-cent people who live here and these criminals

think they can just come here and do whatthey like. What utter nonsense!”

A woman who lives near the school saysshe has “barred” her two teenaged sons fromwalking near the path.

“That would just be looking for trouble. That little paadjie just brings trouble into thearea.

“The ruffians run through there after theycommit crime here in Groenvlei. Our streets

would be much quieter if theseskollies would just stay away.It would be good riddance tobad rubbish.”

School principal, WalterAdonis, says he was not awareof the incident.

“Every day I stand at thegate when the final bell ringsto make sure that the childrenarea safe. The police have alsobeen sterling in their patrols, which are regularly donearound the school.”

He admits that he is disap-pointed that he wasn’t in-formed of the incident, eitherby the police or by the parentsof the pupil.

“Besides that, we have agood relationship with the of-ficers. We know we can call on

them any time, like when people loiter out-side the school premises.”

Lakey says the police are planning to ap-proach the principal, as they hope to hold aninformation session for the pupils to promotesafety when walking to and from school.

“Students and the community have to beaware, alert and never walk alone, becausethat way criminals will take advantage.”

Anthea Green, the ward councillor forward 60, says she will be following up withvarious City officials on possible solutions tothe problem.

DON’T WALK THIS WAY: Residents say thiswalkway, which runs alongside Groenvlei High,is dangerous territory. The path connectsBarend Road to Jan Smuts Drive.

A FAMILY is devastated aftertheir Manenberg home was de-stroyed in a blaze on Thursday.

The family had been sleepingwhen they awoke at 03:00 to findtheir home was on fire.

Neighbours and the family ofthe Rhinoster Walk home tried todouse the flames, but it spread inminutes and there was no time tosave anything except the family’slives.

Now they are left to pick up thepieces and rebuild their lives.

“My son awoke to the fire, which was a few metres awayfrom him,” says Magda Appollis, the owner of the home.

“He screamed that the housewas on fire and I woke up. The en-tire house was burning. The onlything I thought about was gettingmy five children to safety.

“The neighbours came out andtried to put out the fire, but itspread too fast.”

Magdalene Constable, a neigh-bour, says she woke up and sawthe fire.

“We tried to help by putting outthe fire, but the fire was toostrong. However the fire brigadecame.”

Appollis says a police van thatwas patrolling came past and sawthe fire, and called for the fire bri-gade.

“They came and extinguishedthe fire, but it was too late; thehouse was destroyed,” says Appol-lis.

“I don’t know what to do now be-cause my home and all our belong-ings are destroyed. My husbanddied a year ago, and I was the onecaring for my five children, butnow we don’t even have a home. All their school clothes and booksare gone; our home that had somany memories has been wipedout.”

She says they have familywhere they can stay for the timebeing, but it’s too far for the chil-dren to travel to school.

“I don’t know where to begin torebuild our lives, but what I amthankful for is that none of mychildren were hurt during thefire. I put everything in God’shands and believe that there will

be a way out.”It has not yet been determined

what caused the fire, but the mat-ter is being investigated.

Anyone who will be able to as-sist the family with anything cancall their neighbour, Wafiq Ben-naill, on 079 2146 481.

Man shot in broad daylightREYANA STEYN

ONE man died and two people are recov-ering in hospital after they were brutallyshot in two separate incidents in Manen-berg.

On Monday 18 July, Luqmaan Pietersen(46), from Athlone, was shot in the facewhilehewas sitting inabak-kie with friends. “At 15:30,three men were sitting in abakkie parked in Manen-berg Avenue and RenosterRoad,” says Warrant OfficerLlewelyn Lakay, Manen-berg police spokesperson.“A man then walked by,took out a gun and fired asingle shot into the bakkie, hitting Pietersen in the face, and then ran off.”

The other two men thenrushed him to GF JoosteHospital, but he was de-clared dead on arrival.

Lakay says police werecontacted and the case wasinvestigated, leading to thearrest of a 20-year-old man.

“The suspect was arrestedand charged with murder.”

There have been reportsthat the shooting could have been gang-re-lated, and that Pietersen was allegedly af-filiated to the Yakkies gang.

However his family say he was previous-ly affiliated to the gang, but the affiliationhad ended years ago and he was “on thestraight and narrow path”.

His wife, Kauthar Pietersen (23), says hewas a good person and didn’t deserve to diethe way he did.

“With regards to the rumours about himbeing a gangster, he may have been affiliat-ed to the gang previously, but in the past

six years I have known him he changed. He still had friends who were gangsters, but he wasn’t involved.

“He settled down and was all about hisfamily, following his religion and helpingthe community. He loved helping olderpeople and giving out food to the under-privileged.” Avril Pietersen (45), Luq-maan’s sister, says he brought a lot of joyto their lives. “He was the caregiver in the

family. He even alwaysmade sure we were allokay. He was everything tous, a loving person and wewill miss him.”

Pietersen leaves behindhis wife Kauthar, and hischildren, Abduragheem, 22months, Azraa, one monthold, and Aimmah (18) froma previous relationship.

Anyone who has infor-mation about the murdercan contact Constable Jef-frey Witbooi, the investi-gating officer, on082 559 4713, 078 655 0450 or(021) 699-9400.

. The following morning,at 02:30, a couple was sit-ting in a maroon Mercedes-Benz parked in Peta Walk,when three men ap-proached them.

“They asked the man to open the doorand he refused, started up the car and wasabout to drive off when they fired severalshot at the car. The man managed to driveabout 50m, but then lost control andcrashed into a wendy house,” says Lakay.

“The man was shot in the stomach andchest and the woman was shot in the lowerback. The perpetrators took off on foot.”

Lakay says when the neighbours cameout to see what had happened, they rushedthe victims to the hospital. “Both victimsare still in hospital. No-one was injured

when the car crashed into the wendyhouse. No arrests have been made yet, butanyone with information is urged to comeforward.”

People’s Post tried to gain comment fromthe family, but was unable to do so by thetime of going to print.

Cleaning up ManenbergREYANA STEYN

IN a bid to keep Manenberg clean, the De-partment of Correctional Services em-barked on a cleaning project to help erad-icate the dirt in the local canal.

The project kicked off on Wednesday 13 Ju-ly and will serve as community service for20 parolees.

Theprojectwill be anon-goingproject, andwill take place every two weeks until thewhole canal from Duinefontein Road to Sur-rey Estate is cleaned.

“I was approached by Correctional Servic-es two weeks ago,” says Junade Hoosein, councillor for the area.

“They asked me if there was anything inthe community which the parolees would beable to do to complete their community serv-ice. I thought it was great that they asked andI told them that the local canal was dirty and

in need of cleaning and they agreed.”Hoosein organised black bags, gloves and

gumboots for the parolees, all aged between19 and 30. “They brought their own equip-ment such as rakes. These 20 men had suchgreat attitudes when they cleaned. Theywanted to take ownership of keeping the ca-nal clean.”

It was then agreed that the men wouldcome once every second week and maintainthe local canal. “We will have help from thecleansing and other departments who willsupply us with the equipment we require todo the task,” says Hoosein.

“It is also imperative that the surroundingresidents take charge of their area and re-port those who come to dump there.

“It doesnotmake sense thatwe clean todayand tomorrow there is dumping again. Com-munity members are complaining about therubbish being dumped around and in the ca-nal so they too should take ownership.”

Flamingo settlement:council respondsTHE City of Cape Town wishes to respond tothe accusations made by the Lansdowne Civ-ic Association (LCA) in the article “Probe in-to Flamingo demanded”, (People’s Post, 12 Ju-ly).

The first point of clarity is that the land inquestion comprises only Erf 61611, which isowned by the City – not privately owned asstated by the LCA.

Erf 61678 Cape Town, which the LCA alsoreferred to, is in fact a tarred parking areaon which there are no temporary residentialstructures at present.

Erf 61611, on which the Flamingo InformalSettlement is situated, is zoned as “publicplace” and was transferred to the City in 1956.

In the email referred to by the LCA inwhich the Displaced People’s Unit (DPU)identified the erf as privately owned, the DPUobtained the owner’s details off the GIS sys-tem, which is not always up to date.

It is in fact fairly common for public placesand roads that now belong to the City to stillbe registered in the name of the original de-veloper of the township. The City regrets theconfusion this error has created, there wasno mal fides or corrupt activities involved.

The informal settlement on Erf 61611 cameabout 18 years ago when night clubs openedon Flamingo Street and a group of homelesspeople started to make a living as unofficialparking marshals for patrons of the clubs. They soon settled in permanently to exercisefull-time control over what effectively be-came a parking area for the clubs.

In due course, the City began to provide ba-sic services to this group, as it is obliged todo in law. Although it was not the City’s in-tention, Erf 61611 effectively became an infor-mal settlement.

An inspection of the property in 1997 re-vealed 14 structures on the property. Officersdid not lie about the number of structures, asalleged by the LCA.

The reason that there appears to be onlythree structures and not 14 on the aerial pho-tograph the LCA referred to, is because thestructures were all up against the fence on ei-ther side of the plot under the trees, and couldtherefore not be picked up by the aerial cam-era.

In September 2005, certain councillors be-came concerned about the safety of the occu-pants of informal structures that had beenbuilt dangerously close to the M5 Freeway inthe vicinity of Lansdowne.

The City could not provide basic servicesto the occupants of these informal dwellingsbecause of the proximity of those structuresto the M5 or to other informal dwellings inthe area.

The then city manager, Dr Wallace Mgoqi, issued a written directive, dated 4 October2005, to the City’s Metro Police Chief at thetime and to other officials to immediately re-locate these vagrants and occupants of infor-mal structures to Erf 61611, as there was al-ready an informal settlement on this site thatcontained 14 structures that were there from1997 and basic services were already in-stalled.

At the end of the process, a comprehensivesurvey was done of all the occupants of thenow larger informal settlement. The surveyfound 186 persons residing on the property,in 69 structures.

The accusation that there is “virtually non-existent monitoring and control of the settle-ment” is not true. Prior to 2002, the site wasmanaged by the Metro Police Vagrancy Unit, whereafter the City’s Informal Housing Sec-tion took over the monitoring responsibili-ties.

As stated above, there were 69 structuresat the site in 2005 just after the relocationswere completed. Today, there are 75 shacksin the settlement. A few additional shackswere built as the initial size of the structures

could not accommodate the number of per-sons per structure.

The City’s Anti-Land Invasion Unit moni-tors the site at least once a week, but mostoften more than once a week, and demolishesall new, unauthorised structures on the prop-erty to prevent the settlement from expand-ing.

This settlement is still only a temporary so-lution until such time that the occupants canbe moved into formal housing.

There are currently 223 informal settle-ments in Cape Town, with 150 000 familiesregistered on the City’s database of informal

settlements. The City is currently driving a programme

to provide informal settlements with basicservices such as water, sanitation, accessroads and electricity where possible.

At the same time, the City is gradually up-grading informal settlements into formaltownships.

When this particular settlement will bemoved will depend on land availability inclose proximity and many other factors.ERNEST SONNENBERG, MAYORALCOMMITTEE MEMBER FOR HUMANSETTLEMENTS
