The upgrade consists of converting two lanes into four to help relieve the congestion experienced by road users during peak hour. Along the entire 5km stretch of road, there is not a single pedestrian crossing. This is dangerous for residents from Pelican Park, Eagle Park and Phumlani Village, who use public transport to reach work, school and other destinations and have to cross the busy road. The chairperson of the Pelican Park/Eagle Park Residents’ Association, Yaseen Meyer, says residents have continuously com- plained about the lack of safety measures for pedestrians – such as a set of traffic lights or pedestrian crossings – on the road that is cur- rently being upgraded. “The road is very dangerous for pedestri- ans. There is a robot at the corner of Fifth Av- enue in Grassy Park and at the corner of Spine and Strandfontein roads. The long stretch of road in-between has no pedestrian crossings,” said Meyer. He adds that the upgrade began almost two years ago and that there were no pedestrian- friendly measures then. “Because it was only two lanes it wasn’t as bad as it will be now.” Cars come speeding down the road day and night, he says. “The new road will just be- come more convenient for speedsters.” A resident of Pelican Park, Zain Human, says there have been many accidents on the road. “There is no street control; no stop streets, robots, pedestrian crossings or speed entrapment.” He said that residents who use public trans- port, risk their lives when crossing the road. “When people get off a bus or taxi, they must wait long for a safe enough time to cross the road. What must they do when it rains? It’s a safety hazard for them as there are now four lanes to cross.” From September last year to last week, a total of six fatalities occurred on the road, including a recent accident on Tuesday 19 April, involving a 16-year-old boy who was knocked over and died before police arrived on the scene, says spokesperson for Grassy Park Police Station, Warrant Officer Wynita Kleinsmith. People’s Post did not report on the accident, as the family of the victim did not give permission to do so. In Pelican Park, there are about 450 house- holds, with approximately 500 vehicles us- ing the only two exits into Strandfontein Road, to get to any destination. Residents of Pelican Park and surrounds have been complaining for years about hav- ing to wait a long time, especially during peak hour, to enter Strandfontein Road from intersecting roads on the side. “Motorists who need to gain access onto Strandfontein Road can only enter the road as a privilege and not as road users. Those on the straight road won’t slow down to ac- commodate cars that are coming out,” says Meyer. Mymoena Valley, a resident of Pelican Park and member of the ratepayers’ associa- tion for over 20 years, says they have been asking the City to install traffic lights at the intersection of Strandfontein Road and 11th Avenue, for more than 20 years. “We got nothing. This road upgrading has been in the pipeline for 15 years now. And yes, it will help with traffic flow, but what about us who sit at the intersection for more than 30 minutes trying to get into Strandfon- tein Road?” she asked. Charles Cooper, media officer for the City of Cape Town, says: “The local community has requested that traffic signals be imple- mented at the intersection of Strandfontein and 11th Avenue. A decision was taken to wait until the present construction phase has been completed, and then conduct a new sur- vey to determine if a traffic signal is warrant- ed. “The original survey information did not support the installation of a traffic signal. Should a traffic signal be warranted, pedes- trian crossings will be incorporated into the traffic signal timing,” he said. The upgrading of Strandfontein Road com- prises of two phases. Phase One is due to be completed in mid-May. Cooper says that installing traffic signals on 15th and 18th avenues was initially includ- ed in the scope of Phase One, but due to budg- etary constraints it will now be included as part of the scope of Phase Two. Amaan Sharfoobien has been living in Peli- can Park for more than 22 years. He says the upgrade is both a blessing and a curse. “Traf- fic will be a lot smoother, with four lanes. However, there being no pedestrian cross- ings, makes it a nightmare for people who use public transport. “Elderly people and high school children use buses and taxis which do not drive into the areas, so they get dropped off on the side of the road, where they have to dodge traffic,” he says. Cooper says the upgrading of the road is Phase One of the overall phased approach of the upgrading of Strandfontein Road, from Baden Powell Drive to Lansdowne Road. “The carriageway, currently under con- struction, is designed for its future use as a North-bound carriageway, even though it will be temporarily used as a South-bound carriageway. “The existing Strandfontein Road will be used as a service road, on completion of the two carriageways. “The full benefit of this project will only be realised once the two carriageways become operational,” he says. DID YOU KNOW that, for the 2011local government elections, pollswill take place in 278 municipali-ties nationwide? This is downfrom 283 in 2006. There are now

eight metropolitan councils, 226 local coun-cils and 44 district councils. – (www.sabcnews.co.za)

Abalone worthR600 000 seizedMEMBERS of the Western Cape Hawks’Commercial Crimes Unit in Bellville, togeth-er with Marine Coastal Management (MCM)confiscated 4 996 pieces of shucked abalone, with an estimated value of R600 000, lastTuesday in Elim Street, Grassy Park at 06:30.

The squad received a tip-off about a housethat was allegedly used to store abalone, gota warrant and went to the scene.

When the Hawks arrived on the scene, no-one was there, but they confiscated sevenbox freezers that the abalone was stashed in– with an estimated value of R7 500 – one bigand three small scales, as well as other equip-ment used to process the abalone.

Spokesperson for Grassy Park Police Sta-tion, Warrant Officer Wynita Kleinsmith, says that – based on information given to thesquad by the informant – it is alleged thatthere are three men who clean and distributethe abalone, and another man who is the“brains” behind the entire operation.

No arrests have been made; however, theinvestigation is ongoing. The spokespersonfor SAPS Western Cape Media Centre, War-rant Officer November Filander, told Peo-ple’sPost thathe isunable todisclose any fur-ther information, as it will affect the investi-gation.

. A 30-year-old man from Eagle Park wasarrested last Tuesday for perjury.

On Saturday 16 April, the suspect came in-to Grassy Park Police Station to report thathis car stolen. According to Kleinsmith, thesuspect said his vehicle had been stolen infront of the mosque in Fifth Avenue, LotusRiver.

After investigation by the officers at thepolice station, a car fitting the descriptiongiven by the suspect was found at a mechanicin Mitchell’s Plain.

“The mechanic told us that the car hadbeen standing there for a week already andthat iswhenwesuspected somethingwasnotright.

“As it turned out, the vehicle that was ‘sto-len’ was bought from the suspect, by a manwho lives in Mandalay, a year ago,” saysKleinsmith.

The suspect appeared in theWynbergMag-istrate’s Court on Wednesday on a charge ofperjury.

Station commander, Colonel Leroy Nolan, warns that anyone who makes a false state-ment to the police will face charges of perju-ry.

Pupils unite to stop hungerMELISSA LE ROUX

SIX southern suburbs highschools will be taking part inthe “Stop Hunger FocusWeek” during August, witheach of them aiming to raiseR4 000 for the hungry.

An initiative of Stop HungerNow – an international organisa-tion which provideshunger re-lief to those in poor areas– the fo-cus week will see well-resource-dhigh schools help raise fundsfor the less fortunate.

Stop Hunger Now started outin the United States in 1998, andhas helped to feed millions ofhungry people across the world.

In July last year, a Stop Hun-ger Now office opened in CapeTown. The Constantia-based or-ganisation has a meal packagingprogramme – consisting of rice, soy, a soup mix and a flavouringmix, including 21 essential vita-mins and minerals into small

meal packets. Each meal costs R2and the food stores easily, has ashelf-life of five years and trans-ports quickly.

South Peninsula High Schoolin Diep River kickstarted theirfundraising with a “No GrubDay” on Tuesday 19 April.

In addition to donating R5each, which will go towards mealpackages, pupils fasted from08:00 to 12:00 as a show of unitywith the poor and starving.

Other schools that will partici-pate in the “Stop Hunger FocusWeek” are Bergvliet, Plumstead,Norman Henshilwood andZwaanswyk high schools, as wellas Immaculata Girls’ HighSchool.

People’s Post visited South Pe-ninsulaHighSchool and spoke topupils while they were packag-ing food parcels.

Lauren van der Byl (15) saysthe day symbolises feeling empa-thy towards the less fortunatewho go hungry on a daily basis.

“It gave us a chance to experi-ence hunger,” she said.

Another pupil, SameerahBrey, says: “These four hoursthat we’ve gone without food will

help bring us closer as a commu-nity in fighting hunger. We cando this on our own too, but todayis when we all come together, and feel hungry as one,” she said.

Second chance for failed matricsMELISSA PAPIER

THE Metro South Education Dis-trict (MSED) of the Western CapeEducation Department (WCED)has announced its plans to assistGrade 12 pupils who failed lastyear.

The MSED said last Wednes-day that the department will berolling out a programme to en-courage unsuccessful 2010 ma-triculants to successfully com-plete their matric this year asfull-time candidates.

Glen van Harte, the MSED cur-riculum manager, says the dis-trict’s matric pass rate last yearwas 76%.

“This means that 1 600 pupilsfailed to receive their matric cer-

tificate. What we found was thatmany of these pupils failed by 1%to 3% and we can’t afford to letthese pupils slip through the sys-tem.

“It is our view in the districtthat we must allow these pupilsa second chance at obtaining thisprecious certificate,” he said.

This opportunity is only forpupils within the Metro SouthDistrict, which includes Mitch-ell’s Plain, Lower Crossroads,Philippi, Nyanga, Brown’sFarm, Retreat, Lotus River,Grassy Park, Wynberg, Laven-der Hill, Fish Hoek, Ocean View,Masiphumelele, Kommetjie,Noordhoek, Sun Valley andWynberg. Former pupils want-ing to participate in this pro-

gramme must:. Commit themselves to a full-

time study programme for 2011.. Commit to attending tutori-

al sessions during the holidaysand on selected Saturdays and af-ter school.

. Attend all lessons regularlywithout absence.

. Work closely with Dr JohnGibbon, who is the district’s pro-gramme manager.

“The district will support allpupils in achieving this goal. Wewill purchase the necessary sta-tionery and textbooks for pupilsin addition to supplying pupilswith good teachers and tutors.

“Because some learners arewaiting for the supplementaryexamination results – which will

be available on 3 and 4 May – wewill be meeting with all interest-ed learners at a later stage,” hesaid.

The meeting will place on Sun-day 8 May and Monday 9 May atthe Lentegeur Hospital Auditori-um and the Ottery Hall, situatedat the Ottery Youth Care Centre,at 10:00.

“While the year for matricu-lants is nearing the half-waymark, we are confident that withthe right attitude and our sup-port pupilswill not onlypass, butwill do well enough to continuestudying further. It is never toolate to start a good practice.”

Illegal dumping blitz plannedMELISSA LE ROUX

THE City of Cape Town is planning a seriesof blitzes to catch illegal dumpers in the

act.

Those caught will face “heavy fines”. Thosefound dumping cigarette butts will face a possiblefine of R500 and businesses would be fined a mini-mum of a R1 000 for illegal dumping of waste.

The Solid Waste By-law Enforcement Team willlaunch special operations in dumping “hot spots”to combat the spiralling problem of illegal dump-ing in the City.

During the blitz operations, a group of officerswill arrive, without warning, at designated areas.

The team has identified 1 500 “hot spots” acrossthe entire metropolitan area.

Heavy fines will be issued to those caughtdumping illegally or committing any other waste-related offences such as littering of cigarettebutts, chips packets and cooldrink cans.

“The team’s job is to check all the “hot spots”and trace all illegal dumping sites – where peoplecontinuously dispose of their waste,” says WardCouncillor Jan Burger.

Officials will inspect, monitor and catch the cul-prits who continue to use City-owned areas as ille-gal dumping sites.

Claire Mckinnon, manager of the City’s AreaCleaning

Solid Waste Management Department, says thedays on which the special operations are to beheld will be kept secret.

“This is to ensure that residents of the variousareas won’t know that we’re coming. The dump-ing would continue as usual and we can catch thedumpers,” she said.

Illegal dumping is one of the City’s biggest prob-lems, costing hundreds of millions of rands a year

to clean up.The problem of illegal dumping happens all

over the City and is prevalent in areas such asAthlone where, in one instance, a field is coveredin unsightly and unsanitary waste, including bro-ken couches, mats, clothes, wood, bottles, tyresand papers (“No end to dumping”, People’s Post,22 February).

People’s Post has reported frequently on illegaldumping, highlighting among others:

. A spate of illegal dumping incidents occurredat Wolfgat Nature Reserve in Mitchell’s Plain, where a group of people was found living in thebushes in March. The busheswere filthy, with dirtand rubble everywhere (“Residents ‘take back’Wolfgat Reserve”, 15 March).

. The area along the railway line in Mocke Road,Punts Estate in Retreat, is used by vagrants todump waste and sort out their scrapyard mess. There is also a constant problem in Retreat withfishmongers who continue to dump their waste invleis, causing an unsanitary mess for those whouse the vleis (“Fishmongers continue to dumptheir waste in vleis”, 5 April).

. Illegal dumping of tyres is on the increase inGrassy Park – from Beak Road in Pelican Heights, towards Fifth Avenue, where damaged tyres aredotted across a vacant piece of land; (“Communityfed-up with tyre dumping”, 22 February); and

. In Voortrekker Road in Maitland, a largenumber of tyres are on the side of the road in frontof a derelict building (“Dumped tyres infuriatedrivers,” 19 April).

While the City tries to prevent illegal dumpingby providing facilities for the disposal of waste –such as garden waste, recyclables, residentialwaste and builders’ rubble – the dumping of wasteon public or private properties still occurs.

The City’s plan to prevent dumping includesnew litter bin.

‘Has the DA shot itself in the foot?’IT WAS with great shockand deep disappointmentthat I read in one of ourcommunity newspapers(“New candidates to standfor election”, People’s Post,Tuesday 29 March) thatmore than half of the South-ern Suburbs’ 34 ward coun-cillors will not be standingfor re-election as wardcouncillors in local govern-ment elections, after theirnames were left off the list

of ward councillor candi-dates submitted by theDemocratic Alliance (DA)for the Independent Elec-toral Commission (IEC).

It is to be understood if award councillor opts for re-tirement. However, somerespected and hard-work-ing ward councillors havesimply been ditched with-out receiving reasons, nor aword of appreciation forservices rendered.

One very loyal wardcouncillor, Basil Lee ofWard 67, does not deservesuch flagrant disregard. Many constituents have ex-pressed their dismay.

One wonders what effectthis will have on electionday. Has the DA shot itselfin the foot? As a keen DAsupporter, I am extremelydisappointed.SOLWYN WESSELSRondevlei Subcouncil

Appeal for school shoesMY NAME is RoekshanahAdams. I am an ex-learnerof Buck Road PrimarySchool.

Currently, I am assistingas a volunteer teacher atthe school. I started volun-teering from January, andI have seen that most of thefamilies are poverty-strick-en, and parents are unableto buy their children the re-quired uniform.

What bothered me wasthat it was the beginning ofthe year, and majority ofthe children came to school

with burst-open schoolshoes.

What inspired me is thatthese children are eager tocome to school despite thefact that their toes are out-side of their shoes.

My concern is that win-ter is approaching, and Ican’t imaginewhat itwouldfeel like for these kids tocome to school with brokenshoes, which will result inmany sick learners.

At Buck Road Primary,we strive for excellence andtry our best to help as many

learners, but in the endthere is only so much wecan do.

I am sending out a pleafor assistance; help provideschool shoes for the mostneedy learners. Please lookdeep into your kind heartsand grant us a little favour.

School is a place of learn-ing, where educators pro-vide hope for the future; Ihave seen it.

Feel free to contact me on078 396 7083.ROEKSHANAH ADAMSGrassy Park

ApologyLAST week’s Treknet car-toon gave the impressionthat a person named “Ga-mat” was under the influ-

ence of alcohol. While itwas not the intention ofthe cartoonists, People’sPost apologises for offencethat may have been causedto Muslim readers.

Historic holidayTOMORROW (Wednesday) South Africanswill celebrate Freedom Day, a historic day fora country and people once divided along ra-cial lines.

Seventeen years ago, people of colour werenot allowed to vote and were subjected to op-pressive minority rule. They were forced tolive, fight and die in inferior areas and evict-ed from their homes. Barren District 6 is a tes-timony to the atrocities that characterisedApartheid.

Not all welcomed the changes that usheredin a new order while some elected to forgetthe pain of the past, focusing instead on thejoy and hope of the present.

Part of the present is the younger genera-tion, and it is both good and sad that theymissed out on the unrest of the ’70s and ’80s.Good, because many youth like them losttheir lives in the liberation struggle, and sadbecause today’s youth seem to lack a true ap-preciation for the privileges that come so ea-sily to them. They take for granted the privi-lege of having the political freedom to livewhere they wish, the privilege of attendingschools with world-class sports and academicfacilities and the privilege of having equal ac-cess to jobs. Sadly, most do not know enoughof our country’s troubled political past to tru-ly value what they have.

Of greater concern though, and an irony, isthat while we have the freedom our constitu-tion and a democratic government afford us,we are not really free. How can we be whenpoverty, unemployment, crime and violenceon women and children headline our exis-tence?

This should be the burning question as wereflect on our freedom tomorrow, as we standunited in celebration of all that we’veachieved; of what we’ve shown the world, andourselves. And so we should celebrate Free-dom Day by also honouring the unsung he-roes – the community workers and the police– who fight daily to ease poverty, joblessnessand crime.

EARLIER this month, Julius Malema,ANC Youth League president, accusedDA leader Helen Zille of “dancing like amonkey” to get votes from the electorate.

Keeping such a keen eye on her moves,

Malema must have sat up and taken notewhen he heard that a field mouse hadscampered up Zille’s leg under her jeanswhen she visited his home town, Seshegoin Polokwane, on Thursday.

For Malema, the puzzle about HelenZille’s dancing might be solved and hemay now have one less wonder to ponderabout her before laying his head to restat night.

Dallas 2010: How itwent downIN response to your article, “Dallas

tour debacle” (People’s Post, 19 April):Last year, during the same period,

my family and I were part of the Dallas2010 tour, my spouse being one of the twocoaches of the team and my son playingin the team. Our team was treated firstclass in Dallas as we were the upcominghosts of the World Cup.

I just want to mention a few issues thataffected our trip.

1. Team preparation: Mr Basil Palan-yandi did not arrange practices andgames and fields. Everything was lastminute, which was frustrating to the coa-ches. The boys were also never all thereas they were involved in other things.

2. Team funds: Most of our funds weredeposited into one or other account of theorganiser. Mr Palanyandi asked me to-wards the end of the year to collect out-standing monies from the parents. WhenI collected the money I would hand it overto him immediately. This was the trendup until the last meeting Mr Palanyandiheld with the boys and their parents ata local campsite.

3. Team gear: There was absolutely nosponsorship, even though we went underthe auspices of the Archbishop DesmondTutu’s foundation. As parents we had tofork out money for everything. The boysreceived their gearon the lastminute andthe gear was not up to scratch. Jacketsand bags were promised as part of thegear – this we paid for, but to date theseboys and the rest of the touring partyhave not received any bags nor jackets.

4. Team departure: We had a farewellat a local hotel. There was not enough

food, and families of two boys from Stel-lenbosch pitched (Mr Palanyandi told usthey were not in the team any longer al-though their flights had been for paid al-ready). This occasion was disastrous.

The departure date changed to twodays later. Mr Palanyandi and the headcoach did not make it to Dallas. The headcoach arrived in time for the last gameas Mr Palanyandi did not book his ticket.

5. Team arrival and team transport inDallas: Mr Palanyandi never booked andpaid for any team transport in Dallas. This we found out on the eve of our depar-ture. After telephoning Dallas to confirmthe booking, we were told there was notransport for us, so the coach and I hadto run around frantically finding fundsfor transport. A player’s parents helpedus out. After being at the orientationcamp for three days we had to find some-one to take us back to Dallas to collect thevan and then to the hotel. This van wasnot big enough for all and put more pres-sure on the manager and coach. Thecoach had to take responsibility for driv-ing the van without an internationaldriving licence because the managerwould not do it. To crown it all this wasnot the first trick. We only found out af-terwards. Between my family and themanager we had to use our own funds forgas for most of the time as there was nomoney from Mr Palanyandi as promised.

6. We arrived in Cape Town all well af-ter the tournament and we had a good ex-perience, but to date we have not had afeedback meeting with Mr Palanyandi.JULIA FALKENSybrand Park

Sharks crave Newlands showdownLOUIS DE VILLIERS

THE Stormers will have to stop a fewsturdy players in their tracks at New-

lands on Saturday if they want to stay atthe top of the Super Rugby series.

Not only do the Sharks sound cautiouslyoptimistic that Bismarck du Plessis will be fitand ready to play against the Capetonians, but the storming flank, Jean Deysel, could al-so return to the team.

In addition, John Smit delivered a tidy per-formance against the Hurricanes as theSharks’ hooker.

Du Plessis is a football freak that wouldmake most teams, and the Sharks do not con-stitute most teams.

Tendai (The Beast) Mtawarira and WillemAlberts also looked sharp against the Hurri-canes on Saturday, which will make for a lip-

smacking spectacle at Newlands for thosewho appreciate rough and ready rugby.

John Plumtree, the Sharks’ coach, justsmiled at the question of wheth-er he would consider Deysel, saying: “If he is fit.”

Deysel has played the pastthree Vodacom Cup matches, sothis requirement is easily met.

The Sharks coach is preparingfor a difficult mission. “I do notsee much in it for us that theyhad a bye this weekend. It willnot help to hit at them for 40 min-utes – it is more difficult thanthat.

“There is more than enough atstake – both teams will know af-terwards exactly where they stand,” he saidafter the match against the Hurricanes.

According to him, his team will not be tak-

ing a leaf out of the Reds’ book. The Queenslanders are the only team that

could trump the Stormers this year and thisis largely the result of tacticalkicking.

“The Reds’ recipe will not workfor us. We will stick with whatsuits us. You can also not try toread too much into one match.”

An area of the Sharks’ play thatconcerns their coach is their line-out work. The Sharks lost a cou-ple of throw-ins – not a fatal error, but their line-out possession wassloppy on the whole and put themon the back foot.

“We tried out a few options, butit did not go well. Our line-out

work is currently not accurate enough, andif we don’t urgently iron it out, the Stormerswill put us under ugly pressure.”

The former Stormers lock, Ross Skeate, was in the middle of the line-out on Saturday, but was not an overwhelming success.

No-one knows better than the Capetonians, though, what the talented Skeate is capableof, and Plumtree was also satisfied with hisperformance.

He singled out the contributions of his re-placements: Jannie du Plessis and KeeganDaniel, who were on the replacements benchfor a change but performed superbly duringtheir time on the field.

“Jannie and Keegan did very well and Adi(Jacobs) was as dangerous as always when heran on from the bench. There is healthy com-petition in the team.”

With the Stormers doubting the availabili-ty of fly half Peter Grant, an extremely impor-tant cog in their defence, there is already theprospect this week of a few feisty Sharks spe-cifically targeting this channel.

Dallas tour row intensifiesBRIAN GAFFNEY

THE controversy surrounding theill-fated Dallas Cup tour for under-15s to America rages unabated fol-

lowing the disqualification of the 17-play-er squad from the annual event that start-ed on Sunday 17 April.

So much so that more angry parents of thetouring players have contacted People’s Post, which broke the news “Dallas Tour Debacle”in its Tuesday 19 April edition.

The parents and friends also placed the re-port on Facebook, which was then read by thetouring children in America.

The article revealed the anguish the youthfootballers experienced – through no fault oftheir own – after the team was disqualifiedfor failing to register on time and arrivinglate for the tournament.

Former Springbok rugby player Dale San-ton, whose son plays for Wynberg St John’sAFC, and Winston Faulmann, whose son isa member of the Western Province SportsSchool, were among parents who vowed toput the record straight once the team returnsfrom Dallas. Faulmann spent over R60 000 forhim and his wife to go on tour with their son, while Santon forked out over R20 000.

Amid the chaos, tour coordinator Basil Pal-anyandi – who has been involved in severalprevious Dallas tours – has been targeted bythe parents for not fulfilling “his duties cor-rectly and timeously”.

They blamed Palanyandifor the delay in the issuingof visas by the AmericanConsulate in Cape Town. This resulted in the tourgroup leaving on separateflights on Friday 15 and Sat-urday 16 April, instead ofon Sunday 10 April for Dal-las, as had been scheduled.

The controversy deep-ened when Dan Vaughan, the aide for ArchbishopDesmond Tutu, said lastMonday that the Archbishop had withdrawnhis support for the Dallas tours since 2009, af-

ter Palanyandi “failed tosubmit audited financialstatements, as well as forother conditions regard-ing misrepresentationthat were not adhered to”.

It has also come to lightthat no executive memberof the Safa CapeTown – which has dis-tanced itself from the tourthat was endorsed by theSouth African FootballAssociation (Safa) – hon-oured invitations to at-tend a farewell functionfor the tour group.

Palanyandi serves onthe executive (head of fix-tures) for the SafaCT – which has indicatedit will summon him to ameeting after his returnfrom Dallas.

In another twist to thedebacle, this newspaper established that Pal-anyandi liaised with some parents and otherstakeholders involved in the Dallas Cup toursvia the email address [email protected] from the offices of the LFA CapeDistrict, and not through the [email protected] email address, which serves asa control point for all emails regarding soc-cer.

It is understood that Palanyandi’s emailwas only supposed to beused to fulfil his duties assecretary of the FacilityManagement Committee(FMC) for the LFA CapeDistrict, which is based atthe William Herbert SportsComplex in Wynberg. Win-ston Engledoe, the presi-dent of the LFA Cape Dis-trict, also serves as chair-person of the FMC.

The LFA Cape Districtsaid last week that “it had

not received any complaint from any parentsover the last 10 years regarding the Dallas

Cup Tournament”.“Like any club (Ikapa), requested permis-

sion from Cape District, Safa and Safa CTto partake in the Dallas Cup tournament.

“We are, however, unaware of the finan-cial implications as no funds were directedvia Cape District for this tour. Cape Districtis not in a position to comment on the opera-tional issues for this tournament or anyother tournament hosted by any otherclub.”

But Carla Goodman, whose son plays forCamps Bay AFC, was among parents whoconfirmed they were contacted via theemail address basil@capedistrict in con-nection with pre-tour arrangements. Shesaid the parents will meet to decide whataction they will take regarding the tour de-bacle, prior to the tour group’s arrival atCape Town International Airport on Thurs-day 28 April.

Mohamed Shabodien, the reservationsmanager for an Athlone-based travel agen-cy, confirmed yesterday (Monday) that thetour group will return home via London.

When Palanyandi was contacted by this

newspaper on Wednesday 13 April to give hisside of the story, he responded: “Your call re-garding the Archbishop Desmond Tutu IkapaUnited team – no comment.

“You are however invited to attend the reportback meeting once the team returns. Will giveyou date, time and venue for that meeting.”

Arrangements were made for the touringteam to compete in friendly matches in Dallasafter its disqualification.

In this photo emailed to People’s Post from Dallas, Ikapa United tour coordinator Basil Palanyandi is seen lastweek with cheerleaders from the Dallas Cup tournament and some youth players from Cape Town at a postmatchcelebration. The team was, however, disqualified from participation in the Dallas Cup due to late registration, butarrangements were made by the tournament organisers for the South Africans to play in friendly matches.
