Pentecost Order of Worship

WE GATHER TO WORSHIP GOD …

Stewardship Thought: God’s power is received, not grasped. As such, we are called and summoned to steward that power faithfully in word and deed.

Lighting our Worship Candle Dr. Bailey

Prelude Debbie McGregor

Welcome and Gathering Words Dr. Bailey

Call to Worship Dr. Bailey

One: Today we celebrate the powerful enabling breath of God’s Spirit, shattering the shutters of our hearts. Many: On this day, perhaps clad in our pajamas, sitting at home perhaps with coffee in hand, may we continue to let the Spirit of new life breathe upon us! One: From near empty sanctuaries, through video worship, we gather with our sisters and brothers, proclaiming that we continue to experience God’s Pentecost. Many: On this day, we want God to help us bless all who remain sheltered in place, safe in God’s grace. One: Though no waving of red streamers together in the sanctuary, we will still continue to speak of God’s love and the Spirit’s peace for all. Many: So that though apart, we know we are not alone, so that when that day comes, and we know it will, we will find a community eager to welcome each other back. One: Let us worship God.

Gracious God, we will not gather, side by side, this Pentecost.

We are here— your sons and daughters— praising you in every place.

In our houses and apartments, in the rooms where people stay,

in the midst of this pandemic, God, we worship, sing and pray.

People from each land and nation, in each language that we use,

grieve the need for separation, yet, united, share Good News.

As we’re distant from each other in the midst of so much fear,

may your churches all remember: By your Spirit, you are here!

Long ago, the wind came blowing; flames of love and boldness spread.

Soon the church went out proclaiming: “Christ is risen from the dead”

Peter preached what Joel had promised: In the most uncertain times,

you give dreams and visions to us; you send great and wondrous signs!

By your Spirit, give us courage! May your Church unite to be

bearers of your Good News message to your world community.

Call to Reconciliation Rev. Limongi

Whether isolated and shuttered or not we know we are not always on our best behaviour. Though we might bristle at this, we know deep down that we do welcome God’s Spirit breathing new life into us. Why? Because at times we lock ourselves behind the doors of fear, and we are in need of new hope and rekindled faith. So let us confess and pray together, saying,

Confessing Together

O blowing Spirit of God, we wish we could say that we always welcome your intrusion into our lives. We wish we could always speak with delight of the ways you, Wind of Power, disrupt our well laid plans. The truth is, we can’t seem to help ourselves. Instead drawing on your strength and leading, too many of us try to ‘go it’ on our own strength, with faulty wisdom. We get worn out and disillusioned. We confess our disappointment in

Page 6: Pentecost Sunday “God’s Spirit Power to Love, Witness and ...Jennifer Payne, Jaylyn Wong. Music “The Open Heart” by Cynthia Douglass Read by Dan Lanoue Lord, send me the gift

light of plans dashed and events cancelled. We confess that this time of Covid-19 has exposed things within us, as well as deep wrongs and fissures in our society. We confess that we have not been as attentive to the suffering of others as we should have been. Forgive us and transform us. Use us by your Spirit to pour love, gospel, and justice into our communities and city. Make us channels of your blessing to all those who are lonely, and afraid, and worried about tomorrow. Be pleased to increase our faith and our obedience, we pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Silence Words of Forgiveness Rev. Limongi Choral Response: Halle, halle, halle (sing twice)

Hymn: On Pentecost They Gathered (Ellacombe) VU#195

On Pentecost they gathered quite early in the day,

a band of Christ's disciples, to worship, sing, and pray. A mighty wind came blowing, filled all the swirling air, and tongues of fire aglowing

inspired each person there.

The people all around them were startled and amazed to understand their language,

as Jesus Christ they praised. What universal message,

what great good news was here? That Christ, once dead, is risen

to vanquish all our fear.

God pours the Holy Spirit on all who would believe, on women, men, and children

Page 7: Pentecost Sunday “God’s Spirit Power to Love, Witness and ...Jennifer Payne, Jaylyn Wong. Music “The Open Heart” by Cynthia Douglass Read by Dan Lanoue Lord, send me the gift

who would God's grace receive. That Spirit knows no limit,

bestowing life and power. The church, formed and reforming,

responds in every hour.

O Spirit, sent from heaven on that day long ago, rekindle faith among us

in all life's ebb and flow. O give us ears to listen

and tongues aflame with praise, so folk of every nation

glad songs of joy shall raise. Words: © 1980 Jane Parker Huber. From A Singing Faith. Used by permission of Westminster John Knox Press. Music: Neuvermehrtes Meiningisches Gesangbuch. Adapted by Felix Mendelssohn. Words: Westminster John Knox Press. Music: Public Domain. One License A733294

WE LISTEN FOR THE WORD OF GOD

First Scripture Lesson: Acts 2:1-21

Michelle Bailey, Jason Corbin, Joanna Hamley, Graeme Kemkes, Alison Spiers (Ignite Group)

Responsive Reading: Psalm 104:24-34, 35b Rev. Limongi

One: O Lord, how manifold are your works! In wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.

Many: Yonder is the sea, great and wide, creeping things innumerable are there, living things both small and great.

One: There go the ships, and Leviathan that you formed to sport in it.

Many: These all look to you to give them their food in due season;

One: when you give to them, they gather it up; when you open your hand, they are filled with good things.

Many: When you hide your face, they are dismayed; when you take away their breath, they die and return to their dust.

One: When you send forth your spirit, they are created; and you renew the face of the ground.

Page 8: Pentecost Sunday “God’s Spirit Power to Love, Witness and ...Jennifer Payne, Jaylyn Wong. Music “The Open Heart” by Cynthia Douglass Read by Dan Lanoue Lord, send me the gift

Many: May the glory of the Lord endure forever; may the Lord rejoice in his works—

One: who looks on the earth and it trembles, who touches the mountains and they smoke.

Many: I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have being.

One: May my meditation be pleasing to him, for I rejoice in the Lord.

Many: Bless the Lord, O my soul. Praise the Lord!

Our Father, who art in Heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and let us not fall into temptation, but deliver us from evil; for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen

AND WE GO FORTH IN THE POWER OF GOD’S SPIRIT

Hymn: I Feel the Winds of God VU#625

I feel the winds of God today; today my sail I lift,

though heavy oft with drenching spray and torn with many a rift;

if hope but light the water’s crest, and Christ my bark will use,

I’ll seek the seas at his behest, and brave another cruise.

It is the wind of God that dries my vain regretful tears,

until with braver thoughts shall rise the purer, brighter years;

if cast on shores of selfish ease or pleasure I should be,

O let me feel your freshening breeze, and I’ll put back to sea.

If ever I forget your love and how that love was shown,

lift high the blood-red flag above; it bears your name alone.

Great pilot of my onward way, you will not let me drift;

I feel the winds of God today, today my sail I lift.

ANNOUNCEMENTS Confidential Phone Counselling – by Dr. Bailey. Contact information: [email protected]; 613 728-8656 x 222 Continuing in Prayer and Support: In these times, as in all times, we are trusting God to grant us wisdom, mercy and faith. As a community of faith and followers of Jesus we are reminded of the numerous times the Bible counsels us not to ‘be afraid’. Normally, this exhortation is accompanied by God’s promise to be with us. God being with us inspires and empowers us to be ‘with’ each other. We do this by praying for one another and reaching out by phone, facetime, Facebook, email, WhatsApp…you name it. Let’s just stay connected. We send love and wish everyone comfort and good health, and look forward to hearing from you. May God bless us all. Children, youth, young adults and IGNITE

These can be accessed on the church web site www.parkdaleunitedchurch.ca. We are sending out a worship bulletin by email that you may use at home on Sunday mornings. Offering As we continue with our ministries, and indeed as requests for help are increasing, we depend on donations from our congregation. 1. A donation through Canada Helps, indicating that the donation

is to go to Parkdale United Church - Ottawa

revenue to support the church Ministries. PAR forms and information can be printed from the church website (parkdaleunitedchurch.ca)

PRAYER REQUESTS INBOX Please feel free to send your

prayer requests to [email protected].

LET US BE JOYFUL IN HOPE, PATIENT IN

AFFLICTION, FAITHFUL IN PRAYER Here are some

prayer suggestions for this Week:

“… the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as

we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for

words.” (Romans 8: 6)

- For all infected with COVID19, for their families and for those

most vulnerable and exposed to the virus.

- Let our prayers be with and for those who are grieving their

loved ones within the limitations of the lockdown. We join in prayer

with the residents of Minneapolis and all parts of the world raising

their voices for racial killing to stop. We pray for those who mourn

George Floyd.

- For those in long-term care homes (residents and their families,

staff).

- For our congregation, and specially for our elder saints; and for

those who have parents, grandparents, friends or relatives in senior

residences and nursing homes.

- For frontline workers and volunteers in the medical field and

their families: for the daily emotional and physical strain on them, for

health and safety; for faith and strength. Let us keep in our hearts and

prayers those from our congregation who are serving in this area

(Allison and her children, Carolyn, Paul, Christine, Ellen, Bill and

Kathleen). We thank you!!!

Page 13: Pentecost Sunday “God’s Spirit Power to Love, Witness and ...Jennifer Payne, Jaylyn Wong. Music “The Open Heart” by Cynthia Douglass Read by Dan Lanoue Lord, send me the gift

- For frontline workers doing essential work in service areas and

volunteers helping others to go through this difficult time. We also

pray for their families. We thank you!!!

- For suffering from other conditions and illnesses; for those

suffering from with cancer and other autoimmune diseases.

- Times of fear, anxiety, depression, and uncertainty for many, let

us pray for all who are experiencing those.

- For all those in the most vulnerable situation in societies: no

housing, even more limited resources, no access to services, no

spaces for community, mental conditions. For those, children and

adults, living under conditions of domestic abuse. Let us continue to

remember our IFTC community at this time.

- We pray for wisdom to governments of the world to make wise

decisions on behalf of their people and the global community.

- For small business owners also facing drastic decisions; for the

unemployed and the big economic uncertainties lying ahead.

- We give thanks for Parkdale United children and youth, for all

those involved in this ministry with them. We pray for them and their

families, for their teachers and friends.

Lord hear our prayer, and in your love answer us.

COVID-19: MESSAGES FROM OTTAWA PUBLIC HEALTH: HOW CAN YOU PROTECT YOURSELF AND

YOUR FAMILY?

To reduce the spread of germs including the flu and the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) we recommend that you:

Wash your hands often with soap and water, or use hand sanitizer

Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth unless you have just washed your hands with soap

Cover your cough and sneeze with a tissue or into your arm, not your hand

If you are a return traveler (including travel to the United States of America) OR have MILD symptoms – you MUST self-isolate. Most people with MILD symptoms will recover at home with no issues. You are helping limit the spread of the virus by staying at home.

Social distancing refers to creating physical distance between ourselves so that we can limit the spread of the virus. Social distancing by all is IMPERATIVE to limit transmission in the community, to protect vulnerable populations and outbreaks in

Page 17: Pentecost Sunday “God’s Spirit Power to Love, Witness and ...Jennifer Payne, Jaylyn Wong. Music “The Open Heart” by Cynthia Douglass Read by Dan Lanoue Lord, send me the gift

institutions. We must ‘flatten the curve’ so we don’t see spikes in cases. By this, I mean that we want to slow down transmission of the virus and lessen the number of cases in the community that happen at the same time, so that our health system continues to work properly. Having a sharp increase of cases in a small timeframe will overload our healthcare resources and have more severe impacts on our community. Social distancing is important for everyone at this time, but especially important for our older adult community (55+). Do NOT gather in groups. Practice social distancing.

Social distancing does not mean emotional distancing. Check in with others by phone or other technology. Check in with yourself. It’s ok not to be ok. Please know that help is available, and we encourage you to reach out to Distress Centre of Ottawa to connect with someone at 613-238-3311 if needed.

Case Management and Privacy

We have received many questions from people who feel they are at risk, including many people expressing concern about being in the same location as someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 or who may have symptoms of COVID-19.

I would like to clarify a few points:

Given the transmission of COVID-19, we are all at risk. Social distancing, proper hand hygiene, not touching your face and self-isolation (when directed) are the best ways to reduce your personal risk at this time.

A close contact of a case of COVID-19, is someone who has lived with, provided care for, or spent longer periods of time with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19. Case and contact management is a role of public health to help identify who may have been in close contact with a confirmed case. Ottawa Public Health will contact you directly if you have been identified as a close contact.

OPH works closely with each confirmed case of COVID-19 to create a list of close contacts that require follow-up. If you have been contacted by Ottawa Public Health, follow the advice provided to you by the nurse.

Page 18: Pentecost Sunday “God’s Spirit Power to Love, Witness and ...Jennifer Payne, Jaylyn Wong. Music “The Open Heart” by Cynthia Douglass Read by Dan Lanoue Lord, send me the gift

Fraud concerns

I have been made aware that certain residents have received a phone call asking for credit card information from Ottawa Public Health (OPH). OPH (or any health unit) will not ask you for credit card information. Do not give your credit card information out if you receive a call or message similar to this. Fraudulent activity during a situation like this is deplorable. I encourage you to report it to Ottawa Police Services.

Gratitude

Thank you to all residents of the City of Ottawa for your ongoing patience and cooperation. We are all in this together, and we need everyone to do their part- whether providing an essential service or staying inside – to be able to slow the transmission of the COVID-19 virus in our community and protect our health system and loved ones who depend on it.

Dr. Vera Etches, Medical Officer of Health, Ottawa Public Health
