Pentaho in THE BI SURVEY 12 Pentaho overview Pentaho is one of the big commercial open source BI vendors that are gaining increasing traction in the market. Pentaho offers a BI suite with a broad portfolio of products from data integration and reporting to data mining. It also includes Mondrian - one of the first and best known OLAP analysis open source initiatives. Significantly, 76% of Pentaho users in this year’s survey indicated that they use Pentaho for OLAP analysis.
Pentaho customer responses This year Pentaho features in The BI Survey with 37 respondents reporting their experiences with the tool. More than two-thirds of respondents said they were using Pentaho version 4 with the rest indicating they were using version 3.

Peer groups are used to ensure similar products are compared against each other both in fairness to the vendor and for the benefit of the customer. The groups are essential to allow fair and useful comparisons of products that are likely to compete. The peer groups are primarily data-driven and based on how customers say they use the product. KPI Results for Pentaho in Peer Group “OLAP analysis vendor”
Top ranking OLAP analysis vendor in lowest cost per seat
The two top ranked vendors in the ‘cost per seat’ KPI use different methods to achieve low cost. SAP bundles its BI offering with other business applications, so the BI solution often appears to be free of charge or available at a low additional cost. The considerable implementation cost of SAP is distributed across lots of users, reducing the actual cost per seat. Pentaho users, on the other hand, typically build many of the solutions themselves, thus reducing the external implementation spend while maintaining the ability to combine open source licenses with subscriber licenses. This results in applications that show comparatively low cost per seat.

Top ranked OLAP analysis vendor in proportion of employees index
OLAP analysis products tend to be used by a small proportion of employees – often known as ‘Power Users’. However, Pentaho tops the list in this peer group. This is probably a result of the broad toolset and possibilities that its portfolio offers. In particular, reporting and dashboarding tools are normally used by a higher proportion of users within companies.
Leading OLAP analysis vendor in big data
Pentaho is a top three vendor in the ‘big data’ KPI, an aggregate of the ‘data volume’ and ‘variety of data types’ KPIs. Its native support for popular big data sources, including Hadoop, NoSQL databases and analytic databases contributes to this strong showing.

Leading OLAP analysis vendor in competitiveness
The ‘competitiveness’ KPI measures how well products perform against each other in head-on competitions to win customers. Pentaho achieves an excellent result here, beating many strong competitors including Microsoft, SAP, MicroStrategy and IBM.
Top ranked OLAP analysis vendor in user recommendation
This is an excellent result for Pentaho, ranking top in this important KPI ahead of many well-known and respected vendors. Pentaho users are most likely to recommend the product to other users.

Top ranked OLAP analysis vendor in cloud BI
Pentaho was one of the first BI vendors to offer cloud deployments of its solutions. In the ‘cloud BI’ KPI, Pentaho easily outstrips the competition ranking top in this category. The popularity of Pentaho with developers might also be helpful in these environments.
Leading OLAP analysis vendor in innovation
Pentaho ranks in the top five vendors for innovation, showing that customers value initiatives like the introduction of advanced visualization, advanced analysis and new connectors for big data style data sources.

Leading SME Project vendor in cost
Pentaho scores well in the ‘cost’ KPI. This measure is based on the ‘cost per seat’ and ‘seats per administrator’ KPIs. The combination of open source licenses and Pentaho’s subscription model brings down the cost per seat.

Summary
Pentaho achieves excellent results in several categories this year, topping the list in the ‘lowest cost per seat’ and overall ‘costs’ KPIs. These results reflect the success of its distribution model that allows for a combination of open source licenses and the subscription-based license model. Pentaho also scored highly in the ‘recommendation’ KPI, showing that customers are happy with the solution and vendor, and are ultimately willing to recommend it to other users.
