No way, man. We are mostly devout Muslim and Chris- tian residents who live here and something like this is haraam. It is a sin to stand by and allow people to destroy themselves and families like this.” He says that on the “odd occa- sion” he sees the Chinese woman outside the house and always tells her to “stop her nonsense”. “She either ignores me or screams at me in a foreign lan- guage. Everyone here knows what they are doing. It’s disgusting.” Another neighbour claims that a “fishy smell” is constantly in the air around the house and that residents are convinced that the house is also being used to store illegal perlem- oen. “The stench is unbearable,” the woman says. “It’s so strong it makes you sick to your stomach. Cars sometimes pull up and deliver packages and we even find broken foam boxes, usually used to keep ab- alone cool, blowing around the street.” When People’s Post visited the house with the police on Thursday, a Chinese woman claiming to be the main tenant in the house vehement- ly denied being involved in crime. “I am not bad. I have papers,” she said repeatedly. The woman was initially reluc- tant to let the officers in but after a few minutes opened the door. The house was in virtual dark- ness and the woman claimed she was home alone. When the officers asked her to turn on the lights, a man was found in the front bedroom, sitting on a chair. A massage table was set up next to an unmade bed and when she was asked if she ran a massage parlour, she replied that it’s to fix her “sore” back. When the officers moved to the second bedroom it was locked and the woman replied that the person living in the room was not home. However, after the officers knocked at the door, a second Chi- nese woman came out of the room. She could not speak English, the first woman explained. After the officers asked her why she had lied and said there was no- one else in the house, the woman claimed that she had not under- stood the question. The trio was warned by the offic- ers that police would be monitoring the house and that if they were in- volved in illegal activities they would be arrested. The woman, who says she has been living in the area for two months, replied that she was not do- ing anything wrong and was regu- larly harassed by neighbours ac- cusing her of illegal activity. “They make ‘bang bang’ on my gate. But I do nothing. They don’t leave me alone. I like to stay in the house and watch TV,” she insisted to the officers. Hanif Loonat, the chairperson for the Nyanga Cluster Community Po- lice Forum, says it has become the norm to rent houses in affluent are- as for illegal activities. “Criminals reckon that they won’t be noticed if they live in a nice house in a nice suburb. AFTER a heated argumentwith her drug-addicted son,

a mother took a walk to clear herhead and think of ways to helphim turn his life around.

She did not realise it would be thelast time she would close the 12-year-old door to her modest Manen-berg home.

Stephanie Jehoma (51) says sheand her children were left homelessafter her 27-year-old son allegedlydoused her bedroom with petroland set fire to the home she waited18 years to have – because of an ar-gument over takkies.

The mother-of-four says her or-deal started in the early hours ofSaturday morning when she re-turned from a nearby fundraisingevent.

“He knew I had my son and boy-friend’s wages and my mother’spension in my bra. He grabbed meand told me to give him the moneybut I refused. I explained that that’sour money to get us through themonth, but he didn’t want to under-stand that. He would not let go andeventually got his hands on thecash and disappeared,” the dis-traught woman says.

The next day, the young man re-turned with brand new takkies anda cellphone. “I was so angry I couldbarely speak. I didn’t know what tosay to him because he is so aggres-sive, but I knew I had to provide formy family and needed to get hold ofwhat he bought and try to resell it.

“On Sunday, I took the shoeswhile he was sleeping and gave it toa neighbour to keep until I could

find a buyer.”Upon discover-

ing the next daythat the new tak-kies had disap-peared, he ap-proached hismother and de-manded that shereturn them.

“I told him Ididn’t have themand that he hadhad no right to robhis own mother. We had a massiveargument about it.“I needed to thinkabout what Iwould do next be-cause I realised Icouldn’t keep living like this. As Iwalked away, my daughter ran outof the house and said he had threat-ened to burn down our flat. I didn’ttake him seriously,” she says, light-ing a cigarette.

When she returned about an hourlater, she saw neighbours and firefighters standing outside herThames Walk house. “Everyonestarted screaming that he had setfire to the house, but when I gotthere, it was all over. My room wasdestroyed and the kitchen, frontroom, bathroom and lounge wereseriously damaged. Everything Ihad worked for was damaged be-yond repair. I couldn’t even cry – Ijust felt empty inside.”

Neighbours and local organisa-tions have all supported her by giv-ing her and her family food andclothes, and she is currently livingin a wendy house in ProudlyManenberg’s peace garden in

Manenberg Avenue while her homeis restored.

A charge of arson was laid at thelocal police station but her son hasnot been arrested as he ran awaywhen the inferno started.

“I can’t believe that he could dothis to our family. He was 15 whenwe moved into this house and heknewhowwestruggledwhile livingin people’s back yards. I raised himto be a decent person, not what heis now. Waar het ek verkeerd ge-gaan?”

Jehoma adds that she is gratefulto locals who brought their bucketsand hosepipes to try to save herhome. “Every little drop is appreci-ated. I know we will survive. I’mjust happy that no one was home atthe time and nobody got hurt.”

. Anyone able to donate furni-ture, food or clothing to the Jehomafamily can phone Stephanie on072 319 2901.

A VACANT council house Crawfordresidents consider an eyesore will be

demolished once a public participationprocess has been completed.

Situated at 143 Kromboom Road, the housestands out like a sore thumb in comparisonto the neat surrounding properties in the rel-atively well-off area.

Residents, who call the house “WelcomeHome” as it is the first house seen at thesouthern entrance of the suburb, say thesooner the property is cleared, the better.

“I will send the council a ‘thank you’ notewhen I see the house reduced to rubble,” saysMohammed Jaynoedien, who has lived inCrawford for the past 18 years.

“A derelict property like that always at-tracts unwanted elements, who have beenspotted lurking on the wire-fenced groundson numerous occasions.

“It is a bad reflection on those of us whoinvest thousands of rands into maintaining

the good standards of property in this vicini-ty.”

Joseph du Preez claims the house was pre-viously used for drug peddling, and says hewould “much rather have them back thanhave it standing empty”.

“The house at least looked half-decentwhile there were tenants living there. Thisis council property and it took them a verylong time to sort out their business. Not oneresident here is impressed with their retard-ed approach to resolving this. It’s laughable.”

He says a security guard would “sporadi-cally” visit the property to check for illegalinhabitants.

“The biggest joke is that my rates went to-wards paying the fool, who would just walkaround theproperty anddisappear a fewmin-utes later. They wasted money by employinga guard who didn’t even do his job properly.”

Various people have approached the coun-cil about possibly renting the prime propertyfrom the City, explains proportional repre-sentative councillor Magadien Davids, whohas been in regular contact with the propertymanagement department about the house.

“I also thought that the best solutionwould have been to find a tenant, especiallysince there is such a great demand for hous-ing in the greater Athlone area,” he says.“However, I was informed by the relevant of-ficials that the house was not habitable.”

Ruby Gelderbloem, the City’s director ofproperty management, says the house hasbeen vacant since March last year, after thetenant diedand the familywasunable to con-tinue with the lease.

“Investigations into whether the propertywas suitable for being rented were carriedout and the comments received were that thebuilding was unfit for occupation due to thestructural cracks right down to the founda-tions.”

The security guard had been employed toprotect the City’s assets from vandalism ortheft while investigations into the future ofthe house were undertaken, she says.

Gelderbloem says the final decision to de-molish rests with council, but adds that theproposal to “dispose of the asset by meansof demolition” must still be advertised in thelocal press for comment or objections.

It has not yet been decided what the vacanterf will be used for once the house has beenrazed.

Soccer eveningends in terrorTAMMY PETERSEN

WHAT started out as a group of friends stay-ing in to watch a soccer game ended in terrorwhen five men stormed into a Kenwyn houseand robbed them at knife-point.

Two men were treated for stab wounds af-ter the gang attacked them in the Range Roadhouse on Tuesday at 21:30.

Warrant Officer Robert Lakey, spokesper-son for Lansdowne police, says a man wear-ing a police reflector jacket knocked at thefront door of the house and “asked to speakto Patrick”. “When the home owner tried toexplain that there was no-one with that nameliving there, four men forced their way intothe house and one pointed a gun at the threefriends while another held a knife,” he ex-plains.

The robbers then tied the men’s handswith cables and told them they were underarrest.

“The friends protested and made a scenebecause they did not believe the suspects. One of the men then stabbed the victim whowas making the most noise in the hand, back, thigh and arm. They then threatened to hurtthe others if they did not cooperate.”

The robbers unplugged the plasma TV andtook cash and cellphones before carryingtheir loot to a car parked in the road, Lakeycontinues.

One of the friends, however, managed tountie himself and followed the men, whowere still on the property.

“When he caught one of the robbers, a tus-sle ensued and he was stabbed in the arm.Their assailants then fled to the silver OpelAstra and fled the scene.”

Jobs availableduring electionsMELISSA LE ROUX

WITH the municipal elec-tions around the corner,

the Independent Electoral Com-mission (IEC) has created 15 630temporary voluntary employ-ment opportunities for commu-nity members.

This is in addition to other IECpositions, such as assistant projectcoordinators and area managers.

The 15 630 temporary staff willman voting stations.

The IEC is a publicly-funded, per-manent body that was establishedin terms of the Electoral Commis-sion Act of 1996.

Its purpose is to promote and safe-guard democracy in South Africa.

Provincial Electoral Officer, Rev-erend Courtney Sampson, says theIEC’s task is to put all structuresand systems in place for a “free andfair election without showing prej-

udice or favour to any of the partici-pating political parties”.

The IEC’s job structure consistsof permanent jobs aswell as “expan-sion job structures” – temporaryemployment for people in the com-munity during the election period.

As each electoral project coordi-nator has an assistant, there are 40posts for the assistant project coor-dinator position. There are also 387posts for the area manager position. These positions are advertised invarious publications as applicantswould need to have a tertiary quali-fication.

The posts are terminated onemonth after the election is over.

Sampson said: “There are 1 570voting stations, and during the reg-istration process, three staff mem-bers are at each voting station and10 are present on election day.”

However, there are currently nomore positions available at the IEC,as they have all been filled.

According to Sampson, the IECdoes not offer jobs.

“The 15 630 positions that areavailable at the time of elections arevoluntary positions, and they getcompensated for the time spentworking in aid of the elections,” hesaid.

The IEC advertised the availablepositions and anyone interestedcould apply at the local offices inAthlone, Mitchell’s Plain, Strand,Constantia and Bellville.

Training is provided by the IECand began on Friday 1 April. It cov-ered the operations involved dur-

ing elections.Staff are taught to handle difficult

situations, what their duties areand the legal aspects of the legisla-tion.

According to Sampson, politicalparty officials or campaigners maynot apply for a job at the IEC during

election time.“Having someone who cam-

paigns for a particular political par-ty volunteering at a voting stationon election day will put the IEC ina bad light, as they could try to per-suade people to vote for that party.

“There is a declaration that the

volunteers at the voting stationhave to sign, saying that they arebeing truthful,” he says.

Any of the volunteers foundguilty of campaigning for a politicalparty at any time during the elec-tion periodwill be removed fromtheir post.

‘Massive’ arrearsprotest action plannedTAMMY PETERSEN

THOUSANDS of people are expected totake part in a massive protest which

will see residents from 12 suburbs marchto the Cape Town Civic Centre under onebanner on Tuesday 26 April to demandthe scrapping of all municipal arrears forpeople living in the city’s im-poverished areas.

The decision to protest wasmade by Communities for So-cial Change (CSC), a coordinat-ing structure of civic organisa-tions representing HanoverPark, Athlone, Manenberg,Mitchell’s Plain, Hout Bay, Hei-develd, Lavender Hill, LotusRiver, Ottery, Grassy Park, El-sies River and Leonsdale.

The decision comes aftermeetings held with City of CapeTown officials failed to resolveissues concerning the poor, says Mario Wanza, the organis-er of the CSC.

Representatives from theCSC met Mayor Dan Plato andCity officials yesterday to dis-cuss their demands.

These include the halting of evictions dueto illegal occupations, debt and anti-socialbehaviour, a call for the scrapping of munici-pal arrears and the handing over of council-owned units to people who have been payingrent for years.

“Whatupsetus is that therewasno investi-gation into the validity of our requests andno committee set up to review our demands.

“The City just flat-out refused what we

were asking for, and we will respond by do-ing what’s best for the people and protesting.Ons gaan Kaap toe.”

The action comes two months after 3 000residents from Manenberg took to the streetsarmed with posters asking the City to lowertheir rent and write off their rental backlog.

Wanza says people have been paying rentfor over 30 years and theyshould be given ownership ofthe council properties.

Also under the banner ofthe CSC, more than 500 Hano-ver Park residents took to thestreets last month and deliv-ered a memorandum to the lo-cal rent office demanding thattheir arrears be scrapped.

One of the area coordina-tors for CSC, Errol Davids, says people are becoming in-volved in the “movement” be-cause they are desperate and“over their heads in debt”.

Davids, who is the deputychairperson of the HanoverPark Civic Association, saysthe organisation is in “totalsupport” of the planned pro-test, adding that they will

start distributing pamphlets within theweek.

Two weeks ago, Mitchell’s Plain residentsexpressed their concerns about the scrap-ping of water arrears when they burnt acardboard coffin containing hundreds ofwarning letters issued by the City.

The coffin was loaded onto a hearse andtaken from Mitchell’s Plain Town Centre tothe Beacon Valley Rent Office where it wasburnt in front of cheering protestors.

The CSC’s Mitchell’s Plain coordinator,Sulyman Stellenboom, says another marchwill take place in Mitchell’s Plain on 21 Aprilwhen they will return to the subcouncil of-fice and request feedback on their demandfor the removal of water management devic-es behind the incorrect readings being takenfrom water meters, leading to high bills.

“This City has no respect for the poor andis not taking this matter seriously. We arerepresenting the people and although we tryto engage with the officials towards findinga solution, they are not coming to the party.”

Plato, who was handed a copy of the pam-phlet which the CSC has been distributingto invite people to take part, declined to com-ment on theplannedprotest, sayingonly that“it’s their right to march”.

However, he says the action seems to be“politically motivated” and that the CSC ismaking “one demand after the other”.

“They are making accusations and allega-tions without listening to our explanations. They claim there is a lack of service deliveryto the poor, but they cannot give us the proofto back this claim. They need to be more or-ganised and give me a list of complaints sothat I can follow up on it.”

He adds that a follow-up meeting is beingplanned, although a date is yet to be set.

Things can be much worseTONY ROBINSON

MOST of the people who are ragingagainst the idea of exploring for shalegas in the Karoo know very littleabout the technology and what Sasolhas called its “game changing” poten-tial.

In fact, most of the knowledge in cir-culationhas come fromthose stronglyopposed to “fracking”. Public rela-tions companies have even been re-tained to blacken the picture andwhip up emotions to a point approach-ing hysteria.

They have plenty of material towork with. In the early days of frack-ing there were disasters, most of themthe result of wild cat operations. Butthe technology has improved and inresponsible hands it might even be ac-ceptable in some circumstances. So itis easy to understand the fears in cir-culation.

I grew up in the Karoo and I knowthat water gives land its value. Takeaway the water or contaminate it andone is left with worthless desert. In adrought, a good borehole is the onlything that stands between a farmerand financial ruin. It is an emotional

relationship. You canmess with his wife butdon’t touch his borehole. The water of agriculturalimportance lies at depthsof no more than a fewhundred metres. Frack-ing, however, takes placesomething like 10 kilome-tres below the surface! That is five time deeperthan our deepest goldmine. The temperaturedown there will be about300°C and any water would become in-stant steam. If the hole is lined withsteel there should be no contamina-tionof agriculturalwater. But one canunderstand the fear. The biggest prob-lems will be logistical ones. Theequipment is massive and new roadswill be required. What does one dowith 10 kilometres of earth from bore-hole cores? The impact on the Karoowill be considerable. And where willthe water needed for fracking comefrom? On the other hand, holes 10 kilo-metres deep will give us access to aninexhaustible supply of geothermalheat. And that can be turned into elec-tricity. The US Department of Energy

says geothermal elec-tricity is cheaper thancoal or nuclear powerand the price does notgo up every year alongwith the cost of fuel andlabour. Even if there isno gas we could win. Sohere’s the question:would you rather haveShell fracking in the Ka-roo or Eskom trying torun half a dozen atomicpower stations? Nucle-

ar power requires consistent goodmanagement for at least 50 years. There is no place for CEOs who trimthe maintenance budgets to improvethe bottom line and their bonuses. And there is no place for cadre deploy-ment.

Imagine a future Minister of Miner-als, Energy and Nationalisation –someone like Julius Malema – havinga hand in the appointment of nuclearmangers. His matric woodwork stud-ies would be of little help. We may beable to survive an implosion in theLand Bank or a foul-up in the Karoo, but mismanagement of a Koebergcould be goodbye Cape Town.

Look at Rehoboth’s boardWITH regards to your arti-cle (“Staff unite in pro-test”, People’s Post, 5April) I wish to share mytwo cents worth.

I served on an old agedhome’s board a few yearsago and I’m not sure if Re-hoboth Age Exchange Cen-tre in Hanover Park is runthe same way, but theboard comprised mostly ofvolunteers from the com-munity.

The state subsidised thehome for each residentand the resident also con-tributed towards his/herupkeep.

When I joined the board, money was a major prob-lem, with a bank balanceedging all the while closerto nil. The monetary prob-lem was inherited fromthe previous board.

The same complaints of

no increases for over-worked staff were preva-lent.

After doing some sums,I couldn’t understand howthe board could not sur-vive on the allowancesfrom the state and the resi-dents.

The problem was actual-ly the board. Becausemembers were volunteersfrom the community, theskills required to actuallymanage the facility did notexist within the board.

Members are usuallyjust good-hearted peoplefrom the community whowant to do something forthe aged. While there isnothing wrong with that, the skills for financialmanagement is best left topeople with business acu-men.

Mismanagement of

funds does not mean thatsomeone is stealing fromthe kitty.

It could simply be thatthe members of the boarddo not have the skills tomanage the funds.

I must stress, however, that I donotknowtheman-agement set-up of Re-hoboth so I’m not sure whothe board is and whatskills they have.

I just thought that itmight be worth it for theboard to look into the ap-pointment of a volunteeraccountant, if they do nothave one on board as yet.ROEKEYA BARDIENRondebosch East. Do your bit to combat unemploymentDEPUTY Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nenesaid that joblessness is the single biggest chal-lenge for South Africa and despite the econo-my having recovered from the recession, em-ployment is still below pre-crisis levels.

Sometimes, in the midst of such massivechallenges, we ordinary South Africans feelpowerless. We hope that government and in-dustry will sort it out. After all, I don’t ownmy own company or have millions at my dis-posal, so what can I possibly do to make a dif-ference?

In fact there is plenty that I can do and re-cently I had the opportunity to be a part of thesolution. I have long needed paint work doneon my home and a friend recommended I useMen on the Side of the Road (MSR). MSR isan employment project which screens skilledlabourers and facilitates the placement ofthose who have proven to be competent andtrustworthy over a period of time.

The guys were great! The job was well done, they were neat and efficient and it cost me afraction of what a contractor would havecharged me.

There are many examples like this. We allthink recycling is a good idea, but how manyof us actually do it? We all lament our coun-try’s dire unemployment figures, but whatare any of us doing about it?

For my part I have provided employmentfor seven men for several days. I have helpedseven families who really need it.

South Africans have always been solutions-oriented people. Let’s not wait for govern-ment and industry to sort out unemployment,by supporting projects like MSR, each one ofus can be part of the solution to unemploy-ment. Visit www.MSR.org.za for more infor-mation.ANNETTE DAVISRondebosch

MINISTER of Cooperative Governanceand Traditional Affairs Sicelo Shicekahas come under fire for leading a lavishlifestyle at taxpayers’ expense, following

a Sunday Times report into the R2,5 mil-lion in state money he has allegedly spenton luxury hotels, limousines and over-seas trips since 2008. In a country whose

public representatives are often caughtout enjoying too much of the good life, hisparticular blend of lavishness has a bitof a Hollywood ring to it.

Cry, beloved countryWHILE most South Africans live in abject po-verty, public officials such as Minister of Co-operative Governance and Traditional AffairsSicelo Shiceka seem to have been living likea millionaire – if the findings of a SundayTimes report are true.

No expense was allegedly spared by Shicekawho – according to documents in the newspa-per’s possession – has spent more than R2.5million on first-class flights and accommoda-tion since 2008. The article states that Shicekaspent R640 000 in one year for him and staff tostay at the One & Only, of which R280 000 wasspent on Shiceka alone – by his own admission.

Furthermore, it is reported that Shiceka em-barked on a first-class flight for him and hispersonal assistant, rounded off with a stay ina five-star hotel to visit his girlfriend in prisonin Switzerland, at a cost of R335 000. The visitto the prison, in a chauffeur-driven limo, costR32 000.

If true, Shiceka’s lifestyle smacks of “blatantabuse of taxpayers’ money”. His alleged waste-ful expenditure has attracted widespread con-demnation.

Shiceka is not the only South African publicofficial whose lavish lifestyle is under scruti-ny.

In a country that can ill afford to blow mil-lions of rands, ANC youth league leader JuliusMalema cost taxpayers more than R886 000 forpolice bodyguards from October 2009 to Octo-ber 2010. Malema did not hold any public officeto justify having two bodyguards. He was justan ordinary citizen, like the millions of otherordinary South Africans who fork out millionsto keep themselves safe.

But the buck doesn’t stop there. Flying in theface of a country lacking housing, health andbasic services, is Defence Minister Lindiwe Si-sulu’s decision to lease two new aircraft fortransporting VIPs, at a staggering R800 mil-lion.

When South Africans voted a democraticgovernment into power 17 years ago, they vo-ted for democracy, and a better life for all. Abetter life is being had, but only by a privilegedminority.

Be wary of wounded LionsTASMIN CUPIDO

THE reaction of the DHL Storm-ers team, who suffered their firstdefeat of the season at the week-end, will dictate the team’s runfor the rest of the Super Rugbycompetition.

And head coach Allister Coetzeehopes his troops will take the lossin their stride, get up and learnfrom the mistakes made against theAustralian outfit at Newlands onSaturday. “This is a long and toughcompetition, and it is crucial thatthe guys pitch with their A-game ateach match,” Coetzee said.

“We need to take this loss on thechin and stand up to produce betterperformances.”

Unforced errors and ill-disciplinemarred the Stormers’ game plan inthe 19-6 defeat to the men from Bris-bane saw.

The Reds, who dominated thelacklustre Cape side in all aspectsof the game, were simply the betterside on the day – Coetzee is the firstto admit this. “We were not at ourbest; tactically the Reds were muchbetter and their physical intensitywas much higher – all credit to theReds,” he said.

A territorial game, keeping theStormers in their own half for mostof the match, saw the likes of QuadeCooper and Will Genia using tacti-

cal kicks to put pressure on the menin navy blue. Stints in the sin binfor Stormers eighthman, Duane

Vermeulen, and hooker, Tiaan Lie-benberg, also did not help them.

“We couldn’t gain or keep any

momentum and playing with 14men for 20 minutes of the match didnot aid us, either,” Coetzee says.

Despite the loss, they remain inthe top position on the South Afri-can conference log and third on thecombined log.

Now the Stormers will diverttheir attention to the MTN Lions, who they take on at Coca-Cola Parkin Johannesburg on Saturday after-noon. The last time the two sidesmet the Stormers came out 19-16victors in their first match of thecompetition.

John Mitchell’s side has had aspate of unfortunate, tightly-con-tested losses throughout the compe-tition and will be looking to raisethemselves from the bottom of thecombined log.

With nothing to lose, playing forpride in front of their home crowd, the men in red will put up a bravefight in the hope of turning the ta-bles on the high-flying Stormers.

Never afraid to run a risk, themen from Egoli will test the ever on-song Stormers defence, while a bat-tle in the engine room can also beexpected.

Coetzee expects inside centreJean de Villiers, who was a last-minute withdrawal from the Reds’clash, to make his return againstthe Lions this Saturday.

City to hostglobal festBRIAN GAFFNEY

THE Safa Cape Town is forging ahead withplans to stage an eight-nation internation-al showpiece for under-20s – believing itwill generate a huge financial spin-off foramateur soccer in 2012.

So much so that the Safa CT applicationto run the event – in partnership with theCity of Cape Town – has already been ap-proved by the SA Football Association. Sa-fa CT president, Norman Arendse, dis-closed that the eight-nation championshipwill comprise the respective winners of thesix Fifa Confederations Cup champion-ships, the SA under-20s and an additionalAfrican team.

“It is vital that we recognise under-20soccer as a milestone for the developmentof our players. It is our responsibility as anamateur association to showcase this tal-ent,” said Arendse.

The blueprint for the 2012 championshipcomes on the back of the successful inaugu-ral Cape Town International Challenge forunder-20s that was hosted by the Safa CTand the city in 2010.

Ghana, Brazil, South Africa and Nigeriavied for honours on the eve of the 2010WorldCup inSouthAfrica.GhanadefeatedBrazil 3-2 in the challenge final, watchedby a 50 000-strong crowd at Cape Town Sta-dium – with the overall gate-takings fromall matches allowing the city to contributeR600 000 to the coffers of the Safa CT.

Arendse also disclosed that the Safa CThas secured increased financial supportfrom other stakeholders to stage its seniorand junior competitions this year.

. Coca-Cola has agreed to increase itssponsorship for the Coke knockout Cupchampionships from R500 000 to R600 000.

. Freeworld Coatings has upped itssponsorship for the club championshipsfor under-11s and under-13s from R50 000 toR75 000.

. Peace activist Mary Burton will pa-tron the new Unity Cup for under-16 highschool teams from various communities tothe tune of R150 000 this year; and

AT age 30, Brent Carelse re-sists thoughts about hang-

ing up his boots in the forseeablefuture – but rather focuses onwhat more he can aspire toachieve with Ajax Cape Town FCon the road ahead.

What is uppermost in Carelse’smind of course at the moment, is tohelp Ajax win the Premier SoccerLeague (PSL) champions title forthe first time in its 11-year history.

“I believe we can finish top if westay focused and avoid complacen-cy,” says Carelse, who has becomeno stranger on the champions’ ros-trum.

Carelse – eyeing a fourth win-ners’ medal – represented champi-ons Mamelodi Sundowns(2006/2007), whereafter he sharedin two of SuperSport United’s threeconsecutive league triumphs(2008/2009 and 2009/2010). NowAjax could enhance their champi-onship chances if they notch fullpoints against Golden Arrows atNewlands Stadium on Friday (start20:00).

Carelse, buoyed by Ajax CEOGeorge Comitis’ disclosure that hewill sign the midfield maestro nextseason – after he came on loan fromSuperSport in January – is expect-ed to continue his rich vein of formfor the Urban Warriors.

“I was not only looking for a newchallenge when I returned to Ajaxfrom SuperSport, where I felt mygame was stagnating because of myirregular appearances in matches.I also felt a need to settle in CapeTown with my family,” saidCarelse.

The presence of a versatile left-sided midfielder – who has thus farnetted four goals for Ajax – has alsobrought out the best in the free-scoring Thulani Serero and KhamaBilliat.

So often Carelse’s penchant for

engaging his pacey fellow playersin quick one-two plays has allowedAjax to prosper during their recentrun of successes.

The other motivation for Carelseis to be mentored by Dutch coachFoppe de Haan. “He is professionalin his approach and a very honestcoach. He constantly tells us thatwe are better players than what wethink we are.”

“DeHaan’s one-on-one chatswitheach player really makes us believein our abilities,” enthused Carelse.

The Johannesburg-born Carelseis also thankful to his father DougieCarelse – a former pro with CapeTown Spurs and Vereeniging OldBoys in the old Federation Profes-sional League – for inspiring himto pursue a soccer career.

“My dad insisted that I enrol atthe School of Excellence in Johan-nesburg during my teens.

“It was a tough experience but heencouraged me to persevere to en-sure my future in the game.

“He has always allowed me thefreedom to do things my way on thefield. But he will occasionally tellme what aspect of my game I needto improve on,” said Carelse junior, who first turned professional withHellenicFC (thencoachedbyGavinHunt) at age 17.

But back to the showdown withGolden Arrows. Remember that itwas Arrows that drew 2-2 with Ajaxin 2007/2008 to deny Ajax the titleon goal difference when the clubstied on points.

First choice custodian, HansVonk, is also ruled out by suspen-sion and will be replaced by AndrePetim on Friday night.

Good news for Ajax though, isthat Clayton Daniels returns fromsuspension and that SaamehgDoutie is fit to play.
