After witnessing the horrors of the Holocaust, U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower recognized the surest way to break cycles of fear and misunderstanding was for people to knew one another. He understood for this to be effective it must come not through governments but through the hearts of people yearning for dignity, freedom, and peace.

On September 11, 1956, President Eisenhower launched People to People International (PTPI), an NGO and not-for-profit 501(c)(3) with its world headquarters in Kansas City, MO, USA.

Fast forward to 2013 and Eisenhower’s belief that “peaceful relations between nations require understanding and mutual respect between

Our programs have touched hundreds of thousands in more than 160 countries. We are helping to develop citizen leaders who challenge themselves to grow, learn and connect with others.

The year 2013 brought significant change to People to People International. After a long and highly successful tenure, Mary Eisenhower stepped down as our President and CEO. Mary remains our partner in peace; we are grateful for her past and present service and, more importantly, for her abiding commitment to the mission of People to People International. We were pleased to welcome a new friend to our global family, in our new President and CEO, Clark Plexico. Clark brings 38 years of international experience with nonprofits, NGOs, businesses and governments and is a sought after speaker and trainer on managing and leading across cultures.

The year 2013 also brought significant change in the world around us. Conflict simmered in nearly every corner of the world. Natural disasters created humanitarian needs. National economies continued the struggle to recover from the global recession of 2008.

Change is nothing new to People to People International. After all, when President Eisenhower founded the organization in 1956, the greatest focus was on building friendships between Soviets and Americans. The Soviet Union is gone, but PTPI remains for a very good reason. Now, more than ever, the Eisenhower legacy of promoting intercultural understanding, international friendship, humanitarianism, and peace is incredibly relevant and timely. Indeed, one important thing did not change during 2013 – the relevance of People to People International in solving some of the world’s most pressing problems. That relevance is reflected in the organization’s significant accomplishments during the year. With 272 chapters worldwide, our members and supporters are an active force in creating and sustaining a more peaceful world.

At no other time in history have we had the capabilities to be so interconnected with populations around the world. In 2014 and beyond, People to People International will continue to connect people across borders and cultures. We recognize that how we create a more peaceful and connected world should, and will, shift to respond to new conditions. We will do just that because our global network of chapters, members, and partners know that peace is possible. We know that people have the power to create peace. With your help, we can do this – and we will.

Dr. Micah KubicChairmain, Board of Directors

In 2013, the nonprofit “Read With Me, Arusha!” provided 100 books to the 40 orphans at Samaritan Village and Karim Children’s Care Center in Arusha, Tanzania. The organization also sponsored the tuition, uniforms, books, and transportation fees for two students, and contributed to the building of a health clinic. The orphanage implemented a reading time each night before the children go to bed to help them practice their English and improve their reading skills. That’s a privilege for very few children in Arusha.

This is not where the story started. It started when Ann Pratt Teberg traveled to Tanzania with PTPI in 2008.

Ann Pratt Teberg is shown here with Schola, an orphan that now benefits from the books provided to Samaritan Village.

ANN’S STORYLEADInspiring people to become leaders

who are making a difference

The success of People to People International translates into success for people worldwide. These are a few examples of that mission in action.

Our Stories

That trip changed Ann; she left pieces of her heart in Tanzania and has been compelled to return time and again in her quest to transform her life and the lives of others.

As a result, Ann created the nonprofit “Read With Me, Arusha!” which in addition to books and tuition sponsorships also provides solar lights for families. Ann has also set a goal to help the St. Margaret’s School complete their dream of Internet access and computers for more than 700 students to help better prepare them for future jobs and further education. A solar power systems provider from Washington State, an Internet provider from Moshi, and St. Margaret’s are now collaborating to create a computer lab. They have designed the systems and the classroom, but additional funds will be required to train area workers to install and maintain the system.

As an associate professor at Whitworth University’s School of Education, Ann is teaching by example. Ten of her students joined her on a recent trip, volunteering at the orphanage and living with families. She will return to Tanzania in January 2015. More books will be distributed and “Read With Me, Arusha!” will continue to support as many children as possible with scholarships.

Ann, who has since become a member of PTPI’s Board of Trustees, shared that the impetus behind creating her nonprofit was an orphan she met on her first visit. “Schola is my true love. She’s the reason I started ‘Read With Me, Arusha!’ so I could keep returning to see her. I have seen her every year since the PTPI trip,” she said. “I feel so small when I see 100 books, and only two students’ school fees. But I know it’s the effort that counts and that those numbers are actually quite useful in Arusha.”

A PTPI scholarship enabled Aisha Hassan, president of the St. Louis, Missouri Chapter, to attend her first Global Youth Forum (GYF) in 2013 and it changed her life. These are her remarks:

AISHA’S STORYDeveloping a global

commitment to peace

Aisha Hassan (left) formed friendships with Karo-lina Ole’s of Poland and other students from around the world during the 2013 Global Youth Forum.

“This conference gave me the reassurance that my actions, regardless of how small, make a positive impact in the world. I strive to give back to my community. The GYF included a greatly diverse group of individuals with a shared belief in creating Peace through Understanding. We were all willing to dedicate our time for the well-being of others. As this mentality spreads throughout the world, we will someday achieve global peace.

As I reflected on the broad impact of the program, I noticed how this program had internally changed me. I now wish to focus on the advancement of society - economically, politically, socially, technologically, and especially academically. The GYF helped me find to find that passion. I encourage students around the world to participate in the Global Youth Forum.

I gained knowledge and experience, and I found my life’s purpose. You can, too.”

CONNECTEfforts in Lome, Togo are possible through Chapter President Newlove Bobson Atiso and members whose hard work and dedication yield positive results. Thanks to a generous grant made possible by the Hall Family Foundation, chapter members constructed new classrooms and consistently distribute educational materials to children in need. Through the Sister Chapter Program, Lome partners with members in PTPI’s Los Angeles, California, USA Chapter. In addition to this joint educational project, Chapter President John Paton recently visited Lome to bring this connection full circle. Newlove shared, “In life, the only thing we can be remembered of after we left will be the impact we have made in the life of others. Surely that is the only stamp of human life that shall remain forever.”

PTPI’s Lome, Togo Chapter is well known for its generous humanitarian outreach. Here, Sister Chapter Partners Newlove (right) and John Paton (left) donate rice and medicine to local orphans.

EXPERIENCEMembers of PTPI’s Trenton, New Jersey, USA Chapter, Michael and Mary Hermida saw firsthand the positive impact of cross-cultural learning when they attended the 2013 European Conference. Their belief in PTPI, and the experiences and relationships cultivated through that conference, convinced them of the need to ensure that young people be given the opportunity to expand their horizons. So the Hermidas made a generous investment in supporting students from the Bulgaria and Poland chapters, helping them to make a positive difference in the world.

The students have organized events that are enriching their lives and addressing specific community needs. Their efforts include visits and joint projects with a local retirement home; coordinating 80 participants to spend time with and provide necessities for local orphans; and teaching 17 students from different nationalities team-building and

cross-cultural skills through “Ambassadors of Peace” workshops. The students’ attendance at the European conference helped to develop their personal leadership and diplomacy skills, and equipped them with the tools necessary for growing their chapter programs. And while the students’ international experiences first impact them at the personal level, those experiences are multiplied when the positive influence extends to their schools, communities, and beyond.

Michael, a PTPI Trustee, shared, “The dedication of PTPI students in countries like Poland, Bulgaria and Macedonia to their humanitarian efforts, despite the many challenges they face doing things that we as Americans take for granted, is inspirational. We are proud to support these efforts and to help facilitate student attendance and interaction at these PTPI conferences.”
